Players praise the remake for faithfully recreating the original's atmosphere and rewarding old-school design. [1][2][3] Many note that the game starts brutally difficult but becomes deeply satisfying as you progress. [4][5][6] Some reviewers criticize severe performance issues and bugs that hinder the experience. [7][8][9]

Gothic Remake – My Review After 40+ Hours After more than 40 hours of gameplay, I feel like I’ve seen enough of the game to form a solid opinion. I am not a hater, and I am not a fanboy either. Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 are among my favorite RPGs of all time, so I was genuinely looking forward to this remake and started with a positive mindset. Unfortunately, my impression has steadily worsened the more I played. …

For non Gothic fans: This game is designed to suck at the beginning and get better and better as you play. Most games start you off weak and throw weak enemies at you, increasing their level as you get better. This one starts with you so weak that it's frustrating but once you do get better and are able to defeat those monsters or NPCs that made your life hell, it's so much more rewarding. In 2001 I quit the …

I've played the original at least 10 times, one of them being right when it came out. So I was very skeptical about them redoing this cult classic... But they did it right. The game looks stunning, they modernized the right things, while keeping the soul of the game intact. Also, no performance problems on my side, played on the Gothic setting. Reuniting with Gorn, Lester, Diego and Milten felt amazing, and I am …

Never played the original, jumped in blindly based on a friend's recommendation, and holy sh✩t, this game slaps. A lot of people are probably sick of every game making you a literal god right out the gate who can slaughter everyone left and right for looking at you funny. Here, your ass is the one getting slaughtered left and right if you have the balls to try and clip somebody. You drop in feeling like an absolute …

70% of the 315 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Gothic 1 Remake. The complaint that keeps coming up: poor performance and optimization issues. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Gothic 1 Remake received "mixed or average" reviews, according to review aggregator website Metacritic. OpenCritic determined that 57% of critics recommended the game. Carlo Siebenhüner of PC Games said the game surprised him positively, lauding the atmosphere the game world as exuding a "Gothic feeling" The combat system would take some time to get used to, but the atmosphere is convincing. Stephanie Schlottag of GameStar criticized the absence of features in the review version and a difficulty level that was high even by Gothic standards. However, the publication also agreed that the classic "Gothic feel" had returned. Schlottag praised the new additions as blending well into the game and…

60 of 571 · most liked firstA faithful remaster of a 2001 game, playing as it did 25 years ago. Give it time and patience. Warning, performance issues exist. I remember the first time I experienced Gothic. The funny thing is, I wasn't even looking for it. I wanted Oblivion. It was late 2006. I’d just beaten Morrowind and was looking to take on Oblivion next. It was a different time. I was a kid, and new games meant convincing mum to take me to the video game rental store.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don’t make the same mistake as me by thinking, “I know the performance is bad, but it won’t be that bad.” Worst optimized GOTY / all time (Optimization Criteria Only). It should have come out in winter so I could use it for heating. The cutscenes turn my PC into a jet engine. It still runs like trash even when I put all graphics settings to the minimum. And the game crashed while I was writing this review. Edit: To address some comments: I’m not talking about FPS. Theoretically, I could…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fans don't need to worry, you'll enjoy it. For non-fans, please note that this is an old school RPG that has influenced many other games (such as The Witcher). Do not expect the same copy-paste lazy and boring game mechanics designed to increase play time artificially. The game world is alive like no other game and there will be consequences to your actions, positive or not, immediate or not. You start the game as a nobody, being good at almost nothing (not even holding a sword). Play and see…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →F to my brothers and sisters who didn't make it to see Gothic 1 get remade 20 years later. Finally, a game that actually deserves a remake and is more than 5-7 years old at that. Respect to the devs for listening to the player fanbase and making it look way better than the playable teaser. The atmosphere, the armors and even the meatbugs look faithful to the original. I hope this will be a success so they could remake Gothic 2 & 3!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Made it 6 hours in, about level 7 without dying when suddenly I was walking up a cliff and my character started randomly shaking and then flew off the side of the cliff and died, I've no problem with the difficulty and honestly think the game is quite good but it is RIDDLED with massive bugs and I've had several CTD's. I can't recommend it until they patch it. Edit: Also answering someone who replied snarky to me in the comments- the original game being a buggy mess isn't somehow a PASS so the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"I'm... I'm not interested in who you are." Yes, I recommend Gothic 1 Remake, especially if you want an RPG that rewards curiosity more than comfort. Gothic is not just nostalgia to me. Maybe that sounds dramatic, but Gothic does that to me. The world does not wait, flatter you or care who you think you are. You enter the Colony as nobody, and every step feels earned. For old fans, this remake is a return. For new players, it shows why this rough RPG survived in people's hearts for 25 years.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gothic 1 Remake It's funny how a game with ancient design (25 years at this point) is a brand new experience in today's RPG environment. As a newbie to the Gothic series, I was drawn in to the game through previews from various YouTubers. They died a lot, but it looked weirdly interesting. Gothic puts you in the shoes of the "Hero", although you immediately get the idea that you're an actual nobody. The game tells you this through dialogue, but it backs it up through a brutal world and…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In my opinion, the Gothic 1 remake is the highlight of 2026. While it was a groundbreaking game back then, the redesigned version is exactly the same today. The entire area has been beautifully reinterpreted in a modern style and a few new features also allow you to discover new places that didn't exist back then. All dialogues have also been voiced, and the atmosphere is truly captivating. A clear recommendation for all fans of the series, but also for newcomers.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An extraordinary rare achievement for a remake, to recreate an experience fully while also expanding on it without changing its vision. Fully recommend to anyone who liked the original game and a cautious recommendation for anyone else, if you have the patience for eurojank. The game is like salty licorice. It's unusual, you need to get used to it, but you will not find anything quite like it and if you enjoy it, you will crave more. There is simply no substitute. I was very worried about the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I finished OG Gothic 1 probably around 31 times since it was released in 2001. I highly recommend the remake to anyone who loves the original Gothic or anyone who does not like handholding in RPGs. It feels like OG Gothic, and it basically plays like OG Gothic — just a better version of it in general. I really enjoy every type of combat, and the world and graphics are just gorgeous, yet still have that dark G1 atmosphere. HIGHLY RECOMMEND 10/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I refunded after about one hour because the game does not feel ready for a full release. I understand that Gothic is supposed to be harsh, confusing, and unforgiving at the beginning. I do not mind starting weak, being lost, or getting punished by the world. That is part of the identity. My issue is that the remake feels technically unfinished and does not meet the expectations set by its price, presentation, and marketing. The trailers and overall atmosphere suggested a polished modern…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was really excited about this game, but unfortunately, the longer I play, the more I get fed up with the idiotic ideas of these people. 1. Most AI reactions have longer animations than the reason for the reaction itself, so we regularly see situations where an NPC performs a sequence of actions with a comical delay relative to what we’re doing. We can’t tell how NPCs are reacting to our actions, which directly leads to point 2. 2. Get used to quick-saving every minute because the AI…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best remakes of all time. Exemplary. It's hard to believe that it exists, but I'm playing it and can't stop. Only at Chapter 2 and already can't wait for Gothic II Remake in the same style. It's just that good. A must play for any RPG and especially any Gothic fan.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Okaaaaay. Lifelong fan here. First 90 minutes of the game: 1. In 9 out of 10 cases, no one reacts to stealing. 2. When I tried to pass through the gates, the guards wanted to fight me, so I ran away. Unfortunately, they were too stupid to understand that I had changed my position and just kept circling around my old location in front of all the spectators. 3. On high settings, the game looks ugly. Higher quality settings barely change anything. The forest is a mess, the lighting is ugly. 4.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game captures the spirit of the original game quite well, which justifies its existence, and there is potential for it to deserve a positive review. Later. And I do not regret buying it. However, I cannot recommend it in its current state. 1)Optimization. None of it. It could be okay for early access, but it is presented as a full release. Studios should learn at some point that if a game is in such bad condition, just do not release it, damn it. In practice, it means that with my RTX…

My adventure with video games started when I was 7 years old, and the first game I ever played was Gothic 1 from 2001. Because of that, this remake had a very special place in my heart Before launching the game, I had many concerns, especially whether it would truly be a faithful recreation of the original. My biggest worry was the combat system. Fortunately, I was wrong Gothic Remake is one of the best games I…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Truth Disclosure : Never played the original. That being said, I was interested in all the hype for a completely old school non-hand-holding adventure game with no map unless you buy one, no quest markers, no fast travel, where you are cast into the world with literally the clothes on you back and most everything can kill you, but if you struggle to get past that you are rewarded with a unique special experience that never gets old and wondering what is around the next corner. Eventually you do…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I genuinely love the game and appreciate the work Alkimia has put into this, but the amount of gamebreaking bugs occuring during gameplay is out of hand. I had to start the game over twice, because of trivial things like talking to an NPC too early and such. Just now I ran into another such issue which bricked my game a 3rd time, hence I'm done with the game until things look better. Again, I love the game and effort that's been put in, but right now I can't recommend it. It's like someone…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Returning to the colony after 25 years surely was a blast. This game is so beautiful and once i was nearing the end i got a little sad, knowing the journey will end soon. Exploring the world and finding the little secrets at almost every corner was so refreshing compared to those gigantic empty open world games we get fed since years. The difficulty was insane and even though i died like a million times it wasnt frustrating but just challenging. i really hope the devs will do Gothic 2.…

Unfortunately there is no "neutral" button, so I have to give it a down for now. Having played Gothic (and the first Risen) A LOT: I totally dig the original PB gameplay formula. And it works great here as a motivation engine. But there are, as of now, so many smaller things that add up: - Hit collision in the environment. Just walking can cause you character to try to climb on a stick. Deadly when…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Stop removing or changing items with every new patch, or at the very least, include those changes in the patch notes. Patch 1.0.3 removed the bow from the Old Fortress, which was part of my Hard Mode permadeath run. It was hard to reach before the story takes you there, and by the time it does, the bow isn't even that strong. If I had known it was gone, I wouldn't have bothered going there, and I wouldn't be this frustrated. This is where you're losing me, even though I *want* to love this…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ungodly amount of bugs, game crashes, and design oversights. I got softlocked 2 times with a quest. Once I could fix it by reverting to a 2 hour old autosave. The second time there was no save I could revert to at a point where I could fix the softlock, so the whole save is bricked. (If anyone is interested, there is a quest that requires 4 crawler pincers in order to progress in the Old Mine, but you can also cook those pincers into soup. I killed all the Minecrawlers before I progressed that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the most addictive games I’ve played in a long time. I’m a very big fan of this sort of minimal handholding and genuine discovery. However, I have not played a game in ages with this many game breaking/progress halting bugs. Seems every 5th quest bugs out and cannot be completed without a reload, losing me hours of progress on multiple occasions. If you don’t have the patience for this sort of thing, I would recommend waiting for some more patches before trying this out.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ugh, some Gothic 1 Remake reviews really bother me... they're so passive-aggressive & snarky, like they can't respect people still liking Gothic in 2026. This and the edgy journo rants against Crimson Desert's design paint such a bad image... it's a very narrow view of what video games should be.
negative · AI labelView post →Without beating around the bush: this is a damn good remake, way above what pretty much anyone was expecting to be. I have nitpicks and complaints, but they are frankly all about fairly minor things that can be addressed in updates or at worse resolved by modding. Examples may include: - the lockpicking system being gratuitously annoying and time consuming. I modded it out of the game and I don't feel bad in the slightest about getting rid of it. - the dynamic pricing from vendors…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First of all, I'm a hardcore Gothic fan. Gothic was the game of my childhood and is still my most-played game of all time. This was only the second game I've ever preordered, and I've been waiting for it since the playable teaser was released back in 2019. The good news is that Gothic Remake stays very faithful to the original—maybe even too faithful at times. The atmosphere, music, world, and overall feeling of Gothic are all here. It genuinely feels like Gothic. I also like many of the…

I like the newbie starting point and having to work your way up without the game holding your hand. Great sense of progression! Saw a few reviews regarding the graphics. Disabled Nvidia reflex and kept frame gen off. DLSS on quality. The graphics are super CRISP and look super appealing. Game runs smooth as butter so no complaints there.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A true fan’s verdict: a masterful remake with a few combat flaws As someone who has beaten the original Gothic games dozens of times, I approached this remake with a high level of skepticism, especially after the initial Playable Teaser. However, after completing the game on the maximum difficulty setting, I can confidently say that Alkimia Interactive has delivered a highly respectful and genuinely grim remake that honors the legacy of the Penal Colony. Atmosphere, visuals, and sound The…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you keep at it, after about 30 hours or so the game gradually turns into Witcher3 Jokes aside I have no nostalgia for Gothic, hadn't even heard of it until that boxer Jan Błachowicz mentioned it in a random interview I saw a clip of on Instagram. And this is AMAZING. Yes there might be performance issues, and it doesn't have that AAA polish, but the core of the game is just so unique and enjoyable that I cannot put it down. Absolutely worth full price to me.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Growing up with Gothic, I was hoping this remake would stay true to the original — and it absolutely did. It feels both nostalgic and fresh at the same time. An amazing experience for old fans.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is still full of game breaking bugs (going to water mages before being tasked to), and other bugs and chrashes. Furthermore the publishers/ developers activly patch so that exploration adn defeating strong foes early in game is punished by removing the reward weapons/ perma potions/ loot. This is unaceptable in a RPG.... ALso the patches are constantly rebalancing things, that werent broken in the first place while leaving the extremely weak things alone.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am honestly blown away. I never played the original, so experiencing the game for the first time and cannot comment on how faithful to the original it is, but I can say that had I known what I know now before, I would have played the original before and regret not giving the Gothic franchise a chance earlier! I am a huge Elder Scrolls fan and for some reason never gave Gothic a fair shot like I did ES, but this seriously rivals the very best RPGs out there. Yes there's been some crashes here…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gothic Remake has done a lot to deserve a thumbs up however, near the end of the game my opinion is currently negative. Mostly for: Mage gameplay has a reversed power curve Leaving Power out of Power fantasy, you get the fastest long range spell first (fire bolt) and the higher tier options either do no damage (pyrokenesis) or have a 3-5 second charge time (fireball, ball lightning) which also misses 50% of the time from terrain collision, or are short range charge AOE spells. The…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was very apprehensive about going into Gothic 1 Remake. Gothic is a series I hold very dear, and the original remains one of my favourite games, despite its many flaws. Its approach to world-building, atmosphere, and character progression felt unlike anything else in 2001, and that uniqueness is exactly what made the idea of a remake so risky. The original game had plenty of shortcomings: bugs, awkward controls, clunky systems, and quality-of-life issues that modern players would…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As a game 10/10 Game of the year Game itself basically works fine on linux but with RDNA2/3 GPU you need to use optiscaler + FSR4.0.2 to make it run butter smooth. In game baked FSR3.1.5 looks bad and performs worse. The INT8 version of FSR just works better. But this is the solution till we get FSR4.1 for RDNA2/3 native. P.S Game is honestly not hard as people think. It has just learning curve at the beginning some people find hard to climb over
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finished it. The Remake is really good. A lot of improvements and changes over the original that remove some of the absurdity of the OGs story. Had a blast almost all the way through. But a patch will definitely be necessary. Some quests are too easy to accidentally break or make a hell to complete. And the game crashes a lot. There are a few issues with the much anticipated Polish Dubbing too. There are certainly things i wish were done better, but overall i don't think it's enough to ruin…

It's far better than the old demo I played some time ago, way closer to the original game than I thought it'd be (though there are some new things, which I won't spoil here) The lockpicking minigame is terrible though, wish they'd just left things as-is there. Tech-wise it's not the best thing ever made (it has some hitching when saving, and sometimes when you enter a new area, good old UE) but it runs OK in…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Remaking a game like Gothic is a massive challenge. The original has a very special atmosphere, memorable characters, factions and locations, and a roughness that became part of its identity. So when I started Gothic 1 Remake, I was curious whether Alkimia Interactive could capture what made the original so special while still turning it into a modern game. And somehow, they did. Oh boy, let me tell you, from the very beginning, the atmosphere just screams Gothic. The dark forests, mines,…

This is Gothic 1, the monsters kill you in 1-2 hits, the music is there, the feeling like your ♥♥♥♥ at the start, the dialog is there and there's also a few additions in terms of quest and areas, it's all there. Can't wait to play the game with all 3 camps. I hope this turns out to be a great success and you end up doing Gothic 2 next which will be just crazy.

But not because of the gameplay (except for the excruciatingly tedious lockpicking mechanics), but because of the bugs. I was expecting some bugs, from the pre-release reviews and opinions I've read. From characters opening blank conversations that lock you out of the game, to the camera having collision physics with the birds that fly between you and it.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Rough diamond in need of polishing that got enshittified by developers. The plot got more shallow by the retcons sadly. The main issues is that... It is insane that initial release kept the spirit of the game, while next patches attempted to kill the funniest thing the game has to offer - freedom in exploration. With each next patch, items keep getting removed, replaced, relocated or chaptergated. I will change the review after devs stop trying to assert dominance in the dumbest way imaginable…
