What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 183 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (239 of 255 positive).
Players find the game nostalgic and charming, especially for those who played it as children. [1][2][3] Some reviewers criticize the game as boring and mundane compared to other Humongous titles. [4][5] Many posts are humorous or exaggerated, praising the game in a joking manner. [6][7][8]

About half of this game is making a cake and almost all of the ingredients are just in kitchen cabinets or the fridge. Games should take you on an adventure. Putt Putt goes to the moon, joins the circus, and saves the zoo. This game is just really mundane compared to other Humongous games and the small cast of insufferably polite characters is the worst. Stick to the other Humongous games that have at least a little …

A nice game for children, but it made me laugh a bit at its silliness. It makes us remember how nice it is to have the purity of a child. Recommended, and it would be nice to see this game dubbed into other languages, so more children could enjoy it!

One of my favorite games from my childhood! Very short and easy, but a delight for when you're stoned at home and want a nostalgia trip.

This game was my childhood :') I've been waiting so long for it to make a come back!! :D Humongous Entertainment was the bomb! <3

This game made me realize that locking a dog in a box for hours is ok, That leaving a unattended lit candle display on a cake in a kids bedroom is fine, That if decorations appear in your room overnight when everyone is asleep nothing is wrong, And how much of a ♥♥♥♥ that dog is. 10/10
Summarised from 34 of the 220 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 13, 2026. How summaries are made
92% of the 183 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise. The complaint that keeps coming up: very short and easy, lacking depth. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Electronic Gaming Monthly gave the 3DO version a 7.2 out of 10, saying that it is similar to the Putt-Putt games, but that, given the choice between the two games, gamers should get one of the Putt-Putt games instead. Computer Gaming World approved of the "delightful" PC version's interactivity and lack of need to complete the game, describing it as "a wonderful introduction to the computer for beginning users and a delightful game for more experienced youngsters".

Some kids' games lose their charms as you get older. This isn't one of them. Somehow, despite its simplicity, the game is still fun (and nostalgic). But then again, I'd say that for most of Humonguous' games. I fully intend on sharing them with my own kids one day, but y'know, also playing them when my kids are asleep. Yep. Fatty Bear rocks.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →4.7.2020. Game #138 So, about a year ago, there was this humble bundle that had about 20 of these old nineties kid friendly point-and-click games. I figured that my daughter might enjoy these one day so I snagged the entire bundle. I guess I’ll have to wait and see if she will like then when she grows up a little bit more so until then, consider this a “Parent’s review”. In the early nineties, there was a slew of kiddie point-and-click adventure games Holy cow, this game is almost…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Playing this 31-year-old kids' game, I am reminded that, not only does the soundtrack bang, but also, I now believe that Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise is behind a nightmare I had when I was 4 or 5 years old, which I still remember because it scared the ♥♥♥♥ out of me. In the dream - like in Fatty Bear - an anthropomorphic bear character was walking around a house, but unlike Fatty Bear, this dream-bear tripped and his ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ foot came off, which, of course, was terrifying to me at 4/5 years…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My life has been changed. Have you ever read a book? Because I haven't until Fatty Bear, may I call you Sir Bear, changed my life. I have since moved on to more primitive literature like Shakespeare and The Bible, both of which I believe drew inspiration for Sir Bear and his perils. I really enjoyed the part where Fatty Bear tackled with his inner demons to overcome his dark thoughts, and expressed these thoughts in the form of a cake. Thank you fatty bear, you shall be written into my eulogy…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fatty Bear was one of the more obscure characters from the Humongous Game catalog. He never received any sequals excluding one spin-off game made afterwards. The game focuses on a toy bear named Fatty who is a cross between Winnie the Pooh and Teddy Ruxpin voiced by Scott Burns(Bowser from the Mario Bros. games) who prepares a birthday surprise for his owner Kayla along with the help of other toys to set up decorations and a cake. The game isn't as exciting as the other Humongous Games, but it…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is honestly pretty boring for a Humungus Entertainment game. I mean, You're a bear, who prepares a cake for a kid's birthday around a house. That's really it, it just takes place in a house, and now a very interesting house at that. The greatest thing about this game is that you can design the cake with letters so you can write a bad word or something hell I did the same thing. It was originally released in 1993 as part of Humongous Entertainment’s “Junior Adventure” line, using the same SCUMM engine technology that powered many of LucasArts’ classic adventures. What makes Fatty Bear’s Birthday Surprise memorable…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The nostalgia is real. I was gifted then entire bundle of all the Humongous games and replaying them has been amazing. Even after all this time they still hold up. It'd be neat to get remastered versions of any of them. If you have kids, it's totally worth every penny to get these for them. They'll love every one. (I'll be leaving the same review for all of these, as there's not much else to say.)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I know i probably sound ridiculous but this game is amazing purely for the fact that this is a passion project and has lots of good elements, of course im not heavily interested in young childrens games but you can pretty much interact with everything and i like to mess around in it.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loved this game as a kid. Still love it as an adult. Of course, it's aged, but the nostalgia and the simplicity of it keeps it alive in my memory of childhood favorite games. I've actually wanted to replay this for years(I still have the old computer that I used to play it on, but I have long lost the disk to it, so I was very excited to see it on Steam) and I finally got the chance tonight.
