What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 54 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (174 of 209 positive).
Players praise the addictive roguelite hack-and-slash gameplay and beautiful pixel art. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the game is challenging and requires patience, but is fair. [4][5][6]

This game could be really fun, but it glitches out while trying to pick up runes constantly. I've had to end more runs by force closing the game because I couldn't exit the rune pickup window than I have by dying. The controls are also super laggy when using a controller. It's not so bad with a mouse and keyboard though. Hopefully they will fix these issue, because it does really seem like it could be pretty fun.

Folk Hero has quietly become one of the best new roguelites in recent memory. There are a lot of good things to say about Folk Hero -- the game is absolutely brimming with great ideas. I think a good place to start, though, is the level generation, because it's been a while since I've enjoyed exploration so much in a roguelite. While the game does use a "room" system, the contents of the room are procedurally …

Hard but fun game. Requires patience but is still very fast paced. Combat is really engaging and fun. Enemies clearly telegraph their attacks, and if you don't respect their timing you will get hit. Haven't seen most of the items and rune combinations yet, but what I've seen looks nice. Some bugs with release, but most have been fixed already within a day.

So, I like Folk Hero. I liked it when I took a look at the demo some time ago, and I like it now. I recorded some of my progress in Folk Hero. Please take a look if you value a more Audio / Visual experience, as I discuss the game as I hack, slash and bow blast my way through it; in some semblance of style perhaps! https://youtu.be/9vyCCkxkiwI Folk Hero is an Indie, Hack and Slash Action RPG, an Action Roguelike …

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quite a fun and challenging game! I've done about 12 runs and look forward to more. If you like Children of Morta, you'll like this game as well. The second rune buffing the first rune is a VERY cool concept. I really like this and would love to see it expanded even further. Areas for improvement: - Unlock other classes faster (after 12 runs, I haven't unlocked any additional classes) - Change the disappearing drops (preferably to NEVER disappear). Combat is challenging (albeit I'm playing on…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Folk Hero is a really enjoyable action roguelite with a unique atmosphere and challenging combat. I love the pixel-art style and the Slavic fantasy setting, which make the world feel different from other games in the genre. The combat is satisfying because it rewards patience, good timing, and learning enemy patterns rather than simply button-mashing. I also enjoy experimenting with different weapons, runes, and artifacts to find combinations that work best for me. The difficulty can be…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Canace's background isn't in game: I use Folk Hero for her within it but her actual background is Sailor! Self-explanatory. She was born on a ship, raised on ships and in dockland villages and towns, can direct a ship with skill, and lives and breathes the sea. (Screen by @/aristenfromwarsaw 💕)

neutral · AI labelView post →The game is a bit 1-note. The runs feel the same, the classes take a long time to unlock. The difficulty is very inconsistent--running around in the levels fighting mobs is easy, then some bosses are quite hard. The exploration is tedious as you run into the same small handful of events and loot over and over. You can't transition between map areas unless you come to a specific spot in the screen, dragging travel time out way too much. There's about 10 hours of fun here, nothing inspiring.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Extremely well done pixel game with replay-progression designed in a way that is not overly tedious, as many others of its type can be, definitely worth a pickup
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game, The camera on the ranged mode needs tweaking. Also, would be good to be able to aim my shots since the auto aim cant target anything that is not running straight towards you. Some of the difficulty needs tweaking, game shouldnt be easier but the progression is too slow and some of the enemy attacks are not predictable so you cant git gud Edit 1: Have to set this at a thumbs down for now, game became unplayable after beating it once. All runes are gone from shops. Other shops are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Way too basic. Also don't like the art, reminds me of Hyper Light Drifter but worse and I hated HLD.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game with game-breaking bugs. You try to finish a level in coop and all of a sudden you can't see your chars anymore, because the positions of the chars don't align with the screen anymore. So you're basically walking blind and quitting means losing all the progress of the run. Do I want to play such a game? Nope. Fix this thing! This is a refund reason. Reply to the reply: It has happened in 2-player local coop on a Windows 11 PC a few times now such that we don't want to play the game…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Having only gotten to the Baba Yaga by this point in gameplay, this game features a very healthy difficulty. Each death feels like it has meaning, since you have to start each run over when you die. The combat feels very fluid, and each class has its own advantages and disadvantages. I dont find myself doing well with the knight, but the Recruit class seems to be a perfect balance for me at this point. Perhaps we could have Steam Workshop implemented for folks who want more content?
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →mediocre gameplay and upgrade system
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun mechanically, but meta progression is slow and not very impactful. You will largely be relying on your own ability to "get good" and luck. I haven't made it past the first room in the second area due to the extreme difficulty spike.

I’m a sucker for pixel art games just like this one. I haven’t made it past the 3rd stage ‘s boss yet, but man oh man, I’ve gotten enough deaths to show my love for the game 😂 I bounce around games quite a bit but this game has had me come back quite a few times when I feel like fighting for my life against a large bear 😅 once you play you’ll understand…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In Los Angeles circa 1991, humans live alongside extraterrestrial humanoid beings whose spaceship crash landed three years earlier. This coexistence is not always harmonious, as exemplified by segregated slums and the uneasy partnership of police detective Matthew Sykes with new humanoid partner Sam Francisco. However, the pair begin to overcome their differences as they play "FOLK HERO" while investigating a slum drug ring led by the slippery William Harcourt.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If Folk Hero was in EA I would recommend it but as it stands there's too many minor bugs that can ruin a run for me to do so. Would also be nice if combat was a bit more fluid. Hitboxes to animations could use some tweaking.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its ok, feels too slow, items sometimes lost in terrain, some achievements not working.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty fun roguelike that reminds me a bit of In Celebration of Violence, though more straightforward. There aren't a ton of classes, but variety is good. Minor technical issues on Deck (occasional stutter), but generally performance is solid.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It takes you on an exciting journey through the world of folklore. The gameplay is filled with interesting mechanics and quests, and the graphics are impressively beautiful. This game is a must-try for all fans of adventure and mythology.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've only played with two friends, and it's really fun. It has some interface issues in multiplayer that I imagine you won't have in singleplayer, but it isn't anything that disrupts the active gameplay.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really tried to like the gameplay but it's a no in the end. It takes 20 minutes to finish the forest just to get killed in the first part of the swamp because all the enemies are so fast and jumpy while my character is clunky and gives almost no feedback on its actions
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Upgrading this review from a thumbs down to a thumbs up. The progression-stopping bugs from 1.0 have been fixed in 1.1. And now what we're left with is a game that is really fun. The combat is super harsh but very fair. It never feels cheap when you get hit. It always feel like your fault. But everything controls great and the enemies are fun to engage with. And that means the ability to do well is at your fingertips. Very well done!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really loved this game! The idea of heading out, taking on enemies, upgrading your character and then going back for more, each time coming back stronger, is right up my alley. I really enjoyed both the concept and the gameplay, and before I knew it, I was hooked and couldn't stop playing! Great job, devs. Looking forward to seeing more!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Folk Hero is an interesting game, can't beat the friggin bear though. I do like the art however! We sent the snuggles over to @cozywithjoy.bsky.social
neutral · AI labelView post →Great game! Has elements of Risk of Rain, Binding of Isaac, etc. & uses them well, lots of fun with co-op. Challenging but definitely beatable, quests & items keep things interesting run after run.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well the game wasn't very enjoyable in both my opinion and my friends and we had a few glitches that torn the screen from the characters and made the playable area terrain we could not walk on. Just on the basis I didn't find it entertaining at all, definitely wouldn't recommend for more than like a dollar.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →real fun and nice powerup systems, not overly hard either. not far in but it's at least a 4... out of 5
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not a roguelike fan, but this one it’s different. Sucker for pixel graphics, love the gameplay, upgrades and progression. Do recommend👍
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have not yet completed the whole game yet. So far, I like this game. This is one of those retro games that you do not need the guidebook about the tactics and strategies. The gameplay is consistently difficult during the entire game from the beginning. Also, you would be repeating the same thing over and over. May give you a feeling of grinding a lot. But after all, it is what the game that I usually like to play for the entertainment.

neutral · AI labelView post →This hits the sweet spot for action rogue-like fun. Runs are long enough to keep you engaged, but not so long that they drag. The variety of interaction among a few basic game elements is enough to keep things interesting without feeling overwhelming. A simple, well-tuned play experience with great sound design and charming hand-drawn art in the cut scenes. The learning curve of this feels very satisfying
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the kind of game that I'll stumble across once maybe every six months where, a few minutes after my first run is underway, I'm saying, "Yes, this game rules! This is what I've been looking for!". I can't really identify what exactly about it made me feel that way, and there's nothing in particular that leaps out about it. It's a simple, tight, and surprisingly engaging little action game, and I've been having fun with it for the past couple weeks (and I'm about to start another run…
