What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 235 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (30,279 of 33,495 positive).
Many compare it favorably to its sequel, citing better balance and teamwork. [1][2][3]

only players left playing are super toxic and bossy to new players

helldiver but it actually respect your time instead of 500 warbonds slop and massive ego trip dev that think they know everything but only keep making the game worse

Highly recommended to check out HD1 for its high skill ceiling, and cohesive teamplay. HD1 is an older game, but it has aged like fine wine in all honesty. Coming from HD2 during a buggy period and frustrating progress of the Galactic War. HD1 has given me everything I was wishing for from HD2. - Encouraged team play with appropiate team work mechanics. (Enemy baiting, team get ups, healing, shared screen) - Stable …

the only Arrowhead game i can recommend in good faith. genuinely fun, MO's are decided by players, the progression is fun and the gameplay is addictive (in a good way.) Stratagems and weapons are earned by playing all missions on a planet on different difficulties. There are no warbonds, and items in warbonds from HD2 are free. bugs are nonexistent. there are more enemies, more content, more fun. This is what …

I would like to first point out that this game is NOT Helldivers 2. Helldivers 2 is the direct sequel to this game, and I will be comparing it to HD2 for that reason. However HD1 and HD2 are VERY different games. Camera: The camera is shared between all the players with it being centered between them. To move, all the players must move at once. You cannot go outside the cameras sight, unless you are downed for some …

87% of the 235 Steam reviewers we collected recommend HELLDIVERS™ Dive Harder Edition. The complaint that keeps coming up: shared camera restricts movement. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Helldivers received "generally favorable" reviews from critics, according to the review aggregator website Metacritic. In Japan, where the game was ported for release on March 5, 2015, Famitsu gave it a score of two eights, one seven, and one eight for a total of 31 out of 40. IGN played the demo version of Helldivers at the 2013 Gamescom, and reviewed the demo positively. Game Informer also gave the demo a positive rating, commenting that it "isn't easy, but this throwback to classic top down shooters is still a good time". GameSpot's reviewer Cameron Woolsey noted that the PlayStation 4 version has "fantastic cooperative action" but "missions and story are lacking". IGN said of the same…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A shockingly alive game considering its age and the sequel. Vastly different from Helldivers 2, but better in some ways honestly. If you like top-down satirical shooters, this is the game for you.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wow! So this is what it's like to play a Helldivers game that isn't a buggy mess. Looking forward to unlocking weapons that are nerfed to oblivion.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Such a beautiful and simple game, gameplay full of build variety that are all powerful against all factions, artstyle is endearing and stylized. Really thankful to Arrowhead for not desecrating such a unique pve game! Imagine if it had a sequel that tried to put itself above this as a complex tactical milsim with live service elements, guns that don't work because "realism" and most dreadful of all, being untested by its own developers leaving it littered with 50 bugs since launch of the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Only Helldiver game that doesnt crash 6 times in a row at start up. Arrowhead, fix your sequal

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'll admit it! I only heard of this game because of Helldivers 2 and the only reason why I got this game is because it seemed more likely to run on my potato than the second game. But hey! I ended up getting one of my most favorite top down shooter games! So score! Or, well, I don't think I've played any other top down shooter games and I definitely haven't played another game that contained 3 separate enemy factions that each contained 15 levels of difficulty, a couple varied enemy types, and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't let the shared camera deceive you. It's a polished and light game. There's always someone to join in your mission, but it's fun to play solo too, at your own pace. FOR LIBERTY!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I may not be able to play Helldivers 2 with such a crappy laptop. But i can still play the first game any time, For Super Earth and For Democracy!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →think of it like Helldivers 2 mini you can play with your friends locally, has most of the features Helldivers 2 has, condensed in smaller maps, smaller missions and from a top down perspective, so yeah friendly fire is much more likely that being said, get it to play it with friends, the solo experience is quite miserable and difficult also runs super well on the steam deck
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Funny how every grievance I have with HD2 design wise from the weapons not really feeling or looking science fictiony enough (seriously the amount of guns in 2 that are just artstation illustrator portfolio assault rifles shotguns & pistols compared to 1's stronger classic sci fi leaning, it's like super earth regressed massively despite flavour text saying they got a lot of the illuminates tech tree after the first game. Curse of being a 2020's game where having a good artstyle is illegal now…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun game especially after playing HD2. Would recommend trying out.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cute little tactical game that won't brick your system like it's successor.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolute blast to play, especially with friends. Compared to its sequel, which is constantly being sabotaged by Arrowhead, this game actually offers powerful weapons, mechs that don't instantly implode from the first rocket, stackable stratagems, non-tarded armor system, upgrade system for weapons/stratagems, no micro-transactions, constantly changing planets for variety, actual teamplay, short war campaign that restarts and many more. The only reason this game is not as popular is because it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Top notch co-op shooter with plenty of in depth missions and a satisfying number of weapons top choose from. Very satisfying once the use of the controller becomes second nature. It's also very easy on the eye, which makes it even more engaging.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played the game back at launch on Playstation for hundreds of hours and loved it to death. Replaying this game again a decade later it still holds up fantastically. I'd say the price is a little steep but I got it on a really big sale Player base is still active enough for your squad to fill up within 5 minutes of a mission at the time of review. Things that didn't carry over to the sequel shine bright, infinite reinforcements, medic/support roles, deeper cooperation, non changing balence and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game, unlike HD2, is pretty balanced and extremely fun :]
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Like a typical Steam guy, I saved this game for later. After playing HD2 for many hours, I decided to give it a try. And what a surprise! It's an excellent game, and many of HD2's mechanics are present in this one. For Super Earth! 10/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's old, but, and this is a big but, it has good bones and has already reached its endgoal unlike Helldivers 2. That's the benefit to playing an old game like this, you know its not going to change and ruin how you like to play. However, I would still recommend grabbing it at a discount, as this is of course, an old game with a low player count. Anyway, have fun; not much else to say.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"I have no money but i must spread democracy." Truly an underrated amazing game, i highly recommend. I'd buy the hd2 full democracy experience but the 46 cents in my wallet are barely holding themselves together. Thanks to my amazing friend for gifting me this game! 10/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was the superior Helldivers, because it had a unique COOP approach that demanded teamwork and synergy. The new one is play alone together style stuff. That being said, binding arbitration? Big nope there. It's one big screw job to consumers. It's very anti-consumer and the legal suppression is not welcome or wanted. It's novel you put in an opt out, but it's clear you made it as prohibitive as possible. Send in real mail, give you tons of personal information, a strict timeframe, it's…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Would love to play this more, however forcing a split screen like gameplay when we're not even using the same PC is a deal breaker for me
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Is genuainely better than the second game in many ways despite being a top-down shooter <3
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →notice how this game has such a good positive review ratio, theirs a good reason to that because this has gotten to be one of the most in depth and detailed twin-stick shooter game in the whole genre, you are given the weapons and tools to fight off the massive armies that are the opposing factions in this starship trooper like universe, its funny and fun you are very powerful but just like what I would imagine in a real life scenario of war one little mistake and youre dead. Current AH dev…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Its a very little player base, which is sad because this game is great, but everybody helps each other. I am coming to like this one better than the sequel.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I started with Helldivers 2 and decided to pick this up on a whim when it went on sale. After sinking a good number of hours into it, I can honestly say it's one of the best values I've found for the price. For fans of Helldivers 2, this game offers a fantastic opportunity to experience where it all began while gaining a deeper appreciation for the glorious history of our galaxy and the countless brave Helldivers who willingly sacrifice themselves every day to ensure peace, prosperity,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Genuinely love this gameplay a lot, maybe even prefer it over HD2's Third Person split up view, but hey both games are good!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I thought that sharing a screen with strangers would be miserable. This is the most fun I have had playing a video game in a while.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I cant help but feel the new AH team really dropped the ball with helldivers 2 when the formula for long term success was right here in HD1. The fact that people still regularly play HD1 is all the proof you need that this is a truly special game. AH please lock in and stop being autistic you literally have the answers to the puzzle and it was given to you a decade ago.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I cant believe it took me this long to try out HD1... it's top down fun, unique gameplay elements encourages team play while still being solo viable. quick, variable, entertaining, definitely worth it + the dlc, it's just simply fun.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →New to the game rn but so far it's pretty fun to play If i had the pc and the money i'd buy helldivers 2 as well
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish I knew about this game years ago. Its pretty fun and I'm currently on a quest for 100% achievement completion. It'll be a while since some achievements are hard and require the community.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Runs smooth on android device via Gamehub, pretty fun to play
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this game during the Autumn sale and the only thing better than the game is the community of players that play it. I'm enjoying the idea of spending many more hours spreading DEMOCARCY and LIBERTY across the galaxy for Super Earth with my awesome hellbrothers and hellsisters.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Peak. If there is one word to describe this game with, it’s PEAK. The movement is flawless, the graphics aged well for an isometric game, and the lore is just absolute cinema. I bought it because this was the only game of the series I could afford and which my PC could run, but it’s great for new players and fans of the sequel equally! Oh and don’t forget, Super Earth is innocent, Managed Democracy is good, and there is no war with the Illuminate.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Crikey - what a game Started playing HD1 as I was burn't out playing HD2 and wanted to see where all of it started. What I didn't expect was a much more co-operative experience in HD1! Even after all this time, there is a steady stream of players always online with games to drop into. There is an awesome discord group as well still willing to offer tips, advice, and help if you need a few extra players for some of the harder difficulties. All in all, an ABSOLUTE BARGAIN of a game if you can…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I play Helldivers 2 more, but imo, this is the better designed game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Disregard my hours played. I have dozens of hours on this game from years ago on the PS4 with my ex-girlfriend. We loved this game. This and Gauntlet were our go-to games. I played HD2 since launch. I was a Malevelon Creek veteran. That game was so good back then. Unfortunately, because AH's terrible balancing decisions and greed (they will nerf old weapons just to incentivize players to buy the new Warbonds that will inevitably become meta) HD2 was ruined. The OG eruptor was SO much fun in…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a good co-op shooter, fun both with friends and randoms! I'd recommend buying the full version when it's on sale (it goes on sale relatively often)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Helldivers may not look that spectacular, but it certainly plays that way. A hardcore shoot 'em up that rewards tactical thinking and teamwork. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3616626785
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →best game for those who prefer the classics HD2 is also good but in my opinion HD1 is way WAY more funner
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →fun combat and a great community
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The parallels between HELLDIVERS (2015) and one of my favorite games, Section 8 (2009), are so great I need to make a list: Both games have: -Science fiction setting with a theme of fighting for justice. Satirically in HELLDIVERS with the ubiquitous "pro-democracy/freedom/justice" taunts -Mechs, tanks, and of course jet packs! -Repair tool (Section 8), known as REP-80 (HELLDIVERS). Super useful to heal literally everything, from players to vehicles to turrets. sadly, you can't heal yourself in…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Might be a top contender for best local co-op game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My first experience with Helldivers was the second game, and I enjoyed it for a while. But frankly, this one is better
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →only players left playing are super toxic and bossy to new players
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This Helldivers game is really great, but the servers aren't as active as they used to be. Recommended. 8.5/10.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This Ministry of truth experience is a great re-creation of the first galactic war. Matches up to my great great grandfathers stories greatly
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Me and my girl got addicted to this quick. It's got beautiful landscapes, AWESOME drop-in split-screen with any kind of controller or keyboard while playing online, and runs perfectly under Proton!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →THE topdown coop shooter. The only thing I'd say was a mistake: putting the all terrain boots in the paid DLC, those things are essential. Loved it back in 2017, still do in 2025. If you are looking for a Co-op game, HELLDIVERS is the game to get.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is still active, and your lobby will be full in about 5 minutes. At the start and on high difficulties, the game gets kind of hard to play, so I recommend buying it with your friends.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The top down co-op gameplay is chaotic and really fun, friendly fire included.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Helldivers. The twin stick shooter from 2015 still holds up very well in 2025-2026. Although the steam community is only about 3-400 enlisted helldivers it still goes strong with little to no hostility or negativity. Helldivers 1 differs from its 2024 released sequel and as someone who found this game purely because i played HD2 first i have thoroughly enjoyed my time playing this game. Its camera movement being more restrictive leads me to think and believe that HD1 is VERY co-op…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Stalwart is a primary as it should be here, not sure why they made it and everything we own ass in helldivers 2 lol
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game but DON'T BUY IT. If you buy it you're supporting Arrowhead and Arrowhead have shown themselves to be actually braindead with their management of HD2. PIRATE IT INSTEAD. F!ck Arrowhead. Enjoy the Helldivers game they made that is ACTUALLY FUN. Now with 100% LESS RAGDOLLS and CONSTANT NERFS because they don't update this game. (Thank god.)
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Player base sucks, host kicked all players after full mission and I lost all rewards because of it. Don't waste your time. If your playing with friends only than buy it, any other reason don't.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is the best; it can be frustrating sure. But when you're with people, it's SO FUN MAN! I came from the PS Vita version, and it feels so good to be back.
