I've been following, playtesting, and supporting Dwerve for a long time -- a few years at least. There are several things this game did well - the art, sound, and polish are enjoyable. The world is fairly interesting, and the story is decent. And at the end of the day, Half Human Games spent years making a quality indie game. and that alone is truly a big achievement. It's a super fun idea, and it's a decent …

Spoiler free review, with a short and a longer version: Buy this game if: ✅ You're looking for a unusual tower defense game using upgradable traps to fight hordes of enemies in real time, while being a frail and slow moving young dwarf; ✅ You prefer short, hectic hasty combat rather than longer and strategic planning before and during enemy waves; ✅ You're looking for a good challenge even on "normal" difficulty …

I recommend this... But just barely. You only get to lay a few traps at a time so unfortunately the strategy seems kind of minimum. Also the game defaults to the hardest difficulty, but that's just barely challenging. Though the game is linear I think that's fine, I think the tower defense and action need more depth. Also all the bosses were easily defeated using only the crossbow turret.

Dwerve is an unforgettable TD game that I have enjoyed thoroughly. I see alot of complaints from people about the lack of towers you can place, but this forces you to lean on the strengths and weaknesses of tower types you have access to at the time. (There are quite a few!) For the die hard TD fans out there, might not be your bread and butter just because it is simple, but, this is a fantastic intro to the TD …

Target Audience: Those with any parting interest in Tower Defense Summary: While it was on my radar after seeing it in the Upcoming Games section, Dwerve surprised me in it's fast tower defense gameplay, and fusion with the adventure genre. The fast pace of action keeps you on your toes, forcing quick decisions and rewarding good pathfinding to avoid enemies, while still being challenging in the process. A good …

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dwerve! 4 hours in! tbh I'm enjoying this game a lot! The blend of exploring the world and engaging in the combat with tower defense-based mechanics has been really fun! The world is interesting and fun to explore, and I like the fast-paced nature of the combat, it's challenging! It's great so far!
positive · AI labelView post →I played the demo and was looking forward to what they could bring after all the feedback. And after all the feedback... the gameplay hasn't changed. Tower defence hybrid games aren't necessarily bad in itself, having played Sanctum years earlier. However, unlike in Sanctum, you have minimal interactions with your turrets, once you put them down, you basically go afk until they break. Because all you have is a single auto attack that only works if you're not moving. Upgrades are also done out…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Next game is Dwerve! ngl I know absolutely nothing about this game, I bought it purely based on the fact that I found the name funny 🤣 from the cover art, it might be a Zelda-like game, but that's speculation fr 😅 going into games completely blind is fun tho, so I'm excited to jump into this game!
positive · AI labelView post →Dwerve! 7 hours in! I like how the game gives you a variety of turrets! It gives the player a ton of freedom to approach battles in the way that they want to, which is nice! That being said, the enemies are growing in variety as well, with ways to counter certain turrets! It's been a lot of fun!
positive · AI labelView post →In terms of the gameplay of Dwerve, my first impressions are: it's pretty cool! It's an adventure game, with combat being in the style of tower defense! You can still move around in combat, and situations can change quickly, meaning you have to be quick on building defenses. It's unique and fun!
positive · AI labelView post →This track is called "Grombli's Hunger"! Dwerve was a super cool game! tbh it was a really refreshing game, it was an adventure game where the combat was a unique spin on tower defense! It was also a pretty difficult game, I lost quite a few battles 😅 it was a ton of fun tho, it's a hidden gem fr!
positive · AI labelView post →Reviewing this briefly before the refund goes through. I was really excited for this game and it looked like a lot of fun, but a cute art style only goes so far. There is a pretty obvious lack of polish in this game in a lot of areas. Some things are hard to interact with, sometimes the game glitches and you get stuck out of bounds, but the worst and most disappointing aspect of this game is that the core gameplay is.... boring. The whole point of having a character in a tower defense game is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A tower defence game with a limit of 4 towers. Poor progression, limited to 6 power crystals or 3 turrets for the majority of the game. Boring upgrades for towers, ex: 10% more damage, 30% chance at 150% damage (yawn). Very little strategy, basically just run around spamming 3 towers down and dodging. Forgettable story that is just a series of fetch quests. Game will often gate you off from back tracking so you can't collect, uncollected health potions.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game embodies the notion of not respecting your time. It's not really any single egregious example, just a non-stop flow of small delays. It's so consistent that it feels more like a design philosophy than an accident. The easiest example has to be the puzzles: None of the switches have any indication on what they go to, so trial and error is necessary. That wouldn't bother me so much if I hadn't noticed that you can bypass checking each switch by just looking for the longest path…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kickstarter backer, loved the idea, thought this could be really fun. Unfortunately it's not. It's not very engaging, there's a painful amount of walking around to solve uninteresting puzzles, and is quite frankly boring. Would love to be able to recommend this one but just can't
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like this one. I think what really ruined it for me is the lack of planning steps. In games like Orcs Must Die! or Dungeon Defenders I can look through and plan where I want towers to go and where I'll make my stand. In Dwerve I get ambushed and have to just frantically drop towers around me and hope that I chose the right ones. Collision with my own towers is also incredibly frustrating. Edit: The QoL changes in the recent patch made me want to to try Dwerve again. I picked…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When trying the demo I saw potential. But when as full game: As a TowerDefense game it is not enough, because your limited to 4 different traps and towers available at a time and you can have at most 3 (later 4) tower constructed/active. As a TowerDefense hybrid it offers too little in ways you can be active/interactive with enemies or towers. All together it results in not having quality or quantity to prevent it from becoming stale quickly. At discount it maybe worth a try, if you enjoy TD…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The concept of the game is cool you make turrets and you fight. I expected to have a balance between trying out cool combinations of towers together with fast tower-based fights. However what you get is more like a puzzle game, with no real cool progression. I am stuck with the same amount of max power gems for ages already whereas you get cooler turrets you cannot make cool combinations because the amount you can put down is too limited. The creativity that the game offers is broken by the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It doesn't feel like a classical tower defense. That can either be good or bad depending on what you're looking for. Where a classical tower defense is like "Plan carefully. Take your time." This one is more a "Yo! Enemies will spawn here and here. You have five seconds to set up your defense!". So the main challenge comes from quickly adjusting to the situations you're thrown into. I'd say it's really quite fun once you get the hang of it and accept it for what it is. Can recommend! :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is just not particularly good or exciting. The core idea is somewhat unique, but everything else is mediocre.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Went in blind. Enjoyed my time. but i hate the limitation on towers and lack of power stones, How short the story was. was expecting like 2 maybe 3 more areas to stretch out the world a bit more. the game is 8hrs long or so. i wanted top open every chest but gave up when one map was bugged when i circled it 4 times and restarted it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall a very good game. Interesting combat mechanics, there are multiple weapons and options to combine them. The gameplay is challenging and the art is simple yet beautiful. Also you carry a cat in your backpack which I forgot to mention. 10/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I agree with most of the CONs already written here. During the fight : *Maniability is awfull. *Lack of accuracy when you choose to remove (or put) a tower. *No pause (you should at least be able to look at the map !). No chance to lead a proper battle with good strategy, it's messy, not valorisating. After the fights : *No exp. *No loot. *No combat ranking (for extra reward for example). You just loot cog (by autoattacking bushes, pots, and opening chests) and buy upgrades. Music and gfx…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I only enjoyed the game during the first hour. It felt refreshing to have a tower defense element to a RPG. However, it soon became boring as the story is very linear, your objective is to go to A, then it asks you to go B, then C and so on. We do not really learn much about the characters. The combat is rather dull too, and it feels repetitive after a while. You get new towers along the way but most are useful only in certain situations. My biggest issue with the game is the inability to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game left mixed feelings, it feels a bit unfinished after midgame. When i reached epic smelter place i expected to see some FIRE AND AWESOMENESS but got just boring animated lava instead. There is no special effects in game AT ALL lol. So visually it could be done better. Also it is not real tower defence, more like trap defence. very single point defence. Personally i would like to play something that let you to place 10-15 turrents, make pathways etc... Nice story.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is great example of "sweet idea, shame about the execution". It has this promise of complex, strategic gameplay, as is all over the trailers. Unfortunately it only lasts to slightly past the tutorial, after which combat devolves into spamming spike traps and tanky melee turrets while frantically running away. You see: the tutorial teaches you this methodical gameplay style where you carefully pick a strategic position for the turrets you're carrying (putting a chasm between the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →14 hours to completion including cooking dinner while I was playing. Zero replayability, linear with zero back tracking, very little RPG or character building and no secrets to find. I'm only Giving the game a thumbs up because it was a very innovative way to do tower defense game and I hope to see more of it in the future but just much more interesting than this. Could have let us use turrets to find secrets to build the ultimate turret or something more life, faster moving, better hammer…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm loving Dwerve! Like many here, I've been following the game progress. I also watch Pixel Pete's YouTube. I'm really sad to see the mixed reception as I was hoping the game would be an overnight success, and it still might :) It just got released and sure, some tweaks need to happen. There's nothing about Dwerve in it's current state that could warrant a down-vote imho. If you enjoyed the demo, you're highly likely to enjoy the game. Dwerve's combat and strategy play much like the demo to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm loving this so far. The gameplay is interesting and fun once you get the hang of it. The art style is really beautiful and I'm looking forward to learning more about the story!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Enjoying so far. Gorgeous art. Not without a few minor issues here and there but overall having a good time. Definitely a unique take on combat, looking forward to seeing more options open up as the game progresses.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →🕹 Dwerve has been out for some years for PC and Switch but will be coming for the PS on the 14th. I came across a pic of it yesterday and @mysticmuffin.bsky.social identified the game for me. 🧡 Dwerve describes itself as a tower defense dungeon crawler RPG. Here's a review. youtu.be/c9q9mfHfz6k?...
neutral · AI labelView post →Well this game has an interesting idea some points aren't the best. The fights are fun sometime but also frustrating and annoying at others like in the boss fights of the game, the first few are easy but still very fun, then they get annoying it turns into the boss moving from all your turrets giving no attack windows (and when they do they immediately destroy your buildings anyway), and the boss summoning as many annoying minions as they can. Another part is the boring story, it works since…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I agree its a mix of Tower Defense and Zelda. Unfortunately its very weak with both mechanics. It is extremely repetitive with little to no change between fights. Walk a bit, gates from the ground come up, prepare for the 70th monster spawn in an hour.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was really looking forward to this game, but honestly it got extremely repetitive with little to no change between fights. Place turrets, win fight, progress story, repeat. There is very little tactics in where you place the turrets, just run around and spam them. It gets pretty boring after the first 5-10 fights.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A unique take on the TD genre as it blends RPG, TD and adventure. Dwerve has a great story to tell, layered characters, and awesome music. With all of that its well worth your time with the price tag. Nothing more to add, get the game and enjoy.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Had been waiting for this game for a very long time and I'm blown away! The art is incredible and the combat system is new and unique. Looking forward to playing this game more!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Widescreen support works great! TY for supporting my 21:9
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cutesy tower defense game with nice pixel art? I'm in, instantly. But this game seems to have not been tested enough, at least the story mode, the encounters are so unbalanced it's not even fun. It relies on trial and error in order to find the perfect spot with perfect turret combination to beat and that is not my idea of a tower defense game. I had to lower the difficulty to easiest and it was still painfully hard, it doesn't seem to do anything regarding enemy damage or speed. I beat the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was fun until after a while I had to repeat waves over and over again to find the one single specific strategy to beat it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's really fun to try out different builds and re-spec your character. There's a huge variety of enemies to combat and the story is good enough to make you want to know what happens next.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Before reviewing the game in details, I would like to say that the game is decent. if you like indie games, try it, you'll probably have fun (there's a demo to test it out before buying) but don't expect much more. Now i'm gonna share my opinion of how I felt about the game, what it was lacking and why it could've been immensly better. First of all, let's start with the positives : - The Art is splendid and it gives a retro Zelda vibe with more vibrance; - The characters are lovely designed. -…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lets start by saying when I STARTED playing this game, it was actually pretty damn HYPE! Loved the idea of resource management in a TD game that stayed ADAPTIVE -Throwing down towers for a set of enemies and then readapting to a new set of enemies on the fly felt really awesome. I WOULD LOVE to see TD games run with this concept it felt fresh and exciting in a world where usually you throw down towers and just watch them go. THAT BEING SAID - The game felt very... limiting(?) with its…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Didnt really catch me, and from what I can see from other reviews, the things that bothered me wont get any better. I wont be refunding the game since the devs seem to be putting their best into it, and what I disliked isnt really a flaw, but rather that the gameplay didnt speak to me. Overall, it just seemed very limiting.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Walking is so slow and all the puzzles are solved by "walking in circles and click stuff until the door opens". I bought the game because of turrets and the fights which are fun. Main complaint is that 50% of the game is walking so you can get one more coin. Autosave is perfect. Fights are fun but could be better.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The first thing I liked about Dwerve off the bat was the dialogue, graphics, music, etc... the entire aesthetic is so fun! So much attention to detail in every aspect, way to go! I found the gameplay challenging, but doable. I usually suck at games that need you to react quickly, so Dwerve definitely challenges me in that aspect but after trying different methods, I was able to figure out better strategies. I particularly appreciated the checkpoints and the fact that you will definitely die…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Incredibly boring. If you want a TD game, this isn't it. If you want a puzzle game, this isn't it. *Unless you are playing while your brains in a medical jar Just spend your wares on something better, maybe Dungeon Warfare 2 if you like TD games.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lots to dislike about this game. Biggest issue is that leaving the game resets your turret loadout, which deletes all permanent upgrades you've purchased over the course of the story, significantly and irrevocably weakening your character. This is a game-breaking level bug. For a game which claims to encourage exploration, the character is obnoxiously slow. Cutscenes are frequent, clunky, and slow. Dialogue is pretty bad. Controls aren't great. Story isn't anything special. Looks pretty…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dwerve is extremely fun and I enjoyed the campaign very much (par vandras stupid 50 ball energy attack that aims at you after hitting turrets.) I was left however wanting more after you beat the game I feel the ending is too sudden I want explore the world a bit more. 7/10 experience.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I LOVE this game! The gameplay is a ton of fun and intense at times. The art style is very nostalgic and has great color palettes. The main character looks awesome and the story is very rich. The game really takes off after the short tutorial. I recommend using a controller. 8/10!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Usually i don't write rewrite but this game should have a overwhelmingly positive rating. It is fun mix of RPG and Tower Defense. It runs great on the Steam Deck with 40 FPS frame limit it consumes ~8 Watt and it should last 4-5 hours.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"Dwerve" is a true gem that embodies several of my favorite characteristics of indie games - genre blending/mash-up, small but super passionate dev team, great music and sound design, pixel art, and delightfully comedic writing. You play as a young Dwarven warsmith (after the fall of the great Dwarven empire) with a huge array of fully upgradeable turrets you can plop down at will to defend against swarms of enemies as you dungeon crawl and slap bosses around. Solid gameplay, a lot of really…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tower Defense my a$$
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Personally, I think it is quite interesting that incorporate RPG elements compared to traditional tower defense games which just fixed-point. However, although the idea is really nice, there are many problems in details, which seriously affects the game experience.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's okay. It's kinda RPG kinda tower defense but doesn't do either particularly well and the music and story is pretty forgettable but it's a cool concept. The pixel art is really nice though.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After about 11 hours of playtime, I can only say that the game is more than fun to play. The narrative is well written, and Dwerve's personal story and world lore is getting deeper the further I played through the game. Mechanics are interesting - you will have to position your self well when putting those turrets down, and you will have to learn from your mistakes, often. I recommend playing this game with the controller, because that way movement is 1k times more fluid and enjoyable.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've played three hours of the demo and the actual game and I have to say this is a pretty neat tower defence game except you can move around! 7/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game, but it is not the typical TD experience. You have very little time to set up your towers and they can be consequential in some cases as they can block your path. It takes a bit to get used to how combat is done in the game, but once you do get used to it you can handle most combat situations. I believe the game does a good balance of TD aspects while keeping parts of combat fast-paced. Personally, I don't understand the other reviews saying you have to die many times in an…
