What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 187 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (6,122 of 6,720 positive).
Players praise the game's physics and destruction, calling it a classic arcade racer that still holds up. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the game is difficult and punishing, with unpredictable physics and frustrating minigames. [4][5][6]

Please read. (4/10) Recommended, no. I came into flat-out with no nostalgia to this game or the series, So this was my first experience with the original game. Unfortunately, It didn't hold up particularly well for me. The biggest issue I had is the handling, The cars often feel heavy and unpredictable, Making races more frustrating than fun. The career can become repetitive, repeated maps and reversed ones too. …

Still One of the Best Arcade Racers Ever Made It's honestly surprising how well this game has aged. Both the gameplay and the visuals still hold up incredibly well. It feels just as fun, fast, and satisfying as it did back in 2008 when I first played it. The soundtrack is the cherry on top. It's easily one of the best soundtracks ever. Huge respect to the developers for not abandoning the game. They recently updated …

Much harder than I expected. You’re forced to drive at full speed almost all the time, while being extremely precise — one small mistake and you’re launched out of the car like a ragdoll. The stunt events (throwing the driver like a bowling ball, for example) are especially brutal. Took me about 18 hours to finish 100%, and while it was stressful at times, the satisfaction after completing everything was huge. …

Objectively it is a good game. Still very fun. Subjectively, I just beat the campaign and I freaking hated it. There is something I still don't understand about car physics. Sometimes a car handles beautifully, going into very controllable slides, cutting corners, responding to inputs, feels good. Then it suddenly becomes an uncontrolable boat, sliding for miles right into forest with no grip whatsoever, Sometimes a …

84% of the 187 Steam reviewers we collected recommend FlatOut. The complaint that keeps coming up: physics can be wonky and unpredictable. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
FlatOut received "mixed or average" reviews on all platforms according to the review aggregation website Metacritic. In Japan, Famitsu gave the PlayStation 2 version a score of all four sevens for a total of 28 out of 40. The Sydney Morning Herald gave the game a score of four-and-a-half stars out of five and stated: "The handling is remarkable, and the fact the tracks are littered with obstacles that bounce and crash realistically makes it all the more fun. Throw in excellent damage modelling and it's plain to see that this game has nailed the core mechanics of an addictive racer perfectly". The Times gave the PS2 and Xbox versions a score of four stars out of five and wrote that the truly…

Thought I'd do it again this year! What games did you complete (or just play a lot of)? What did you think about them? Highlights? Lowlights? Might be a good chance to find some hidden gems while the Steam sale is on too. I finished a surprisingly large number of games this year. Sorted by date completed, oldest first... **A Short Hike |…

Illustrators not sharing in that, especially for games with long-term success, is not fair or equitable. I was very happy when Flatout Games added royalties to Beth's contracts.

neutral · AI labelView post →I know people weren't so hot on the original game but FlatOut 4's official VR version feels incredible to play, even in early access. Need to get better footage capture next time but an hour just flew by store.steampowered.com/app/3844750/...
positive · AI labelView post →Definitely going to make me *much* more hesitant over any AEG board game, but you can pry the Flatout Games that they distribute (particularly the Calico and Cascadia families) from my cold, dead fingers. But hope the Flatout folks see how little respect their publisher's COO has for designers.
positive · AI labelView post →Wreckfest 2 is in early access, if that counts as upcoming. Same developer as Flatout 2, so it should feel similar, just more modern.

neutral · AI labelView post →Overall: 6/10 Story: There's no narrative here at all. That means no dialogue, cutscenes, or plot points of any kind. Instead of a story, this game features a straightforward career mode/campaign where you progress through three main championship tiers: Bronze, Silver, and Gold, which total out to 36 races. Personally, I don't think that's a bad thing whatsoever. This game is from before the era where every racing game needed a super corny narrative to go along with it, so it's 100% focused…

positive · AI labelView post →Virtua Racing - FlatOut - for the Playstation 2. It's not a bad racing game, but it's a lousy Virtua Racing. Still kinda neat to poke around in, race all the tracks, unlock the secret cars... Not sure what they were thinking with that map of the final track. What a mess. #retrogaming #sega
neutral · AI labelView post →PS@ Virtua Racing FLATOUT is an interesting... remake? sequel? It's not a port of the Virtua Racing arcade game like Genesis or 32X (yes 32X has extra cars/extra tracks). It's a LITTLE like the Time Warner Interactive's VR Virtua Racing for Saturn. 🧵 #virtuaracing #videogames #racinggames #sega

Wreckfest Wreckfest is a newer game on this list but it definitely echoes racing games of yesteryear - namely FlatOut and Destruction Derby. this is a very tasty driving game with silky smooth handling and a wide variety of game modes. you can race on a circuit, or demo derby some lawnmowers 😆

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I might be nostalgic and see this game from 20+ years ago through different eyes than an objective player, but wow, I had so much fun with FlatOut. I’m genuinely grateful that Steam Achievements were added, so thank you for that, devs! Yes, some of the minigames can get a bit frustrating if you keep approaching them with the wrong strategy, but 100% completion is very doable in under 10 hours.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Are the FlatOut games any good?. I’m considering getting these games. I’m more of a Need for Speed fan most of the time, but I’m looking for a game that is DRM free and that feels great to play and can run on most modern computers. Thoughts?

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you have played Wreckfest and haven't played Flatout, you really should, even if just to see where it all started If Flatout never came out, there would be no Wreckfest like we know it today. This game holds up amazingly well for its age and is really enjoyable to play. There is a little more strategy and planning to this game than its follow ups (don't just buy a car if you can't afford to upgrade it at the same time) and it does have some poorly aged decisions and small bugs here and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game should stand rather as a test for your racing skills, if anything. There are popular myths among the gaming community: The 7-lap race in NFS: Underground being too hard, the pre-patch race in Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven being the bane of the players' existence, and so on. Revisiting those games 20+ years later, you'll figure out that all of this was practically the result of people's skill issues, because, well, the gaming industry was just born in those days; of course you'll…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unlike FlatOut 2, I haven't played this one for a loooong time. And it turns out to be worse than the 2nd game in almost every aspect. Many QoL features are lacking. When you buy cars, you don't see their parameters (just a couple) so it's hard to compare and decide which one to get. In the tuning menu, you also don't see the overall parameters of the car, instead you have to go over certain upgrades to see what you have now and what they will change. But things like tyres don't show any…

neutral · AI labelView post →FlatOut is proof that childhood trauma can be fun. You don’t race in this game. You enter a controlled disaster and pray the driver survives long enough to become airborne in style. The physics were stupid. The crashes were glorious. The minigames were unhinged. The memories are immortal. Modern racing games try to look realistic. FlatOut looked like a lawsuit and played like a masterpiece. Legendary game. Absolute madness. Peak childhood.

negative · AI labelView post →I grew up driving big American cars around a farm and Flatout does a great job of bringing those memories back. Flatout is a fun, crashing ride around dirt roads where you get to do a lot of damage to your car and others. I love this game. I love the crashes. I love the physics. I love the way that the cars handle. I can feel the response of every wheel to the ground. If one wheel hooks a ditch, it feels like that wheel catching and not the whole car responding with an average response like…
