Several reviewers criticize the remaster for minimal improvements, with unchanged backgrounds and cutscenes. [1][2][3] The addition of a 3x speed boost is widely praised as a helpful quality-of-life feature. [4][5][6]

FFVIII has a lot of jank and is very divisive, but this review is about the "remastered" version specifically. It should be a crime to call this remastered while the background textures are completely unchanged. The entire game will be marred by horrifically blurry and ugly backgrounds that clash terribly with the updated character models walking over them. There is a collection of mods that attempt to upscale the …

This was my first final fantasy game that I played and after all these years I still consider it one of the best JRPGs ever made.

I love this game, but I have to be completely honest: there’s very little that feels truly “remastered” here. The environments are the original ones, the cutscenes are the original ones, the music as well. The only real improvements are the character models and a few pieces of artwork. I’m sorry, but I expected much more. It’s 2026 — updating the textures or remaking the videos in HD wouldn’t have required that much …

Is the story confusing? No. Are junctions confusing? Maybe. Is Triple Triad completely overpowered and way too fun? Absolutely. This, next to FFT is my favourite FF of all time. Despite its age, I still find new perspectives everytime I revisit the game - and I have finished this almost 20x now! The soundtrack is Nobuo in his prime, the summon animations are all ridiculous and the story and Final Fantasiness is …

Take the Remastered subtitle with a grain of salt. The additions are fairly minimal. The 3D models have been reworked and some Quality of Life features were added (3x speed, the ability to turn off random encounters, and a Battle Assist mode that makes combat trivial). While the new character models look great, they clash heavily with the pre-rendered backgrounds, which haven't been touched since the original …

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have had a long history with this game, having played it for many years on Playstation when it first released, then moving over to PC with its initial steam release and then the remastered version here. Final Fantasy 8 is often described as "the black sheep" of the series, either critically lauded for it's open ended junction system, or hated for it. There really isn't an in-between with final fantasy fans. they either love it passionately, or eye roll with dread every time it's mentioned.…

neutral · AI labelView post →One of the most worthless remasters of all time I just want to start off by saying that I think Final Fantasy 8 is a decent game despite its many flaws holding it back. However, this will not be a review of the game itself - if that's what you're looking for, I already did so in my review of the 2013 version which you can read [url=https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561199000740478/recommended/39150/]by clicking here so I will mainly be focusing on the remaster itself and how it compares to…

neutral · AI labelView post →emulated version is better than the remaster. do not buy. find a used ps1 copy instead. many textures have not been updated, and the remaster keeps the original game's 4:3 aspect ratio. character model improvements are nice, but not worth the price tag considering much of the game has not been updated, seemingly, at all.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Im struggling to understand what was remastered. The intro movie has so many compression artifacts that it might as well be ripped from the ps1. Usually you'd at least half ass an AI upscale, but no. None of the animations have been updated. The first scene in the game engine proper has a curtain moving at 3-4 FPS. The game has a launcher to run, because adding a settings menu would have been actual effort I guess. But what sealed the refund for me was none of the above. At least those are…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The last time I played this game was in 1999. I played the remastered under the calculated risk/assumption that revisiting a beloved childhood game as someone now in his late 30s would still be enjoyable given how good the game itself is. And.....this game still is awesome ! Having said that though, thank god for the remaster. You need patience with older games because their pacing is slower, especially the JRPGs of the 90s. Being able to speed up the game by three times was a godsend, or…

I still remeber seeing the intro where Squall fights Seifer on my friends house and was blown away by the graphics and choreography. I was there Gandalf, three billion years ago... positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was itching for an old FF game I haven't played through in a while. Always found myself replaying 4 / 6 / 7 / 9 and even 10 in the past. But never really 8. I was so hard on this game when it came out originally. The magic system I just never was a fan of. It's definitely one of the easiest FF's. But been a fun game to play on the side on my Steam Deck. - The whole plot and time stuff I always loved though. Laguna segments are so cool. - 'Eyes on Me' is still is a great song that brings…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →PROS: - It's still the same story from 1999 and it's a very good one. - Love the fights, the summons, the farming, the min-maxing, the junction system and oh boy, did i farm this time. - The world building is top notch. Very beautiful and intriguing art style. - Nobuo Uematsu is the best, honestly. This Soundtrack is still my favorite of any game i've ever played! I would never settle for a midi version of it. - Triple Triad is very fun, especially after abolishing certain rules in certain…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Final Fantasy VIII gets called the black sheep of the series, but honestly, it’s always been my favorite. There’s something addictive about the way the game lets you break the rules if you really dig into its systems. Keeping your party at low levels while stacking high-tier magic from Triple Triad cards, grabbing Squall’s ultimate weapon early, and turning every fight into a strategic puzzle—it makes the whole run feel unique compared to any other Final Fantasy. It might not play like the…

neutral · AI labelView post →Final Fantasy VIII Remastered Highly Recommend! Loved this entry. Interesting story that took a cool sci-fi twist. Fun party members though I wish they got more development. The game is really about Squall and Rinoa (and I loved them both). The junction system is really fun once you figure it out 🎮
positive · AI labelView post →My favorite Final Fantasy game. The music, GFs, fighting, monsters, junction system...it's so well done. This Remastered version is amazing. While the graphical improvements like the player models are great, the addition I love the most is the 'Game Speed Boost x3'. It's SUCH a great way to maximize what you can accomplish, save time, etc. You can use it at will. I play with an XBox controller and all I have to do is press the Left Stick and it activates. Press it again to deactivate. You can…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Final Fantasy VIII Remastered is a nice way to revisit one of the most underrated entries in the series, but it doesn’t change much about the original experience. The story is still the same strong point. Squall’s journey and the emotional moments throughout the game still hold up well and remain one of the most memorable parts of the Final Fantasy series. The gameplay is unchanged, keeping the Junction system intact. While it still offers depth and customization, it can feel confusing or…

neutral · AI labelView post →Since I never finished the game back in the days, I never thought about it that much again. After refinishing ff7 og on the other hand I decided to give it another shot when I saw the release of the "remaster" here on steam. I made it to Disc 3 meanwhile and slowly I start to understand why this game isn't receiving the love most other FFs get up to this day. As a kid I really liked the more realistic proportions and the lets say more fancy & futuristic looking vehicles, clothes and weapons.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought Final Fantasy VIII Remastered in the Steam sale, applied some mods to fix the myopic pre-rendered backgrounds, transferred the mods to Steam Deck, and the results are so wonderful, I wanna cry. Honestly can't believe they called it "Remastered" & shipped it with that blurry mess.

neutral · AI labelView post →Long story short: An introverted loner's fairytale... or hellish nightmare. Final Fantasy 8 is a turn-based RPG from the PS1 era. Like any other FFs, you travel the world, fight monsters, earn XP & items and slowly unravel the story. Unlike its predecessors or successors, FF8 uses an awkward system called Junction which requires you to siphon (Draw) Magic out of enemies and then "attach" (Junction) these magic to your Stats via the Guardian Force, which are the "Summons" of this game. Since…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wow what a game From the music to the characters to the monsters and best of all Triple Triad, FF8 completely pulled me in I spent more than 20 hours just playing that awesome card game. The connection between the characters hit me at moments I didn’t expect especially after long text dumps, one of the game’s major flaws imo. I genuinely enjoyed playing as every single one of them and I loved every bit of dialogue I could get between the party members. Laguna and the dream sequences were a…

I think this is my 5th full playthrough since the game was originally released back in 1999. Personally, this is my favorite trophy I've ever earned 😉
positive · AI labelView post →This is not a good remaster. The background look realy bad, the models do look good. The gameplay is not fun, i'm fighting with de controller lots of times. Navigating on the world map is no fun, its hard to see where you walking, riding or flying to. This make's it hard to any point's of intrest. The side qeust's make's me just sad. I dont like the GF's combined with the magic system. Not going to finish tjis game. Had more fun with FF9 remastered.

negative · AI labelView post →This ♥♥♥♥ is a literal mess. It crashes constantly. I'm trying way harder than I should have to to play a nearly 30 year old game. Even getting this on a steep discount its just a shocking level of terrible for a port of a game let alone a remaster. Who the hell signed off on this getting released as a "remaster"? Anyway...At this point I'm left with either save scumming my way through this dumpster fire or buying and modding the 2013 release. Fix yo sh't square.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →FF8 was my first entry into the Final Fantasy franchise, and I am among those who think it is one of the best. Played it over and over again through my early to late teens, and wanted to revisit the game now that I'm older. This remaster scratches all the nostalgia itch without having to suffer through old PS1 graphics, buggy emulators, etc. I enjoyed being able to speed up/go invulnerable so I could breeze through combat and just enjoy the story again. The character models are all improved,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Square keeps butchering its legacy; this is another example. A classic FF from the golden era, given a lazy, atrocious ‘port.’ They changed the models and called it a day. No 60 fps, no high-resolution background textures, no HD videos—nothing. Just the same PS1 game with new ‘models’ that the modding community did before and better, for free.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has always been a blind spot in my Final Fantasy history. From 7 onwards I played every non-mmo entry but I missed out on 8 because of a faulty PlayStation. Compared to the juggernaut that was Final Fantasy 7, 8 is a much more thoughtfully paced story that takes some time to really get going. Whereas 7 wastes no time diving into it's scenario, 8 is more deliberately paced and focuses more on it's characters, rather than a world ending villain. It's not perfect, the junction system in…

neutral · AI labelView post →final fantasy is the best at telling tragic love stories. squall is one of the most well-written protagonists in the series. realistic, complex and someone you can relate to. i’d love to see a remake. just because it’s an older game doesn’t mean it’s bad, and if you’ve enjoyed other final fantasy games you should definitely give this one a try!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly the only reason to play this version is that there's a hotkey to put it at 3x speed and it keeps the music at normal speed. Besides that you're much better off playing the original on an emulator with CRT shaders. Abusing the 3x speed also kills the magic of the game IMO. Annoyances with this version -no true 360 degree movement (making it annoying to interact with certain things) -models are updated but BGs are not, making it look strange overall -$20 is way too much for a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Only a positive review to hopefully encourage Square Enix to actually remake the best FF game (yes, nostalgia speaking, even after seeing all the angst in the writing again). Surely with the success of the RE reboots and FF7, it would be easy money but the rate that they're working I'll be in a retirement home by the time it gets made. The actual review - This is NOT a "remaster", its a port with some basic features added. If you want it to look like a remaster, you will need extensive mods -…
