What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 54 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (76 of 83 positive).
Players praise the game's unique silhouette art style and fluid animations. [1][2][3] Many find the gameplay fun and addictive, with satisfying twin-stick shooting. [4][5][6] Some reviewers note the difficulty spikes and repetitive mission design. [7][8][9]

At the moment, I can’t leave a positive review (even though I reaaaaally would like to, because this game is shaping up to be my favorite indie title of the year). The main reasons why: 1. The enemies are black, the obstacles are black, the water is black, and the player is black. It comes down to the fact that enemies can fly through obstacles like ghosts, so you can’t f*****g see them. So 99% of the damage I take …

This game takes me back to flash games, back in the day, but trades delightfully dated visuals for some of the most expressive, unique animation styles I've seen in any game. For a first project, this is an extremely good and fun game with LOADS of content, if just mastering the physics based platforming wasnt enough. My only problems with it are very small game feel things that can easily be ironed out in a patch. …

Super underrated. - Great replayability: High scores, speedrunning, lots of different playstyles and strategies to try for each level, and an ultra-difficult "Dread Mode" with unique player buffs to challenge dedicated players. - Great mechanics: Movement is smooth, technical and expressive, gunplay is satisfying, and customisable progression with a large weapon and ability arsenal. - Fun world/flavour: The game …

Very fun and cute. The silhouette aesthetic is incredibly creative with the creature designs and environments. With a slightly isolated but cozy and hopeful post apocalypse feel, being surrounded by water and rubble for most of the game contributes to this. The gameplay while very fun and replayable with good controls and fun upgrades kinda becomes a bit repetitive due to the length of the game. There is variety to …

fantastic game but like so many others in the genre, the difficulty increases suddenly and exponetially after the first readibly enjoyable and accesible levels have been completed (it happens around level 15 on 'regular' difficulty) Thankfully, there are accessibility options that allow one to adjust the difficulty. The downside is that using them disqualifies players from the leaderboards. It would be great if the …
Summarised from 34 of the 79 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 10, 2026. How summaries are made
93% of the 54 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Gunboat God. The complaint that keeps coming up: difficulty spikes suddenly after early levels. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

neutral · AI labelView post →This game is disappointing me. I don't regret spending $10 on this, I'm enjoying myself enough that I plan to fully complete this game. I've only played an hour so far and I plan to play it to completion, just wanted to get my thoughts down now while people are still liable to buy. There's a LOT of style. A lot of detail went in the animations and effects, the sound effects are fun and satisfying, and I like that the background was given intentionally vibrant designs to contrast the…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game keeps having a really bad bug where my mouse gets stuck for no reason. It happens a lot on the post-level results screen, where the cursor feels like it’s hitting some invisible wall and I just can’t click the next stage for a few seconds. One time it was even worse — half of my screen was basically blocked by this invisible barrier, so I could only shoot toward the left side. I had to quit and relaunch the game to fix it. I really like this game and the animation work is amazing,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I found Gunboat God to be a fairly enjoyable experience, but certainly not a stand-out in the shmup genre. The game gets full points in terms of artistic direction, which is certainly what pulled me as the simple black and white palette allowed for really fluid animation and gameplay despite being a small indie game. Each weapon certainly feels really satisfying to use with a maxed out firerate (based on your current combo) leading to some solid fast-paced action. This game was also on the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Shoot and Shoot More, This game is an barrage of shooting missions to get upgrades to make the next missions easier or the past missions completable way faster, This game is a great shooter but the other part of the game is all about dodging, jumping, and general bullet hell shenanigains of trying not to get hit by the monsters as well as the lake its self, this is a good game for people that want to hear a constant dopamine hit of cannons blasting, and fast movement, And Yeti is a cutie.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Extremely fun game to play. A chefs kiss playing this on the go with Steam Deck too.

Not only was he right, but its rare that after the first 3 stages of a DEMO am I so onboard with a game so much so I didn't need to play it until it released to know if not just liked it but LOVED IT. Despite…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Addictingly fun, challenging, and unique in a few ways. I honestly thought going into this that it was going to be a pretty straight forward platformer-esque run and gun. Yet literally just the title screen slapped me in the face like the game meant business. Genuinely love the minimal aesthetic using silhouettes rather than fully detailed art, it gives it a cartoon-ish vibe that kinda owns itself, while being rather expressive through gestures and exaggerated movements I couldn't help…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First impressions for this game are fantastic! The 2D twin-stick shooter genre desperately needs more games in it, and this one is a boatload of fun (please don't hurt me). Each area is split up between different small levels that cycle through different kinds of gameplay styles. Some will have you doing laps back and forth, others will have you being bombarded with insane waves of enemies, and others will have you grab some collectibles while shooting baddies. They all have a ranking…

Ok sure, maybe you aren't sure about wanting an actual good indie game in your slimy lil gamer hands. Well trust me, an expert game enjoyer, an expert in the field, this is GOOD. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →game is VERY fun and versatile. The different mission types breathe a good amount of fresh air into it as well as the different weapons and tools that come with which gives way to different styles of approach. Admittedly only ~1/2 way through the main story but I feel like this game deserves more recognition.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I waited all the way till i beat the game (not 100& yet) to write my review, wow this game is such a blast!! huge newgrounds energy, such fluid animations, alien hominid (invasion) esque gameplay (atleast to me, which is a GREAT thing cause i love alien hominid!!! <3) and it includes a patapon resemblant art style. yeti and baby yeti are so iconic and definitely the highlight of comedy for this game. the bosses are really fun to play especially the last one which was sorta easy but still…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Flashy, unique, incredibly polished and content packed, truly stands out among the games i've played in the past several years. Granted platformer, twin-stick, and arcade are my favourite genres so Gunboat God has been the easiest sell of my life. The diligence and dedication of the developer really shines through in the game. It's comprised of several worlds of short 1-2 minute long levels that feel good to play on and off. Some levels may feel frustrating to flawless but they are all…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've completed the first two worlds at the time of writing this review, the game is pretty solid, especially for its price. Whenever I end my sessions i find myself wanting to come back for more rather quickly. The music and feel are the game is pretty fire too.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty cool and fun game I finished in (mostly) one sitting. Artstyle and music are good. Gameplay is fun and in a better life I would have probably tried to finish Dread mode as an opportunity to test skill I've not used on the main run. One of the cool things that worked for me really well is that game tells you about some system via dialogue at certain points and it seems to happen when on average you would have enough resources to meaningfully engage with the system (this happened to me…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great graphics and animation, smooth gameplay and lots of variety in mission types. It's a bargain, too. I'm ♥♥♥♥♥ at it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Simple concept executed well. This game is a twin-stick shooter where you're in a boat that can jump into the air or dive under the water to evade enemies. Your weapon firing rate, boat cruising speed, jump/dive height and dash distance are all determined by an energy meter that fills up as you shoot and kill enemies and slowly drains over time when you're not in combat, encouraging a playstyle that is evasive but not cowardly. With this core mechanic as the blueprint, the game introduces a…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Visually impressive, high quality, innovative, funny, satisfying and too long shmup. This Gunboat God. I would gladly place it next to my favourite indie games if all regions had 25-30 stages (not 50-70) that were a bit more unique and challenging. There were just too many similar stages and rarely something stood out from the crowd. If developers would put the same effort into stages as it went into the audio-visual side it would be a masterpiece. That being said I really enjoyed my time with…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just the right amount of adrenaline. And the right amount of goofy crocodile. Well, I couldn't beat the final boss without doing most of the optional stuff, so, so much of this being beatable in 8 hours.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gunboat God is a worthy addition to the crowded bullet hell genre. With clear, identifiable action and varying levels keeping the game fresh and easy to understand, this game does not let its style get in the way of readability in horde combat. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Review time baby! Gunboat God rules! You as the player commandeer the pinnacle of crocodilian engineering, using it engage in high octane aquatic bullet hell gameplay. The ability for you to dip in and out of the water makes for some really interesting level design, and is also just generally fun to mess around with. The titular boat's continual buoyancy just kind of clicks for me in my brain hole. All the guns in the game are satisfying they feel punchy, they fit into the creative niches…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game No. 7 Gunboat God (PC) A really nice twin-stick shooter with momentum-based action. Loved the minimalistic art style. The gameplay was a lot of fun. It got maybe a bit repetetive towards the end. And I was kinda hoping there would have been more to the story. But otherwise great game!
neutral · AI labelView post →Very fun, at the time of writing this review the strongest aspects for me are the graphics (great character design, very fluid and lively animations, especially on the crocodile, the mostly black aesthetic reminds me of Downwell and Patapon) and gameplay (I just find high-score games like this fun to replay :D)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Art style is radical. Giving the best memories of flash games but polished to a bright shine. I'm fairly early in the game, but I could see this being a delightful game I come back to. Plus the gator is friend.
