What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 188 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (2,335 of 3,251 positive).
Players praise the vast, beautiful open world and huge variety of puzzles. [1][2][3] Many note the game's troubled launch as an MMO and the subsequent offline transition. [4][5][6] Some reviewers express frustration over lost progress due to server shutdown. [7][8][9]

98.8 hours of progress lost because I took a break, and the devs decided to move to offline only, giving a short window to download your save before it's deleted forever. A window that I missed. I was JUST about to enter the pyramid, I had saved the game just outside and was going to go in the next time I played, and now I'm gonna have to put in another 100 hours, give or take, to get back to that point. Decent …

This game actually has a sad story with a silver lining to it. Initially it was meant to be a mix of puzzle gameplay and multiplayer mmo style open world exploration. You could see other players prancing about solving puzzles and showing off their character and skins, but could not really interact with them in any meaningful way, it was just "cosmetic" levels of jolly togetherness. The gameplay consist of exploring …

Wow, what a hidden gem. First of all, I suggest ignoring the negative reviews - they are almost all because of an admittedly crappy move by the developers who started with online only and then pulled the plug which caused older players issues like losing their progress. That's not cool and I definitely understand the frustration. That said, it is also not relevant for anyone buying this game after the fact. This is …

Did this game work back when it was made as an MMO? I have no idea. Certainly the concept of a puzzle game MMO seems harebrained. Must it have sucked to get your save file deleted when they tossed the servers? Absolutely. But how the game is now? Excellent. There are so many puzzles it's actually obscene (like over 16,000 of them). It is a super chill time as you wander the landscape seeing a puzzle in every nook …

Islands of Insight is packed with puzzles and gives players an impressive amount of freedom to explore at their own pace. The world is beautiful, and discovering new challenges around every corner creates a satisfying sense of progression. Some puzzle types can become repetitive over time, but the sheer variety helps keep things fresh. A relaxing and rewarding game for anyone who enjoys exploration and brain teasers.
Summarised from 34 of the 264 public posts collected about this game; every point cites the posts behind it ([n] opens the post) and the split is counted from the posts’ own ratings. Updated Oct 12, 2026. How summaries are made
Players who liked Islands of Insight talk about beautiful open world with many puzzles; those who didn't talk about original MMO elements felt unnecessary and hurt the game. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Islands of Insight received "generally favorable" reviews, according to the review aggregation website Metacritic. Fellow review aggregator OpenCritic assessed that the game received strong approval, being recommended by 73% of critics. In a preview, Wesley LeBlanc of Game Informer called the game "something I look forward to going hands-on with in the future", describing its themes as "intriguing" and its setting as "vibrant and diverse". He explained that he was curious why the game was shared-world multiplayer. Jody MacGregor of PC Gamer stated that it stood out for its lack of combat, saying that the puzzles seemed varied. She stated that there was a "Windows wallpaper vibe" to the…

neutral · AI labelView post →If you were to ask me about my opinion of this game at release, it would probably have been quite low. The devs (for whatever reason) decided to mix MMO and live service elements into a puzzle game. None of it gelled well. The game was being dragged down by the online only requirement, the multiplayer aspect did not matter in the slightest since there were no co-op puzzles and the game world's puzzles keep resetting so you can do daily quests for pointless cosmetics. And I apparently wasn't the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Oh, I somehow missed that Lunarch (previously of MMO puzzler turned solo game Islands Of Insight) launched a new puzzle game a couple weeks ago, and folks seem to really like it? Narrower in scope, but good to see them not giving up on their puzzle aspirations.
neutral · AI labelView post →I have thoughts on this one. I did get this game for free at the end of its online life when they were giving it away. Islands of Insight originally launched as an online-only MMO-lite experience. However, it flopped hard. The developers had to shut down the servers in October 2024, before the game reached a year old. Before abandoning the project, though, the developers patched the game to run offline in a single-player mode. Major props for that. Ultimately, the now-removed multiplayer…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved this game, genuinely. I enjoyed the puzzles and the sense of open world exploration. Unfortunately, the servers, and support for this title, were only live for a little over 8 months until 10/30/24. I am sad to see this one fade into oblivion. A true gem once upon a time, but now spoiled by history.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've been playing an open-world puzzle game called Islands of Insight lately, and it apparently didn't do as well as the devs had hoped, and they're having to abandon plans for continuing development, which is a shame. It's complete as is, and if you like puzzle games, you should give it a look.
positive · AI labelView post →The main problem I have with this game is that the puzzles you complete are unsolved every time so you can do them again. The puzzles you already completed are counted towards a tally of how many of a certain type of puzzles you completed in a area but when you're trying to solve all the puzzles in the area it's really annoying to figure of which puzzles you already completed since there's 100's of puzzles for each puzzle type. It's annoying to try to go around and try to find the last puzzle…

neutral · AI labelView post →I fully understand the decision to remove the server data and make this game single player. But please just do little work, bring the steam achievements to this game, like the other single player games. This will make the game a worth to play.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Interesting Idea. Abandoned by Devs before they could work out the bugs. Forced online only to promote multiplayer and then removed multiplayer as well as everyone's save files. feels bad.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the game is cool, but losing the online progression isn't cool
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Islands of Insight, the game I worked on, is now out on Steam! store.steampowered.com/app/2071500/...
neutral · AI labelView post →Oh boy did they make some bad decisions here. The MMO aspect just wasn't anything interesting and then how they turned off the servers without leaving something on so returning players could download their saves. I just don't feel like it's worth going back and getting back to where I was (endgame if I understood it correctly). It's not terrible but there are better games which have made more rational decisions.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you play a combat-based open-world game (Skyrim, Breath of the Wild), you're familiar with the gameplay mechanic of "fodder" enemies. These are bandits or goblins or bokoblins or whatever you want to call them. They're wandering monsters who exist to make the landscape more interesting and give you XP and opportunities to increase your skill. Open-world puzzle games don't usually have fodder, because their puzzles tend to be handcrafted, at least for the most part. Islands of Insight is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →(I got this game for free during a sale, not as part of a partnership) Four hours is not a lot in the grand scope of this game, but it is enough to provide my initial thoughts to anyone on the fence about getting this game or not. When this game was launched it was a an MMO. Unfortunately, due to money issues, as far as I understand it, the servers had to be shut down and the MMO aspect scrapped. This is of course unfortunate, BUT the devs did put in the work to give the game an offline…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well, I could have recommended this game... can't now. We were promised an online multiplayer puzzle game and we got that for approximately 8 months. Guess what Lunarch Studios? That's called a bait-and-switch. Won't buy anything from you again.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is fun, but honestly a large part seems like they planned on it being a cash grab and then just abandoned both the game and those plans after pushback. Lots of little quality of life things are missing, and I cannot give a positive review to a company that gave only 1 month to download progress or it will be wiped forever. That was the real indicator to me they were just dropping this game and moving on, as hosting what is essentially a file sharing server does not cost much at all,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was super beautiful and promising, but now the most innovative part, the online servers, are gone, and it seems as though there will be no more active development on the game. I was expecting a long-running MMO puzzle game, but that's no longer what I own. I'd get a refund if I coulf.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Lost all progress when it went offline only after not playing for awhile. I enjoyed it at first but didn't play for awhile, then suddenly found it was offline only and I had to start over if I wanted to play again. Why couldn't they push our online saves to steam for us? Game should never have been online to begin with. Started to play again because I do like the puzzles (from the beginning because the online saves were previously wiped) and within 10 minutes it soft-locked after completing…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's like The Witness, but if the puzzles were designed for your mom who does Sudoku on medium difficulty. She's smart enough for hard difficulty but she does them for relaxation and doesn't need the added stress. Also replace the pretentious intellectual parts with pseudo spiritual gibberish. I dunno. It's fun enough for now. It's pretty.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I playtested and pushed this game on streams, discord, and other socials. I was SO SO excited about this game and with less than a year they completely borked the release. Instead of the devs providing basic support to the game they decided to totally give up and make the game offline only. Absolute bummer as the game had so much going for it even during the playtest.

positive · AI labelView post →⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ – A Puzzle Paradise Worth Every Second Islands of Insight is one of the most delightful journeys a puzzle lover can take in gaming. From the moment you step onto its floating archipelagos, you’re greeted by a world that feels alive with mystery, beauty, and challenge. As a Seeker, exploring these breathtaking islands and uncovering secrets feels like wandering through a living, breathing brain-teaser museum — each area is meticulously designed and brimming with handcrafted puzzles…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game had so much potential, but sadly the devs made some very bad choices (making it online and using UE5) and then just gave up, moved on and abandoned it. It looks good and has a decent gameplay loop that keeps you engaged and there’s always something to do, but as it is now, I can’t recommend it in good faith.

neutral · AI labelView post →Unfortunately the game doesn't respect a player's time. Most of the puzzles are either no puzzles at all (like find barely visible objects or align the camera a certain way) or are insanely easy but what's worse is that halfway through the game (after about 6 hours of playing) the progress is blocked behind going back to previous puzzles and completed them with bonus objectives you didn't need to do at first which is a massive waste of time as you also need to find them sometimes in concealed…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the kind of game I just wish there was more of. It's an open world puzzle game with a huge amount of variety in the type of puzzle. The logic puzzle grids are the games core draw in, and my personal highlight. Fantastic of the devs to make the game playable offline rather than shut it down completely. Certainly worth it's price in time offered.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A byproduct of live service craze. Has brilliant ideas, completely unrealized. It's telling that their next game (Artisan of Glimmith) foregoes the explorative and multiplayer aspect for something smaller in scale to focus on what they do best, the puzzles. The world is huge, and yet it feels dry so quickly. Most of puzzles felt underwhelming (in fact some puzzle types are not really puzzles at all), or at least the ones located in the main island. The puzzles in the landmarks (and some…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The pitch for this game is wild - what if we took a bunch of pen & paper puzzles, some perspective puzzles, and a dash of hidden object game, and made an MMO out of it? So far, everything that I've seen is produced beautifully. This is a very good single player puzzle experience (If you have a powerful PC). The big questions that I don't see answered in this game are "what would make it a compelling MMO experience" or even "who is the audience here?". I buy puzzle books from a dollar store, I…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I did not play this back when it was online, I can only say my opinion as it is right now, offline. But if I was to play it back then, and have all my hours of progress gone, then yeh, I would agree with others and give this game a big thumbs down. Anyway, the game would fully appeal to puzzle enthusiasts, it is full to a brim with all kinds of puzzles, from logic and music puzzles, to match 3s, to finding hidden objects in an area, to having to position yourself just right in order to see…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can understand the negative reviews of people who lost their progress but for anyone starting now this is a great game to play solo. Tons and tons of puzzles from over 20 different varieties (some more fun than others (looking at you sound-based puzzles)) but overall most are great. Even tho I got it for free last summer I would have gladly bought it. If you like puzzles where you aren't constantly spoon-fed answers and hints this is for you. There's a story but I can't tell you anything…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like this game, the puzzles are very good, and there's a lot of pretty cool "environmental" puzzles scattered across the world, for example I like the matchboxes. The game is a weirdly addictive form of lovingly handcrafted "puzzleslop", thousands upon thousands of things to do scattered across a large explorable world. But the game was originally designed for some bizarre reason to be an online game despite the core gameplay being totally unsuited for that, and there are a whole load of bad…

neutral · AI labelView post →It's quite an odd thing. It's basically The Witness, but as an MMO, that then stopped being an MMO. So you have this big beautiful open world with puzzles scattered about, but you also earn XP for solving them and can spend it on upgrades and cosmetics. And there are quests but they don't really matter, and a lot of the puzzles are randomly picked so you'll find different ones if you revisit the same area. This helps keep backtracking interesting because you don't run out of things to do on the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Puzzles are too short and simple making it get repetitive. Also don't know why it was an MMO, couldn't do anything fun with my buddy. 5 / 10
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I call it an ADHD puzzle game, where you can get distracted doing puzzles for 5 hours. I love it so much just to do all of the different challenges in the game. The fact that there is 10000 things to do is so fun and i do not know how long it will take to 100% the game, but i will def try
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →extremely underrated game, worth more than it costs and extremely fun and long
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are a lot of "things" to do... Those I would not qualify as puzzles. It's like someone took the worst parts of MMO quest lines and added them as filler to make the world not feel barren. 2 out of 100 of those things you can do I would qualify as actual puzzles. It's like the purpose of the game is to numb your brain to make you stupid, so that the few puzzles you encounter would feel challenging. Would rate this game eating crayons/10
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly so nice to go back and play Islands of Insight again Played this quite a lot last year, got so addicted that I had to forcefully stop myself from playing during my final uni year LOL Although it's such a shame what happened to the game, kinda abandoned and then taken offline 💔
positive · AI labelView post →This is a great game, but I do not recommend buying it unless you really love puzzle games. They took off the online part of the game, they never really updated it so a lot of bugs and glitches are still apparent, some puzzles are either poorly made with multiply solutions but only one is right or they don't make a pattern like it says, however that is probably only a handful of puzzles from the game. This game could have used achievements as there is so much to do but feels like there is no…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Feels soulless and boring. Nice graphics but it has nothing to do with the core of the game. Pointless. Gameplay consists of running around nice landscape and "finding" pretty basic puzzles, then reading another sentence or two of exposition and than the segment repeats.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →They gave players a few weeks notice that online functionality would no longer be available and to download your save files. This was UNDER A YEAR after release? I went to check the game today and was severely disappointed to find out 70+ hours of progress, exploring, and LOVING the game was gone. I will not be buying a game from this company ever again.
