What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 185 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (779 of 986 positive).
Players appreciate the game's unique take on roguelite survival, focusing on resource management and the quiet brutality of nature. [1][2][3] Many find the camera controls frustrating and the gameplay repetitive after the initial hours. [4][5][6] Some reviewers note the game is not for everyone, with a slow pace and lack of challenge on higher difficulties. [7][3][8]

Played 31 hours. I really want to give this game a positive rating. This game has so much going for it, but I feel like a few minor changes could make this game so much more fun to play. The Good: the game is beautiful. the sights and sounds of being on the mountain are really the best part of the game. It's a fun world to get pulled into. Camera-wise, I know the camera can be a little annoying at times, but I …

It's not a bad game per se, but it's boring and disappointing. The trailer makes it out to be a strategy puzzler, the shop page claims it's similar to XCOM and also to Ancestors - all three of these claims are BS lies. The trailer promised a challenge, but a played it on hard difficulty and had no real problems reaching the peaks in good health. This game maybe could be challenging, but it isn't and the main reason …

I recommend this game to people who can manage their expectations of roguelites, survival resource management, solitary character experiences, and hiking/climbing, because many negative reviews seem to be from people who don't understand any of these things. So let me explain the core gameplay - Good, bad, indifferent: +Game's look and feel is polished. -The game's sound is limited to serviceable movement & event …

Insurmountable approaches the roguelike-survival genre from an angle few games attempt, shifting the focus away from combat and spectacle toward the quiet brutality of nature itself. Instead of fighting enemies, you fight exhaustion, cold, dwindling oxygen, and the deceptive calm of a mountain that hides danger in every ridge and shadow. The game casts you as a lone climber attempting to conquer three immense …

Let me start this review by saying that insurmountable is not a game for everybody. It is very slow in parts and can be very frustrating if you are not good at route finding, therefore, some real world mountaineering experience in route finding is helpful. That being said, it was a fantastic game. As an avid mountain climber, myself, I have to say that insurmountable, for the most part, did a very good job at …

68% of the 185 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Insurmountable. The complaint that keeps coming up: camera movement and position are bad. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →2.0 is a brand new game. While good, I still miss 1.3. I wish 1.3 was available in the main menu as an "arcade mode" or something like that while, 2.0 would be story mode. 1.3 was just choose a class and climb the mountain, pretty straightforward and great for speedruns. 2.0 has so much added to it and is fantastic, but absolutely destroyed the fun of runs. I believe both could coexist, but regardless, Insurmountable in any version is worth checking out.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun little Indie game about mountaineering. In essence you try to balance out your 4 requirements: energy, sanity, warmth and oxygen to keep your HP above 0. There is a plot to make sure you keep going. If you do all the missions you'll end up with 10-12h of game time.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A vast, merciless peak is in front of you, and you are ready with, well, a few things, probably not enough, but you might scavenge during the road right? Once on the mountain you'll encounter positive or negative events, where literally anything can happen. All this because of pure climbing desire? Hell no, you'd like to finally stay on your comfy couch but there's a timeloop trapping you on these mountains.. What will you do? Succumb to the loop or try to escape it? On the path you'll find…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The gameplay loop is far too repetitive and simply just tedious at some point.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Decent and original game about climbing, but no keybinds for zooming out, and a bad camera. This is kinda a me-issue, but I can't use the mousewheel due to a handicap, and that seems to be the only way to zoom out. It can't be hard to include some keybinds. The default camera is atrocious, many players have reported this in reviews and on the forums. The devs haven't updated the game in 600 days so I have little hope for a fix. I only climbed the first mountain, so I can't give a thorough…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cool game but for whatever reason the pathfinding is absolutely atrocious and for a game like this, that is quite literally a death sentence. I wasted so much energy going up and down, back and forth in ways that I didn't even want to originally go, despite my efforts to try and cancel the action. I personally dont have alot of patience for things like that. Editing because I forgot to mention that the camera and camera controls are absolute garbage.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The short version of things is that this is a simple mobile point and click game with very little challenge or interest. I paid three bucks, so I'm not really that mad about it. But it's not... Great. The longer version is that the writing is uninspired, and the gameplay is very simple and very easy. I am not particularly gripped by the story, which appears to just be a variation of Lost. The gameplay doesn't distinguish between hunger and fatigue, meaning rest is all you need - and because…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Replaying Metal Gear Rising and yeah it really is That Game. Holy shit. Insurmountable “once in a lifetime” highs for games
positive · AI labelView post →There are good ideas here, and if the game was executed competently, it would definitely be worth playing. However, there are so many bizarre UI/camera/control decisions made that the overall experience is more aggravating than it is gratifying. This needed a serious Quality of Life QA session that really looks like it never happened.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Runs well on the Steam Deck, however there’s zero gameplay support which the devs on the boards here proudly defend. Their strategy of spamming this on to Epic for free, Prime Gaming freebie, and Fanatical Mystery bundles has really made it have the appearance of a cheap title. It’s not a game I can play a lot of, perhaps a mission a day at best. The camera is janky and sometimes you get stuck right up against the character’s face and you have no option but to somehow pick a random space…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"A Mountain of Potential, Buried by Poor Design." Insurmountable had the potential to be a truly unique and engaging climbing game, but unfortunately, it falls short in several critical areas. The most glaring issue is the camera, which is simply horrible—one of the worst I've encountered in any video game. It constantly gets stuck at awkward angles, making it nearly impossible to navigate the terrain effectively. This is especially frustrating in a game where precise movement and planning are…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I don't write many reviews, but had to write this because I genuinely don't get what the other reviewers see. The game is just straight up boring. The camera controls are frustrating too but I could easily overlook that if the game was enjoyable. But it just isn't, it's just a slog to play. The majority of your time will be spent watching your character walk/climb, and the bits peppered in between that are not enough to justify it. I got it at a pretty good discount, like $2-3 I think, and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well, what to say about Insurmountable? Originally I was hesitant to buy this game because of some negative reviews making it sound dull and repetitive. I waited until it was on sale and bought it for about $7.50. So where does this game stand? This is one of those kind of games that I think will be hit or miss with people depending on their preferred playstyles. Some people are going to absolutely love this game, and some people are probably going to chuck it. Myself, I'm a huge fan of large…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →EDIT3: I must say, after almost finishing the game, this thing is far better, much more enjoyabkle, fun and replayable, than it originally appears when you begin. Even the hexes no longer bother me and I see the potential for taking another playthrough. The whole game is very compact and enjoyable. Still it is not as photorealistic, as it could be, but this maybe was not a realistic goal. But if there was a sequel, think Frostpunk like snow and realism graphics, then that would be a huge title…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The camera is simply atrocious. Besides that, the game misses its scope of "management". There's not much to manage when RNG events hit like a truck and there's not much the player can do. Caves should be permanent, equipment selection is a complete joke.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →>Missing Overlay DLL issue persists after 3~ years either making the game unplayable or annoying to play >Camera is nauseatingly too close to the character and makes planning routes annoyingly difficult Developers have abandoned the game and do not respect your time. While it's a good concept it's not worth it even at a 99% discount due to the lack of polish. Save your money or get a slurpee instead - That's a better use of your money than this game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I GUESS I had enough fun playing it once to not feel ripped off, but it's a tedious slog and I can't recommend it due to that. Many game mechanics are not given any in-game explanation whatsoever. Before playing you should read the gameplay guides on steam so you understand how the game works. Remember, you must HOLD the middle mouse button while tilting the mouse to look around. Holding the v key on your keyboard and tilting the mouse allows you to look farther but at even more awkward angles.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"Missing Overlay.dll" Error-Message when starting the game. Reading the forum this has been an issue for nearly a year. Gonna take the refund.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yeah no. Camera controls, limited field of view and basic mechanics. It is not a single player PEAK, maybe more of a mobile game on PC
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm very disappointed. The game could be quite good, but the camera controls are too frustrating.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Camera and camera controls make this basically unplayable. Even just an iso top-down mode would go a huge way to improving this game
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game at 8 hours, Okay game at 18 hours. 8 hours - Tutorial is pretty much non-existent. You need to guess and figure out what all the symbols in the game mean. Wiki or mod community doesn't exist for the game. - Survival, no save game. You get 3 lives or something, it looks like. Would've liked to be given the option to grind the maps or make save files, leaving the survival mode for higher difficulty level. - Camera work is a bit difficult, and sometimes can be frustrating. Climbing…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is neat, but very broken. I'm running into an issue where I can't rotate the camera, which has been reported many times already since very early on, and simply has not been fixed, but does make the game completely unplayable.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have only played 2 missions, but can't take a game serious that doesn't pull through with it's threats: I have 0 in multiple stats (something the game warns you about to happen) and instead of suffering for it get encounters that not only let me evade the consequences with a simple "I push through" dialog option, but instead heals me?! Apart from the false promises, the theme is just too repetitive. Different biomes would make it way more interesting.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game was pretty fun, it's just after the first time, it gets boring, since everything just keeps repeating, the "Thousands of difficult decisions" in the games trailer is, pretty much false, since I kept seeing the same ones more than 5 times. But besides that it's pretty nice. The achievments are just dog crap. I just always would back up my save before the last mountain since, if I don't, I'll need to replay the whole damn game over and over and over again. 6/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A nice roguelite(-ke, depends on the difficulty level) about climbing mountains (with some sci-fi elements), in which I spent WAY more time that it deserves, but nonetheless is quite good. The gameplay sequence is to climb a randomly generated map of a mountain (with some basic forms, so its not possible to get a non-passable level) in a form of hexes with different types of terrains, using resource management (you have 5 resources, sanity, warmth, oxygen, energy and health), and interacting…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love the idea, but unfortunately the gameplay loop is so dull it's not worth it: This isn't a rock climbing simulation but a single person hex board game taking place in the mountains. Difference being that hex is a strategy game whilst Insurmountable is filled with rng based loot that determinate your chances of winning.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's fine, just very easy, and the mystery is not particularly engaging.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was expecting a game where I'd actually have to think to survive but it's not challenging at all. It's just a point and click game.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After a grueling series of consecutive summits, low on oxygen and supplies, injured, delirious and disorientated, I summit the last peak, knowing that I won't have the energy or tools needed to make the climb back down to base level. I hope for some kind of miracle to get me off this bloody rock, but no miracle comes, and, as the cut-scene starts, and the camera pans away, I know that my character died on that summit, cold and alone, just as the sun rises over the clouds below.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I find it very inconvenient not to be able to look around. It would be too easy if you could see everything from the beginning, but you can't see anything during a snowstorm or at night, so it's okay to see a little more.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Nice game, but the camera movement and position is bad
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Utter boredom simulator.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The idea of a roguelike mountain climber drew me in, but that is pretty much the good part of the game. In the spirit of other unimpressed reviewers, the game gets boring really quickly. The story and events are really uninteresting right off the bat, the upgrades are just percentage efficiency effects and the ui looks very empty and cheap. There are plenty of better games to spend your limited time with.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →https://youtu.be/Y_VUlC4m1jM Climbing a mountain via board game mechanics may not always have a strong logical foundation but still has lots of meaningful choices on the way up.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're into mountaineering or climbing, this is pretty okay. Pick it up on sale because there's not much to it. Edit: The camera makes this game almost unplayable at times. If you can get past that, it's worth a $5 sale.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There's not much gameplay to this. It's one of a myriad games where you pick options during a random event, and hope the dice are on your side. The most decitions you'll be making is manually pathing to lose a little less energy. The climbing animations are so slow, you are well motivated to do it aside from mechanics. There appear to only be 3 mountains to climb, and you're expected to repeat them. The mountain is absolutely crawling full of other people, so you'd have anything to do. There's…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kinda boring imo, not to my liking. You just watch the character walk and climb, then click to next place and watch again! Refunded.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An overpriced overhyped shallow game. Get it on sale under 10$. I simply cannot recommand it, it is just too much a lazy design. The devs seems to have cut corners round. They do not even want to draw on their tile-based game the things they place on the mountain, they put rotating icons instead, pretty darn lazy. Just add to the tile the things related to the event (a crashed plane, tent, body, backpack, etc) and then add a blueish glow around the tile to tell the player that their character…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Unplayable. I don't know if this is related to the "DLL Overlay Warning" that countless people have commented on for 3 years, but whatever the reason, it never loads properly. I'm just glad I didn't spend much on it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game feels like a love letter to old school text adventure games with an updated modern treatment. It feels akin to a few mountaineering board games out there. If you like chill relaxing games, if you like exploration and discovery, love climbing or mountaineering, are capable of suspending your disbelief a little, and know how to remap keybindings, then this game might be for you. If you’re only a modern gamer who expects out of the box perfection and doesn’t like to tinker or doesn’t…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoyed it. Something a bit different than mainstream. Like a turn based strategic rpg kind of but with mountain climbing focus. I got it on sale and in that light, if you can find it over 50% off or in a bundle (ex. today there is one on Fanatical 20Feb2024 for ~90% off). Buy it. 4/10 at full price, but at 75% or so off it is worth it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I spent hundreds of hours on other platform so I had to buy it here when it came on a discount! It always brings so much joy and eagerness to play, develop and try out different tactics and ways to play through. Such an uncomplicated but complex game, a true jewel in this hybrid genre. I just adore turn-based games, especially tactical ones so this one is right up my alley! It has decent animations and UI, gorgeous and unique graphics, effective sounds and beautiful music. Game mechanics are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like it, it has good atmosphere, graphics are cool, and the mountaineering somehow feels real. The missions have a good length, like 1h ish. So it's a good game for in between. There is not so much content though, so replayability is not that big. I feel only slight differences between the 3 character types, and the procedurally generated maps are somehow infinite reprsesentations of the same. Playing on hard makes the route finding more challenging and interesting, but exploration almost…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I recently purchased Insurmountable, drawn in by its innovative gameplay and the promise of a fresh gaming experience. Insurmountable brings the excitement and danger of mountain climbing to life, with realistic challenges and the need for careful planning and preparation. The game has its ups and downs, just like real-life mountaineering. It quickly teaches you not to be overconfident or reckless; one wrong step can lead to disaster. The mountain's conditions can worsen dramatically without…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's tolerably good, and I would have recommended it on sale, except... the camera controls. On a lot of maps, it won't be incorrect management of energy/warmth/sanity/oxygen that will kill you - it'll be the wretched camera - disorientating you down the wrong slope of the mountain. At which point you'll have invariably depleted all the items and events needed to survive a backtrack. The new ping direction finder required for some maps makes it worse.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was gifted this game from a friend. Its a challenging game, taking into body condition, weather, terrain and mountain ascending route. The big issue I had was the 'Missing DLL Overlay' error. The suggested discussion and community fixes didn't work for me, but installing Beta version 1.3 did. Game works perfect with no issues now, although the additions added in for the final release are missing. It does seem this game no longer has technical support and its developer ByteRockers' Games has…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is not a bad game but has some flaws. You can buy it when it is on a discount. I enjoyed playing it overall but would not worth over 5$ imo.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting take on a roguelike. It's sort of like For The King, if you remove all combat. Choose your own adventure while climbing hex grid mountains, and managing your resources like sanity, temperature, oxygen and energy. I just wish the camera was slightly less rubbish, and that performance was optimized. Makes my computer sweat more than anything else I've thrown at it. The game also has a permadeath feature, and while I've yet to die once on my first run on Normal it is something to be…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tis game is actually a hidden gem. Trying to reach the top on the mountain while carefully planning where you go and when you should sleep was really nice. With the different characters and inventory managment, it goes even more in depth. Also the game ends when it starts feeling too repetetive, which results in a nice pacing. I totally recommend this and you should definetily give it a try.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A really interesting and strangely cozy sort of 'passive' roguelite, where your only goal is to route your hiker to the top (or various other locations) of a mountain and down again safely, and your only enemies are hypothermia, oxygen deprivation, and the occasional spikes at the bottom of a ravine you decided to jump across because you thought you saw a can of beans on the other side. The most interesting/unique mechanic for me is the game's relatively restrictive camera that remains…
