What people are saying
A divisive PS2-style shooter: mindless fun for some, repetitive and janky for others.
Many players praise the game for its nostalgic, mindless action and stylish combat, calling it "good mindless fun" and a throwback to the early - mid 2000's. Some find it a perfect game to relax with, as it doesn't fill my mind with information. [2][7][23]
However, others criticize the game for being repetitive, poorly optimized, and having weak voice acting and story. One player notes it "runs like crap" and another says it gets repetitive quickly. Critics (per Wikipedia) also note it has too-similar enemies and frustrating design decisions. [7][28][30]

Gungrave G.O.R.E sits at 74% positive across 190 opinionated reactions from 4 sources. Fresh or rotten — where do you land?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Gungrave G.O.R.E received mixed reviews on Metacritic. Although praising its style and combat, IGN said it does not live up to its potential because of too-similar enemies, difficulty spikes, and "often-frustrating design decisions". Hardcore Gamer said it can be "basic and repetitive" but recommended it for players who are looking for something they can play without thinking. Push Square said it "genuinely feels like a lost PS2 game" but recommended it only to fans of the series. Digitally Downloaded's reviewer found it to live up a longtime fantasy of playing a nearly-immortal protagonist in a series of highly stylistic action sequences but found the result to be a terrible game.

60 of 241 · most liked firstVery mid game and the story is not that interesting. It's play exactly like the PS2 game just with better graphic. Gameplay is boring and repetitive, you just blast your way through hordes of enemies who all shout the same few lines (mostly F-bombs) like they’ve just learned English. It gets old fast lol But is it worth it? Honestly, NO, at least not at full price. But if you’re a fan of the PS2 game or the anime, you might find some nostalgic enjoyment here. Just wait for a discount!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think it got overshadowed a few years ago but Gungrave G.O.R.E is like the type of game more people need to make. Just weird sequels made in modern day that are ostensibly just PS2 games but in HD
positive · AI labelView post →Where are the damn trumpets and saxophones? I don't always write reviews for games on Steam, but when I do, I was hoping I could write a positive review. But this is not it. As someone who plays both the first Gungrave, Gungrave: Overdose and watched the anime series, this game is a very, very huge disappointment. And that's still an understatement of how disappointed I am with the game. I know the devs (Iggymob) probably worked hard on the game up to release date and beyond under supervision…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Gungrave G․O․R․E game is getting a "fully rebuilt" version titled Gungrave GORE Blood Heat.
neutral · AI labelView post →I was looking for a game to relax in between long and tiresome study sessions, something to play that doesn't fill my mind with information so I could actually focus on remembering everything for the exams and this game really did the trick. I might be missing context because I'm unfamiliar with the series, but if you're looking for something to unwind and you think the characters look cool, give it a try.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very basic DMC-like game. Combat is simple and never advances in a way that's satisfying. The game is poorly optimized and randomly hitches. It has a breakdown of the series story, which is nice, but it has no voice acting, and the text goes by too fast. The characters and cutscenes are cool though.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall: 8/10 Story: As someone who was completely unaware of the Gungrave series before playing this game, I honestly had no idea what was going on for most of the narrative. There's a "History" tab on the main menu that gives you a recap of the two previous PS2 games, but there's no voice over for any of it, and it crams a ton of lore into such a short summary that I honestly lost interest before I could even TRY to understand everything. Even then, I don't think knowing all of the previous…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I gave a chance this game but its boring as hell. Played with gamepad. RT Holding game. Upgrades are useless. Cant even upgrade Demolotion skills. Even hard mode is easy. Bosses has same movements. Do not go with full price. Buy it when gets 95% discount
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In this game you play as John Alucard, from Hellsing. You shoot bad guys and listen to cool music. Obviously I recommend it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's exactly like the others described, a PS2 game in somewhat modern graphics. Once you stop caring about the type of game its not, you will definitely enjoy the game. But I cannot recommend the game at full price. Get it on 80% sale and it's well worth for that price.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Imagine if, right after Overdose was released, a third Gungrave game had been fully developed, but the developers decided to do nothing with it instead of releasing it. Twenty years later, it's time to unleash the beast, and to keep up with the latest trends, they slapped Unreal Engine 4 all over it. The game focuses on its gameplay loop, and its fun, id say it plays like the original games with a much better flow,. You earn points after finishing a mission, which you can spend in the lab for…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game runs like crap, voice acting is not great and the story is out there. But it's good mindless fun. You are Mick Mars and you shoot everything and kill everything. That's the whole game. Probably best played in bursts because it does get repetitive quickly. Cutscenes are short but fun to watch. Lots of fairly easy achievements. Tons of upgrades and special abilities. You can refund your points too so you can try out new stuff which is cool. Don't care for all the overpriced dlc. There's…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I kind of like it, but not enough I'm pretty torn about this one. Sometimes I'd have fun and think "this is cool, I'd recommend this." But overall, it's just not worth it IMO. If you want a game where you can mindlessly run and shoot through the mission, this game will work. You don't even really have to aim. But it gets repetitive, and playing this started to feel like a chore. A lot of the levels just feel like filler, and this game could probably be half the length without losing…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well, I'm reluctant to call this game an underrated gem. It's not exactly the most polished tool in the box. It's not innovative, particularly well-executed, or visually impressive. And I was able to understand in the first few minutes of the game why the reception was so poor, even after many of the problems reported during launch had been fixed. This is a perfect embodiment of what people would call "one note". A premise and execution so simple and so absurdly distilled, it would pass…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is another case where I wished there was a Mixed or So so option for Steam review....but if someone asked whether I should recommend this game in general or not.....then the answer is No. Strength: 1. Stylish, yes mc wears stylish uniform, stylish dual guns and coffins and even his way of shooting also stylish. 2. Variety of upgrades, you can upgrade his demolotion shoot etc. 3. Cutscenes are alright. Neutral: 1. Story is so so. It seems devs assume player is gungrave fan and familiar…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game itself is very repetitive, the edginess of it is sick af. Being an anime dude with two guns and a coffin mega gun on your back looks cool af. The 100% achievement experience was painful as all hell, you have to go through every one of the 31 stages a minimum of three times to get the achievement. It took me about 32 hours to complete everything, but those 32 hours felt like 8 weeks of mind-numbing brain melt.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Score: 4/10 (1) Trash (2) Horrible (3) Very Bad (4) Bad (5) Average (6) Fine (7) Good (8) Very Good (9) Great (10) Master Piece I went into Gungrave G.O.R.E completely blind. I didn’t know the PS2 games, I didn’t know the anime, and from the first minutes it’s obvious the game assumes you already understand this universe. The story jumps straight into events without properly building context for new players. It briefly explains who Grave is and who the enemies are, but the pacing is extremely…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This feels like an off brand version of DMC. It isn't a great game but if you can get it in the sale its probably worth it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got this on sale, and this was easily the best 4 dollars i've ever spent. If you're a fan of classic action games, definitely pick this one up on discount. Gameplay: This game feels like if you took just the shooting out of Devil May Cry, and combined it with the balls to the wall encounter shenanigans of Ninja Gaiden 2. While it doesn't quite live up to either its worth noting there's some familiarity here for fans of either of those games. Shooting is sublime, there's lots of it,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I do not recommend Gungrave G.O.R.E. I do not know who has the rights now, but I bought this game to encourage them to make more Gungrave games, or at least port the original to Steam. Unfortunately, this game has an identity crisis and suffers from a lot of maladies I did not encounter in the PS2 cult classic: Clearly repurposed, early concept open-world maps leading to awkward stage transitions: too many empty rooms and corridors to nowhere—a fatal flaw in a Gungrave game where chaining…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It runs like ass, the late enemies are annoying, voice acting sucks and the game overall is extremely jank 10/10 I love it chefs kiss
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A stylish looking game that is as thin as a paper. The core gameplay loop doesn't change throughout the whole game from start to finish. Mow down dozens of enemies, launch a few ultimates here and there, and the stage is abruptly complete. There are 31 small, linear stages. You can complete each one in about 4-7 minutes (more or less). Occasional boss encounters are easy and not that exciting. The voice acting/writing fluctuates between bad and mediocre. The story... well... imagine…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i don't know a whole lot about this other than it's basically a modern day PS2 game and canonically in the Trigun universe: GUNGRAVE G.O.R.E begins TONIGHT @ twitch.tv/addark !! as the name implies, expect a fair bit o violence (also got a backup prepped in case my PC can't handle this lol)
neutral · AI labelView post →Yes its not a perfect game. But tell me though is there any other game like Gungrave G.O.R.E. in the current generation? Whatever chances we had of getting good games have been ruined by softies and youtubers who have a penchant for calling everything masculine and that has depth or substance as EDGY. To them even the original Matrix and Neo is Edgy. Masculinity is Edgy to them, because they don't have it. Humor? Humor is alien to them. These softies wake up every day to find stuff they can…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The surprising thing about Gungrave is how much better the anime was than the game it was made to market. You should give the anime a watch if you haven't, although odds are the anime might be the only reason you're playing these games. Gungrave and Overdose were PS2 games that were very simple and mindless. Think Contra but with no difficulty. GORE gives you some power ups and variety, but really it's the same game from the PS2 era with updated graphics. The games weren't great back in the…

This game offers a fun from a long forgotten era of older PS2 and PS3 games. All combat, quirky dialogue and cutscenes, and a story that takes the backburner before the action... this game is very fun and enjoyable. Honestly, this is my first introduction into the Gungrave series. I wasn't even aware of the prior games, and because of the silly dialogue, cool gameplay, and some plot, I am…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Plays like a PS2-era game. Feels awesome to obliterate hordes of enemies. You can unlock Brandon Heat from the anime.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Recommended at 5 dollars. NOT FULL PRICE. This game is straight up a brain off shoot-em-up action game where you just shoot stuff as you progress through levels and just dominate everyone and it’s fun as hell even though it’s also kinda trash. The shooting and combos feel awesome, you get that over the top arcade chaos where enemies fly everywhere and the screen just turns into bullets and gore, and that part never really gets old. But man everything else is rough, the story makes zero…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →These are some of the worst controls I have ever seen in an action game. 99% of the combat is you having to mash RIGHT TRIGGER(!) over and over without any ability to rebind it to a more reasonable button.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fantastic experience on the Steam Deck. Before I go further, I'm sure that there are multiple ways to experience this game because it's more brilliant than I think most people will ever give it credit for. You can play with a controller, utilize the auto lock system, and treat it like an action game, I'm sure there is a play style that will benefit from mouse and keyboard and a high accuracy build, because it certainly isn't character action, but played with the controller it's still an…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm so happy games like this can still be made. Feels and plays like a Hidden Gem during the PS2 Era. Dumb fun. If you love Obscure PS2 games, Pick this up, you will love it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bought it on sale, and it won't start. Upon reading up on issues people have, it apparently crashes often due to bad optimization for UE. I can't even get it to load to where I can play.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →🐲STREAM INCOMING🐲 Look man, I'm a fan of shit like Gungrave G.O.R.E and E.Y.E: Divine Cybermancy, this game getting dogged on online for its quality doesn't phase me in the slightest, I'm going in. positive · AI labelView post →For all effects and purposes, this is a bad game. Yet, I had fun from beginning to end. Graphics are subpar. Character models range from passable to terrible. Animations are so stiff they're laughable. Level design is just corridors and rooms. Stages are all similar. The few gimmicks like an elevator are terrible. Buildings make absolutely no logical sense. Audio design forgot to add audio. Sound FX sometimes don't correspond to what's happening. Music is actually good, when you can hear it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good mindless fun. Voice acting and writing is garbage tier but it's so bad it's good. Play with English voices for a good laugh. Combat is fairly well done and is not too challenging even on the Hard difficulty.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Just finished Gungrave G.O.R.E and absolutely loved it. Perfect 6/10 game
positive · AI labelView post →Just finished Gungrave G.O.R.E. I didnt even know that was the final boss, I thought it was a mini boss before the actual final stage. Not as good as the OG game, but it was a fun time waster.
neutral · AI labelView post →If you only want to hear the noise of a gun, a girl screaming in your ear obvius things and make some special moves, over and over again. This is your game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It starts cool. but actually finishing it is a slog. It's not hard at all it's super easy and boring to play. There's no reason to use anything except the guns and maybe 1 or 2 skills if that. It gets points for style but there's no substance.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game feels like a huge throwback to the early - mid 2000's (in a good way). Its almost like a "beat-em-up" with guns and special abilities. I like the simplicity and just the focus on combat and fun. its non-stop action and very arcade like, it does not have bloat, and collectathons, its just an action combat game in a more linear fashion. its great fun especially if you can get it on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →BEST GAME OF ALL TIME!!!!!! P.S I'm a Gungrave Fanboy.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not terrible, def worth a shot when on sale if you like shoot-em up type games. The cut scenes were dope. Difficulty felt kinda easy.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Something I really love about Gungrave G.O.R.E is outside of being a fun third person arcade shooter game but it's also a fun turn you're brain off and shoot stuff while looking cool with very simple gameplay.
positive · AI labelView post →This is a fine example of game where lots of stupid ideas put together but executed really well which results: Combat is fun, especially once you’ve unlocked all the abilities and characters. The gameplay is just series of hallways with various mobs, definitely can be repetitive. That’s the whole point of mindless game. Why would expect a story from ridiculous over the top action game? It’s just pure adrenaline button smashing duh 100% achievements isn’t hard and didn’t take long time. Still…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Gungrave promised stylish action and over-the-top violence, but delivered a repetitive and clunky mess. The combat system is shallow and unresponsive, and the level design is uninspired and linear. The story is a generic revenge plot that fails to engage. While the visuals are decent, the game's technical performance is plagued by frame rate drops and glitches. If you're looking for a satisfying third-person shooter, look elsewhere. Gungrave is a disappointment that fails to live up to its…

First off, there's so much to love: the arcade score-chasing gameplay; plethora of skills to acquire, the ability to kick a giant rocket at your enemies, and a jiggly-jawed skull in your UI that yells "Woo-Hoo-Hoo!" when you do something cool. But sooner-or-later, you'll find that that red-eyed skeleton is having much more fun than you are playing Gungrave GORE. positive · AI labelView post →This is a good game with some nice style. It does what it says on the box. You are just blowing up everything in your path with stylish gun-fu. The sound track is pretty good at times. I'm playing on easy, and having a good time with it. If you want good visuals, sound and a sort of relaxing time of it, not too much thinking this is great.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are a lot of problems with this game. Level designs are repetitive, enemies are repetitive, hell even gameplay in general is very repetitive. The storyline leaves much to be desired and the overall game lacks polish and quality control. Transitions from one level to the next are jarring and immersion-breaking. Cutscenes look nice but are poorly written and executed. Voice acting is ♥♥♥♥, writing is ♥♥♥♥, and the whole game sucks ass in a way I've never seen before. Yet somehow it's…
