Final Fantasy XIV is "sunk cost fallacy - the game" and it really feels like the many longtime players telling you "it get's better later" are part of some pyramid scheme they're trying to push on you. I got through the entirety of "A Realm Reborn" and a good chunk of the boring slog beyond that which you have to trudge through to get to Heavensward. I'm sure the story get's better, I'm sure the cutscenes get more …

After 1,575 hours in this game, I still feel the joy of exploration every time I log in. Even after all these hours, there are still so many things I haven’t tried yet. This might be the only game where I’ve truly made memories. The story is wonderful, and the community is amazing. Even though I play solo, I never really felt alone in it.

This is a story-driven MMORPG that often feels more like a traditional Final Fantasy RPG inside a persistent online world. Rebuilt and relaunched in 2013 as A Realm Reborn, it has grown into an enormous game spanning several expansions. The Main Scenario is the backbone of everything, so reaching the current expansion is a massive commitment. Its greatest strength is variety. One character can switch between every …

Look, I played this game for a while. 142 hours. It was... fine. That is not my issue, however, so keep that in mind, while reading. If you want to enjoy this game, please do. What you really ought to be aware of, however, is that when/if the time comes that you decide to uninstall it, Hidden deep in the steamapp files, you will find at least 70 gigs of data leftover. Took me a ridiculous amount of time to find out what exactly was eating a game-sized chunk of my space. I understand that…

I don’t know why I feel the need to post this publicly, but I hope it reaches someone who needs to hear it. (A video game is not a replacement for professional help or for taking care of yourself.) Final Fantasy XIV has profoundly impacted my life. **Not Recommended** FINAL FANTASY XIV is a GOOD MMORPG buried underneath a game that desperately does not want you to play it. There are some really cool raids. Great boss encounters. Surprisingly deep crafting and gathering. Beautiful zones. Excellent music. Fun combat. There are dozens of charming systems sitting right there in front of you. And Square Enix guards all of them like nuclear launch codes. Everything is behind the MSQ. Want to unlock a dungeon? MSQ. Want to enter a new region?…

Came back. Big mistake. Loaded in, stood in Limsa for 5 minutes, realised nothing changed. Still a nightclub full of gremlins in armour and people dressed like they lost a bet. Said I’d check one thing. Didn’t check one thing. Did about 12 and forgot what I logged in for. Music hit brain gone. Just accepted it. Story’s still doing its thing. You think you don’t care anymore… you do. Annoying. Combat’s the same trap. Feels easy until it isn’t and suddenly you’re locked in trying not to look…

Playing through the Main Story Quest again in 2026 is a 0 out of 10 experience. SquareEnix adjusted the exp from the MSQ to level through old content "faster", except the Main Story Quest chain itself hard gates players into hours upon hours of needless 'go here and talk to 'X' quests and rewards them with gear that is 10 levels lower than their character. It was more enjoyable in the past because you had to do other activities in the game to 'catch up' to the level requirents of the MSQ and…

This game defined my life for a long, long time. I honestly haven't played in a while, but assuming it stays unchanged, the story from ARR to Endwalker is a fantastic journey. This is a slow game with cyclical, dance-like combat in terms of rotations. Class identity has faded over the years and the devs seems bent on homogenizing everything at a high level for better or for worse. Still, as long as you don't try to make this game your entire identity like I did, and you touch grass every so…

Perhaps I should, for those who don't want to scroll through thousands of words of corporate jargon in Square Enix's ToS: Before you spend $13–$15 a month on a game you just discovered five minutes ago, you should absolutely get the Free Trial. It gives you the base game and the first three expansions entirely for free. That's over a thousand hours of content just for the Main Scenario Quest (MSQ), and another thousand if you like doing every single side quest.…

It's not good anymore. Good enough if you want to check it out and enjoy the content/Story. But as a long term playing mmo, no. The content drops became stale and few and far between (with the shop getting updated more frequently and with better rewards than obtainable ingame), while the obsessive community will deflect any kind of criticism and will harass, dox and witchhunt you due to their parasocial relation with the developer. This game is an insult to game design. The duty roulette is a chore and I fall asleep doing dungeons, often you wont be able to use your max level character cause content scales you down and removes most of the abilities you have earned. FINAL FANTASY XIV Online is a rare MMO that feels like a full-scale Final Fantasy first and an online game second. It opens slowly, but once it finds its rhythm it delivers a polished, story-driven experience with strong presentation, memorable music, and a world that’s easy to sink into for months. The main story is the backbone here, and it’s unusually important for an MMO. Cutscenes, voice acting, and character arcs steadily improve as you progress, and later expansions (if you keep going)…

the best way to describe this game is as a movie. the gameplay itself can best be described as sterile: from the beginning, the developers have eroded any sense of character or fun that you may have been able to get out of the actual core gameplay-- which is running dungeons, and endlessly pressing the same sequence of buttons, over and over. the combat, as with most mmos, has no depth outside of memorization. some might say the depth comes from fight mechanics, wherein you must complete…
