I love Lovecraft and I love retro adventure games but I hate lazy survival mechanics that just get in the way of playing a game and that's all this really boils down to in the end. You can't turn them off. I should be learning occult lore and interacting with interesting NPCs at a steady pace to try and uncover enough mind-blasting secrets to hopefully survive the events based on the fantastic Lovecraft story. A fantastic and relevant exploration of the fact that Lovecraftian deities and haunted houses are not nearly as frightening as trying to balance studying, rest and eating as a broke college student. What a great game! One of the best point-and-click adventures that I have played. By reading other people's reviews, you can see that not everyone liked the RPG / survival mechanics, but I actually thought that they were pretty well executed, and rather than being an annoyance I think they add a source of tension and danger to the game. Great Lovecraftian point-and-click adventure game following the events of H. P. Lovecraft's story of the same title. It has some light survival mechanics and an interesting gameplay loop with lots of replayability. First of all: I'm a huge Lovecraft nerd, having read nearly everything he wrote, and this game is pretty faithful to the specific short story and broader Cthulhu mythos. I’ll admit I probably didn’t do enough research before buying Dreams in the Witch House. At first glance it looked like a classic adventure game – which is exactly what I was hoping for. The graphics, animations, and atmosphere are really well done. I later realized it’s inspired by Lovecraft, and while I’m not familiar with that background, I still enjoyed the mood it created. Unfortunately, none of that could save the experience for me, because of the core gameplay. The RPG mechanics drag…

This is a resource/time management game disguised as a point-and-click mystery horror. Misleading at best. You spend 95% of your time trying to make money, not be tired, not be hungry, pass your classes, write your thesis, stay warm, stay dry, and also do other various tasks. If I wanted to do all that, I'd just do real life. Not a fun game.

I see the positive reviews, but I rather disagree, sorry. I didn't like it. I excitedly expected unraveling the eldritch mysteries, but instead of that I had to feed, treat, nurse Walter, bring him to work and schedule dates with Allyson. 10% Lovecraft, 90% Sims. Enough for me, I quit.

The survival elements ruin the game. There are things that are well done, like the setting and atmosphere, but that's it. You'll spend so much time and money trying to prevent starvation, getting sick, and sleep deprivation that you'll have no time or money for anything else. The weekly allowance and money you earn from chores isn't nearly enough, so half the time you'll be in poor health and losing sanity. And even when you buy items to help, like a raincoat or thermal underwear, they don't…

There are quite a lot of good things in this game. The Lovecraft story is well used and expanded, the art is great, there is non-linearity and reactivity. But it all drowns in the bog of survival micromanagement. I like games like Quest for Glory with character management options, but here it's too much. You will endlessly walk around a couple of the same scenes, watch unskippable animations, buy food, eat food, study, buy pills, take pills, pixel-hunt for books in the library, go to sleep…

What could have been a great adventure game is utterly ruined by fiddly survival mechanics, that even on easy mode take up 90% of the game's playtime and are more annoying than enjoyable. Give me a survival mechanic free mode and I'll happily finish the game, until then, I have less than zero interest in this.

Given the amount of positive reviews, this game may be a stellar Lovecraftian point & click game (I dig both of these), but oh boy, it is very well hidden under the "survival game". Quotation marks, because that part is as far from a game as possible. Bloated, redundant, grindy, annoying. You have to earn money to buy food and stuff. I liked the story but the trailer basically shows the whole game and the most interesting scenes. What it doesn't show are the survival and study mechanics which make out ~80% of the game and which do not add much fun to the game. I also didn't expect a point&click to have a rng-factor which might screw you over on occasion.

There might be a fun game here, but unfortunately it's hamstrung by a tedious survival mechanic. Even on easy, you're constantly having to buy food or sleep to keep yourself sane. I was managing okay, but got through two classes with A's before I realized I just wasn't having fun. I'm not sure why there is a survival mechanic in what otherwise would be an interesting point and click adventure game, but it certainly was a choice. I can't recommend this one.

This is a interesting one... The survival mechanics of everyday life make it very... different, but interesting to me. The Lovecraftian horror that slowly creeps into your life. Will you try to continue your studies until the horror can no longer be ignored, or will you confront the dark truth that will slowly consume your mind? You can feel the love and passion for the horror genre in every aspect. Highly recommended for fans of Lovecraft, point-and-click adventures, and slow-paced games.

Dreams in the Witch House is a uniquely atmospheric fusion of point-and-click adventure, survival mechanics, and subtle horror, developed by Atom Brain Games and published by Bonus Stage Publishing. Drawing inspiration from H.P. Lovecraft’s classic tale, the game reimagines Walter Gilman’s descent into madness as a slow, methodical, and player-driven experience. Set in the bleak winter of Arkham in 1929, the game captures both the mundane struggles of student life and the creeping dread of…

A fun game and good portrayal of the short story. Curiously, this game has a little bit in common with the Persona and Sims games - a lot of the gameplay involves balancing your time, doing well in school, your money, and your physical and mental needs. This sets it apart from most point & click games, which some people might like and some might not. I liked the unique take, and also really enjoyed playing in the Arkham world, meeting the cannon characters (like Armitage), the references, etc.

Very well made game! It captures the feeling of the novel plus allows one to make a lot of small decison that eventually add up and determine the fate of the main character. One point of notice: the game does not really hold your hand so you need to pay attention on how to play more effectively. While a bit frustrating at first, it lends it self very well for multiple playthroughs.

This is a very authentic Lovecraft adaptation that properly conveys the charm of the material. Instead of bombarding you with blood and dead fish and octopuses and nightmares with ominous voices telling you what to do from the get-go, it actually grounds you into a fairly normal setting and then gradually gets weirder from there. How crazy things actually get is also largely determined by the player's actions, since almost everything except staying alive is optional in this game. At the core of…

The "developer" used the craptastic Adventure Game Studio video game construction kit (designed to make ripoffs of Monkey Island, for people not talented enough to make a game like Monkey Island), copying + pasting and arranging premade assets, using premade level design tools so they could pretend they're an actual game developer. You have to balance studying for exams, writing a paper, making money to get by as a student, and, oh yeah, surviving the surreal horrors that haunt you during the night from the walls of your crummy rented room. I found myself totally invested in each story line and pressed for time and resources to complete any of them. This is such a fun, creepy, strange, and unique game.

Refunded. I really tried to like this game but the survival aspect is really stupid and not really thought out. Like when you woke up in the middle of the night because you see rat and then you go to sleep you will wake after noon and you can do chores around the house and make money. If dev adds mode where I can skip this stuff then I will buy and play this again but in current state no thx. What a shame.

Really fun adventure game with some small survival/management elements. A little trouble figuring a few things out the first time around, but definitely worth a play-through. Took 15~20 hours to get most achievements + beat the game, another few hours to 100% some last achievements.

Incredibly fun, polished, new experience and one of the best adventure games I've ever played. A game that semi-randomizes each puzzle and dramatically changes the outcomes based on how you manage your resources, your skills and your choices, in a weirdly cozy early 900s vibe. The level of interactivity and secrets is simply amazing. Need to fix a boat with a tin sheet and expensive tar? steal a shop sign and brew your own glue with your chemistry knowledge. Make friends with a neighbour…

As strange as it sounds, this game has kind of become my comfort game. Watching Walter struggle and overcome the challenges of college life and some eldritch horror makes me want to do better in real life. I recommend Ironman mode—live with your choices, there’s always a tomorrow.

Loved it! After playing Dredge I wanted to play another Lovecrafty-ish game. It gave me more than I asked for: The atmosphere, the typical "is it all happening or is it only in my mind...? am I dreaming?" Gameplaywise: You have your typical horror survial features with sanity, sleep, hunger, you have to manage your money and I adivise playing the game at least twice because trust me, the first time you will f* up everything. However, this way it's way more intense and spooky. The second run I…
