It is a canonical work of rarely seen proportions. Baldur’s Gate is the role-playing game that set the standard for fantasy RPGs for decades, and if one were to compare its status and importance to works within cinema, it could fairly be called the Citizen Kane of role-playing games. That is how significant and influential BioWare’s 1998 classic truly is. From a gameplay perspective, it feels close to perfection, …

Absolute classic. In which way? Let's take Dracula by Bram Stoker for example. Absolute horror classic that layed the basis of every single vampire story that came after. Does it mean it was one of a kind? Not really... Other vampire books were written before (Carmilla), but it was this one that stuck to people. When you're reading Dracula, you can sense just how much it has influenced pop culture and literature for …

Critics, per Wikipedia

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition received mostly favorable reviews from critics; on aggregate review website Metacritic the game attains an overall score of 78 out of 100 on the PC. Shacknews praised the remaster, calling the game "a truly enhanced version of a classic game". IGN gave the game 8.1, saying that despite having several changes, Baldur's Gate has aged well, and that new players will have hours of fun, but also noted that players will have to approach it with an understanding of its increasingly "antiquated" framework. Role-playing game website GameBanshee gave the game a poor review, listing many bugs and oversights and commenting that they prefer the original version over…

And as an aside - you should not doubt how fucking uncool D&D was in 1998 as a game, and how poisoned that particular well had been for a while. Baldur's Gate turned that around, and if you do want a road from D&D then to D&D now, it does strike me that Bioware's needs more credit than they get.

Coming to this game in 2025 as a BG3 (and general DnD 5e) player, it uses an ancient and super obtuse version of DnD that can only have been designed by a sadist or a madman. The combat mixes real-time and turn-based and gets the worst of both worlds. Even after finishing the game I still have no idea when turns begin or end. There are far too many enemies, they are all dumb as bricks, and they respawn way too fast. That said, the foundation of this game is really interesting. It's got a…

Baldur's Gate 3 and Expedition 33 First one is a great game, but combat is not the most important feature of the game IMHO. The other is very good, and the combat is more relevant. I think that the engagement is being able to build a strategy on how to win, instead of rely more on reaction.
