Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams is a 2012 platform game developed and published by Black Forest Games for Windows. You know those games you play that just exemplify bad game design so well that you recommend it to budding game designers as an example of how NOT to make a game? Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams is that game. It starts out fun enough, and then almost immediately makes you realize the game has zero tricks up its sleeve to keep the player interested. You play as two sisters, one with an air-twirling ability and another …

I was looking forward to seeing Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams because it was aimed to be the rebirth of one of the most memorable (even if not one of the most widely known) C64 platformers of the 80s/early 90s - Great Giana Sisters. For those of you who don't know, Great Giana Sisters was a platformer done in Super Mario Bros style (some would argue "too much in SMB style", but I believe GGS was a great game in its …

It scratches that platformer itch but has its problems. There are two modes you can switch between freely: a slow fall mode and a dash mode. You use those modes to collect gems while working your way through the level. The art and the music change with the mode; switching is seamless and feels good. The game difficulty is moderate to hard. On the easier end for platformer veterans and probably a bit difficult for …

64% of the 178 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams. The complaint that keeps coming up: imprecise controls and hitboxes. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Project Giana's press demo was met with a favorable reception from gaming news outlets. John Walker of Rock, Paper, Shotgun remarked that the game "looks absolutely beautiful. It's a puzzle platformer in which you can control not only the main character, but also the mood of the world you're in". Audun Sorlie at Destructoid noted "Project Giana is truly a labor of Euro love", and that "the game seems to be shaping into what could be one of the most unique and original platformers in several years". Dustin Steiner of Gamezone noted that "the controls in particular were very polished leaving gameplay a matter of your personal skill with the engine, unlike some other platformers we've seen in…

I was a North American kid who grew up without an NES, and for this reason, I have a different perspective on retro video games. The common narrative in retro gaming circles is that the NES was everywhere—that it was totally dominant, and if you didn’t own one, you missed out. But when you look at the sales numbers, the story changes. In North America, 30…

Now, the exact reason why we were digging escapes me. But we often did a lot of digging. Kids—particularly boys—like to dig. It's just fun. Started with sandboxes. But we decided to move further afield. And there we were with our big shovels, just digging a hole. Four feet in, we found something. A shoe. One with a bright red high heel, to be…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams is an unreliable, miserable game that hides behind nostalgia and colourful pictures. The gameplay is simplistic, in multiple ways. Way too simplistic for its 23 (?) levels. You have a dash and a twirl, and the ability to change the world around you - sometimes enemies, sometimes platforms, to help you progress. The music is incredibly repetitive, I'm not even sure if there's more than two tunes during the gameplay. And even with these simplistic tools, the game…

Back in the 80s, The Great Giana Sisters came out on the Commodore 64 and became infamous for looking a little too similar to Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo Entertainment System.
