What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 137 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (1,520 of 1,763 positive).
Players praise the game's fun combat and variety of unlockable characters. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the levels are repetitive and the game is short. [1][4][5] Co-op mode is criticized for being buggy and broken by several players. [6][7]

I think this would be a completely fantastic game and totally worth it -- if it worked. Co-op mode is completely riddled with errors. Just in the 2 hour span we had - incorrect characters that we selected upon entering a stage, a end-game freeze that made us restart the run, my co-op partner was completely unsynced and unable to see enemies or various other aspects of the level, then finally after restarting our run …

A love letter to Double Dragon. The amount of characters to unlock that span practically every classic double dragon game is impressive. Every character feels unique to play with very distinct mechanics as well and are all satisfying to play as. My only negative is that it could use a few more levels. It does have a rogue-like mechanic where depending on what order you play each of the four levels the levels become …

Double Dragon Gaiden is the best thing to happen to this franchise since The Revenge. While there have been solid efforts in the past (Advance) and more recently (Neon), it is Gaiden where everything just clicks. The combo system, the partner-tag system, the specials, the 'crowd-controls,' the rogue-lite mechanics, and the variety of characters all make for an amazing and incredibly fun experience. Additionally, …

85% of the 137 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise Of The Dragons. The complaint that keeps coming up: levels are repetitive and few in number. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons received "mixed or average" reviews according to review aggregator Metacritic. In Japan, four critics from Famitsu gave the game a total score of 28 out of 40, with each critic awarding the game a 7 out of 10. Critics praised the game's animation and music, tag-team system, and replay value, but criticized it for uneven difficulty and the absence of online cooperative multiplayer at launch. Jarrett Green of IGN remarked that the tag-team system, combined with the large roster of playable characters, "turns a somewhat shallow pond of an early game experience into an impressive lake of collaborative combat options." Jamie O'Neill of Push Square…

But I have an 8bitdo Switch arcade stick. And I just bought this game yesterday. Now, I've only played it in handheld mode, but I cannot WAIT to get home, and play it with my arcade stick. It's use of in game currency to advance yourself really replicates the spirit of quarter draining. $1000 in game currency = a 1-up. There's upgrades though. If you buy…

You can experiment with mix-ups and tag team advantages, and multiplayer makes things altogether more enjoyable, although it’s restricted to local co-op. But, being associated with Double Dragon is arguably to its detriment. It’s a game that has secrets to uncover, twists to happen upon, and plenty of…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolute blast to play! It takes a bit of getting used to especially if you are coming from Streets of Rage 4, TMNT, or Marvel Cosmic Invasion, considering the pace is a bit slower at first. However once you get in a few run you start to understand the mechanics and scoring system. I also enjoyed the roguelike experience. Didn't get the opportunity to try co-op but I give Double Dragon Gaiden and a solid 8 out of 10. Really fun on the Steamdeck!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a REALLY good beat em up. I especially am a big fan of the rogue-lite elements that are present in this game, which make the game insanely replayable; obviously not including the content that is constantly being added to it as well as the survival mode, which really should be a necessity when it comes to replay value in beat em ups. If I have to recommend a beat em up to someone, this would be it. (Excluding RCR and RCG for reasons) Overrall, very fun, the combat hits like cocaine…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was surprisingly good. Based on the screenshots and video I thought it may end up being a game where I just end up mashing X my whole way through it. It's not the deepest beat em up in the world, but it has some great ideas that really solve some modern beat em up problems. For example, like other games in this genre you earn points and getting enough can give you a continue, BUT this game gives you the option to take a risk and spend all your tokens on upgrades instead. These will…

positive · AI labelView post →VERY cool version of classic Double Dragon... only 6 hours in so far, but the gameplay is addictive. Very simple to start, but you unlock characters through gameplay and each has their own variety... so much left to unlock - a great way to just "veg out and enjoy classic beat-em-up style gameplay"! 10/10, highly recommend if you love arcade beat-em-ups!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is it, people. The worst beat'em ever made. THIS IS NOT A DRILL I got this in a bundle of three games for $5 and I still feel taken advantage of. How does something like this game happen? I was under the distinct impression it would be a beat'em up. For those unfamiliar, a beat'em up involves choosing a character, then walking around a screen and punching dudes until they fall down. Sounds easy, right? And this game... technically accomplishes that. Unfortunately, they didn't stop there.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a social 2 player game, however that function is so buggy and broken it cant be played. Black screens, death of characters at beginning of the stage (during a black screen), progress not saving. Single player is fine, but I hate playing solo, therefore this game is useless to me. To bad can refund it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I picked this up on sale for about $6, and at first I thought I got a steal, but the more I played, the more I realized that was a fair price. It was fun for the first few hours. Simple, straightforward beat 'em up action. Movement was stiff, but I figured that was a design choice as a callback to the original. Punches felt good, though a couple characters had some awkward combos, including the main character. Music was 10/10, especially when you hit that last level. That was just *chef's…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →funny how the reverse happened: Kunio Kun was super-deformed thanks to River City sub-series being more popular, after the canon "River City Girls", they become standard-proportioned. It takes a little time to learn all the characters moves but as you unlock them as you go along (thanks to a clever arcade coin system), you get to spend time with each of them and learn which character works best in which situation. I only wish there were more factions to fight but changing the difficulty and playing factions in various orders give you a fresh run every time, for a while anyway. If you need to scratch that brawler itch…

Lots of playable characters with unique playstyles - whereas in most games I find my character and specialize, the 'tag-team' system encourages exploring how new characters work together. neutral · AI labelView post →I like my double dragon classic but I respect the attempt to bring something new to the table. It can be fun but it gets repetitive and there is a lot to grind for if you like that sort of thing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best DD games, although the bighead art style is not my personal favorite. *** I only played single player and it was awesome. Many other reviews say the co-op is broken. I cannot speak to this, but single player works perfectly. Not a single crash or issue in 65 hours. Lots of replayability due to the following: Many unlockable characters from the series, including bosses. Permanent (for that attempt) power-ups to purchase between levels. Multiple playstyles and movesets,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: Good and nostalgic soundtrack. Combat system is pretty good. Cons: Too short, too few levels. Poor choice of art direction. Although combat is pretty good it gets figured out pretty quickly and thats that. Leaning towards not recommending, WAY to few levels, and levels don't feel distinct. Some levels have a bit of verticality but it is just a pain in the ass - with poor art and depth perception you will drop for the hell of it. Other characters can't use items?

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the best double dragon I think I've ever played. I like beat em ups but often times I find myself getting tired quickly with the repetitive nature of some of the attacks. Not this game. There are tons of characters to unlock and your character has different strengths per run depending on what you unlock. The game on it's hardest difficulty solo play is really hard and I like that. It's a good challenge. Of course the game is even more fun with a friend but it's enjoyable either way.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It’s a very competent beat em up, with some roguelite elements thrown in. Normally I’m not too excited about roguelite stuff, but in this case I could beat the game straight through, with the choice of random power ups between levels. There’s no time wasting here, just an additional twist if you want to play through again with unlocked characters. I appreciate that actually, makes replays more interesting. Combat itself is really satisfying, with weapons to pick up, decent enemy variety, and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I’m not familiar with the Double Dragon series but this is gaiden, a spin-off or side story anyway. I’ve played quite a few beat ’em up games, this one feels great mostly because the key bindings are very user friendly. Usually in beat them ups, pressing the attack key once makes your character attack once. But here pressing the key once can trigger a 3 hit combo with different moves, which looks satisfying and impactful. The visual feedback is strong, the attacks are powerful - on easy mode…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played a few, and there's stuff like *Double Dragon Gaiden* that I've enjoyed (but it's pretty light on the roguelikeness). I got *Absolum* too, but I haven't played more than a couple of hours yet. I feel like they're designed to keep you playing over and over and being forever games. But the gameplay is just not there in most cases, at least for me. And I prefer the curated experience over a randomized experience every single run.
neutral · AI labelView post →Well it's a arcade Double Dragon version of Streets Of Red. What i like about it is every time you beat the game you win tokens to unlock new characters or art or music or new areas for duels. I'm happy that the Bimmy meme is live and well. Double Dragon Neon started the meme after Double Dragon 3 screw up on the NES and Famicom text typo. I recommend it because of the free updates. I hope more comes out soon.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game gets some basic right. Has nice pixelart and the music is pretty peppy if not memorable. The idea of being able to do the first four stages in any order, but the difficulty adjusting for the order they appear is pretty unique and clever. But the game itself is rather boring. The mechanics are very simple, whichever levels you pick as 3 and 4 get tediously long. You're railroaded into using certain techniques, as the only way to get health is to use certain moves. The upgrade system is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm kind of a sucker for pixel games. The random upgrades at the end of a stage reminds me a bit of Hades or TMNT Splintered Fate. I bought this and TMNT Splintered Fate together, and if I had to choose between the two I'd probably have to go TMNT. But it's a solid game nonetheless. Although, not a drawback I'd say save up your coins to buy the Mayor at 40 coins. He's OP and used well can wipe the floor with guys which is pretty helpful speeding up unlocks and progress. It's a decent game on…
