What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 186 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (1,408 of 1,945 positive).
Players find the game fun and humorous, with a unique cult management concept. [1][2][3] Many reviewers note the game becomes repetitive and slow-paced after a few hours. [4][5][6] Some players criticize the lack of depth and updates, calling it shallow or abandoned. [7][8][9]

I love the idea of this game and love other similar games like Rim World and Prison Architect, but this is too linear and shallow, to the extent that it could be a mod for Rim world. I have played from start to end 2 paths and they play exactly the same, baring some minor cosmetic changes. Given how basic the graphics are I would have expected some more variations in them, more colour options, more style choices etc …

At first it's fun and interesting to learn all the mechanics but after even just 4 hours of playing I had to force myself to keep going as the game turned into a waiting simulator. Because of how unbearably boring it eventually gets I had the game running in the background while doing other things but still only managed to get one ending because it takes a really long time to get to the end. Honestly would not …

Played 17 hours trying to build a peaceful utopia of enlightenment and disco. Instead, my cult leader demanded twelve golden toilets, my followers started worshipping the vending machine, and the PR department accidentally converted the police chief. Half the compound caught fire during morning yoga, but everyone clapped. Now I’m legally a religion and morally bankrupt. 10/10, enlightenment was a tax loophole. Hours …

Surprisingly fun, despite the mixed reviews. I gooned this game pretty hard for a few days. It’s not RimWorld, but for a two-person dev team, it's a solid little management sim. The funky soundtrack even made me want to pick up the Clavinet. My biggest complaints are: Progression can feel slow early on, especially when you're stuck with only “very poor” or “poor” followers for a while. Mood swings in your cultists …

This is one of the games i like to play, but get bored really fast due to all the waiting.. still i give a thumbs up since it's not a bad game and had fun for a few hours. + Artwork / Design is nice + Music is great + I love the customization options for your cult + Good humor + General gameplay is fluid and easy to learn - Balancing of Time, Ressources and Progress is not good - I spend more time with waiting, than …

For me, it's a bit linear for my tastes. I want to progress in targeted ways but am a little locked in to the research tree paths and rooms I can build. Whereas Rimworld is more open-concept in progression which is more to my liking. It's not my cup of tea, but it is a well made cup, it might be yours.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun and addictive, but oh so easy. It's as if Prison Architect and Rimworld had a baby, that stayed a baby. You start the game by fully customizing your cult and then that's it. You have a cult with already some followers just like that. No buildup to getting your first follower/member or anything. You start the game as an already established cult which seems like the biggest miss of this game. An interesting mechanic this game offered is the heat system. Through missions and growing your…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very, very shallow attempt at a Prison Architect type game. It is an interesting setting, but there is almost no content.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's kind of a huge miss. Instead of doing anything wacky or unique, you'll spend the first 3-4 hours building an extremely generic looking base to take care of your "cultists" that could've come out of any game in this genre... just normal base management stuff like sleeping quarters, food, recreation, etc. Then you're just running a weirdly themed roadside attraction for a bunch of people. Sit there, collect money, watch your little people scurry to and fro, slowly work your way through a…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's just dumb fun. Seriously, it's dumb. And it's fun. And if you get it on sale like I did, it's worth it. Of course I started with Space Epstein's Island and Jeff Two as leader. Our sacred object was The List. After that, it's a business/colony sim with a tangy zip. If you like any of those genres, get it while the sale is on. There's not a lot of depth, but you're not here for depth, you're here for the comfort of a charismatic leader telling you exactly what you want, and you want to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →awfully boring generic menu simulator. i tried to give it a fair shot with a few hours of play (remove like 30 mins just for the slow boring tutorial) and just cannot enjoy it. devs supposedly abandoned the game now aswell, so do not buy this abandonware. i bought it on sale and regret it. i feel jipped.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is currently unplayable. You can ignore the errors to launch the game but you'll get a fatal error when going to save your game. Do not purchase, abandoned by devs.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Abandoned game with an extreme lack of features. Buyer Beware
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Welcome to the cult of spreadsheets! Yes I liked the concept of this game, I liked growing my cult and expanding the business aspect of this game while exploiting the labor of those who join. However, this is the reward for long sprints of NOTHING. That is right there is plenty to enjoy of this game if you set up the cult just right but this would work better as an idle game with spreadsheets instead of a management game with spreadsheets. Now don't get me wrong. I was raised by two…

neutral · AI labelView post →I wanted to like this games so much, but it's clearly been abandoned while still needing major improvements. If an update ever does happen, it could be worth buying, but until then, I highly suggest saving your money for another game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Personally i do love this game, its a pretty basic management game on par with games like prison architect, though i feel the tutorial could have been a bit better considering it made me click through every tab on cultists and followers but didn't show me how to purchase food (which is very important) Can be A lot of waiting around at times, so if you're looking for a faster paced game it might not be your thing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wanted to like this game but so far it's just been a bit annoying. The tutorial holds your hand through the most intuitive parts of the gameplay, but some of the most necessary parts of gameplay are left unexplained and resources online are hard to come by. There is so much data and menues everywhere that even simple and necessary stuff becomes hard to find, especially for such a simple concept of a game. Warnings are not explained, so half the time I was just guessing at what something…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dead game. No more support from developer. It's cute and fun, but the whole game is just to simple. It's so simple that there is nothing to do for 10 minutes at a time and I'm only 6 hours in. The time it takes to get to the next upgrade just takes longer and longer as you progress with nothing to do in between.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The whole idea of the game is very interesting and cool. However, the game is completely dead and incomplete, there hasn’t been a content update in years. There’s no point in buying it if you’re only looking to explore some basic content. The game is fun at first, but over time it becomes repetitive and there’s not much else to do. If you’re planning to buy it, wait for a big discount.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's honestly a decent game. It can have moments where things get a bit tedious, and I can see it lacking replay value. But, it's worth it if you get it on a STEEP sale. I think the biggest issue(s) with the game stem from lack of dev support/updates/work. The game was clearly meant to have more content and engaging bits, but looks to have been completely abandoned after release.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game, it has an addictive gameplay loop but I do hope they add new stuff down the line and even workshop because the potential for mods would be amazing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is generally playable, but you can see that it's absolutely unfinished. TLDR: The "cult management" aspect is shallow and empty, not balanced in the slightest. --------------------------------------------------- 1. There's not nearly enough paths to evolve into. Right now it doesn't have a path for even every general theme of your symbol. (no dinosaur cult, no great old ones cult) 2. The depth of the theme you choose is not even closely enough for a management sim saying you are…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game starts out failry entertaining but the poor UI design will have you clicking all over the place once your cult grows to a large size. Adding more missions/events + reducing clicks by making more efficient UI menus would make this game much better and more engaging.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Currently this game is not in a state that I would consider finished and does not look to be getting more content any time soon. If they added more themes for your cult like a dinosaur theme and such that the customization implies you will be able to do it would feel much more like a finished game but as of right now you really only have 3 options and that's really not that many. Though mods would be a great thing for this game mod support is probably not going to happen sadly. I really hope…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not really what I was expecting, the game is alright I guess, at the beggining atleast, minus the very unfriendly tutorial that leaves alot of unexplained stuff that you learn later on. It does get stale pretty fast, it just becomes boring pretty quick, I like simulator games, but I really thought there would be more, the trailers made me believe so, but thats probably on me. Overall nothing much to say, besides it's kinda of a 'relaxing' game once you get the hang of what you need to do, but…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There isn't a sandbox mode and the game lacks customizability. Three skin colors, but fourty different hats? I can't choose my followers gender and I'm forced to follow some sort of 70s ideal of a cult. I thought mayve after the tutorial I could edit my cultists "anything" like hairstyle for example. Would be nice to have some variety.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honey, I Joined a Cult is a colony sim and management game where you manage a cult of your own creation and slowly work towards some kind of finale based on a theme you select. I've completed one of the three theme based finales, and feel comfortable writing a review at this point. HIJAC has a lot going on mechanically that I really enjoy. It's fun to build up your compound, the skill system is unique and silly, and managing your cultists and followers and maximizing the generation of money…

neutral · AI labelView post →DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!!!!! UI is a nightmare. NPCs have a flaw where they use the sink before the toilet and are constantly getting sick because of it and i'm sure the devs could easily fix this but i know they won't do anything because this game hasn't been updated for over a year with no news and a few parts of the game still say "more coming soon" also got a game ending glitch where all the tables were broken and wouldn't function (even replacement tables) but the game wouldn't…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very fun game, I could've easily spent couple more hours invested if I unfortunately didn't mess up my entire base. The game offers alot of variety when it comes to your cult such as satanic and futuristic which you can get inspired by real life cults and recreate them just like scientology.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The premise of this game is fun. Managing the compound and your cult members is genuinely engrossing, and you do start to get invested in them. The absurdity of the situation and the strange quests and consequences add a lot of charm and humor to the experience. Unfortunately, I couldn’t finish a full playthrough. Once you specialize under a certain theology, the game becomes far too grind-heavy. Not enough new events or mechanics appear to keep things fresh, and the gameplay loop turns into…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →DO NOT PAY RETAIL FOR THIS. Prison Architect clone with an amusing theme. Gameplay isn't super deep. I find on standard difficulty that I can half pay attention and probably keep progressing indefinitely. Don't think I'll play it again, but it was fun for a couple hours and was worth the heavily discounted price I got it for.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I honestly don't understand this game. My people are always exhausted, even though they have plenty of time to sleep. They constantly get injured for no clear reason, despite having multiple sinks and showers to wash their hands. Sometimes they can't find a bed, even when there are four empty ones nearby. Other times, I find sleep-deprived characters even though they have their own homes and assigned beds. They don't seem to enjoy anything in the recreation room and are always bored.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If creating a cult and managing it is like this, then it is no wonder no one wants to join. I knew this type of game gets repetitive eventually, and I can overlook it if it's entertaining for long enough to be that way, but here it happens so quickly that I can't enjoy it after learning the basics. It is not even fun to watch the cult members doing their thing, which adds an extra layer of sadness.

neutral · AI labelView post →Why such long tutorial with so many pause screens?
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fine if you enjoy a very relaxed cult theme simulator. You can create and decorate your cult compound to your hearts content. However, it lacks any real threat which makes most of your gameplay choices pointless and quickly turns the game into a waiting simulator.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really cute game in the veins of Prison Architect and Rimworld in its art style. The setting of the 70's and 80's cult mentality, Peace & Love, retro-futurism and Cthulhu is quite refreshing. Still in my playthrough after the tutorial, but the game feels "solved" in the default level of difficulty. It will only take my time to wait for the money and the missions until I complete the game. Then, another 2 playthroughs with the other 2 options of Divine Inspiration. I don't feel threatened by…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Note: I'll update this review later on when I'll get one of the endings So far, i'm quite mixed on it. For the most part its kind of boring, with not much to actually do. Progressing is fun (even though its so nauseatingly slow at the very beginning), placing/building things is fun, and customizing your cult at the begging is sorta fun. The humor in the game is kinda mid and most of the time it comes with negative impacts to your cult (negative cultist thoughts, newspapers, leader demands,…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game does a good job of adding Rimworld-like humor to a very unfunny topic. This is just my opinion as a survivor of a cult-like religion and upbringing and I mean no ill will toward other survivors who find this fame triggering. This is a colony-like management game with a variety of challenges that are totally customizable in the settings menu. My main complaint is some of the chunkiness created by the separate build and buy menus which should be one menu. I also wish there were more…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A management game where you manage your own cult. It is by far not a terrible game, it just doesn't do anything spectacular and leaves a lot to be desired: - The tutorial is the most boring, long-winded tutorial I might have ever seen. You don't need a half-hour explanation for such a simple game. - It takes way too long to get anything done. The game needs at least another faster speed setting or two. - The game pauses itself at least once a day, sometimes twice, with no setting to turn that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Silly little game, fun for a bit, but repetitive and abandoned from what it seems.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mediocre. Very little depth. The initial joke runs dry very quick.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →8/10 This is just a great spin on tycoon games, you literally run a cult as their leader and have to manage each aspect of it, from spreading the word in town, to stealing supplies and even dealing with police raids and protesters. You are able to make your cult 1/3 different styles: Classic, worship a higher being from a dark realm. A peace and love cult. A robotic cult where improving yourself is the goal. The game feels smooth and keeps you entertained by alot of random events with…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't know how to feel about this one. Eventually the gameplay kind of evens out into a repetitive loop with very little to do. It wasn't particularly boring; wasn't particularly fun either. If you're looking to waste a day or so then sure, buy this game. It's cheap. I wouldn't recommend this to anybody though. The menus were confusing, the starting tutorial holds your hand and won't let go for a while, the work schedule system is too confusing to the average player, the list goes on. I think…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A lot of interesting mechanics but it's shallow/half-baked that quickly turn it into a boring slog. There are a couple of annoyances that especially come to mind: - Maintenance Room doesn't actually maintain anything, you have to wait for things to breakdown before they can be repaired - For Divine Inspiration missions, why am I locked out of performing both missions or even the divine inspiration options when something is in progress - For the endings, honestly it's pretty shallow, all that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The thing I love most about this game is the humour element. The characters are so quirky and bizare, and the random quotes they say give loads of giggles. There's a decent amount to the game as well, going through different types of cult and different endings. I love the customisation options too. Definitely reccomend, especially for those who like their games on the silly side! :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish there was something like this, but more focus on true story stuff or going off the wall into eldritch gods territory, world domination, global destruction, etc. However, what is here is fun, simple to understand, and promised more updates in the near future.

I would still say it's still worth it considering how cheap it was when I purchased the game. It may not be a game you might spend over 100 hours on if that's the kind of game you're looking for.
