What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 153 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (3,825 of 4,329 positive).
Players consider it a classic and one of the best in the series, often comparing it favorably to Heroes III. [1][2][3][4] Some reviewers note technical issues like poor optimization, bugs, and a problematic Steam port lacking expansions. [5][6][7] The game is praised for its nostalgic value, engaging campaigns, and strategic depth despite dated graphics. [8][9][10]

Generally a good game that ticks off all nostalgic check boxes for me. However, lags & optimization issues aside, this port is so bad that I had to do some research on how to activate and use the cheat console in order to debug 2 campaigns that got stuck and thus didn't progress with the respective story, making it otherwise impossible to finish the missions. Also, what the heck is that new EULA that forced me to …

AI cheats. Graphics aged like milk. Plot? Something-something demons, skeletons and betrayal—whatever. Every third week is “Week of the Random Nonsense”and the game refuses to explain what that actually means. Yet somehow, at 3 a.m., you're still clicking “next turn”. 10/10. Strategy is an illusion, suffering is real.

As the first fully 3D installment in the series, it offers players an immersive fantasy world filled with intricate tactical battles, exploration, and resource management. I played it a lot as a kid and I still consider it one of my favorite and best Heroes games, alongside Heroes III. I highly recommend it, and it’s still absolutely worth playing

Best HoMM game ever made. Ignore the deluded HoMMIII fans, this game nukes both HoMMIII and HoMMII from orbit.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't buy this version of the game, it only has the base game without any of the content from the expansions. Instead, get HoMM5: Tribes of the East here on Steam or HoMM5 Complete on GOG. Those versions have both expansions and all the content from them, with just one exception: Tribes of the East on Steam doesn't have the campaigns from the base game and the Hammers of Fate expansion, but you can re-add them with the MMH 5.5 mod.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I’m a huge fan of Heroes of Might and Magic III. I’ve played it for literally tens of thousands of hours at different stages of my life. It’s not just a game. Heroes III shaped my understanding of strategy, gameplay, and even had a real impact on who I am and how I see the world. That’s why it’s extremely hard for me to fairly judge Heroes V. On one hand, it’s a continuation of the series and a spiritual successor, but on the other, it’s a completely different experience. Heroes V has its…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still the greatest Heroes of Might and Magic game all these years later. While there are a few things that heroes 6 and 7 does better, this is the games that feels the best to play (at least for someone, who only plays the campaign. Having one story throughout works much better than having a series of campaigns that can be played in any order and allows for more variety in maptypes and by extension length with only a few truly tedious maps and some minor bugs here and there. Down/Negatives…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great all time classic strategy game I used to be waaay too dumb as a kid to understand it - that was 16 years ago.. Now its very enjoyable
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It took me 19 years but I finally finished the campaign. (For reference : I had the CD, and when CD players vanished from computers, I bought it on Steam. I bought this game two times, this is how much I love it.)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →EULA should pop up in the moment when you press BUY button
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is classic already. Second best edition of HOMM series. Second only to the glory of HOMM3. Effectively as good as it gets.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nostalgia. No but in all honesty - a good game. Apart from a weird colour in campaign 5-5 haven't encountered any bugs or anything. Only thing - but it's easily fixable - you have to limit the fps. Cuz during one extra long cutscene it went into like 600+ and my gpu suddenly wanted to boil water :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would rather sand my balls on a belt grinder then play this game ever again 10/10 would recommend

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let's address the good, the bad and the ugly. THE GOOD: ■ The art is gorgeous. ■ There is a great variety in units, spells, etc. ■ The story unfolds gradually and from various perspectives. ■ The whole game feels like one big board game with fun rules and mechanics. THE BAD: ■ The story is anything but engaging; you can't like most of the characters. They range from forgettable to downright annoying. The writing is hasty and all over the place. I couldn't wait to finish and walk outside to…

positive · AI labelView post →Great classic which runs great even on Windows 11. And you can in fact enable Vsync.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nostalgia at its absolute finest. Brian Approves.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Now that I'm done with Leagues, its time to play more stuff. Might visit some Stellaris, back to FFXIV for a bit, some Genshin/HSR, maybe some Retail/Cata WoW. Been eyeballing Harvestella and Warcraft II, Heroes of Might & Magic V, Avorion, Dark Messiah, Sins of a Solar Empire... There's so many lol
neutral · AI labelView post →This is a great game thats simply a classic.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →nowhere near as good as homm 3. idiotic unit designs and campaign is 0/10
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Arrow keys are used to scroll rather than WASD, & keys are not re-bindable.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love games like Civilization, Age of Empires, Age of Wonders, and all the other HOMM-games as well. I like to play the campaigns because I can see the amazing developments of my main hero, and because I get to know the story behind the game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Clunky and bad graphics. After Heroes 3 I expected more out of 5.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Incredible strategy game, and my personal favourite. I played this and HoMM3 when I was younger with my parents, and now that I can actually understand what's happening it's steadily become one of my favourite games. Aside from the excellent visuals and soundtrack, the actual gameplay is very fun and playing different factions against different people is always a good time. The campaign is a lot of good fun too, with a pretty decent plot and engaging missions. Overall, way better than its…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of my earliest memories is playing with wooden blocks with my parents playing HOMM V next to me. Nothing beats looking up from building your castle to seeing the Haven Castle flyby and the heavenly chorus crashing through the computer speakers. Endless replay featuring my favorite fantasy soap opera ever <3
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Needs a lot of thinking and a lot of strategy, i find this game to really help me in my problem solving too
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Despite being an old game it still has beautiful graphics and music. Especially i like Sylvan town and it's creatures.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game! Probably the best one in the series.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →ubislop ruined this franchise
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bugged. Can not play. Basically seems like waste of money
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This classic from the HoMM series of games is very popular, along with HoMM II and of course at the pinnacle, HoMM III. It is not at all surprising that HoMM Olden Era is taking inspiration from these two games. One word of warning about this one though: necromancy is a bit overpowered here. If you play solo, that is not such a bad thing ;)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game of my childhood. Simply amazing. Grateful for all the great memories.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Best game ever made. Absolute cinema peak, you do not udnerstand how much i love this game its so good.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best game of my childhood, sometimes i replay this game now and then out of nostalgia and i can say that it is still playable, the only thing that is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is the camera but other than that it is a wonderfull game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun with lots of replay value. Well worth your time.

positive · AI labelView post →Heroes of Might and Magic V is still one of my favorite turn-based strategy games. The combination of exploration, city building, resource management, and tactical battles makes every campaign feel rewarding. The art style and atmosphere have aged surprisingly well, and there’s a great variety of factions, creatures, spells, and strategies to experiment with. Battles are especially satisfying once you start learning how to make the most of your units and abilities. It’s not perfect, but…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →bugged version. ubisoft stocks down for a reason. unplayable. profiles and settings don't save
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a lot of fun at first, but it becomes incredibly tedious over time. I love the core concept, and I genuinely enjoyed the earlier campaigns. By the time I reached Zehir and the Academy campaign, though, I realized I wasn’t having fun anymore. The game had become a massive time sink. The biggest problem is how poorly the mission objectives are explained. The game often gives you little or no indication of what you should prioritize, which direction you should take, or whether…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been playing this game for over a decade, since I had it on a disk. My play time is much higher than what is shown on Steam. I keep returning to it because it is so satisfying and enjoyable to play. The beauty of the landscape, the gameplay, and all the creatures cannot be understated. The continued storyline and strategic involvement makes it easy to dive in for hours. There are so many different campaigns and characters that you can get in to, whether you want a long term commitment or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is pretty fun. probably the last good HOMM game
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Where to begin... I bought this game because i kept hearing wonders about the 'Might & Magic' franchise, and decided to give it a shot. The game is extremely boring, and many of the game mechanics only makes you ask one question: 'why?' I would not recommend this game, not even on a heavy discount, don't waste your time, there are better alike games like Age of Wonders 3, Disciples 3, and, i don't know, Minesweeper from Windows 3.11
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty fun, I broke the first mission and now I have both castles and thousands of troops
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →game is glitched, arena's do not add stats to the hero (+2 defense or attack) and there are many of them throughout the maps. At the end of each campaign, your heroes will be missing +20 or more points to attack or defense, which would make it way more enjoyable, especially in the final fights. Tried different online solutions, none worked, considering many people having this issue. Played this game in the past, it worked fine, never had this issue.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great fun for many hours.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A Timeless Masterpiece of Might and Magic, Although 3 is great, this one will always have my heart.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yep it's a good HOMM. here comes bulk of areas of improvement. Consider the rest to be fine! + A real move to 3D + the map looks great - But everything feels a bit too small and confused - Battle field units aged badly - Gameplay loop haven't evolved much since HOMM3: - Just follow a round, kill monsters, grab resources.. + Except for few campaigns like with demons where you are tracked and must run away - Building tree isn't revealed. Hard to plan city development - Just like…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Different Heroes of Might and Magic games struggle with different issues. HoMM3 struggles with a clunky UI that's very hard for new players to get used to; HoMM5 fixes this with an intuitive, user-friendly UI. HoMM3 has an underwhelming music score, which HoMM4 improves upon substantially, before HoMM5 frustratingly reverts to a lackluster score. HoMM3 has a wonderful and memorable art style, which is sadly diminished in HoMM4, and then diminished even further in HoMM5 with its switch to full…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →tries to expand upon heroes 3 while keeping the core gameplay and unit upgrade features, obviously not as good as heroes 3 and im not as invested in the storyline but still a good game in its own rights
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →*Heroes of Might and Magic V* will always have a special place in my heart because it was the **very first video game I ever played**. No matter how many modern games I experience, nothing can replace the memories I made with this one. I still remember being completely fascinated by the fantasy world, the different factions, the magical creatures, and the huge battles. At the time, I didn't fully understand every mechanic, but that didn't stop me from spending hours exploring the maps,…
