Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 210 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (5,775 of 6,811 positive).
Players praise the unique art style and world design. [1][2][3] Some reviewers criticize the large, labyrinthine areas and clunky movement. [4][5][6]

Grime: The bones of a pretty good game, stretched far, far too thin. The areas are too large and labyrinthine for their own good. Wrecks the flow of otherwise interesting exploration, and wrecks it hard. Too much distance and too many ups, downs, lefts, rights, backs and forths and ups and down-agains between your revival points and the various dangers you will learn to navigate through trial and error. Amazing game. While many Metroidvanias with souls-like progression exist, few have a unique feel to them. Combat is relatively easy but engaging, the maps are full of secrets and extremely fun to explore, and the platforming is smart, challenging and rewarding. Bear in mind that although I really enjoyed the platforming, there is a LOT of it, and it may not be to everyone's taste. I was immediately captivated by the …

I just spent the last two weeks or so playing GRIME and I need to talk about. I’m shocked this game doesn’t have more reviews or a larger fan following. The game isn’t perfect, to be clear, but it’s still firmly an A tier game for the designated genres. If you’re a fan of metroidvanias, 2D platformers, and souls-likes, then GRIME will undoubtedly be up your alley. That much I am sure of. I’ve read a bunch of the …

A really solid Metroidvania. Pros: - Great variety of armor and weapons - Challenging boss and enemy difficulty - Rewarding secret areas to discover - Smooth gameplay mechanics and satisfying skills Cons: - Too few side quests - Over-reliance on the parry mechanic - Tedious late-game grinding due to a lack of good farming spots

If playing as a rock dude with a black hole for a head doesn't interest you then I'm not sure what will. Grime is really good as both a Metroidvania and a Souls-like and isn't afraid to do its own thing. The visual style stands out while not being overly concerned to appealing to everyone's tastes but they definitely did to mine. The overall muted color palette definitely contributes to the earthy theme that makes …

76% of the 210 Steam reviewers we collected recommend GRIME. The complaint that keeps coming up: overly large and confusing map design. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

David Wildgoose of IGN rated the game 9/10 points, calling it "an accomplished Souls-like action RPG". So, only Aether & Iron, Super Meat Boy 3D, Grime 2, Tombwater, Sprint City, Spark Ignites, Modulus, Darwin's Paradox, Cursed Blood, All Will Fall, Kijutsu Rider, Crown of Greed, Star Trek Infection and probably a few others. Quiet!

I'm using the RTC to time it so it's actually 30 irl minutes. The visual timer at the top is still a WIP though. #gameboy #gbstudio #gbjam #pixelart

neutral · AI labelView post →If I could give a neutral review I would. It has great things like the world, enemy designs and music... but it feels so wrong to play. There's something in the movement, the feedback when fighting that's just... not right. It's like you're made of paper but have iron shoes. I can't explain it. I've played "sluggish" metroidvanias like Salt & Sanctuary and loved it. GRIME's problem isn't being sluggish, or not only that. I wish I could put it into words.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was a blast until the end! The boss fights are amazing, absorbing enemies is so satisfying, and a DEX build rules. My only issue? I DID NOT understand the story at all lol. Still a great game, and it runs flawlessly on my office laptop. I will never forget the music and the sound effects. All bangers and so crispy. You feel the weight of each hit and the music just give you goosebumps. Overall, it's an 8/10 game. Hope you all try it!

positive · AI labelView post →I'm a bit hesitant to give it a negative review, because Grime does a lot of unique stuff but I just didn't manage to connect with the game. The map is legitimately too big and getting anywhere takes forever. World traversal doesn't feel good, enemies are all sponges and I only felt strong at the very end of the game, combat itself is a big clunky due to any and every action sucking most of your stamina and it takes forever to recover. Fast travel doesn't show in the map where you're…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I did not have fun. I kept trying, game just kept building friction instead of enjoyment. I've played many soulslikes and metroidvanias and love those genres, but did not enjoy this one. I think it is trying too hard to be obtuse and difficult, and forgot what it meant to make a fun game.

neutral · AI labelView post →I had strong mixed-up feelings about this game all along my playthrough. Loved the general athmosphere and found the cryptic story quite interesting. The fights, especially against bosses, can be though but fair. The cons got the better of me in the end : - Backtracking was never something I enjoyed in this game, a shame since it is a huge part in the metroidvania genre - Exploration in general was not fun, why so dark in most areas ? Having to jump blind and hope that there will be…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Grime is a pretty well made Metroidvania that just didn't do it for me. I did push through and finish my playthrough, and it took about 19 hours. I think my chief complaint is that the game did not feel like it respected my time. Also, combat is slow and became sort of boring after a point.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I originally wrote this review about 2 hours in when I was determined to stop playing. My former review had this "tldr: aggravating, not fun" at the top. I'm revising my review because I've officially 'beat' the game and seen one of the endings. There are a number of redeeming qualities about this game and it does have some unique charms but this is one of my lesser favorite metroidvania games. This might be my longest review of any game because I am legitimately torn on whether to give it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →10/10, the (2nd) best souls-like I've every played, for three main reasons: A) the graphics are incredible. B) the parry mechanic is very well done, and C) the story telling is great. If you don't mind a challenge, get this game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When I want to recommend Metroidvanias to people, GRIME is one at the top of the list. Full of incredible arts of a grimy (heh), brutalist world. Very Parry-centric, always interesting to see "take enemy skills/abilities" gameplay, looking forward to the sequel. Unironically rate it higher than Silksong.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →too good for how unpopular it is, this game is a great 2d souls-like metroidvania belonging in the same level of praise as hollow knight and silksong its very difficult with the parrying, but that doesn't matter too much
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Some of the best boss fights. Very challenging game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →🎮 Gameplay 🔲 Excellent ✅ Good 🔲 Average 🔲 Poor 🔲 Staring at Walls is better GRIME delivers a unique take on the metroidvania formula with its absorb-and-adapt combat system. Weapon variety is a major strength with each weapon class feeling distinct and encouraging different playstyles and experimentation. Combat is challenging but fair. Early on, it may feel punishing, especially if approached like a typical fast-paced action game. However, everything clicks once you understand that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really want to love this game, but it just does not feel good to play. Everything feels so sluggish that it makes the boss fights not enjoyable. I adore the art, and the music is outstanding, but the gameplay doesn't feel good. I did load up the sequel for a few minutes and there is a LARGE difference in how refined that feels, so I'll not be finishing the first game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Platforming is fluid and fun. Combat is challenging, exciting, and engaging. When the game reaches the point where both of these elements combine, let me tell you, the boss fights get crazy and cinematic as ♥♥♥♥! This game's combat is what every Metroidvania should be like. My only complaint is that I have GRIMED until there was nothing else to GRIME.... That being said, I cannot wait for GRIME 2!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →GRIME is a 2.5D Metroidvania where you play as Akhlan, an entity which can absorb elements and enemies in a huge world filled with unknowns. The game offers a huge interconnected world with secrets to discover around every corner as well as platforming sections that will test your platforming skills. There are many different kinds of weapons from swords, to heavy 2H to scythes. You choose depending on your own style with each having their own aesthetic look. Super solid controls and…

positive · AI labelView post →Great art style and presentation, interesting audio, combat mechanics are okay but becomes boring - almost tedious - fairly quickly. Some difficulty spikes in areas with occasionally frustrating hitboxes. Many places to explore but with little reward, especially in the first areas to hook you in. All style, little substance. Not a very compelling world, very little reason to push onward beyond enjoying the scenery. Souls-likes and Metroidvanias are my favorite games so I don't mind a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Grime has enthralling visuals and audio on top of an evocative theme so surreal I'd struggle to try to pin down one specific meaning to the experience. It reminds me of the best weird fantasy stories from China Melville or Clive Barker. It's mechanics are tried and true copies of other games, similar to how Hollow Knight is composed almost entirely of a hodgepodge of mechanics from the designer's favorite game. Thankfully, the combat and platforming are done well enough I don't mind a little…

neutral · AI labelView post →TLDR : Excellent metroidvania from start to finish. 8.5/10, highly recommended. I rarely go for 100% completion but Grime was one of those games which did not require any grind for anything, every achievement just comes naturally as you keep playing. Grime is equal parts souls-like and metroidvania. Every area is meticulously designed with tons of hidden areas and a few bosses, and the game has decent visual cues on the map to identify areas that were unexplored. I'm kinda mixed on the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's not necessarily a bad game, and I've had some fun playing it, but the complete mediocrity that plagues most of the game, combined with the frustratingly bad moments, far outweighs the positives. Because of that, I have a lot to say. Pros: I think the concept of absorbing (parrying) enemies to unlock abilities is very cool, although it could've been better implemented. Some bosses are extremely cool to fight, but they're either late-game or can only be fought in NG+ (Yikes). There are…

I just couldn't get passed them! Come all these years later after I got plenty of Soulslike experience under my belt, Shapely Fidus round 2 was a lot easier! Running around with a Cinderblock tied to a stick is also a lot of fun, and the bosses in this game are so memorable! I absolutely LOVED this game, and finally get to cross it off my…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I gave it a fair chance, but I'm going to end up discarding this one in the pile. It's a functional game, seemingly without anything broken or particularly atrocious, but it also had nothing remarkable about it. It's not a good metroidvania, nor a good soulslike. Much less a satisfactory combination of both. Visually, the game has a very amateurish look, with this low-quality 3D that makes everything look like plastic. There's a bit of visual storytelling in the environments, but overall it…

negative · AI labelView post →Very solid souls-like metroidvania! I really like how this game consistently gets better the further you progress. Almost every new area is more interesting than the previous one, almost every new boss is better designed and more enjoyable to fight than the previous one. Every single boss gives you some kind of player power which makes optional bosses less optional. Almost every basic enemy has its purpose and can give you some kind of power or ability. Weapons are plentiful and interesting to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →really conflicted about this game, i don't think it's a bad game but i really don't find myself ever wanting to replay it or ever suggesting it to anyone outside of maybe someone who is really into both dark souls and metroidvanias, and even then it's just a maybe. i really had to push myself to actually finish this game. i had fun with it no doubt, mainly in the boss fights but the overall experience was a slog. takes a while to get going and even then most parts outside of boss fights aren't…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm ashamed I didn't play this game sooner. One of the best metroidvania experiences I've ever had. It helps that I'm a sucker for parry based games, and the parry in this game is great. The background on top of the Peak of Creation is also one of the most beautiful I've ever seen, so much so that I even got a wallpaper of it. It's also one of the few games where NG+ actually feels like something new with bosses having new attacks and all that. And not only that, but one of the best bosses is…

The exploration reminds me of hollow knight, the combat reminds me of Dark Souls, with how deliberate I have to be with my timings and stamina management, but without the frustrations. The bosses are not super hard or tanky, I enjoyed them immensely. A bit sad that I'm close to the end of the game, but there's Grime 2 which is hopefully also good!
