What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 177 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (913 of 1,232 positive).
Players find the game immersive and rewarding for naval warfare fans, but note it has a steep learning curve. [1][2][3] Some reviewers praise the detailed simulation and tense gameplay, while others criticize the lack of updates and polish. [4][5][6] Many recommend buying on sale due to limited content and unfinished state. [7][8][9]

This game is just a pain in the ass. To put in perspective, only 4.6% of players have sunken 10 uboats or more. Only 9.8% of players have completed the first campaign mission. The gameplay is pretty downright awful. The hits on enemy uboats feel VERY random even when using all the supplied radar, sonar, TRR, DRT, CSC PROJECTOR, and any and all readouts given by the crew. I have literally watched my depth charges …

****UPDATE**** The developers JUST became active again after a year of no contact at all. At this time I am going to keep my negative review up until I see more from the developers. They have released 2 new patches and are again active on the forums however. **** Destroyer: The U-Boat Hunter had all the right ingredients to be a standout naval warfare game. This isn't a pick-up-and-play game... there's definitely a learning curve. It is, however, a rather rewarding anti-sub sim set in WWII, and if you enjoyed the movie Greyhound, you'll almost certainly enjoy this game.

I like operating all the various sensors to track the u-boat. I'm a fan of submarine simulators and this is good to see the battle from the other side. The game is well done, runs smoothly and I haven't yet encountered any bug. The AI uboat are very aggressive (more than I am when I am in their place), maybe too much, although the game might be boring if their were more tame. Not sure how many hours it will be fun …

TLDR Destroyer: The U-Boat Hunter delivers an immersive naval warfare experience and blends tactical depth with atmospheric tension. Procedurally generated missions and battles grant a good level of replayability. For those interested in WWII era naval warfare, this is a gem and a milestone in destroyer class anti-submarine battles. Gameplay The game puts you into the shoes of the commander on a WWII Fletcher-class …

neutral · AI labelView post →Wanted to sink Nazi U-Boats, so I did a skirmish with Destroyer: The U-Boat Hunter and I'm reminded of how tight and effective a little game it is. Definitely a 'buy when on sale' sort of title given the amount of content, but what's there is quite good.

neutral · AI labelView post →Finally made time to do a run of Destroyer: The U-Boat Hunter. Just the simplest, shortest convoy battle to start out with and oh my goodness the game is a blast. Relentlessly intense and it demands pretty complex thinking even when everything is going right (I got fairly lucky).
positive · AI labelView post →Also, as an aside, if the gamers want a game that captures the Battle of the Atlantic in a similar way, Steam has Destroyer: The U-Boat Hunter (2023), which is good, though a bit thin, content wise - get it on sale (I've seen it below $10)

We could all be using USB-C with mega throughput and calling it firewire but no some ass decided the first stage boss should be named Xadeon The Destroyer and then 10 stages later theres Joseph the Boss.

neutral · AI labelView post →Even though the game is definitely not for me, I have to commend the devs for such an intricate design to the Destroyer Boat sim feeling. The learning curve is very steep and even the tutorial is alot to take in. The tutorial throws alot of text at you and moves pretty quickly without giving the player much to practice with. Utilization of all crew member functions helps you track and destroy Uboats. It's oddly satisfying, and even watching a YT video of someone who knows what they are doing,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's decent but developers are working on a different project at the moment and there are things to be tweaked and fixed. I don't expect any update soon and recommend you to buy a cd key through g2a or somewhere like that. I got it for a buck, don't bother buying it on steam. Edit: They released a fix less than a week after my review. It is mostly graphical issues and a reminder that they are not abandoning the game. Well that's good news but like I said, there are things that need to be…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After 28 hours in the game I decided to give it a negative review. I'm sorry, but no matter how much I like naval battle games, this game is horribly frustrating. 1. The tutorial is miserable, very brief and doesn't allow you to experiment or test anything. 2. The destroyer (only one model) is stiff and difficult to handle. 3. The NPCs behave stupidly (submarines are extremely agile, fast and resistant and never miss their targets, allies are usually useless). 4. The game is simplistic (the…

The premise of commanding a destroyer in the brutal U-Boat hunting campaigns of WWII is incredibly appealing, and the atmosphere is ripe for tension-filled naval engagements. Sadly, the game feels like a shadow of what it could have been, abandoned by its developers far too soon. While the core concept of the game is great, the execution leaves much to be desired. The gameplay, at first, seems…

neutral · AI labelView post →I think everyone agrees that this is a specialized game that does not fit mainstream game play mechanics and presentation. However, I like the innovative approach and had a lot of fun and intense moments in this game. I give a positive review. However, there are a few things I would strongly consider to optimise: 1) The game has two modes of tracking the enemies' position on the DRT (a map that you use to track the U-boat's position and your own ship's position): automatic or manual. Manual…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've never commanded a Fletcher-class destroyer during the Battle of the Atlantic, but I would say this game is 80% realistic. The main unrealistic things are that your sonar doesn't get deafened after firing depth charges, you have unlimited depth charges, no minimum sonar range. The gameplay is tedious and requires a lot of patience, as you're going to be circling around chasing a single U-boat for at least 30 minutes. In single missions, you can customize the heading of your convoy, number…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a "fair" game, and I don't like to hold a game accountable to faulty expectations, BUT, I know few players who aren't disappointed by the fact, that though this game easily props itself up as a the surface-hunter counterpart to all those fun open-world dynamic-mission submarine games, unfortunately, this is not it. 1 ship, 1 linear set of missions, and then its pretty much all over. If they had setup a dynamic patrol generator within a kind of sandbox game, with career promotion better…

neutral · AI labelView post →Bought it back when it was still in development (at the recommendation of the developers for UBOAT), and it was rough then but was interested in what it could become. Unfortunately the game is unfinished. Game play is rough, intuitive, and dull. The uboats seem to comeback from dead, even after getting a direct hit and an oil slick. The ship feels less like you're in command of a crew (like in UBOAT), and more like you are the only person on a ghost ship. I don't know how this game has "mostly…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is decent, but the lack of any development since 2024 makes this a DO NOT BUY.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As someone who fell in love with UBOAT, I really wanted to like this game, but it's just not there yet in terms of graphics quality and gameplay experience. I loved the challenge of hunting for subs and using the other destroyers to support the hunt. But the gameplay experience feels so clunky compared to UBOAT, and the lack of being able to move around the ship freely is a bummer. I loved using the different command stations though. It's a really cool concept and some aspects of it feel very…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →How about you finish this game and actually put more work into it instead of creating "Robin in Da hood" whatever that means, and "Sherman Commander" which, both, look like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ regardless, but it's still audacious you would abandon development on this child of potential for that.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game has seemingly been abandoned, their discord is silent, full of scams, updates are nill, I hope it bounces back and gets a major update, until then I cannot recommend it. It's fun, It's relatively realistic but without the devs its dead in the water. Update as of 2026, game is still abandonware 🚬 Edit: Game Dev said the game is finished, it truly doesn't feel finished, there are a lot of things I think could be polished, first thing that comes to mind is the fact that all the cannons are…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Early Access abandonware, don't let the lack of an early access tag fool you. the devs did that on purpose to hide how unfinished and neglected the game is. it'd be a true gem if they kept working on it. but they ditched it for Sherman Commander, an even clunkier release of theirs by the looks of things on youtube. I was waiting for bugfixes and hotfixes to uboat behavior before I touched the game again, but it looks like that is never coming.

neutral · AI labelView post →Tedious, oil slicks and debree do not indicate a successful kill. Sonar is very wonky often giving two totally different bearings for the same target. The AI is totally useless and the ship feels like you are captain of a ghost vessel with no souls on board. No machine gunners or roaming crew. Theres not even a model made for the depth charges to see them on board. To top it all off the game seems to be abandoned. Play the opposite side by getting U-BOAT an actually good game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Buggy, unfinished and abandoned. Avoid.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really tried to give this game a chance, and sunk (pun intended) almost 15 hours on it but the game is far from a finished product. If this was still an early access and the company was still all hands working hard towards finishing it, I would be less harsh, but releasing this game as is is borderline fraud. This game have so much to learn from Uboat. I wish we could manage the crew, call General Quarters have time to position the fleet and fast forward time as you wish. This would add…

neutral · AI labelView post →I'm having a pretty good time playing this game. The campaign is pretty fun. The voice acting and cutscenes are pretty bad to be honest, but the jank is more charming than jarring. Voice acting during gameplay is decent enough, with only the obvious pausing for the "insert number value here" part of the dialogue being really noticeable. Captain and crew voices are decent, XO's voice is clearly recorded with an inferior mic. Gameplay wise, I enjoy the mechanics. I play with the "auto-pilots"…

neutral · AI labelView post →This game is not realistic. Don't buy it if you expect something like UBOAT/SH or especially something like Wolfpack. The tools "look" realistic, but everything else is not. There is almost nothing to do in the game, gameplay is very repetitive. Shame that due to how slow the game is (it is not bad being a slow game) you only understand how poorly modeled it is after passing 2 hours. If I'd knew all that about this game, I wouldn't buy it even on sale.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Having served four years as a Radarman aboard a US Navy destroyer escort, I was pretty excited to find this game. The graphics are ok; but not groundbreaking. You'll mostly find yourself on a fairly placid and misty sea under a Maxfield Parrish sky at night. Game play quickly becomes hectic as you find yourself rushing from one contact report to another. It's really a computerized version of the movie Grayhound, and the story scenes are your typical WWII atmosphere and navy talk. At first…

I tried leaving the campaign to start a new one or double check if there's a tutorial and now the game freezes instantly when loading despite having no issue running it initially. Then to put the cherry on top, I checked for any recent updates that might give me answers and I find out the game has not been updated since May of last year and coming to find out…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good: If you've ever played Silent Hunter, U-Boat, or Iron Wolf, you can finally be the annoying speedy destroyer. The Devs have tried to make the core gameplay a solid simulation. You can choose to make the game as easy or hard as possible. Bad: The voice commands are similar to Arma 2's stitched call outs and the voice acting sounds like voice chat role-play. World is lacking in ambient sounds and the ocean likes to flavor one ear so I recommend music/40s themed music while playing.
