What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 50 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (82 of 109 positive).
Players praise the game's strong 80s aesthetic and soundtrack. [1][2][3] Some find the dice-rolling mechanics and repetition frustrating. [4][5][6] The game is seen as a fun strategy title with board game influences. [7][8][9]

The game has its highlights with its retro vibe and diversity of missions. After a while, it simple becomes repetitive, as the only thing that changes is the difficulty of the game. The dice rolling system, though designed to include bonus, simply is a turn off. A luck factor can be fun, but over time it simply gets frustrating.

To get it out of the way: Despite the name, this isn't a porn game. I've played enough to get a rough feel for the game's mechanics, and this is really new, so I figure I should give some feedback and a review while I can. Let's do this in pros and cons. PROS: The aesthetic. I'm going to include the art and the music together here, because it's all entwined and is part of the reason why I bought the game. The …

This is a fun strategy game that oozes theme. The art is absolutely on point. Agents, gear, and locations are represented with fun, stylish illustrations that blend nostalgia with good-natured satire. The board game inspired mechanics are streamlined and pair perfectly with the sleek neon interface. Different mission types sport different mechanics, and there are around a dozen different mini-games that keep the …

Target Audience: Players who are hard to frustrate and want a 80s theme in board game mechanics Summary: Rough Justice 84 has the theming and has the strategy elements that really work well for the first 10-15 hours. There's a good mixture of luck, skill, and strategy that make your decisions worth while, all in a theme that captures the 80s aesthetic. The music sets the mood rather nicely, and the mixture of …

The resource management, crime and puzzle game I didn't know I needed! The 80's vibes are unbeatable! Crime and puzzlement! Every Agent you can hire is amazing. Whether flashy or somber and muted, they fit right in with 80's crime and other classics. Half the fun is role-playing your own way and leveling up your favorite agents to your liking. The traits at every 3rd level are really fun! I really hope the indie …

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has SO MUCH potential, but it's hindered by poor gameplay mechanics and terrible mouse detection. You start by choosing a detective ho assigns a random number of cases on the map you must complete before their respective timers run out and they are failed. Completing these will earn you minute amounts of cash, agent exp and relationship exp. Once the caseload is turned in, you'll get a total of all the relationship exp to level the detective up to unlock more cases with higher…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The vibes looked cool on the store page, but I found the game to be quite repetitive. It just becomes a chore of sending the right agent to the job and maybe doing a puzzle, all of which are interesting at first but become boring since that's all you do in game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rough Justice: '84 is a casual strategy / management game with mechanics heavily inspired by board games. Although a board game with a similar name exists, the two have different concepts and playstyles. In Rough Justice: '84 you take on the role of Jim Baylor, a super cop that has just been released from prison after being wrongfully accused and jailed for several years. Seeing that the crime rate of Seneca City has considerably increased while he was out of duty, he decides to accept his…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rough Justice: '84 is one of those games I thought I would buy, then play in short half hour bursts to get a nostalgia fix and roll some dice. Hours later I'm figuring out how to keep my favorite agents on the field, working out optimum routes to get gear, and do I really need that bank loan? As someone who enjoys 80s nostalgia, you can see the team behind this do too. But despite the popular backdrop, the game itself is really fun and has depth I was not expecting to be honest. But let's talk…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've spent a significant amount of time now with Rough Justice: '84, beginning as a play-tester for the Alpha Demo almost a year ago in 2022, so witnessing this game's journey and evolution is something I have really enjoyed viewing alongside playing the game overall. I originally reviewed the Alpha Demo here: https://blondemoment.net/game-reviews/2022/g-round-review-rough-justice-84/ RJ84 conceptually won me over with its description of being set in the 80s and the Neo(n)-Noir genre, but…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a super stylized 80s/noir strategy game, centered around resource planning mechanics and puzzle solving. The strategy element is complex enough, while not going over the top. The puzzles are a huge variety of mini-game-like scenes where there's usually some key insight to figure out before you can solve it. There's also a well written story with great VO that will keep you entertained. Recommended if you're into 80s/noir/Strategy!

Artstyle is beautiful and unique - it reminds me of Disco Elysium set in Hotline Miami I love it. - 9/10Music is a solid vibe back to the 80s, definitely delivers a well thought out and performed soundtrack - 9/10Gameplay and mechanics are easy to pickup and clearly explained, at this early point it feels like a game thats easy to learn but hard to master. Bit of a rogue-like feel to it - 8.5/10Storyline and dialogue are engaging and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great indie title with a superb 80s vibe. Being a teen in the 80s this brings back quite some memories. Had huge fun playing the first missions and love the overall style of the game. Cannot wait to get back into it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rough Justice 84 is a case of good ideas that don't necessarily make for a good game. First of all, the description isn't exaggerating when it says this is a board game, so if you're not into board game-esque dice rolls, this won't be for you at all. But once you're in, the game makes a strong first impression. The 80s aesthetic is excellent, and everything from the font to the colors to the way the character models appear nails the time period. There's also a strong roleplaying element to the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I just picked this up on launch, and it's very fun. 80s AF, as advertised, but amazingly fun. It reminds me a lot of the Arkham Horror games mechanics, but put into an 80s noir style. Great fun. Highly recommended. Raven is my favorite.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm late to the party with this review. I have taken a slow and casual pace with this adventure. I am a geezer, and I spent my teens in the '80s. I doubt it gives me an edge, but I find a few aspects gnarly. So before you ask, "Where's the beef?" lemme tell you this game has it. Plenty of hidden gems, but some folks may need geology and history degrees to get them. I did find one point that is grody. It may be a legitimate bug in the gameplay, as any other game could have. It freezes - lags -…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unique take on digital board games with a great story. Scratches that dice roll itch but also provides alternatives to completing a dice roll with interactive puzzle minigames if you don't trust that you'll be able to meet the roll requirements. Lots of fresh ideas here, tied together against a backdrop that is just oozing the jaded, nihilistic views of 80s noir film. Don't even get me started on the sexy synth soundtrack. Purchase is worth it for the bangin OST alone tbh. If you're looking…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The aesthetic of this game is superb. The graphics, music, voice acting, and sound design is pretty stellar. It delivers a sleek world that's easy to become immersed in. The UI is well designed and easy to understand. I'm a big fan of management-style games. 911 Operator was brilliant, and while I never played This is the Police personally I got a feeling from watching others that I would like it. This game, on its surface, is comparable to those. Beneath the surface, however, is a collection…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Keeping with the trend of video-game characters (Brock was in a game called 'Rough Justice', Strong Bad had 'Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People'), I'd pick: - Carol (Freedom Planet) - Shade (The Longing) - Morgan Yu (Prey) - P03 (InScryption) And as dealer: The Fabulous Fear Machine.
neutral · AI labelView post →Just completed the first story chapter out of 5, and God it's a shame this game didn't get more traction. If it did, the map controls could've been polished, the bugs could've been eradicated, the occasional voice drafts (I'm sure some of the draft placeholders seeped into the final game) would be replaced. And then, it would be a very solid game with original premise, palpable atmosphere of the 80s, and the soundtrack to kill for (I even bought it which is something I never do). In any case,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had been watching this game for a couple years before I decided to purchase and was pretty hyped for the game. I decided after a couple months that the time had finally come to give it a spin. I was concerned due to the mixed reviewed, that it would be a very tedious game, however I've been pleasantly surprised. The vibe of the game is fantastic and the developers have clearly put a lot of work into nailing the 80's vibe. The main story makes great use of it's setting, and at times feels…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really enjoyed it, art style was on point and the audio was fantastic, not far enough into it yet to see how long it plays/replayability, but so far I'm having a blast, enjoying all the little 80s nods thrown in throughout. It does take up quite a bit of GPU resources, but nothing major!

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rough Justice: ’84 is a strategy and management game developed by Gamma Minus and published by Daedalic Entertainment that blends detective storytelling, board-game mechanics, and puzzle-style mini-games into a distinctive crime-themed experience. Set in the stylized environment of a fictional American city during the mid-1980s, the game places players in charge of a private security and investigation agency attempting to restore order in a crime-ridden metropolis. Rather than focusing on…

neutral · AI labelView post →Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this game in good faith. Right from the intro, there are a few typos and misspells, which wouldn't be so bad if the game weren't so text-based. This game is REALLY rough around the edges and you can see so right from the title screen. Sloppy work. Also, the game is VERY poorly optimized and runs VERY choppily even in its lowest graphics settings. Combine that with the now slower-than-intended "typewriter" text effect and you're in for a sluggishly slow ride. At…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A good detective agency management game with great voice acting, stylish art, a catchy soundtrack and some unfortunate rough edges, namely some questionable plot twists, plenty of (non-gamebreaking) bugs and typos and jarring performance drops during certain minigames.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The music alone is reason enough! Great game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Although I've only played Rough Justice: '84 for a short amount of time, I'm absolutely loving it so far! The art design and music is all incredible and suits the game-play very well. It all just runs so smoothly. There are so many elements and different things to play around with and it's all very easy to learn. Despite not playing very many games like this before, I've had no issues understanding how any of it works or what I should be doing, thanks to the well-made tutorials. I've spent a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has a very nostalgic and slick 80s feel to it. I love the synthwave soundtrack and look to the game. You have the management system in place as you control the tasks that are completed by your hired agents, you have the puzzle elements that you solve as you choose a different case worker to work for and then you have the board game element with the dice rolling. RNG runs this game and you can add to the dice being rolled with gear that helps you to stand a better chance of succeeding.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is superb. Chefs Kiss to the developers. They have captured the essence of an extremely fun "board game", removed all of the tedious and time consuming setup a physical tabletop game like this would actually take up and make this perfect game for us. it is incredibly addicting and fun.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was recommended to me by Steam. I looked at the store page and was instantly attracted by the lovely ladies in the screenshots. I was lucky to pick it up for a steal during a sale. Once I started playing, I discovered the following flaws: tedious gameplay, terrible puzzles, non-existent difficulty and a ridiculous story. But the game kept me engaged and I completed it. It’s definitely an underrated experience for those who can look past the flaws.

neutral · AI labelView post →I did some concepts/backgrounds for a game called 'Rough Justice '84'. I enjoyed creating them, but they did take a lot of work. The base was done in Blender, and there was research to keep all assets in the 80s. I kept them stylized to match the purple city they used as a map.

neutral · AI labelView post →Several annoying issues that exist since the demo was available The game itself isn't so bad per se, but the flaws predominate. I only bought this game so I can write this review and then refunded it... EDIT: I actually ended up playing it some more to give the full version a chance... but my opinion didn't change: There's only so much you can influence with good management, the right agent and equipment etc., but if the stars aren't right, you will fail a challenge only because of bad luck,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played games like this in the past and they've been alright. Nothing to write home about. However, Rough Justice: '84 has been phenomenal. The mini-games break up the monotony often seen in manager games, great voice acting, great music, great scenarios. The mini-games that I mentioned are just top notch. The shining star on this one has to be the character models though. I feel like I know some of these people that I'm hiring. Based on their look and abilities along, they feel like…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very cool 80s vibe. Fun strategy and planning mechanics with some luck involved. Will play more later.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unplayable at this stage. I'm using Win 10 and it displays messages (tutorials, case descriptions a character per second or two) what makes such a display mode relevant for illiterates. It may be an interesting product when this feature will be fixed (i.e. when whole message will be displayed at once).
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was happily surprised by this game having not played time management game of this style in quite a while. Firstly, love that 80s style and the music is great! The interface is very intuitive, the game offers a lot of diversity in the missions/mini games you end up doing with the agents. One thing I didn't know until after playing a bit that there is the ability to pause the time, so much easier then as I thought the game was too frantic otherwise at time. So far enjoying it very much and its a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an innovative and fun game! The concept is something I have not seen before in this manner, and I love the 80's vibe with the music and characters. The minigames are fun to do and require quite a bit of practise and skill at higher levels. The game is relatively unforgiving, which is not a blocker for me. It's definitely not impossible, but it does require you to make the right decisions. Add a dash of luck in and honestly, no playthrough is the same. Great game overall, would highly…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lock-picking mini-games aren't new. Elder Scrolls did it. Thief did it. Dozens of RPGs did it. So why did ours rack up millions of views? I designed the lockpick puzzle for Rough Justice: '84 — and it became the most-streamed moment in the game. Not because it was original. Because it felt right.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't even know what to say, this "game" is an absolute mess and it doesn't feel like a game at all. Refunded.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is a lot to unpack here. I'm going to give this game a positive simply because it deserves to pass the generally positive threshold, mainsly for the story and artstyle. The gameplay itself is simple and minimalistic, but does its job to keep the player entertained throughout the main story playtthrough for around 10 hours. And I do recommend giving it a shot as the plot develops in quite unexpected way with the intrigue thickening with every chapter. Towards the end we are not solving…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dead Darlings: "Cryptovox" is a puzzle game that I started to develop for Rough Justice: '84. It utilized a "voice modulator decrypter". This game didn't make the cut, hence the "Dead Darling" status. The idea was to decipher the audio within a certain amount of time with 3 tweakable variables.
neutral · AI labelView post →As in update of 2024, The art style, retro theme and story`telling are accurate and genuinely liked by audience. The amount of detail it goes into unique character designs, including voice acting for individual dialogue for agents is great, and when talking about the story at times is appealing to follow along to. However now we have to talk about the issue with Rough justice and its core gameplay, depending on your first time playing you can get REALLY bad RNG and lose all of your money…

neutral · AI labelView post →This is SO BUGGED. upon a load one of my agents wouldn't budge or accept any jobs. Some of the minigames were literally impossible with -1 values some agents returning to office just freeze and then take up a slot forever. On top of the bugs moving the map is infuriating. the only good map is when you zoom out all the way and with that map it will not let you unpause. sometimes when scrolling the map does some 360° spins for giggles.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love to see when developers try something different in their games, especially in today's industry. This game is the epitome of what it means, to me, to be a great indie game. The aesthetic is amazing, the game is simple enough to pick up, but delivers a good amount of depth to keep you interested and the story, while totally 80s, is great BECAUSE it's totally 80s :D I've only played a small amount of time, but I was able to get in, learn the game and do a fair amount of the varying…
