Critics, per Wikipedia
Expeditions: Viking received "mixed or average" reviews according to review aggregator Metacritic. Daniel Starkey of GameSpot summarized: "Viking lives in its atmosphere, so it's appreciated that most of the game is a spirited romp. For now, that experience is mangled by dozens of technical hiccups and anachronisms." Charalampos Papadimitriou of RPGamer said that "Viking isn't the most refined game, with limited camera control, repetitive graphics that lack detail, and a lack of high-production presentation. It nevertheless succeeds in immersing the player in its world through an intriguing main story focused on local politics and motivations and driven by realistic struggles and…

Watching the waters in anticipation, I saw the shores of Skerjn on the horizon . . . and was interrupted abruptly by a message letting me know that I lost. In spite of my 72 hour investment, spent marching from one crushing victory to the next, I took one day too long to win the game. A needless, nonsensical time limit turned what this 8/10 game into a 4/10. Shame.

I've 556 hours in the game as of this post, it's a huge comfort game for me, and there's so many regions of the game I haven't completed yet. It's absurdly content-rich.

What they didn’t tell me was that I’d form a bond so deep with my warband that I’d cry into my keyboard when one of them died trying to save a settlement I barely cared about until that exact moment. Turns take SECONDS. Same for Harvest by @keymastergames.bsky.social flip 2 tiles, put a cow in those spaces, & boom it's your turn again.

I got this in 2018, didn't beat it, got Rome loved it, then game back to enjoy this and beat it. Now waiting for Samurai release. Like any game like this if it frustrates you, you are not paying enough attention. It can be brutal if you take it causal. Also you can heal everyone for free in 1 hour in your home town, find the old lady bottom right of map.

neutral · AI labelView post →I really hate having to leave a bad review for this game because there are parts that are fun. But on the whole the game has too many things going against it. For starters, the game's progression is extremely simple. You have more or less all the points you need in skills and abilities by the time you finish the 5-10 hr prologue, the extra skill points are just to make your attacks do slightly more damage or to branch out to a backup weapon (which you're limited to because of the heavy…

neutral · AI labelView post →Unfortunately, I can’t really recommend this game. Maybe I’m just spoiled by better RPGs like DOS2, BG3, Pathfinder 1 & 2, but compared to those, this game feels very unfinished. I don’t mind that it’s not fantasy. I actually love Viking settings, especially as a fan of the Vikings series. On paper, this game sounded very promising. In reality, the execution is just… meh. The skill system feels incomplete, almost like something from an alpha or beta version. Partly, the passive skills didn’t…

neutral · AI labelView post →This is my favorite of the Expeditions games, and the one I'd recommend the most. It has the best story and gameplay balance of the 3, and to my opinion, the most interesting historical setting. It felt immersive, engaging and satisfying to play. If you came from Conquistador, this feels much smoother and less janky, and if you come from Rome, it's like a breath of fresh air with no pointless mechanics and boring minigames. In the end, you can't go wrong with Vikings.

neutral · AI labelView post →I very much enjoyed this game, but it is worth noting that it won't be for everyone. It isn't flashy, so if you need fancy graphics or get bored easily then it may not be for you. If you like RPGs that let you immerse yourself in a story and a setting, and especially if you are a fan of the era and history, then this game is definitely for you. From a mechanics standpoint, the game is somewhat unforgiving. There are a few combat abilities that are must haves, and if you don't figure that…

neutral · AI labelView post →I really wanted to like this game as a fan of CRPGs, but it has a lot of design flaws that make it more frustrating than fun to play. Combat in particular has balance issues like the enemy groups having unlimited healing potential while players are limited to a finite number of charges for the ability. Surprise rounds are equally frustrating. You may move your party to an occupied camp site, but it's the campers who get the surprise round on you, not the other way around. I'm sure there are…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was pleasantly surprised by this game. The strong storyline really drew me in, and had me role playing as the son of a dead thegn trying to restore his father's territory to greatness. That sounds trite, but, not all game stories are compelling. Some are just a bland pretext to play the mechanics of the game. In this case, the game is the pretext to tell the story, I appreciate that. Sure, there were a few warts, such as clunky UI components, trying to find the right pixel to loot…

The article's a week old, but as I'm still new-ish to the ARC scene, what I've gathered so far is these expeditions are a tool for those who long for the experience of a "wipe" without forcing wipes on the entire playerbase, which seems logical to me. I'm curious - what do other raiders think of these expeditions? Excerpt from the article: >The fourth Expedition is almost here, and it’s bringing some exciting changes. Pros: - Music was great. - Banter was good between characters - Morale system was easy enough to understand and so was leveling, traveling, etc., across the maps. - The system itself/recycling/repairing gear, tinkering, etc., also was very easy to do and easy to understand Cons: - The UI was tiny. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game starts out decently well, but has a lot of tediously annoying mechanics that make it unfun, such as the camping mechanics, very finite resources (as if the time constraint of finishing the game wasn't enough). It is a half good foundation if they would work to improve it, but that will never happen, this game is in its current finished state.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played Expeditions: Conquistador some time ago, so I kind of expected this game to be more or less like that one but with Vikings, and it kind of is. But it's also a much better game that improved upon almost every aspect in the original. The systems feel familiar and they resemble the systems in Conquistador, but they're tweaked to be simpler to use while having somewhat more variety and/or depth. The camp mechanic, combat, companion loyalty based on choices, and traveling the overworld are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a pretty good game for fans of RPG's and turn based strategy. There are a few flaws with the combat system that make the early going very difficult (enemy archers shoot through cover with ease, many abilities don't work as advertised). It does a good job capturing Viking flavor. I give it a B-, so I recommend buying it on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Exercise in frustration. You can only heal injury in just 1 location and camping; no healer in large town. Think about that logic. Also, you can not eat in towns, you have to camp to eat. Think about that logic. Rotation control bugged to death, you want to rotate the camera to right? Nope, it will rotate to the left. Try to change the control for rotation, nope, it refuse to change due to bug. This game is so frustrating that i actively encourage you to 'try' (*wink wink) it instead of buying.…
