What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 133 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (162 of 239 positive).
Players praise the game's mature and compelling narrative, but note it is not for everyone due to graphic content. [1][2] Some reviewers criticize the story for relying on tropes and having a disappointing ending. [3][4] The acting is generally considered good, though a few find it overwrought or unrealistic. OK. Yes. Well. *Indeedy.* There are certain orthodox criticisms I can make of this game. The translation on this Her Story clone isn't where it should be—and as a translator, it irks me that this is becoming a more frequent problem as of late; I mean, German and English are in the same language branch, for Pete's sake. The subtitles aren't timed to the individual corresponding lines—they just come out as a big wall …

Very political title that claims to be about the plight of suicide but instead makes a mockery of the important issue of radicalisation and terrorism by relying on tired tropes. It's technically well done executed, i'll give them that. It did make me feel like i needed to rush to get to the ' real ' story. But what a let down that story was. So chiche ,full of tropes, including some dangerous ones such as 'people …

Jessika is mature FMV game that certainly does not shy away from sensitive themes, ultimately culminating in a compelling narrative, covering heavy topics that simply demand undivided attention and induce a shock factor. Admittedly, due to the graphic content of this game, it is not for everyone. However, for those who are curious and are not easily discouraged at the discussion of such topics, Jessika delivers a …

Never before have I finished a game and thought "I did not enjoy this, but I am glad that it exists" more than this game. As someone who identifies very closely with their German heritage, this was a damn gut punch. this was not a fun game. But it was a good game. It needs to exist. I'm glad it exists.

This game is a hard hitting mature FMV game. There's not much I can say without spoiling the content, but needless to say this could be triggering for many people. It plays in a similar style to Her Story. There are more than a few spelling mistakes and grammatical errors in the subtitles (i played in German with English subs) which i'm sure will be addressed in updates. A considered and sensitive approach to some …

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Introduction There’s always more to it, right? You scratch the surface but the deeper you dig in, you realize that some truths were better left alone in eternal obscurity. The FMV (full motion video) adventure subgenre has a rich history that traces all the way back to the early 1980s. It grew in popularity alongside PC gaming until it suddenly stopped being in the spotlight as 3D assets became the new “gold standard”. The only reference I shall make to Her Story in my review of Jessika, is to…

FMV game about a German girl named Jessica, whose life we can see through the history of her activities on the Internet. And this life appears before us in a very ambiguous form, I would even say that in a very provocative form. The themes raised by the creators of the game are extremely controversial, so it looks…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Jessika is a short (2-3 hours) investigative FMV game in the style of "Her Story". It tries to address difficult and important political topics that make some clips very uncomfortable to watch, while (at least for me) unfortunately failing to provide new or interesting ideas that might have made the experience worthwhile. 1. Story & Setting A father whose estranged daughter committed suicide, hires you - a sort-of P.I. - to look into an encrypted archive of video files made by her. In these…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →i recommend it but with some caveats.... (others have written good reviews , so do read them if you want more info). I'd have to say that the Super Race , anti migrant, neo nazi themes bothered me . I came to dislike this young woman but yes, its true that she was rather swept into it as a result of unfortunate situations. Her acting is good , the gameplay interesting . I never play music in games so can't comment .
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →While I did give a thumbs down, I don't think this is a bad game, what it means is that I would not recommend this. So why's that? Let's look at what this game does well and what it doesn't and come back to that question later. The actress does an amazing job and is really convincing (a bit too much somtimes, maybe). I also enjoyed the chats you have with your colleagues, they helped me get my head out of the insanity a bit, especially Chad. I played the game in german, so I can't say much…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I kept thinking I had a handle on where Jessika was going with it’s story but it kept surprising me. I won’t spoil it’s twists or highlights except to say I was very happy with it from a plot standpoint. The acting was top notch from the actress who played Jessika. She had to do it all: happy; sad; angry; hurt; etc. There were some plot points that I felt were unresolved. Maybe I was just reading too much into something the developers never meant to be deep but I think there was more that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wasn't really a fan how everything seemed so fake in the story. The game touches on really important topics, but somehow manages to make it seem unrealistic with the acting. I don't really recommend this game, but if you like games like Her Story and Telling Lies, this is close enough and will keep you busy for a few hours.

neutral · AI labelView post →Gameplay: You are under contract to look for digital history of a deceased girl, Jessika. To do so, you will by typing in tags in a search browser. Specific tags will have files - images and video - available that you may view. Most will be locked from the beginning, and must be gradually unlocked by finding and viewing out the ones that are at first unlocked. Needless to say, looking for such tags can be rather boring, especially early on the game when you have very few clues. And when you…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →*Spoilers* I was a fan of Her Story and Simulacra so when I saw this I was a little excited. I kind of regret playing this. The storyline did not flow together and the clips of Jessika talking was poorly done. Nearly 95% of the videos started with the word "Yeah and" and that was excruciating. In the defense of the game, it was probably a language barrier and poor translation. Either way though, I just felt like the story started one way and ended another way. It was definitely a twist but one…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I usually really like fmv games, but I did not like this game. The setup of the game is you're given access to potentially very private, sensitive information but decide to work on it at what appears to be an internet cafe? That sort of irresponsibility makes it hard to suspend my disbelief. You should be working in a secure facility on a computer with no internet access, or on a secure server with no external access. For a low budget option, even having a separate offline laptop to work on…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am pretty surprised why the game has such great reviews. I am a big fan of her story, and I love games like these- I find it enjoyable to hunt down all of the tags, and piece together the entire story. While this one did a great job all throughout, the ending was just awful. It raised a lot more questions than I could physically find the answers from, and it took a very dark turn that I was uncomfortable with. This game would have been a lot better if not for the abrupt ending, and if it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After playing the demo yesterday, I bought the game today and completed it. I can't rave about it enough! Never have I felt so immersed in a game. Definitely brought about a sense of urgency and rage, and motivated me to uncover the truth! Playing again to try to unlock all achievements. I highly recommend getting this!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am a big fan of FMV games and at the end of the day I do not regret playing this game. However, I believe this game has some problems with it's story telling. There are too much twists used which actually spoils integrity of the story and turns the experience into a disturbing one rather than spicing it a bit. Also, the ending did not make much sense to me. I mean why did Jessika choose me as her victim? She is a racist okay but I do not get why she buys a hacker's service herself…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As someone who seriously considered a career as a detective at the age of eight, I naturally feel right at home in an investigative game like Jessika. The purchase was therefore a no-brainer; but I was surprised by how much I was drawn into the game! The background story is easy to explain: As a white hacker one helps relatives of recently deceased individuals to gain access to their digital profiles in order to answer the question of "why". One sits in a café and browses through video data of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →'Jessika' is an attempt at anti-racism propaganda that goes all the way around the dial and ends up being one long phone call to the based department. They try to make the titular character seem "crazy" and "broken" for adopting the views she eventually does, but the problem for this narrative is that some of her points (such as that migrants are being imported and coddled by the state) are simply true on their face and might accidentally entice exactly the kind of further investigation into…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can't condemn the game wholesale, but it does have some serious flaws. Jessika is an FMV style, "crack the phone code" style game where you are given access to a dead young woman's postings and diary entries which are encoded and you must crack them by inputting key words and phrases gleaned from previous entries that you have decoded. *Positives* The acting may be a little overwrought, but it's not awful, and the gameplay (finding words of importance from the subjects files to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →tl;dr: combination of Her Story and A Normal Lost Phone; under 2.5h for a blind playthrough of the main story, more snooping can be done post-story; fairly immersive UI; quite heavy themes; overall mixed feelings; comedically overt and overly active racists; annoying/disruptive "glitches" when trying for 100% completion after main story; some typos and inconsistencies in the English localization. What even is the game? Imagine playing through Her Story - but via A Normal Lost Phone's…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So, game is good. Minor translation errors here and there but it's not 'de-imersing' I can't recommend the game because of how it plays out. The ending is scripted, no other way around it. There's a lot of jarring stuff; to put it without spoilers the term "That escalated quickly" is a very apt achievement to gain. There was talk of Jessika's baby sibling and her joy at being a big sister then her jealousy (older sister, I get that), there was talk of her mom drinking and her childhood and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was in an interesting format, the acting was very good, the discovery was nice, but the ending comes before you've even watched all the videos (not sure if it's triggered by something you watch or if it's time/number of videos you've watched) and you can't go back and watch the ones you missed. The premise is interesting but the ending is just too contrived and there are aspects that are somewhat incomprehensible. I don't plan on playing this again to see what I missed, but I won't…

I'm not trying to be mean but I kept removing my headphones. The story isn't always real interesting to me but I do like entering the keywords and finding connections, writing keyword ideas in the notebook and using it to keep track. I enjoy the "at the computer" aspect of it with all my little tools to work with. :) My rating is about 3/5 or 6/10 Not highest but does have a bit to it that…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I feel like I just played some sort of condescending government propaganda. The premise is good, the interface and gameplay is solid (if you like games like "Her Story") the acting is decent, and the writing isn't bad. But in the end, this is insultingly childish, didactic, and yes "liberal" pamhpleteering--something that the government of Canada or Sweden would put out. Nice try, but no.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a pretty obvious ripoff of Her Story, but not as well-polished. The written english translation is pretty wonky with lots of typos and the dubbed voice over is pretty badly done. The acting isn't very well done, either, in my opinion...the actress seems to pause in strange spots, but I will admit that this could be due to a language difference. The story overall is ok...but not fleshed out very well. The ending is awful and confusing. I really liked the game format of Her Story, so I…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When the store page said it develops into a dark drama, I did not imagine this. When a mystery pop up, whether it’s a work of fiction or a real life case, those that know about it want to know what happened. What happened on the day that they seemingly disappeared, why they were targeted, who was responsible, or what was their thought process if it was self inflicted. While many real life cases won’t get a clear picture, reasons from it being too long ago or the people involved just won’t tell…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Jessika is a mobile app that's been dumped on Steam as if it was a real PC game (it's not)... it's a cash grab from greedy mobile devs. Calling this a mobile app is a bit of a stretch, although it is most certainly prominent on the app stores it was designed for. This is really more of an interactive multimedia webpage pretending to be a game. So, you click around on the web page pretending to look like a laptop, and you can trigger various VMV sequences that go to the core of this mobile…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thumbs sideways. The gameplay, in which you are a security expert decrypting files in the hopes of solving the reasons for a suicide, is interesting. But the fragmented and somewhat shallow story lets it down in the end. I think the developers' intention here was to educate people about a sensitive and important issue facing many countries at the moment. However, I don't think that message was handled well. I can't see someone who might be harboring thoughts like that changing their mind…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In their attempts to, I assume (or at least dearly hope), make a game that condemns white supremacy and nationalism, the developers have accidentally instead created one that wholeheartedly embraces and supports it. The game tricks you by starting off with an intriguing enough premise, which quickly devolves into racist, nationalist rants with no rebuttal or any kind of indication that you're not supposed to take them at face value. In dialogue choices, the main character can either agree with…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm generally a fan of FMV games, but this one is just very, very bad. The gameplay is flawed, the story is the poorest you can imagine, the investigation is full of dead ends, you can also forget about the acting. You have to investigate a catalogue of 175 videos, recovering them by guessing keywords... It's not a real investigation, because you really have to guess these words. They will unlock videos or documents that often have nothing to do with them. Plus some discovered videos will stay…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Jessika is a game with a wonderful premise, exploring the downfall of someone and their ideologies. There's a lot that can be used from that point alone, especially with some good strides in player choice. Unfortunately, the game squanders this by creating a story much larger than what can fit its short run-time. Things get rushed and cut out, leaving fans confused and disturbed rather than intrigued. On top of all that, the voice work and English subtitles are poorly done, slapping a layer of…

After I was done having a heart attack, that is. The demo ended abruptly and unexpectedly and I was playing it late at night in my dark room. I nearly threw my laptop across the room. That being said; I love how this game takes the ideas from a few other FMV games like 'Her Story' and 'Telling Lies' and expands on it. The concept and the reason…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hum... It's OK. This is an FMV/interactive fiction/detective & hacking game. The graphics are fine. The music consists of a few tracks—none particularly memorable. The story is the main attraction. No bugs or crashes. Overall, entertaining. The game is similar to Her Story. You need to figure out what happened to the protagonist by hacking and uncovering video clips that gradually reveal the truth. That’s it. I won’t spoil anything. You can finish it in one sitting. It includes achievements…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hunting for tags is cumbersome and the story is subpar - like other reviewers said, I closed the game with the feeling that i was supposed to sympathize for Jessika (which is absurd). I assume the devs tried to criticize the rising extremism across the world and youths, but it did a poor job at that.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Reading the other reviews I understand what they meant about the issues the game has with it's story and how they portray it, but to be honest I didn't really care about the deeper meaning. I just took the game as face value and I really liked it. I went into the game blind and had fun with all the unexpected twists they threw.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Jessika is a FMV game where you try to dig up Jessika's past and perhaps find out the reason she committed suicide. You do this by entering tags and search results of videos, pictures and text messages may be found. The game gets somewhat creepy as you play. It kept me interested for the few hours of gameplay. The English translation was far from perfect though, but I still managed to get the general understanding of the game. Recommended.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The story wasn't that interesting. The system started pretty interesting but it quickly became mechanical and the suspension of disbelief left before I watched even half of the videos. The ending is whatever, but post game, trying to do what was left to do, just to appease my curiosity, was especially boring with the ambient stuff that I don't want to spoil. Anyway, Her Story isn't a great game either, but it's better than this one.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It touches on some serious issues... However somethings regardless of what you do still trigger as to continue the story. I thought the interface was great (considerably better than Telling Lies which is another Her Story clone), the story was quite interesting and the acting very good. If you’re willing to look past the interface issues, you'll find yourself engaged in a relatable life story about racism. It contains content that will be triggering for multiple different traumas (including suicide, sexual assault, and racial hate speech). If you are able to withstand those, it's worth playing. The gameplay is interesting, the story is deep and powerful. It's one of those games where you play it fairly quickly (about 3 hours for me) and then spend the rest of the day…

A clean and responsive interface facilitates searching for videos in a database and chatting with characters about your findings. While I had a few questions after the ending, the ramp up to this point was really smooth and dove into some serious topics to a degree that surprised me for this genre of game.
