What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 255 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (4,677 of 5,080 positive).
Players widely praise the game's story, characters, and music as exceptional. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the Pixel Remaster lacks extra content from previous versions. [4][5][6]

I would consider the 90% review rating for this as a testament to the game itself and not the quality of this "remaster". The game is epic, iconic, best-in-class, the definition of nostalgia, whatever you want to call it. However, in classic Square Enix fashion, the laziness seeps through the pores of this modern release. They took the original sprites, butchered the view by cropping the top and bottom of the screen …

classic for a reason. the cream of the 2D pixel era crop. a story about a clown ruining everything. too real

Final Fantasy VI is widely considered one of the best RPGs ever made, and it’s easy to see why. It takes everything the series had built up and delivers one of the most complete experiences in the franchise. The story is a major highlight. It’s darker, more emotional, and features a large cast of characters who all have their own moments to shine. The villain, Kefka, is especially memorable and stands out as one of …

I'm gonna start with the obvious, this game is a masterpiece. The characters, story and music are exceptional and easily some of the best I've seen from this series. Terra, Celes and Locke stand out especially as amazing characters and easily three of my favourite Final Fantasy characters now. Kefka is one of the best villains I've ever seen, I can't go into detail because of spoilers but he is incredible. Espers …

While the entire Pixel Remaster series is impressive, FFVI stands as the undisputed masterpiece of the era. What sets it apart is its emotional depth. Instead of a single hero, you experience a grand, operatic tale through an ensemble cast, each grappling with loss, identity, and hope. Then there is Kefka—a villain whose pure, chaotic malice makes him one of the most memorable antagonists in gaming history. The …

positive · AI labelView post →“Thief? Call me treasure hunter…” Final Fantasy VI is such an incredible game that I can't help but celebrate it as it rolled out to Super Fami in Japan 32 years ago today. A game woven together with ZSNES nostalgia for me as that's where I first played it. The walk to Narshe, the opera scene…
positive · AI labelView post →I had to think about this for a while, and I sincerely think my answer is Final Fantasy VI. This game was my life in the mid-to-late 90s and engrossed me more than anything I've played at that point. I've been playing games as far back as 1992 (as far as I can remember), but this one changed me.
positive · AI labelView post →So, my video game hill to die on is that Final Fantasy VI is much better than Final Fantasy VII. At first it looks like a typical "fight the evil empire" plot but the twist is that the real villain is a giggling dolt who causes an apocalypse by jamming a bunch of buttons for kicks.
positive · AI labelView post →Hironobu Sakaguchi hopes his next and final game will be a successor to Final Fantasy VI. "Our goal is to create something old but new at the same time" It's a lofty goal but if anyone can pull it off, he can. www.theverge.com/2025/1/24/24...

positive · AI labelView post →Game Completed: Final Fantasy VI This is the BEST Final Fantasy imo. I love these characters. Each one has a story worth seeing, they’re tragic, but the reward for seeing them get through it is so worth it. I got goosebumps at the end! 10/10 music, gameplay, and art style as well. What a game!
positive · AI labelView post →Happy 32nd Birthday to my favorite game, Final Fantasy VI, released for Super Famicom in Japan on April 2, 1994! 🥳 Final Fantasy II, III, and V were not released in the U.S. at the time, so Final Fantasy VI was released as Final Fantasy III for SNES on October 11, 1994. 1/

neutral · AI labelView post →If I make a “Can You Pet the Dog?” -style account but instead it’s “Can You Suplex the Train?” And Final Fantasy VI is the only one chronicled as yes, would it goad more video game devs into letting us suplex more trains?
neutral · AI labelView post →I keep seeing YouTubers, composers & musicians, reacting to Dancing Mad from Final Fantasy VI, & it's neat to hear them think of it musically, but because they've never played the game & never heard the soundtrack, they completely miss the parts where it references other music from the game.

neutral · AI labelView post →I will be up front with this right off the bat - Final Fantasy VI is my favorite entry in the whole series. Everything from the characters, battles, setting, and especially the music continue to resonate with me to this day. It isn't an exaggeration to say that this game has a special place in my heart. In fact, it was the first Final Fantasy game I played to completion when I was young. As such, this game has essentially become a baseline by which I compare other games, specifically RPGs/JRPGs…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game absolutely blew my mind for how good the story was by today's standards given its age. And then I got to the second half. Then it truly became a masterpiece.

neutral · AI labelView post →Developer challenge: I dare you to make a game as deep and entertaining as Final Fantasy VI that only takes up 2MB of space!!!
neutral · AI labelView post →Game 28 - Final Fantasy VI Utterly spectacular! From the story, the cast to the core gameplay. Kefka is up there as one of the greatest villains in the series. I truly hated him, but damn did he do it exceptionally well! Well worth the 25-year wait! Glad to have experienced it now than not at all 👏🏻
positive · AI labelView post →I don't have the luxury of nostalgia for classic Final Fantasy, and have not played JRPGs until very recently, and this game still slaps incredibly hard. The music, story, gameplay, characters, all of it bangs. The newly arranged soundtrack by itself is incredible. Go in blind and don't use a guide. This game really is worth playing fresh.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very good version of the game, if not probably my favorite way to play this now next to the SNES. With a few mods, like changing the fonts and worldmap tilesets to the previous SNES styles, it's pretty much definitive for me. The new translation is pretty good. You can have the original soundtrack. The sprites look fantastic. It's Final Fantasy VI.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The first World of Ruin sequence in Final Fantasy VI, the one with Celes and Cid, inspired what is today known as the “cozy game movement”.
neutral · AI labelView post →This game is about to get even more broken than before 😂 See you in Final Fantasy VI, Gogo! #FinalFantasyV #CawfeeFantasy
neutral · AI labelView post →FINAL FANTASY VI The pinnacle of the 2D games and always in the discussion for best FF game, VI takes the foundation IV created for a greater emphasis on story and characters cranks it up to 11. Join the Returners as they oppose the Gestahlian Empire, perform in an opera, and suplex a train!
neutral · AI labelView post →In the FF6 Pixel Remaster, there’s no Dragon’s Den, no Gigantuar, and after defeating Kefka, that’s it—no extra story content. Kind of disappointing

positive · AI labelView post →This game is my first venture into Final Fantasy and it's maddening that I've missed out on something so incredible (It made me even break my silence as this being my first ever review!). To see that even tiny, 16-bit pixels could carry such powerful emotions is a testament to the talent of Hironobu Sakaguchi, along with his team. I did experience a bit of friction with some of the games systems as I have rather mixed feelings about random encounters and some grinding, but the remaster does…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was my first time playing through FF6 and it was a great time. However, I'd be lying if I said the "No Encounters" button didn't have a lot to do with that. If you're looking for a jumping-in point for the FF series, this and VII are probably your best bets. This remaster has a lot of nice features to mitigate time spent grinding (or make the game harder, if that's your thing). It's a classic RPG. You get all your cool party members, take turns in battle with your foes, learn everyone's…

positive · AI labelView post →Like the other PRs, this is arguably the best way to play the games now but isn't perfect because if it were, they wouldn't have an excuse to re-release them several years from now. + 2.5D opera house with voiced singing tracks. I wasn't keen on Celes' singer though, either because I thought of her being different or it's weird to hear opera in your own language, which I've heard people attest from trying to sit through Purcell. + Deathgaze now visible on the map although not the minimap…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As with the rest of the Pixel Remasters FFs they removed the extra content. But in this one they changed names on many enemies and items and left some bugs in the game. E.G. essential bestiary entries not spawning or registering if you can kill them too quickly or not being able to target and revive Gau if he dies in battle, with keyboard or mouse. Now I have to play through again because I was too strong and killed a boss too quickly for it to spawn one of it's parts and missing that one entry…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quite disappointing that it does not have the extra dungeons like in the GBA. For that I will give it a 3/5
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Final Fantasy VI is Square pushing the Super Nintendo era to it's fullest. This game would be considered huge by today's standard, let alone 30 years ago. This is easily a 50+ game if you wish to be ready to take down Kefka in the end. For a game with no voice acting, its simply amazing how much personality Square was able to put into this huge roster of characters. *All reviews written after credits roll if applicable
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I always struggle to imagine how graphics and music of these games must've been top notch back then. My first videogame was over two decades after Final Fantasy VI released, and technical advances over the last decade haven't been that crazy.
neutral · AI labelView post →There's a reason many consider this the best Final Fantasy ever made. I'm not sure I'd go that far myself, but it's hard to argue against it being the undisputed peak of the 16-bit JRPG era. What pulled me in is the epic scope. The stakes are enormous and ever-growing, the narrative sprawling and ambitious, and the huge cast of *fourteen* characters lets each one earn their place both mechanically and narratively. That's a huge achievement for any game, let alone one from this era.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the pinnacle of turn-based RPGs. With an intriguing plot, character arcs, customization, and a sprinkling of non-fighting challenges (like performing in an opera), it's amazing how much is packed into one game. I played this decades ago on SNES and wanted to come back to relive the magic. The only negative is that it's hard to stop playing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was pretty solid, but having to level up an entire football team of characters did make the later part of the game repeditive. Glad FFVII had XP share for characters not in the main party
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Recently I heard a reviewer say that modern FF is now less of a FF game than Square's other franchises (Octopath, DQ, etc.). Playing FF6 again is a reassuring reminder that yes, 6 really was THAT good. Modern turn-based games still struggle to pull off the charm, pacing, and systems progression that FF6 provides.
