Many players say the vanilla game is a poor VR port, but mods can transform it. [1][2][3] Some reviewers warn that modding requires significant effort and a Nexus subscription. [4][2][5]

Fallout 4 VR is basically Fallout 4 wearing a VR headset it found in the wasteland. Is it fancy. No. Is it polished. Also no. Does it still eat your entire weekend. Absolutely yes. This is the full Fallout experience. Bugs included. You boot it up, step out of the vault, look around in VR and immediately think. Oh no. I live here now. The graphics are old-school Bethesda. The controls feel like they were designed …

I'm going to be extremely honest: if you aren't willing to do hours of modding, dragging DLC files from the flat-screen version after downpatching, etc., this game isn't for you. This game on its own is probably the worst VR port to ever exist on the planet and is so unbelievably bare-bones it's almost laughable—you are literally just a floating Pip-Boy and gun. With the right modlist, however, it can become one of …

My thoughts on Fallout 4 VR are complex. On one hand this product as is, is unnaceptable and the fact that it was even released and you're expected to pay money for it and then also be happy is some sort of sick social experiment from Bethesda. On the other hand.. After a complete modding overhaul (Gingas's VR Modpack is your saviour) this turns it into possibly my favourite VR game ever? If you love Fallout as much …

DO NOT BUY THIS UNLESS YOU ARE PLANNING ON HEAVLY MODDING IT. This game for all reasons is a Bethesda cash grab of the game. This game is a vanilla, DLCless, and version 1.0 fallout that doesnt get supported by Bethesda. Playing this game shows how incompetent Bethesda can be, but the amount of fantastic mods made to fix all the issues with VR fallout shows how dedicated and passionate fallout fans are. If you want …

TL;DR The game is unplayable WITHOUT and WITH mods (not playable at all). Do I recommend the game? - no. Did I play it for almost 200 hours? - yes. Why? - because I wanted to revisit locations of the game in VR and for god knows what reason I wanted to do 100% of the achievements for this game (which I didn't accomplish and will not try to do again because I'm sick of this game). Setup So, imagine you just bought a …

The mods themselves are amazing and basically fixes everything wrong with vanilla. But I mean hey that's bethesda games for you right lol
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Why do VR Makers not support those who cannot stand in real life. I was unable to enjoy this because I am in a Wheelchair and the sitting option is not implemented in game. Otherwise not so bad. Also the hottie is still out of control with floating, Michael is disembodied floating around while I am do things. Also the bonds stuff doe not work. Recommend wait till they fix these items or respond with how to work woth them.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →instead of dishing out full price for this game, buy off a discount site for like 5 bucks, and then use the money you would've bought this game to get a premium account on the nexus, and then install GingaVR's Essentials through Wabbajack. Honestly the best way to play fallout 4 with that mod list. Also, for those worried about being able to play this while sitting down, there are 3 options in the base game that helps with this. Realistic Sneak which toggles the sneak function, setting your…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Exercise caution... Short version: If you don't want to mod it, don't buy it. If you're here for an honest review read this before you make the purchase. Full transparency, I hated this VR experience. If you don't planning on modding it I would save your money and just buy the standard edition with the DLC. Just to be clear this is JUST the VR version with NO DLC expansions, it wasn't the base game AND VR support. I bought this game with the recent hype of the Fallout TV series and decided…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got the game on sale. Vanilla is pretty ass because you don’t have a body, but when you download mods to add a body and improve vanilla, you really get an amazing experience. but I do recommend waiting for it to be on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do yourself a favor and download Wabbajack, then install the Mad God Overhaul for this game. It elevates this game from fairly disappointing to an incredible experience.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It would've been incredible if they would've gotten someone to implement VR features like holsters, proper controls, actual gun reloading, etc. Instead, they ported it and sell it for $50 knowing that you will mod the game to lessen the jank. It's just so disappointing to see so much potential squandered. Bethesda is one of the largest game developers in the world, you'd think they'd want to make something incredible. The game has been out for almost 5 years and they've done nothing to…

I haven't played since FONV and now having a Frame, i wanted to try out some of the fun VR games out there... Well what would you have know that Bethesda left a critical bug in since launching nearly 10 years ago. and now i can't get out of the tutorial because the keyboard won't pop up, nor can i used my physical keyboard. So the solutions i found are either to mod…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is Fallout 4 (without DLCs) you can play in VR. That doesn't make it a worthwhile VR game. The main issue - there are VR visuals, but not VR interactions. The game still relies on regular menus and UI elements for everything. You can't just drop or "grab" weapons with hands - have to do it through pressing "pick up" UI button. You can't reload weapons by hand. You can't manually "put" something into your backpack or to "retrieve" something from it. A VR game is something like Alyx. Or…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DONT BUY ON STEAM!!! WAY too expensive, doesnt include dlc, sure its playable in vanilla but its a skeleton of a vr game. if you couldnt get mods to work on a "free" version of F4VR like me it will probably work if you get the steam version. HOWEVER just find a cheap key to buy and use it in steam. got F4VR for like 10 euro this way. i reccomend using "Gingas fallout vr overhaul" to completely overhaul the game with better graphics, player body w arms and hands etc
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Only worthwhile if you have a Nexus Mods subscription because Bethesda relies on free labor to fix their broken games.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well done they took the game from half playable without mods to needing mods to be half playable The game starts to break down the second you start the game with the videos not even going where you are looking The cyro pod seems to just pick a random direction to spawn at when you get in it never being the one you are looking at Can skip most of the game by just walking though walls and grabbing stuff though anything because you are a being the does not care about matter I guess The pipboy…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Simply awful. $60, does not include any of the DLC, and is plagued with performance problems. Maybe you could make it playable with mods, but you shouldn't have to mod it to make it playable anyway. The bare minimum that Bethesda should be able to do is sell you a functional game for $60.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Without mods, absolutely terrible, almost unplayable. The DLCs aren't included either. You have to take the time to figure out how to downgrade the Fallout 4 DLCs from the current version so you can add them to the VR version. Then install a few mods. I think an upscaler mod is one of the most important, because without DLAA everything looks way too pixelated for me. Long Loading Times Fix is a must on my setup. You should also definitely get FRIK, so you can see your own body and hands. With…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's just Fallout 4 in VR. But it has been so poorly ported that not even the modding community can save it. I love Skyrim VR because of the modding community. I've put more hours into Skyrim VR than any other VR game; I loved it. But Fallout 4 is so bad that even the modding community can't save it. Todd didn't even bother to give you a fake hand. You literally just see the controller in VR. This is the biggest middle finger to a fanbase I've ever seen. Stick to Skyrim VR or to normal Fallout…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →massive fallout fan\nerd here. saw the bad reviews and thought man people are just picky it couldn't possibly be that bad. i was wrong, this isnt even a playable game. the fact that this is even being sold should be against some sort of consumer law. if you buy this you would save time by just putting the money directly into the toilet and flushing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Despite what Todd might have you believe, this thing doesn't Just Works :tm:, and haven't been touched with any patches for half a decade to even attempt to remedy any of the deep lying problems.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i dont get why people hate this vr port THAT much, dont get me wrong, it could be WAY better with mods, but that comes with downsides. 1: you NEED a beefy PC. non-modded fallout 4 VR runs PERFECTLY fine with the recommended specs. (i would know, i thugged it out with a 1080 and i5 before i upgraded to a 4060 and an i7.) the modded version (at least the gingasvr version (no hate to her the modpack looks beautiful)) the modpack would need a graphics card of at LEAST a 3060 and a later gen i7.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →its really bad unless your modding if you not modding then dont get ALSO why is it 60 dollars when the orignal is 20
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I started this game out and after reading all the reviews it sounds like you need a ton of mods. I installed them. Game was a hot mess and crashed all the time. I deleted all the mods and the game runs fine.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The last time this version of the game was updated was before the pandemic and they seem to have no plans on continuing to better the VR performance and controls / bringing it up to par with the fixes applied to the flatscreen version / or even put it on sale. Just look somewhere else for your fix.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unless your willing to Mod the game it is an absolute joke of an experience, horrible one controller aiming for every weapon, zero visuals of hands you see the VR controllers floating or a floating pip boy and weapon, there is no HMD by default you have to edit the config files of the game. I didnt expect a super amazinf port for a fallout VR title but compaire to skyrim VR which I would consider playable without Mods this game feels half baked as a VR port, I'd argue to say the port is so bad…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its a lazy port of the flatscreen version to VR. Feels like something I would play on the Google carboard. If you really want to play this, its essential that you use mods just to get the game to run properly. the mods also have quality of life features like full body avatars instead of 2 floating controllers in your game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →you want an unfinished vr port of an unfinished game and no dlc? get this, spend an insane amount of time fixing and troubleshooting with mods, or pay for nexus premium to cut most of that time out. why is this still $60? why was this not a free update? or paid dlc? to get around a potential lawsuit regarding how the season pass was sold? all I know is its really fun after doing Bethesda's job for them. Bethesda abandoned support for Fallout 4 vr a while ago, you have to mod it to fix every…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →about 5 hours of modding, config and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around and the game is *playable*... the gun sights dont really line up and vats is totally broken at any range past about 10m... the only range you need to use vats after everything im left with a pretty bad game... yet I still cant shake the feeling that Ill sink 50+ hours into it do I reccomend it? if you are happy doing hours of modding to get it in a somewhat playable state, then sure, but without that time investment it is an F tier game and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have played this game with the Rift, the VIVE, the Cosmos, the Index, the Quests 1, 2 and 3 and PSVR2. It worked great with all of those. I did not use any mods. I finished the game. Besides a bit of bethesda jank and weird control schemes I had no major issues. When I did attempt mods, FRIK caused my game to crash, so I went back to vanilla. This game can be played through and through without any mods. I have about 25 hours of video evidence, just browse my let's play.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is legit not playable on the valve index at all, even mods wont save this game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bethesda is a garbage company today. I sincerely would recommend not buying this game, or at a minimum, grabbing a key from a resaler or.. other more heinous means. Seriously. Do not pay $60 for the worst port of a game in history. They very nearly changed NOTHING to make this VR port. It is missing functionality STILL after so many years and it will never be improved. You will have to mod it heavily to play, so may as well put in extra time to save $40-60 bucks.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm going to be extremely honest: if you aren't willing to do hours of modding, dragging DLC files from the flat-screen version after downpatching, etc., this game isn't for you. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Only Buy if you plan on modding it to work properly (Easy (I'm a newbie), and takes 10 minutes). Runs great once you do and wandering the wasteland will give you some goosebumps. Would still recommend.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →mods cant even fix this cause you keep updating your game, Todd. stop it, nobody cares anymore
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do not buy this game if you have index controllers. It is unplayable and no amount of moding will fix it
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →without mods: another disappointing instance of Bethesda not thoroughly testing their software and expecting modders to fix the work for them. VR is the future, they didn't put enough effort into this port. With mods? : My favorite game of all time.... I can't stop playing it. Learn how to use Wabbajack, get a nexus premium account, and install Fallout 4 VR essentials by Gingas VR....it is worth the effort trust me. People complain about their not being enough new vr games, they're probably…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i actually have to say, yes, you do need mods to make it truly playable, but MAN once you do, its SOOOOO fun. i mean, its a giant, sprawling bethesda RPG in VR. install virtual holsters, the newest manual reloads mod, FRIK, and maybe some QoL fixes and it will consume you. especially recommended for those like me who have never played much of the original flat release.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →spent forever setting it up because it didnt launch when i downloaded it i had to look for a solution and even after i did that i found out it is just a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ vr port only worth it if you want to spend hours modding it
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Whatever you expect from the VR port of this game, Lower your standards. This is one of the worst things Bethesda could have done to such an amazing title. You need a Sh*tload of mods for it to be *Playable* to a point that warrants the $90 pricetag. It's painful to see this among the other gems like Fallout NV and 4. If you want this flaming pile of dog sh*t called a game, wait for a large discount during sales. This is not worth it at full price.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DO NOT BUY! bough this game on sale long time ago , devs refuse to do any updates to the game and it runs like azz
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would only recommend this game if it cost 2 cents. Bethesda needs to be publicly shamed for offering up such a putrid attempt at VR and then asking 60 bucks. This game is not truly VR. It took MODers years to add in what is missing. So unless this game is on sale, which a few cents would be reasonable, avoid this LAZY POS cash grab. And even at that price, you will absolutely have to MOD it to even make it playable. I paid about 10 bucks, which is about 500x too much.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Literally has to be modded to be any worth playing.... The out of box experience Bethesda left us with is pathetic & greedy they didnt even do the bare minimum ,If you are interested in what mods i used, Just ask, best one is FRIK, but there are other mods to improve the game into something that somewhat resembles a playable VR experience.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Worked "out of the box" for me. Used to play on my Rift, now play on Quest 2. I notice mostly only occasional audio bugs but that's it. I have 0 mods installed. The scene when the Prydwen enters the map was amazing. Wouldn't suggest paying full price though, if for no other reason than the age of the game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tried running this game modded, crashed. Tried running it with only F4SEVR, VR Address Library, and FRIK, crashed. Tried running it vanilla, CRASHED. The game is an embarrassment.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The worst VR game I have ever played. controls not working, crashing every 30 seconds. Even if it worked the price is ridicolous for a half-done, lazy port of the original.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →virtually unplayable unless you go through the stressful effort of modding and troubleshooting it to work. Insane how horrible bethesda cares about its games nowadays.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're okay with modding the game to hell and back, it's a fantastic VR game, If you're not, This game is nothing short of a mediocre cash grab, Todd said "How can't we do minimal work and make a quick" and they decides that floppy floating one handed miniguns and an autistically suspended pipboy was enough. This game is a spit in the face to Fallout fans and VR fans (Mostly VR fans) BUT!...... BUUUUUUUTTT!!!!!.... IF you go on the Nexus and get FRIK and Virtual Holsters, This game is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its great, BUT the reason i rate it bad is because it REQUIRES mods to be fun. REQUIRES. i feel like bethesda should focus on their broken games more instead of releasing half baked rip offs. i love it modded but it really shouldnt be a game that costs $80, hell i dont even think it should cost anything. Bone stock, no mods, this game sucks. Just period it sucks. holding weapons feels awkward, you dont even have a body so what the hell is the point of the customization, and holding items…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is pure robbery. selling this game is the equivalent of taking your money and giving you the finger at the same time. Very poorly optimised and unplayable. you'll need tons of mods to play it and even so, controls are pure garbage and also you'll need the complete edition of the original FO4 with all DLC's to be able to mod it. TRASH and an insult to VR gamers.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →it's far from a modern vr game so it's very basic and not very immersive. there is a way to apply your paid dlc's from fallout 4 to this game but it involves messing with the core files of both games. don't know why bugthesda didn't just let you port your dlc's across.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No DLC included without manual install after over 5 years and limited and janky movement controls on top of it makes this game not worth the price, even discounted like it was when I bought it. Maybe if it was 5 to 10 bucks, but otherwise no.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game is only worth it if you're going to mod it all my homies hate current bethesda, but we eat the slop regardless
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →IF you play modded, one of the best but mildly buggy but awesome expereince, mod makes the game feel the same way it did in 8 years ago when i first played, its just awesome, All you need is the FRIK mod and thats all and its a 10/10 game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →don't bother playing until you have the FRIK mod, and make sure you have moved your dlc files through a video, so you can play all the dlc, without it the game sucks but with those 10/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game isn't great. Fallout 4 is a high quality game, but it doesn't work as well in the VR format. Your character does not have hands or a body, which breaks the immersion a ton. Although this is easily fixed by installing a few mods, It still feels like it should be in the base game. I actually enjoy this game a bunch, but that is because of said mods, and that i'm already a huge fan of fallout. If you want to explore fallout, then you should consider buying Fallout 4 instead of this, as…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Is this wonky mess worth it? Not really... A poorly deployed attempt at just cramming a game into VR, which is a shame because if this was done right it would be an amazing title. For starters, my height is ridiculously low. I am maybe 4ft tall...I have tried several fixes and none work, I still feel like the world is MASSIVE and I am just a 9 year old running around in it. Controls are AWFUL and not thought out for a VR title at all. The pip boy menus are just not VR compatible and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Literally shattered my dreams of playing a VR Fallout game, I am immensely disappointed and left bitter. The worst part is that I've spent way too much time to try and get this to work, so much time researching online and fighting my instinct to just give up. The game wouldn't even start, and that was even after so much time of researching and failing to find any way to get this to work. Whoever greenlit this to be sold as a finished product needs to look themselves in the mirror and ask…
