What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 181 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (3,229 of 4,441 positive).
Players find Eldest Souls brutally difficult, with many dying repeatedly to bosses. [1][2][3] Some praise its art style, lore, and boss rush design. [4][5][6] Others criticize movement, hitboxes, and unfair difficulty. [7][8][9]

People who compare this to Dark Souls are out of their minds... Great graphic and sound are the only positives here. Don't be fooled, this is a bad boss gauntlet with nothing in between. Quests are usually giving a boring NPC a meaningless item that you found 15 meters away from them, hit boxes are dumb, bosses have over 1000 hp, you usually deal from 8 to 30 per attack, and of course you have like 100 health with …

Absolutely horrible movement at times. Some boss hitboxes are too big so you can't pick up things, see things on the ground behind them or can't dash through them. Fighting the movement in this game was probably the hardest part of the game. There's a reason why good soulslikes are not isometric. And yes, before you say "skill issue", I beat every boss in the game and unlocked new game+. I'd rather play something …

Man… Eldest Souls is one of those games that makes you question your life choices. You know that feeling when you’ve been fighting the same boss for two hours straight, your hands are shaking, your eyes are burning, and every time you die at 2% HP, you just… stare at the screen in silence? Yeah. That’s this game. This isn’t your usual “oh I’ll just grind and get stronger” kind of game nah, this one locks you in an …

I've undoubtedly had a very hard time playing through this game and felt mad and frustrated during nearly my whole playthrough. Despite all of that, I still find this game great and very well made. The cryptic and mysterious story, leaving you room for wonder, is exactly what makes it so enticing, pushing you further to explore the beautifully drawn environment and its characters, even through the pain. As difficult …

Died about 30 times on first enemy. Too difficult for me. Uninstalled. But would recommend if you like a brutal game! Harder than any dark souls gane you will play. Get it on sale for a dollar!

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Path of Exile. It's been great on the Steam Deck and I'm going through the last few days of this league. Once that finishes I'll start putting a lot more time into Street Fighter 6 ([with the compact portable hitbox controller I made](https://lemm.ee/post/2468069)) and some Eldest Souls on the side.

positive · AI labelView post →i wasn't expecting to stumble upon this gem of a game the start feels like narrativly a bit lacking but the art and combat from what i have seen are creme de la creme the combat is new exiting and interesting it's a great game aside from the fact it doesn't have fromsoft level writing which is a high bar that not every game needs to achieve to be great however i have one major problem with this game it is very very aggressive on the eyes the light hurts so bad certain bosses are unplayable…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Spider-Man Remastered - 80% completed the story and left it there. Lost interest. Didn't see any point in exploring most abilities when a hand full of AoE enemy clearing abilities were so effective. Guacamelee 2 I left close to the final boss and still think of it as one of the best games I ever played. Cuphead - had plenty of fun, but lost interest in replaying bosses so many times over and over. Eldest Souls - excellent game, but I took along break from it and when I came back I forgot how…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game, good lore, well designed boss rush. short but no time wasting mechanics a full playthrough and newgame plus playthrough for alternate ending took me 8 hours.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Getting 100% was difficult. Tho a lot of cheese builds exist for the game, my hands hurt from repetitive controller strain. approximate amount of time to 100%: 40+ hours (skill dependent) Estimated achievement difficulty: 9/10 (skill dependent) Minimum number of playthroughs needed: 5+ (likely more without backups but they can be short once mastered) Multiplayer achievements: No. Missable achievements: Yes!!! positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thought I was hot ♥♥♥♥ managing the first boss - instantly humbled on the second one 10/10 will crash out again xD Edit after first run completion - Fun souls like boss rush with nice lore and sides 8.5/10 dish Update after 100% - This is genuinely one of if not the hardest 100% I've done to date. For completionists - it's definitely a grind, especially the no death run. Didn't sour it too much overall but definitely a test of patience over an enjoyable hunt!

positive · AI labelView post →I like the fact it is just a boss rush and you dont have to find hoards. Also there is no way to farm power. You either beat it or you don't. Its a pretty high skill game though.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Eldest souls is an amazing game, one I’ve bought on multiple platforms. I fully recommend, it is a blast playing. I feel like most of the negative reviews it gets are from people having skill issues.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Short Review Eldest Souls has gorgeous boss designs, a great soundtrack, and some of the most impressive fight visuals I’ve seen in a 2D indie soulslike. Unfortunately, the actual gameplay of fighting those bosses feels unfair, with attacks that connect when they shouldn’t, poor telegraphing, and bosses that overstay their welcome. Add in a miserable achievement list and a platforming zone that exists purely to ruin your day, and I can’t recommend this one. It’s a classic case of wasted…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Eldest souls is a fast and demanding top-down action game. The game is very enjoyable once you understand its mechanics, it can seem relatively simple at first, but the difficulty increase dramatically when you start adding the restrictions required for 100% completition. 100% steam achievements Time : 37.9H Completion Difficulty : 8/10 Playthroughs : 4 minimun Missables : None Notable requirements : Complete the game on normal, abyss, no hit for all bosses, no death, no upgrade.

neutral · AI labelView post →The game accurately advertises itself as brutally challenging, but maybe it's a little too brutal. I keep getting stuck between the bosses and a piece of geometry, and then died. Bosses also take a lot of damage to drop, so fights are really long. It's pretty well designed, but I didn't find it fun. Really pretty to look at, good sound design. Too bad the difficulty is stopping me from seeing more of the game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Only for those who really and I mean REALLY like Boss Rush games that are also Brutally and unfairly difficult. I have defeated 5 out of the 9 bosses from the main story so this is more like a first impressions The artwork and music is all great, but the gameplay suffers from trying to copycat the concept of souls-like bosses without understanding what makes FUN souls like bosses. Expect bosses as difficult as Pontiff sullivan as your second boss while you still trying to figure out the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got it for like 1€. Got all achievements. The Bad In my first run I ran a berserk build. The three bosses right after the tutorial boss are way too hard. Especially Eos and Azikel are some of the hardest bosses in the game. You just don't have enough upgrades to deal with them. Bosses have too much health. Movement feels sluggish. Stamina regen often too slow. You can't dash trough bosses. Bosses can just body block you from dodging or sometimes get you stuck in a corner. Your first run just…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you would like dark soul but do not like the farming, exploring or complicate character building, this could be perfect game form you. I have play many soul game in my gamer life. They are very fun and satisfy to play. However, as I move to adulthood of company worker, I do not have much time to investing in exploration (remember all the map and planning the route to sun to boss room), farming (soul for level and weapon), or thinking about character build that much. It make me rarely…

neutral · AI labelView post →(-) Interacting with the environment is frustrating because of the poor visual clarity. It's hard to tell where you can actually walk and where you'll just get stuck on invisible geometry or random objects. (-) Combat feels weird. Either your attacks only go straight ahead, or they automatically lock onto enemies - I honestly couldn't tell. Enemies also seem to have auto-tracking, so they can literally spin 180 degrees in the middle of an attack, making it impossible to dodge. Everything…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I dont normally do soulslike games, but this one had me hooked from the start. Mechanics were clean, the story was awesome and the art style was great! The bosses were largely unforgiving as a person who doesnt play these kinds of games, but the ability to retry quickly and learn attack patterns made it a top tier game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not bad but definitely need to fix boss collision, bosses pushing the player out of bounds, and character input registration. Feels sluggish to play and unrewarding when you win or lose. With how slow the player is and how bullet hell the game is, plus the bugs and terrain being easy to collide with, makes for a rough play. Mechanics are fun otherwise bug a slog to actually enjoy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gorgeous art, atrocious gameplay. It's one of these tough as nails boss rush games, No exploration, no leveling up, just testing power combinations to get a light edge on damage sponge enemies.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really want to like this but the movement and the dodging systems are really bad in this game. The game encourages you to be aggressive with the whole life-steal mechanic and fast paced combat but then lets you dodge only 3 times which makes you taking hits that wouldn't take otherwise. Dodging doesn't let you move past objects or enemies either so half of the times you are stuck in some corner of the map or between the enemies legs and since you can die in 1-2 hits that's enough to make you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Damage-Sponge-Enemies type of game, not fun for me
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I didnt like the gameplay, it felt extremely weight against the player which i understand but still kinda sucks. Also you have me fighting a 2d-3d boss with somewhat questionable hit-boxes and u dont even let me lock on it. Why?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I feel like this game had a lot of potential, but it missed the mark for me. There is a pretty big world to explore with various npcs and lore sprinkled throughout, but I do not see why I should care about any of it. I have played many souls-like games, and I reached the end of this one in only 5 hours. It also feels weird to me that a game where the only combat is bosses features only 9 of them. Perhaps the enjoyment from this game comes from complete mastery, but I do not think I am going to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another game I finished this days was Perennial Order (thanks to @ironpineapple.bsky.social video on souls-likes). A cool boss-rush on the line of Titan Souls and Eldest Souls, always feeling fair and challenging, the terrific art-style and designs adds so much to the ambience.
neutral · AI labelView post →Dark souls but 2D, this game makes you wanna throw your computer out the window but you still keep playing cause if it can bleed then it can die (9/10)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When you make a game clearly ripping off the souls series at least make the controls the same, or let me customize them. The control customization in this game is broken, either I can't use the menu because it has no native ps5 controller support, or I can't change the terrible control scheme, because the game doesn't actually let you customize controller inputs. What a pathetic attempt at a rip-off.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it's definitely a tough game , but the pixel art is amazing. the whole game design from the environment to every boss is brilliant, 9.5/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game might be cheap, but still not worth it. Pay a little more and get a decent souls game instead.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bounced off this. Why show me the AOE after the move finishes and damage is dealt. Instant attacks, if the boss ain't doing anything and can throw an instant attack out then how am I meant to engage as I have to assume that being in range to damage means that I can't commit in a game where I need to charge attacks. Damage sponge too. We ain't all devs of your game. You want it to make it punishing? Fair enough. You want to make it fair? You failed at boss 2.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great boss rush game, with unique combat style. It is sometimes clunky, hitboxes are very generous for enemies, it bugs sometimes, balancing is off (green stance so much worse than other ones), but at the end of the day it is a really nice game. If only I knew to use red or blue stance throught my first playthrough (especially for 3 dlc bosses). Still, worth the time and challenge.

neutral · AI labelView post →There is literally a game called "Eldest Souls" I keep seeing in the PSN library/Steam store and it makes me laugh every time because it is YASL (Yet Another Souls Like) that has only surface level similarities to what they're ripping off.
negative · AI labelView post →Neat little game. Almost gave a negative review because of one .... really... toxic boss.. the rotten king. Anyway, was fun and stimulating.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's meh... boss has infinite health and doesn't really care about the player's actions at all. The mechanics itself is a downward spiral instead of a positive feedback loop. Also player gets one shot, but not because you've got one health, but because there's always one instakill ability for every boss. Could've been a better game had dodging becomes more awarding.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The learning curve is too steep the whole game is just a boss rush with a 20s walking segment between bosses, it would be fine if it was a separate gamemode after completing a rpg but as it is now its just not fun or rewarding
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →idk how this game evolves but eos is just a horribly designed fight edit: it doesn't evolve. what the ♥♥♥♥ is aryana
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not a souls-like, just a boss rush, it has virtually no exploration for once. The perceived soulslike fatigue stems from mistagging like this .
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Trial and error the game. I liked it at first but it became extremely tedious for me. Ill give it a like for the devs but buyer beware know what your buying before buying.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game, thinkin' about 100%ing it but i'm kinda scared tbh, also could probably run on a potato
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Somehow this little ♥♥♥♥♥ ass pixelated piece of garbage doesn't have borderless option in the video settings. Plus, all these edgy high-school ♥♥♥♥♥ learned to have the pause menu be completely useless since it doesn't pause the game from the souls games.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It saddens me to leave a bad review for such a beloved genre of games, but I was really expecting a better experience. The pause button does not pause on boss fights, like I can understand the reason behind it but it could be nice to be able to pause if something requires attention, the pause menu covers most of the screen anyways. For example the rejected daughter is completely broken, just play a bit and you will see how weird she behaves, and also after a few deaths the fountains no longer…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →all bosses are easy except the rejected daughter which just turns into a test of how long are you willing to sit on a spike for
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't understand how this clunky piece of ♥♥♥♥ has gotten so much praise.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Eldest Souls fails at the one thing that actually makes souls games good, and that's clarity. Wind up attacks for bosses can be really hard to gauge especially when your small character gets locked in to a charged attack animation and you can't dodge until it's too late, but furthermore because the skill tree produces so many particle effects that I can barely see what's going on in the boss fight anyways. With the right build you can face roll on the keyboard and win every fight thanks to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →https://youtu.be/UDmgIm1q9lw Focused on arena boss encounters is a reasonable formula but without dodge interrupts combat often feels unresponsive as inputs are dropped during animations.
