What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 181 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (883 of 1,043 positive).
Many players praise the game's unique blend of Souls-like, roguelike, and ARPG elements. [1][2][3] Some reviewers complain about the game being abandoned by developers with no updates. [4][5][6] Several players note the high difficulty and janky mechanics as divisive. [7][8][9]

Abandoned. Devs released a nothing patch so the game won't have "last updated" show over a year ago.

Was this game made just for me? Seriously, it feels like this developer invaded my dreams and then created the perfect combination of games I love. It has no right being as good as it is. The best way to sum it up: Dark Souls 1 + Diablo + Halls of Torment mixed with Hardcore (1 life) and roguelike/roguelite elements. Also, they implemented a genius way to circumvent item bloat - when you pick up a new item, they ask …

Let me start this by saying I love the game, but would not recommend it to most people. I will recommend it to those who can handle jank and like slow, tedious experiences. This game is janky. Rough. I can see the seams between assets. Sound effects cut out when you get near the end of the game. Some things even lack sound. Encounters and balance goes from interesting and brutally fair to boring and grindy. Many …

Neutral Rating. 65 good, 35 thumbs down. Pros: --Souls-like feel is pretty good. Very moody but kind of its own vibe. hard to explain. -- As an old-school gamer I love my isometric games, so its a little bit new and little old. I don't mind the castle aspect and not having a true open world (we'll talk about that). -- Gameplay is most definitely easy to play, hard to master. There isn't anything all that complex to …

it's like an ARPG + Soulslike + Roguelike. Definitely fun once you get a hang of it. I hope they rebalance some of the items, or let some scale with you. Can't wait for the full release!

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The camera moves constantly, weather you like it or not, constantly changing angles sometimes hiding enemies, making you nauseous and currently there is no way of turning it off.

neutral · AI labelView post →Great game that's been abandoned. If you're ok with an incomplete game, then it has plenty of fun to offer. Still, why support a Dev that takes the money and runs?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dead game, Devs gave up on it. While they were active they did not spend time fixing bugs and game issues like terrible targeting, camera is crap, sound is crap from day 1, game balancing and spent their time too slowly adding in some content, basically they had no internal road map or vision or any idea what to do as a good dev team would.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Remove dying from fall damage and this changes to a positive review. I get the desire to be similar to Dark Souls, but this is a Roguelite, and Dark Souls isn't. You don't get to just "respawn" if you die from a random fall. You're permanently dead and have to make a new character. That's a horrible decision for a Roguelite, bottom line. Other than that, phenomenal game.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a great "proof of concept", but doesn't have enough content to call it a game. I basically finished all content in 8 hours. Zero updates and posts from devs in half a year. So seems to be abandoned.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Forced Data collection or you can't play? WTH! Such a disappointing outcome.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's an interesting roguelite Diablo X Soulslike, but it needs a lot of work. Besides fixing the bugs, the devs really need to work on optimization, camera and especially the movement + hit boxes. Otherwise this won't be a pleasant experience for anyone. Everything else is okay. If they'll update this then I'll change my score. For now go watch a Nicolas Cage movie or something.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I feel the game has gotten way more buggy lately. I've played a lot of it (steam hours didn't update but I got around 7h in by the time I am writing this, steam says 3h) and the more I play, the jankier it gets. There's a constant lag that happens once you take too long to finish a run. The frames remain stable, but the movement and attack speed plummet to hell. The devote points don't work - at least not for the positive effects, just for the negative ones. So there's 0 interest in getting…

neutral · AI labelView post →Someone I follow on Instagram recommended Heretical Fishing by Haylock Jobson and I am enjoying it SO MUCH. Aussie bloke gets trapped in what appears to be a video game and slowly starts an accidental revolution despite just wanting to fish. Hilarious, with cosy vibes & animal sidekicks.
neutral · AI labelView post →Needs a lot of balancing. Stop playing after getting killed in an area where there are a dozen enemies on roof tops throwing molotov's with unlimited range and targeting them is next to impossible. Not sure if devs play their game often. There are other areas like this in the game. Not sure what the reason is for giving enemy units unlimited range, it's just annoying .
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Replay value on this game is top notch. Every run you get farther and unlock more things.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sometimes I enjoy composing something heavier with the guitar. I made this for a Jam game called Heretical.
neutral · AI labelView post →There is an incredible game here; a hybrid ARPG with roguelike horde survival upgrade mechanics. I adore the concept and it plays mostly very well… BUT I can’t play it in its current state. The camera perspective shift makes me literally nauseous. It doesn’t look good, it doesn’t feel good and it makes playing the game a physical chore. Bizarre choice from the devs. For some reason, the character’s frame rate seems much lower than the rest of the game. Movement seems jerky vs a smooth…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Why's every ARPG-style game have to be a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ roguelite? I just want another game I can really develop a character in, but if I die then I just don't. So stupid. We have enough of exactly this game already.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Heretical Halation was fixed in yesterday's update; it looks correct in the API and in game now. Heretical Halation: destinyemblemcollector.com/emblem?id=30...
neutral · AI labelView post →Was very exited for this titel but it really let me down. The movement is horrible and soemtimes you glitch of tthe cliff when your still on the path and losing a game because of this just sucks. Cannot reccomend.Maybe if it was 1 dollar give it a try else its just a waste of your money
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Awesome game, had so much fun with it! Even in its current state, I think it could count as a full game, so I don't really understand why people leave negative reviews. Yes, it has some minor, annoying parts, but who cares if 99% of the game is already fun. People also complain like it's a dead game, while every trimester there is an update. Yes, communication is a bit bad, e.g. the roadmap on the page is outdated, it still mentions a 2025 Q3 milestone not met, so it could feel like the game is…

On paper, it sounded cool, but the whole medieval look is not my style. I'm a responsible person, even if I'm not obligated to review it. It was a "play and decide" after all. So, I started to play it to test the waters. The first run or as it's called in game, "crossing"…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cons: I suspect character descriptions were AI generated Pros: holy cows the game is skill based. Yeah, the first three hours aren't giving a good enough impression of what this game has in store and I think a lot of people will get a refund because of how little content the game seems to have. It's sad, because heretical is a true to it's spirit soulslike that had let me relive the experience of learning enemy patterns and getting gud, and it's maps are genuinely awesome and interconnected.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Deliberately obtuse with no point. There's a game I want to play here, but it is hidden between switches and levers that have no use other than to hide the game I want to play.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Horrendous weightless, in sludge style combat. Somehow has huge frame dips and performance issues.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved the game at first, but then the difficulty ramps up way too much too quickly. I found the game more frustrating than a souls game and I'm quite good at those. This one was too frustrating for me and I'm not going to play it anymore. Hard to recommend.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved the game I think its good and worth the investment. but after 75% of the play through. Then the goals became just too cumbersome and not enjoyable at all. Really this game needs a bit of polish and balance.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →EDIT 4 Surprise update that added... NO PLAY ABLE CONTENT. Alleged optimization 6 months after last patch. So maybe not technically abandonware? But probably still is. EDIT 3: Game is likely abandonware no updates or communication for at least 3 months now. A roguelike with slow gameplay, and slow progression, is not fun. If the developer wants to lean hard into souls-like mechanics then the controls should be smoother and tighter. Less RNG for runs over all. If the developer wants to lean…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Keybinds do not work or get super glitchy. Rebinding arrow keys not possible just randomly assigns a key to them.

neutral · AI labelView post →The progression is too slow in this game. I don't have 18 hours a day to grind to level up. I can only play a couple hours a day. I have hundreds of other games to play that feel more rewarding and fun to play. I like the game, I just wish it would progress my level faster so I could feel like I'm making some progress in the limited amount of time I have to play.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Heretical really surprised me in a good way. I was expecting a linear, normal roguelike with all that comes with that genre. Instead I get a Souls inspired roguelike with unlockable shortcuts and some really nice RPG elements that makes it all the more unique. The art style just adds to everything, love it. The game is in early access as of writing this review and I wish the developers the best and I can't wait for a full release. There are multiple characters that you can play with, each…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the game is good and I recommend it BUT oh - my - effin - god, it is SO HARD it actually humiliates me. I can't beat more than 3 or 4 bosses, not even giving myself unlimited gold and maxing out my character and gear at the start of a run... insane. I'll wait for people's playthoughs on Youtube and build guides. Maybe at some point I'll figure out how am I supposed to play
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →its good, lots of replay with the prophecies, very well thought out map, frustrating combat at first but soon your rocking bodies
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would actually recommend this game if it weren't for the insanely bad camera and movement. I mean seriously, a game where you can walk off a cliff and die, ending your run, and the camera is allowed to just rotate however it pleases with no player control? Get out of here.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game seems to be abandoned from what other people have said, though there's still a good amount of content to enjoy. I managed to beat it in around 10 hours across about 15 runs and beat all 7 bosses. There's shortcuts like in Dark Souls but they kinda feel useless except to backtrack later in the game when you need to go find healing. If I try to use them to skip ahead to say the 5th boss then I'm just not strong enough to survive. Once you finish the tutorial area there's no checkpoints, if…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game would be fun, but falling off ledges while dodging a fr*ggin Boss ?? No thanks. The Rest of the Game seems vvery good.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game. I wish they would let you keep your gear after defeating the campaign instead of starting over with nothing. As many have said the random camera movement is annoying as hell. The archer and beast tamer class are insanely overpowered compared to the knight, mage, and barbarian class, warlock class seems useless. I don't like random loot, if they change anything I wish it was this... even if I have to save up to buy the gear I want make it that. Overall great game with 3-4 bigger…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →a big "RASBERRY". dying to get anywhere? to open new char, classes? pure crap in my opinion. getting stuck on terrain camera angle hiding stuff enemies seem to have longer range than you slow movement limited dash rng on what you find and only a choice in what to keep? different builds with rng? or just make it a poor mans brotatoe. bah not a good start to this year just my opinion
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this used to be fun, but they turned it in to ♥♥♥♥ and far from fun
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I didnt expect to get nearly 12 hours of this, really well design rouge-lite with awesome meta progression via prophecies. Combat is good, nothing amazing mind you, but its good enough to keep you engaged. I gotta say I dont like melee characters that much. Life steal is very limited - to the point where you might not even bother with it. Ranged is the play here and wildheart might be little bit broken with certain item combinations(4k per crit with Heartseeker which takes like 25% of EA final…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There is potential here as a soulslite, but the locked animations are a deal breaker on how the game feels to play. At a bare minimum at the design level, the dash needs to break animations in order for this to be worth the time investment. Half the skills dont seem to work either. This is very problematic for melee builds, which are already several orders of magnitude worse than ranged ones before you consider the jank and bugs. As it stands, this is a kind of mid soulslite/roguelite in a…
