What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 246 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (561 of 665 positive).
Players praise the unique blend of deckbuilding and tactical combat, comparing it to Slay the Spire and Into the Breach. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the game lacks variety and depth, with repetitive gameplay and a steep difficulty curve. [4][5][6] A few players express frustration with anti-synergies and a lack of meaningful unlocks. [7][8][9]

I am conflicted about this review, but I feel Fogpiercer lacks tactical depth and does not meaningfully distinguish itself from other titles. Visually, the graphics and animations are very smooth and pleasant to look at and the game feels very polished. The core combat mechanics are simple and easy to understand. The game's most unique features such as environmental obstacles and, of course, the train/wagon system …

I just finished my first run on the full game. Despite dying, it is a fun, engaging, fresh take on deckbuilding. Your deck is dependent on the types of carriages, locomotive and driver that you select with options to further modify your cards using card modification rewards which can lead some very interesting upgrades, making your deck extremely powerful and satisfying. I personally really enjoy lobbing the enemies …

The game is great, a nice mix of Slay The Spire and heavy inspiration from Into The Breach. Fun deckbuilding and optimising for a playstyle of choice with tactical grid-based turn-based combat akin to Into The Breach with enemy friendly fire, collision damage and hazards. From just playing 2 runs (and a bunch more from the demo) the game is definitely a great pickup if you love Into The Breach, but in its current …

Solid overall first 20 hrs. However, in terms of longevity or scaling difficulties this game fails like so many other cardbuilders to realize how to make a fun scalable challenge for the deckbuilding genre. Making your deck function less by introducing modifiers that makes your deck not function is always a fundamental mistake, especially by fog level 2...

This game is awesome. If you like turn based roguelites, like Into The Breach or Shogun Showdown, this should be for you. Lots of cool card and train car combinations to keep things fresh, and the gameplay itself is snappy and fun.

This is an interesting game to talk about, because it's quite flawed, it lacks variety, and doesn't do anything particularly innovative, but despite all that I've been glued to it because it has The Juice™

neutral · AI labelView post →For a rogue-like game your mechanics are very often counter productive. Enemy mechanics are not interesting but simply overwhelming in a sheer number at once. Each encounter is hardest on turn 1 which means you have no preparation or build up. Some cards are designed to be bad but in certain situation should be manageable, however there are no certain situations for it...

neutral · AI labelView post →Not gonna lie, I initially bought this game and refunded it after getting frustrated at some of the anti-synergies. I bought it again after seeing a patch addressing some of the issues I had, and I still don't like how some of the gameplay works out (doing fog level 3 runs at the moment). Mostly, I wish the flexibility in car combinations was better. Trying new things and trying to find niche combos seems to get stifled early before I can really flesh out the deck. That being said, I cannot…

neutral · AI labelView post →Dont trust the tutorial and the first hours; This game has a lot of depths and is a very brilliant and original take on the genre. You wont have a huge number of cards, and the fact that you can only move forward/backward on a rail could make you think the gameplay is pretty bland but thats a HUGE mistake. All the cards are meaningfull and the game is more about moving ennemies around than moving yourself. Trust me, if you like deckbuilding and tactical games, you'll love this one. This…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is something about this game that after every run I can only sum it up as being ... annoyed. It feels like the game expects you to play a near perfect card draw / execution, yet half of the cards feel like they don't mesh together and are just one offs. On top of that, even when I lose these runs I don't feel like I am unlocking better cards to help future runs, let alone other components / drivers. Maybe there is some synergy here I am just not seeing, but after several runs thus far it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very happy with this game. Having your deck defined by the cars you assemble your train out of makes for a nice twist on the deckbuilder genre, and the game makes good use of its tactical grid for movement abilities. Animations and art are polished and fun, all in all extremely satisfied with my purchase!

neutral · AI labelView post →So, the thing with Fogpiercer is that it isn't what I would call a 'bad' game. It actually plays well and it's pretty straight forward. The issue I'm having though is that in, IDK, like 6 rounds or so, I just kept feeling like I was doing the exact same thing over and over. Extremely repetitive and just kind of boring. The game functions like a free lootbox system, and I'm just not having fun. All that to say, this isn't a terrible game, I just don't like it. 6/10

neutral · AI labelView post →I've played a handful of runs and even won one. I wish I could give this a "Meh". The game looks great but falls way flat on gameplay. The main issue is that a lot of the pieces of the game are interesting on their own, but fail to create a cohesive experience. Here are some examples: Train ramming destroys an enemy but since the car HP is so low it's almost never a good idea to spend an HP to take a single enemy off the board. You can only move the train forward and back, but it…

positive · AI labelView post →something about this game is wholly unsatisfying. most cards are underwhelming or rarely useful, much like most carriages and most modules. the first driver has great gauge powers but the second driver is hot garbage. a lot of the carriages let you do certain playstyles, that just do not work. i never unlocked the two last drivers, every time i launched this game i played three or four runs that were just frustrating and then i closed the game and tried again another day. maybe in a few years…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Into the Breach with solid deck construction. You like any of those, you will probably like this game. Was a little bit unsure about variety in the beginning, but the extra carriages/cards you unlock can turn this into a really thinky puzzle game (in a good way). And yanking a raider truck with crane and throwing it into the river is just the best :D

I strongly reccomend this game if you like games of the same style!! neutral · AI labelView post →I don't particularly like rogue-likes or rogue-lites, but this game has a great price point and I like the art style, so I thought I would give it a try. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. The game is pretty great and I find each run to be interesting and nuanced. There is what I would call a "turn 1" problem that just frontloads the worst turn of a fight for round 1 and they get progressively easier as the fights go on. It can be kind of upsetting every time you load into a fight and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game. Well worth the 15$ (20$ off sale) price point especially compared to other deckbuilders. A lot of unlocks and customization to go into runs with Minus points because like every rogue-like game these days it is developed around "beating" the game in the first 1-2 hours, then repeating runs. Would much rather FTL style roguelikes back where I didn't get my first "win" until 20-30 hours in.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The first time I got to try out the demo at a convention a few years back I ended up playing 2 hours straight and missing my lunch break. Great game. Great take on the deckbuilding genre. HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORN
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Exceptionally fun game. Played the hell out of the demo and bought it as soon as I could. Great looking art style combined with fun turn based combat and a diverse range of cards and modifiers. Has a "story" behind it, but doesn't get too much in the way, which is good for a game like this as it lets you replay it as often as you'd like without being bored.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly not a huge fan, it feels pretty samey pretty fast, and the difficulty of the earlier runs where you have few cards to work with is pretty swingy. Slay the Spire has kinda nailed the concept of the difficulty curve, but this just feels lacklustre. Plus, the train cars that generate useful cards have SUCH low HP, it can sabotage your run way faster than a game like Slay the Spire.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Into the Breach with trains and cards. It's quite good and has great visuals. But the gameplay can be too repetitive because of how long the runs are. Also the first area tends to be too easy and feel like busywork before any kind of challenge begins.

neutral · AI labelView post →I have finished exactly one full run and beat it, This game sets itself apart from the rest as the cards you obtain throughout the run are specific to the train carts you have, rather than require to piece together random cards throughout your run. Despite being a card based roguelike, the gameplay is closer to Into the Breach, where the battles aren't as simple as something like StS but are instead their own miniature puzzle to figure out. What I found particularly interesting is the ability…

neutral · AI labelView post →Really have been enjoying the game. The train car mechanics are very fun. This game feels like a mix between "Slay the Spire" and "Into the Breach". Really enjoyed the different conductors and themes of each train car and engine. The grind does get a little intense after a while with the last train car. I was able to level up just about every car by the time I got my first "full" completion, but am still a long ways away from unlocking the final car. 1000 spikes is just a crazy amount of…

Diificulty rapidly escalate once you raise the fog level and if there's an 'ending' hidden being the maximum fog level, it's more than I'm willing to put myself through. Still, this is a nice small game. Well made, with an interesting number of options and a positionnal turn-based gameplay that's puzzely and works well. The movement dynamic has some novelty and the snowpierce fantasy is lowkey acheived. Maybe get this on discount, but it…

positive · AI labelView post →A very thought out train card game. I like the satisfaction when I take out multiple enemies with one shot. It look simple at first, but the unique combat system requires some thinking. Great game, kudos to the devs!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →as it says on the tin, a turn based tactical game that feels like Into The Breach but with trains and cards and all that good stuff. Back during the Next Fest, I played a lot of the demo and now I finally have the full game and it works as advertised, tons of fun and cards and everything!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It feels like this game falls into the trap of the Steam 2hr return window. Make the game long enough with the first level & tutorial to make it past the return window then have a vertical spike in difficulty in the second level. The game play loop is somewhat fun but terrible progression. Lots of QOL improvements needed too, preview of cards, being able to rewind one step instead of the whole turn (another time wasting mechanic to get past the 2hr window) .
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A roguelike deckbuilder for the roguelike deackbuilder fiends. While I personally wish there was greater depth to the characters and worldbuilding, the game itself is a blast and worth it at full price. My one gripe is the list of unlocks is relatively short at 1.0, but wanting more game in a game is the best kind of problem to have for as long as the devs plan to support it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →CHOO CHOO! Really loving the game. Unlimiited resets per turn is a godsend in this genre, allowing players to really explore all their options in hand.

This uniqueness makes mixing and matching a fun experience to find what you think is the best loadout.
