Players describe Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara as a cute, simple 3D platformer that is short and sweet. [1][2][3] Many find it relaxing and beginner-friendly, with easy controls and a chill vibe. [4][5][6] Some reviewers note that the game can be frustrating due to controls or difficulty, especially in time trials. [7][8][9]

Koa is a decent 3d platformer. It has good movement, decent story and progression, but the fixed camera and platforming can be suboptimal, and the frequent game-pause-camera-pans within gameplay are quite disturbing. It doesn't get my general, active recommendation, but if you like 3d platformers, it can be worthwhile, or enjoyable if you're less bothered about some things than me. + Decent implementation of cute …

Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara is Chibig’s latest game, set in the same universe as Summer in Mara and Stories of Mara. This time, it is a basic 3D platformer that pays homage to the classics of the genre. It is extremely similar to the developer’s previous titles but fortunately, it is short and sweet - a stark contrast to Chibig’s previous projects which are known to be filled with bloated content. Short fun 3D platformer that leans on the easier, more kids friendly side. Nothing to write home about, but still quite enjoyable for someone experienced in the genre and a fun 100%. Ultimately, yes I do recommend Koa, but on a generous sale.

"Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara" seems like a cutesy platformer set in a tropical archipelago, but unfortunately, that's just the first layer. After a very simple tutorial, you encounter the first real levels, and the difficulty level quickly ramps up. The times to complete stages are very demanding, and combined with the difficult, unintuitive controls and lack of clear indication of where Koa will land, the …

I think I’m officially a Chibig fangirl. This particular game is a cute little 3D platformer set in the world of “Summer in Mara”. You absolutely don’t need to have played the previous entry in the series to enjoy this, but if you have played, it’s nice to see some familiar faces. There are seven different “worlds” each with three main levels and a boss level, as well as some optional side levels for collectibles. …

For context, in order to undestand the story better you may want to play Summer in Mara first but there is nothing stopping you to just skip the dialoge entierly like I did. The game definitely isn’t the longest; if focusing on the story itself, you can finish the game in about 5 hours. I wanted to torture myself, so I decided to get all the gold medals, which was a fairly straightforward challenge until the last level that took me over an hour to beat. I admit I suck,…

neutral · AI labelView post →I really enjoyed this game, was surprisingly challenging! Getting 100% was fun and easy with practice :)! The only thing I regret is buying the rest of the dev's games because Ive had issues with some of them and the devs were just hostile and rude when I asked for help with it and basically told me that they don't work on the game anymore so if you have issues thats tough luck basically lol which I found pretty gross. Ive read another review on one of their games that they had similar replies…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara is a respectable high-cute-factor platformer for the casual gamer, but I think Chibig missed the boat here by situating it in the Summer in Mara universe. As someone who loves Summer in Mara, I have to consciously ignore some things to enjoy it, in a way that I wouldn't need to for a standalone title. I loved Summer in Mara for its depiction of island life and values, for the way it depicted the natural world, and faithfully captured the heart and spirit of…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really missed the simplicity of a 3D platformer that wasn't bogged down by complex controls. This game reminds me of platformers from the past like I've played on gamecube, and it was just a good feels moment the whole time. plus the art style is very bright and cute. If you have missed 3D platformers of the past please give this game a try, It would be lovely to bring back a return of simple but fun 3D platformers.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →3D platformers have had the bar set pretty high by Mario, Banjo-Kanzooie, Donkey Kong 64 and the like. Koa's levels are small and basic, not finding it compelling despite having a bit of an interesting world map hub to sail around in. There are far more compelling 3D platformers on Steam with bigger areas to explore like Yooka-Laylee, It takes Two, Unboxed etc.

positive · AI labelView post →Not a bad game, it's just a tad better than mediocre. The briefest way I can describe the experience is that it feels like a properly completed and polished final college project for Game Design. Simple, and mostly too easy, so easy that I basically only died by letting my guard down at how easy it was and getting lazy. The dialogues were pretty lame too, though the characters themselves had an interesting charm with their designs. The things this game gets very right are the art style and…

neutral · AI labelView post →This lovingly crafted world is like a home with a beautiful garden and exterior, but the inside of the house is empty. The creators forgot that the key part of a 3D Platformer is, well, platforming. There is a jump and a roll. Ground smash and thrown objects are only used for boxes or buttons. Again, there is only a jump and a roll. I played through to world 2, waiting for a reveal of another ability, but there is none. I'm sorry, I cannot just hold forward on the control stick, spamming jump…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Super casual and sweet little game. Straightforward type of platform with easy levels and time trials, that will not cause you problems. The music is nice, good controls and the levels are creatively designed - Overall a very pleasant and chill game. My only complaint is the price which is a bit high for the hours of gameplay you get, so I would recommend waiting for a nice discount.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara is a chill 3D platformer for kids but offers enough tech for doing some fun speedrunning. Levels consists mostly of time attacks and the time for gold medals are very relaxed so they should be attainable for all kinds of players. 7/10. Chill fun game for all ages. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tby8TzynKs Follow my Steam Curator for more: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/43514354/

positive · AI labelView post →Looks cute – but that's about the only positive thing I've to say about this! The game requires you to hold down the run button for pretty much the entirety (!) of its playtime. You won't unlock any new abilities. The gameplay never meaningfully evolves. The difficulty is all over the place and checkpoints can be frustratingly sparse. And don't get me started on the "story"... It's ultra uninspired and WAY too wordy for that!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I feel a little bad for Koa because it's good game, but the current landscape leads to it feeling underwhelming. If this had came out in 2010 this would be a certified 3D platformer classic. Most of Koa's qualities are good, but none are exceptional. The movement is fluid and engaging but it lacks any advanced techniques or real schmoovement, which is something a game with a focus on speed should consider a priority in my opinion. The levels and settings are fun, but never reach more than one…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Being a huge "Summer in Mara" fan, I was really excited about this new game. However, I can't help but feel a bit let down. The graphics don't quite match up to the previous game, which was my cozy escape on tough days. The vibrant world and lovable characters in "Summer in Mara" had me completely hooked. Sadly, this new game falls short in capturing that same level of magic. While I do appreciate the sentimental value it holds, there's a certain charm and depth that seem to be missing. I had…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you're looking for a very beginner-friendly or relaxing platformer, this is a good option.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got this in a bundle from one of their other games I wanted to buy, but this was a fun 7hr to 100% platforming/collectathon game for sure. Runs great on Proton and didn't face any technical issues at all. The negative reviews about simplicity, meh, a few levels took several retries to get gold time-wise, it's never boring though.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →- cute, amazing aesthetics - writing is uninspiring, lazy - the 3d level design is okay-ish (they do a better job with the 2.5d part, tho)

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cute and colourful platformer game. Reminds me of Super Mario 3D World but I never played it. Levels are short and simple but controls are sometimes a problem. You see, since it's a game where you want to gain most momentum while running, you have to do long roll jumps (à la Super Mario 64) but the jump button is also the ground pound attack (which shares with RS button) and the roll action at the same time. So, I often end up killing my momentum or even plunging into the void. Beside this…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is just perfect for a few hours of relaxing and feel-good platforming. The controls are very responsive and simple to pick up and play. There are no hidden or overly difficult mechanics, and the progression feels good enough, so I wanted to get all the achievements. There are a few not-so-easy levels that serve the purpose of giving you a nice sense of pride, but that's it!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun platformer, not hard but does have some levels that I thought were tricky so it's not easy 100% which I think is good. I think the controls worked well and plays great on the Steam Deck. If you like Mario, A Hat in Time, then you might like this one. For the price it's not bad and the collectibles are easy to obtain.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is pretty fun when it sticks to its strengths, but sadly tries to shake things up a bit to much a bit to often in ways which absolutely kill the fun I'm having with the quite solid movement. Sure I get it that games like these can benefit from shaking up their gameplay with the occasional underwater level, auto scroller and auto runner, but having all 3 of those within the first 10ish levels isn't an attempt to shake up stale gameplay, its an, in my opinion unwarranted, lack of…

The style is cute, there's lots to do and it's just plain fun once you get used to the controls. The controls are similar to mario games in the sense that you have to create momentum with button pressing. But it's a bit more challenging to get right when you're required precision with higher speed. Also kudos to the achievements. They're focused on random fun that is easily achievable, collectibles and finishing the…

neutral · AI labelView post →Koa is a very competent platformer, a notch above the licensed-movie pablum sold to kids, but definitely not reaching the heights of Nintendo fare. Think of this as a cozy platformer. There’s enough challenge and variety here for this to be engaging for adults, but it’s definitely not difficult for anyone who is used to platformers. Getting the best time on the levels was fun and balances the low difficulty for me. Movement feels great, which also lets me forgive the low difficulty. It’s…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Please add a way to mute the character, I can't play this game if she yips upon every jump. Annoyed the heck out of me, and I'm typically really tolerant of quirks and jank.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If I had to limit what I think of this game to one sentence, I would say that it has really, really good level design. Just beating a level is going to be pretty easy most of the time. But beating a level fast is where the fun comes in. Movement is simple: skip, run, jump, roll, and long jump. The secret to going fast is to chain rolls and long jumps together. And the levels felt perfectly designed for going fast. Almost always, platforms were spaced so that I could choose to either use normal…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game mechanics are sloppy and annoying during fast portions. Graphics are simple. Not worth anything near 20$
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Short and sweet 3D platformer. Does not wear out its welcome. I enjoyed many of the levels and it builds on the world of Summer in Mara.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A short, but fun little Super Mario 3D Land/World-esque platformer. Level design is relatively standard fare, but worth the play if you enjoy 3D platformers. It's very cute, nice to look at, and has some good music. It mostly feels good to control, although I'm not a fan of the roll and run buttons being the same button and wish that we could rebind them separately. I was also shocked to see a touch of Phantom Hourglass DNA in this as well. I know these characters are referencing story from…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sometimes you just need a good 3D platformer as a fun palette cleanser after a grueling at time at work - that's where Koa and the Five Pirates comes in, as a charming little level-based platformer that doesn't overstay its welcome, and packs just enough variety in to stay interesting, but not enough to really climb into the realm of idiosyncrasy. Think Lucky's Tale: Short levels without a ton of precision involved and minor collectibles. Though, what does add an additional sprinkle to joy to…
