What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 208 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (8,129 of 8,977 positive).

This is a really hard one. The characters, voice acting, story, music, world, and style of this game are all top notch. But half of the puzzles are so obtuse and fiddley that they feel impossible to solve without a guide. Some of the solutions really felt like they weren't grounded in logic at all and instead you would just randomly use a random item on a random character and something random would happen. On top of …

Grim Fandango is one of those games that feels like it came from a completely different universe. It's a noir detective story, a comedy, a road trip through the Land of the Dead, a love story and somehow also a game about working in customer service. And it all works. Manny Calavera is easily one of the most memorable protagonists in gaming. He's a travel agent for the dead, trying to sell premium tickets to the …

Grim Fandango is one of the funniest and smartest-written games I've played. Not only that, the world is wonderful, the characters are memorable, and the story is great! Of course, it has a fair amount of bugs, and the puzzles are too obtuse at times. Yet despite that, the game is a masterpiece. 9/10, would recommend.

Man! What an absolute gem of a game that I don't know if I can really do justice through words. Amazing writing, characters and world building I had a blast playing through this, even if at times I did get lost and have to research how to progress. Overall I'm bummed it took me so long to give this game a shot but I'm so glad I did and you should too!!! Amazing work from Tim Schafer and Lucasarts thank you for such …

The puzzle logic makes perfect sense after you look up the answer and cry.

neutral · AI labelView post →I have started a new file in Grim Fandango more times than I can remember over the years. Despite this game having so many things going for it, from the characters, to the writing, to the voice acting, to the world, it could just never keep me hooked...but I think I finally understand why. In my opinion, this should have been a movie, not a video game. Preferably a stop motion movie. (God, that would be incredible.) It has all the great markers of a movie/story...but the gameplay is ASS.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Grim Fandango Remastered had the right idea having an achievement/trophy tied to using classic tank controls the entire game.

neutral · AI labelView post →Grim Fandango? The one with the skull guy? Man, I love that game, man. Who doesn't love running around endlessly, clicking on things endlessly. What a treat! Figuring out these puzzles, like the one where you have to take the balloon to the goop place and then shoot in down the mail shoot was pure genius!!! I wish I could play Grim Fandango every day, but alas, there's not enough hours to the day, man. My favorite part? Oh, you shouldn't have! Obviously, it's when you need to drink the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Grim Fandango is one of the best videogames of all time, and despite its old age (originally released in 1998) it still holds up great thanks to its stylization, timeless voice acting, humour, and great characters all throughout. Synopsis The game is set in the Aztec-inspired land of the dead, the place were all reaped souls go to after they die, and where their soul must go through a four-year journey to reach the ninth underworld (which is the ‘eternal rest’). Those who lived virtuous lives…

neutral · AI labelView post →Forgive the cliche, but this has aged like a fine wine. I liked Grim Fandango when I first played it a decade ago, but it was the kind of muted fondness for something you expected to enjoy, an emotion arrived at rather than discovered. I can say I love it, now, despite oddly being a little more critical of its narrative than I used to be. There's a rote, screenwriterly structure this falls into at the end, that feels equal parts originated from the form this is adopting and from the fact…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Remastered by Double Fine and released in 2015, this adventure game was initially developed by LucasArts in 1998. This version was made with considerable quality of life additions, such as the mouse control, improved lighting, remastered graphics, and developer commentary spread throughout the game. On it’s initial release, the game had small details that could be easily overlooked, like the main character facing points of interest and the minimal user interface, and other points like the…

negative · AI labelView post →Pros: + one of the most unique settings in games (or even media in general); + funny, believable characters + suitable soundtrack Cons: - some very obtuse puzzles - game-breaking technical issues - unsatisfying story resolution I first learned about GF from quotes of its witty dialogues on a gaming website. Although I am normally not a fan of adventure games, as this one was praised as one of the greatest, I still wanted to play it. Unfortunately, this ended in disappointment. There is a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yet to fully beat the game so this review isn't reflective of my thoughts on the overall game as-it-was back when it was originally released, but rather the remaster specifically. I'm still at the very start of the game and have already run into a game-breaking softlock with the wheelbarrow where Manny disappears and the entire scene darkens, and you can't do anything in that state since when you try to interact with stuff nothing happens. I looked this up and apparently this has been in the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the kind of game people long for when they say games nowadays are "Soulless" - Grim Fandango is brimming with charm and a unique setting, something that can be clearly defined within the player's mind. It isn't a hodgepodge of the most popular fads at the moment, or an entirely derivative work in fantasy or sci-fi that we often see. It's simply fun to experience the way Manny interacts with his environment, and what that environment is like. It's unfortunately quite buggy and has…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i feel about grim fandango the same way i feel about one of it's many inspirations, terry gilliam's brazil: this game/movie is wonderful, all-time classic, and so of it's era, not in the sense that it aged poorly but in the opposite sense: that if someone tried to make it today it would cost 450 million dollars, be released straight to xbox gamepass/netflix, and be one of the worst games/movies ever made. thank god it was made in the 90s you should stop looking at the steam page and just play…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Grim Fandango Remastered for $2.24 on Steam today, and there aren't words for how much joy and delight this game will bring for a third of what you would pay for a cup of coffee. Looks like it's only on sale today, so get on that before your other Halloweening.
positive · AI labelView post →#justbeatit Grim Fandango Remastered. This is an amazingly crafted game. It’s incredibly thought out and so much care is given to the story. I lost patience for a lot of the puzzles, but that’s more a knock on me than the design choices made in 1998. Deserved classic @polykillpodcast.bsky.social
positive · AI labelView post →This probably would've worked more as a movie or tv series rather than videogame to tell the truth. The world building and writing itself is quite amazing. Every character is interesting and has their own charm them. The art direction is probably one of the best in gaming history. BUT... herein lies the main problem... the game mechanics SUCK. No amount of charm can outweigh the fact that this game is IMPOSSIBLE to beat or progress without a walkthrough/guide. The puzzles aren't just…

Anyways, I have a walkthrough uploaded to GameFAQs pending approval.
neutral · AI labelView post →i can't think of a single person i know that i'd recommend this game to. it's not bad, but it's one of those games where you're using all of your attention span for something that doesn't leave you with anything in the end. the puzzles in this game oscillate between "why would i do that?" and "oh that's not really visually clear." manny, the main character, doesn't really have an archetype of problem solving or a coherent thought process. the game just expects you to jump to conclusions about…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best games of all time. My best game. Awesome story telling that stuck in my mind for decades. Every step of this production was performed with top quality!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a game I really tried to enjoy, I've always seen such reverence of Grim Fandango by people whose opinions I respected and resonated with. However, the game misses the mark for me in basically every aspect: I've seen better iterations of the story's themes and characters all without having to deal with nonsensical 90's adventure game design. If you're not in the know about 90's adventure games work, it is essentially a series of trial and error trying to figure out the singular…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →> I play Grim Fandango on a Ryzen 3 laptop with 4Gb Ram Grim Fandango Remastered, right? 'Cause it's not exactly impressive if its the original, give-or-take WINE maintaining compatibility with old Win9x libraries... I've been meaning to get around to playing that game for almost 30 years, and the remastered version for 10.
neutral · AI labelView post →I was too young to play this in 1998, so I had to pick it up as a adult, and I have to be frank, this game is an absolute masterpiece. The story, the art direction, the voice acting, it's all so incredibly good! Obviously, the game itself and its mechanics are dated, but that doesn't matter at all. This is an absolute masterpiece, still, and I can wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →wonderful game with a magnificent amount of charm, just remember to save often for softlocks / corrupted saves
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the most stylistic adventure games out there with so much charm that I actively wanted to talk to every character to the point of exhausting dialogue just to hear what they had to say. A high recommendation even if the logic of the puzzles is sometimes enough to get you to look at a walkthrough.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →30 minutes in and I already had to consult a guide due to it being so obtuse. I guess that's old point and click adventures for you and I guess that's not for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Manny Calavera might be one of the most endearing characters I have ever seen. Great characters, great vibes, a lot of skeletons.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →9 - Grim Fandango Remastered ANOTHER DOUBLE FINE BANGER, YEAAAAAAAAAA!!! PLAYED THAT SHIT ON MY VITA
positive · AI labelView post →It’s a cultural touchstone, and it’s incredibly easy to soft lock. After all this time, problems could have been solved, but they weren’t and the unsuspecting consumer pays the price.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Completion #154 - Grim Fandango Remastered 💀 This was an achievement streak game until I lost the streak, it’s worth so much more than that though. Genuinely a fantastic story, funny and some clever puzzles in there. Definitely worth a play on its own merits!
positive · AI labelView post →One of, if not THE best point and click adventure game of all time! Grim Fandango, now remastered! Yay! This is how you make a great point and click adventure game. Fun cartoon aesthetic? Check! Fun story with plenty of humor? Check! Great voice acting? Check! Beautiful world to explore? Check! The remaster is fantastic, and replaying it was just as much fun as it was when I first played it as a teenager. Tim Schafer has directed some of the greatest point-and-click…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Recommended, but only for hard LucasArts fans. The puzzles are extremely convoluted, even for LucasArts standards: lots of them make no sense at all. Play for the story and characters, with a walkthrough by your side, and you'll enjoy it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's got some tricky puzzles but the story and characters are amazing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thoroughly enjoyed. Difficult puzzles, but mostly that's a skill issue on my part. Lots of creative solutions and a wonderful story. Highly recommended.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Grim Fandango Remastered is one of those games that instantly takes me back. The atmosphere is still incredible, mixing film-noir storytelling with the Day of the Dead aesthetic in a way that feels completely unique even today. The remaster does a great job polishing the classic without losing its charm. The updated lighting and character models make everything look cleaner while still keeping the original style intact. The music is also a huge highlight. The Jazz inspired soundtrack fits…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Grim Fandango Remastered is a rare mix of noir detective drama and absurd comedy, wrapped in a Mexican folklore-inspired Land of the Dead. You play as Manny Calavera, a travel agent for the recently departed who stumbles into a bigger conspiracy, and the writing pulls you through the story with charm and confidence. The biggest reason the game still works is its characters and dialogue. Manny is cynical but likable, the supporting cast is memorable, and the humor lands without undercutting the…

positive · AI labelView post →If someone were to assert that this is the greatest game ever made, I would not be able to argue against them.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Originally, Grim Fandango came out at a bad time. It was the first explosion of 3D acceleration cards (we now use the more efficient "GPUs"), and old-school adventures were already going out of fashion, or at least the "market" considered them so, to the point of even LucasArts ditching the mouse here. And while that choice may also have contributed to GF's unique flavor (especially the design of the inventory as a diegetic interface), it's still the most questionable, because besides a few…

Adventure game were surely built differently 25 years ago... Still a cool world and story, but it definitely taught me how to NOT design puzzles. #gamedev

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Grim Fandango Remastered is a beautiful reminder that style never dies, but your patience might. The art direction? Timeless. The dialogue? Peak. The puzzles Straight‑up “I hope you like guessing”. Still, the whole thing oozes so much charm you just accept the chaos. If you want a game that feels like a noir fever dream starring skeletons with better drip than you, this is the one. [8/10]
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Grim Fandango is one of my all-time favorite games. It is colorful and charming, filled with witty and memorable characters, and accompanied by IMO one of the greatest game soundtracks ever. I played it in the 90's and was enamored with the story of Manny and Glottis searching the underworld for Meche. Revisiting it now, there are some mechanics that haven't aged well, but the heart is still there. Love love love this game <3
