I really wanted to like this game - but it just has so many faults that I can't recommend it, and it's a shame because it has all the right ingredients to be a great JRPG, it's just that the implementation fell short. Three big problems: -difficulty / game balance -game mechanic relevance -English localisation So, I am a big fan of the old Suikoden 2, and JRPGs in general, I originally had high expectations for this …

I'm 8 hours in and it's painfully boring. There's cutscenes every few seconds so you barely get to play, and the story isn't very interesting. It's the same loop on repeat: - enter area - recruit new character - small dungeon with boss - move to next area There's an illusion of an open world but it's actually linear, e.g. you can play through a dungeon but the boss doesn't spawn until you backtrack across the map, …

so... im recommending it BUT be advised, its not for everyone. The game is gorgeous, sprite works, music, art in general, the vibes, so many mini games, game modes and companions. Everything should be a perfect storm of a game. The big problem of the game is the combat, its ASS, like its VERY BAD. Im 30 hours in, ive beaten many bosses and i play on hard and i still do mostly auto combat. Theres near nothing to do, …

Achievement Completed: 100% Score: 7.5/10 After clocking in the final achievements (25+ hours of post-game cleanup), I’m ready to share my thoughts. Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is a decent JRPG, but as a Suikoden veteran, I felt it leaned a bit too heavily on nostalgia. If I didn’t know the dev team's history, I would have mistaken this for a high-effort fan game; it mirrors Suikoden II closely, yet often …

70% of the 198 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. The complaint that keeps coming up: poor English localization with awkward dialogue. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

Critics, per Wikipedia

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes received "generally favorable reviews" on Windows, Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, according to review aggregator website Metacritic. In Japan, four critics from Famitsu gave the game a total score of 33 out of 40. Game Informer awarded it an 8/10, saying "archaic structures makes those first impressions tough to look past, but a creative battle system, extensive party customization, and top-notch writing make up for the retro jank." Game Informer however criticized the gameplay for being outdated at certain points, such as having an empty open world and some tedious dungeons to go through. Godisageek praised the game, saying that "Eiyuden Chronicle:…

The creator of Fire Emblem left Nintendo to make his own studio, and games like Fire Emblem the way he wanted to. He was sued, but that lawsuit is now why games like Bloodstained or Mighty No. 9 or Eiyuden Chronicle can exist now, due to precedent. Oh, and Tear Ring Saga is great in its own right.

I’ve played 8 hours now into Suikoden I & man it’s been a great time. I love the turn-based combat system. I love how it uses all the systems that I know from playing Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes like how you upgrade your weapons & recruit people. It’s just a super chill JRPG & I respect it. ❤️🫶🏻

Screw this game. I played all the Suikoden games and liked each of them. Waited for years for Eiyuden Chronicle to come out. The game itself is ok, but the thing with this and Suikoden is you're not a serious fan and don't get the "true" ending if you don't recruit all the characters. I played through the whole game and found myself at the final battle with two missing characters. I looked up how to recruit them and it turns out they are locked behind 20+ hours of absolutely abhorrent mini…

Discarded this game because of its awful dialogs. TIL that the company that localized it had several scandals regarding politicized and modernized dialogs in settings where they don't belong. The game is fun, and I'll give it another chance after installing a mod tha fixes the localization issues. But my review will be negative until the developer comes out, condemns Dragonbaby for their awful work, and redoes the localization. Meanwhile, don't spend more than 5-15 on this, they don't deserve…

It's been two years since the game came out, but I couldn't progress through the final boss duel due to a bug and ended up playing for 72 hours. The game isn't bad; those who like the genre will enjoy it, but despite two years passing, a serious bug hasn't been fixed. The final part, especially the cutscenes, is full of lag and bugs. You might want to commit to it knowing this.

The writing has felt incredibly sub par, filled with Joss Whedon'isms "ERM, SO THAT JUST HAPPENED" Also, it's infuriating how they do not make it clear at all where characters need to be placed in your party format for hero combos to be active. I put off getting this game because I was concerned that Murayama's last game would be bad, and here we are. Just go emulate suikoden 2 instead. EDIT - I forgot to mention a few things. Got this game from a friend who didn't want it. I'm a big JRPG nut, so I was mildly excited about this. The game's pedigree wasn't one I was familiar with, but the premise seemed interesting enough to at least try. Unfortunately, at 24 hours in I don't think I care much to see the rest of it. The game isn't bad. In many ways, I'd describe it as "the most JRPG of all time". It has turn based combats, it's got a bunch of minigame side quests, there's fishing, there's town building, there's…

I love the premise of the mass recruitment, the additional field battles and settlement building. The story is great and the creation of a rebellion is a cool interest investment. But the more I played the worse it got. - When you turn off the music it is 100% silence. No footsteps, wind, chatting villagers or birds chirping about. - Playing with specific…

TL;DR: Not for everyone, or, more specifically, for those wanting something easygoing. The best way I can describe this game is that it has A LOT of things going all at once, but the execution of MANY of them is not good. Also if you are an achievement hunter be prepared to spend like 40h+ ( rough estimate) in the postgame. If you are someone who played lots of old JRPGS you probably won't feel as strongly as me, given you'd be used to having little to no directions and being confused on what…

Honestly, reading these negative reviews makes me feel upset. I feel like half of these critical reviews are missing the point. This game is the most faithful interpretation of what playing old JRPG's, especially the Suikoden series, could have been. Sure, there are some new QOL aspects to the game, but 100%ing it takes nearly 100 hours in game. Sure you could rush it, but this is even with these QOL additions. If the game feels too easy for you there are difficulty settings and even then if…

Calling in the original Suikoden writer and character artist to make a spiritual successor should've been a guaranteed home run. Fourteen hours in, it becomes clear that pedigree alone doesn't resurrect magic — it just makes the failure more disappointing. This is what happens when talent can't overcome a bloated, incoherent story that mistakes scope for substance. The 100+ characters are the game's original selling point and its fatal flaw. Having that many potential allies sounds like…

There is so much wrong with this game, but the writing takes the cake. You could ask ChatGPT for a better story. Genuinely one of the most unenjoyable games I've had the displeasure of beating. There are so many vague objectives that give you almost no direction, so many annoying dungeons you're forced to backtrack through just to recruit one character, and way too many fights that just aren't fun. Guess I'm a fake RPG fan for daring to like something other than mid-90s Final Fantasy. Ah well, C'est la vie. (Goes back to playing Eiyuden Chronicle and enjoying himself unlike all these fucking toads who haven't played a video game since 1998 but still never shut up about them)

(+) - Yes this is THE spiritual successor to Suikoden - Has all the mechanic on Suikoden games, including the side features such as theater, cook-offs, and bath house, and even more. You can even collect and have Beyblade (Beigoma in this game) duel with NPCs. - Tons of interesting characters you can recruit. (not the sacred number of 108, mind you lol) - The graphic and animation is beautiful - Soundtracks are good. - Deep world building with deep political intrigue - Lots of comedic moments,…

5/10 game. If only Steam has a "neutral" button in the review option. Pros: - Gorgeous, nostalgic 2.5D visuals with beautiful scenery. - Outstanding soundtrack, especially the incredibly epic and heroic theme song "Flags of Brave". Cons: - Boring story, boring characters. - Bad English translation. - A lot of bugs that freeze the game or stall dialogues, forcing you to restart or wait forever (especially late-game and in the Marisa DLC). - Horrible optimization on Steam Deck. - Soul-crushing,…

[DISCLAIMER: THIS IS A DETAILED REVIEW] I am a fan of Suikoden 1 and 2, where I love the story and exploration aspects of the game. Because this game carries the hype of Suikoden, the expectations of Suikoden are also carried over to this game, especially in terms of story and exploration. Here's why: - First, about the characters. The idea of introducing three heroes in the story is quite impressive, and the dramatic effect, especially at the ending, is quite noticeable. However, something…

Feels like a JRPG that stepped right out of the 1990s. THE GOOD (universally agreed upon or popular opinion) -- PRESENTATION: The artwork is gorgeous. The voice acting is great (mostly). The character designs, the world design, the variety in dungeons, and the gimmick system for boss fights-- all of this stuff is done well. Overall, this game is a great representation of the JRPG genre-- even if the story is derivative. THE NEUTRAL (stuff you have to decide if you would enjoy it or not) --…
