What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 181 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (3,343 of 3,717 positive).
Players praise the game's focus on combat and dungeon crawling, comparing it favorably to Baldur's Gate. [1][2][3] Reviewers highlight the deep character customization and challenging gameplay, especially on higher difficulties. [4][5][6]

They just throw a ridiculous number of enemies at you every two meters. BG1 and BG2 had the perfect combination of dialogue and combat. But this game just throws 50 enemies at you at once with no real chance of surviving. Dragon’s Eye was the biggest 'What the heck?' moment. Am I playing an RPG or a horde game? If I wanted those enemy waves, I’d be playing Doom.

Very similar mechanically to Baldur’s Gate, but the focus is completely different Icewind Dale is basically all about combat. You create your whole party from scratch and head into a snowy adventure filled with fighting and dungeon crawling. If you loved BG2 combat but wanted less talking and more action, this is pretty much it The atmosphere is great, the snowy landscapes and hand-painted backgrounds still look …

tl;dr: The closest comparison is obviously Black Isle's Baldur's Gate games. It uses the same AD&D 2E ruleset, the same Infinity Engine and is set in the same Forgotten Realms universe. The biggest difference is that, whereas the Bhaalspawn Saga focuses on story, companions and Forgotten Realms lore, Icewind Dale is a combat focused dungeon crawler built around a custom party. If you enjoyed the combat in Baldur's …

TLDR: A classic party-based RPG with a compelling campaign and strong sense of adventure. Deep customization adds flexibility, but dated rules, clunky mechanics, and weak party interaction show their age. PROS: ➕You create your own party…. ➕Good narrative ➕Feeling of adventure CONS: ➖…but creating your own party means less interesting story-driven characters ➖Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (2nd Edition) is dated and …

Okay, so you've played Baldur's Gate right? This is basically Baldur's Gate but with a tuned-up engine. Gameplay is more fight, less talk. Cool cold setting. If that sounds like something you're into, buy it! I bet it plays well on Steam Deck w those little mousepads. You need to batch select guys pretty often so it's not so great on regular tablets.

60 of 354 · most liked firstThere's a little game anniversary today, Icewind Dale's 25th. Which, yeah, releasing just a day after Diablo II did? Probably hurt it a wee bit. I have fond memories of this (and have played the EE since), and picked up on release, my excitement fuelled by my love for the Icewind Dale novels.
positive · AI labelView post →Baldurs Gate 1 is a fantastic adventure. I just finished Baldurs Gate 1 for the first time and really enjoyed it. That's why I want to share my thoughts on. I'm acutally kina fond of the genre and love games like Pillars, KOTOR, Tyranny and already tried BG1 a couple of years ago, but I gave up after some hours (more on that later). In the meantime I finished BG3 twice, played through Owlcat's Pathfinder games and now I wanted to give BG1 another go. Story: I kinda like it, but it's definitely…

Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale 1 & 2, KotOR 2, The Witcher 1 and NWN2 run on tech from BioWare. NWN1 was the birthplace of countless game designers. Love for "Infinity Engine-like" RPGs fueled the Kickstarter CRPG revival.
neutral · AI labelView post →This is a classic CRPG in AD&D 2nd edition. RTwP is my favourate system and I'm familiar with AD&D 2nd edition so my journey is quite pleasant. For new players who never played BG1 or BG2 before, there's a bit of learning curve in the game related to concepts like THAC0, saving throw categories and fractional APR. On lower difficulties, you can breeze through without caring about these. On Heart of Fury difficulty, the better understanding about these concepts definitely helps. The…

It has to be noted that Jeremy Soule composed this music, who has disappeared from the game industry following multiple sexual harassment and misogyny allegations.

The only way to combat the fog, to drive it back and clear the air, is to banish it with light from an ancient and forgotten Reghed cantrip. And time is running out. The players must journey to Icewind Dale and find Rudy the Reghed Deer Druid who can guide them through the fog with his magic light to find the answers they seek.
neutral · AI labelView post →simply a timeless classic, every rpg fan should play this masterpiece at least once in their life. its just as good as baldurs gate 1, but even tho it also has a linear campaign and a decent story, the main focus here is exploring dungeons. its literally one dungeon after another and the atmosphere this kind of game has is unique and incredibly immersive, from the dungeon design and creatures to the ambient sounds and music. just play it if you enjoy a good rpg, especially one with real time…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's such a tricky art... fun attrition tests in a fast-paced RTwP like Icewind Dale can be tiresome in a slow RPG like Baldur's Gate 3... Because of these per-game particulaties & high entry barriers, we never had a community as vibrant as tabletop RPGs... I feel only NWN1 & RPG Maker got close :/

It’s nostalgia for me – but not just for the game. I’ve recently replayed Baldur’s Gate, Baldur’s Gate II (BG) and Neverwinter Nights. Icewind Dale (IWD) was the obvious next step. Though the game is story light and combat heavy, as per design, and clearly not as good as the Baldur’s Gate originals, I felt a huge nostalgia for the way these…

I'm not thinking for mashing two games for a quick video, but more like for Icewind Dale 2 rebuilds (the original source code is missing so no true enhanced editions exist). Or remastering old titles like Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magic Obscura or even older games like Menzoberranzan and Stone Prophet. I'm assuming the biggest…

There's a lot of interesting things it does which I wish other D&D games did, but as I'm attempting a replay (solo fighter lol) it's reminded me that I love it gives items deep lore in a way I don't think has been done to the same degree since.
positive · AI labelView post →Reading Forgotten Realms lore for a game and it occurs to me, FR (and thus official #dnd) lore is very much about ‘names that describe things’ (Icewind Dale, Greypeak, High Forest) which is the exact opposite of Lord Dunsany style ‘exotic weird nonsense’ names. The former probably translates better

neutral · AI labelView post →This game is ridiculous. While the Story is entertaining and the areas are interesting, the fighting destroys all the fun this game could offer. The difficulty of this game is measured by the amount of enemies, that this game throws at you. In the beginning it is manageable, since you can pause the game and assign every character, but the further you get, the ridiculous it gets. Chapter 4 is a perfect example. If you don't walk one step at a time, so you don't trigger a huge group of enemies,…

I want to create a flexible core (attributes, stats, status effects, equipment, RTwP/turn-based combat) that can be configured via data, not code. Do you want a D&D-style setup? Fine.
