What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 180 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (441 of 535 positive).
Players praise the game's strong atmosphere and improved visuals. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the story is engaging but loses mystery by over-explaining. [4][5][6] Several players feel the sequel changes too much from the original's survival focus. [7][8][9]

Spoilers ahead. This game was a massive departure from the first game. It was a bit jarring. I forget at what point, I think it was running from the Wendigo to get to the house. It was just weird for a few reasons. * The monster/reveals were way too early, there was no mystery or 'thriller' atmosphere anymore. Seeing the Wendigo just run away because I passed some trigger threshold felt pretty flat. * There was a …

Stands out for its evocative writing and understated narration, using atmosphere and environmental storytelling. A perfect winter game, just like The Long Dark.

This game will not be for everyone; I liked it, especially the first 50% of it, then the tension nosedives. This is a game that works on its atmosphere, graphics and narrative, even though the gameplay implementation of this narrative is superficial. Part of the problem is that it looses much of the charm of the first game by trying to explain the events a bit too much. Much of the mystery is lost in the process. …

Kona II is a nice follow-up to the first game, with a lot of odd changes. You will enjoy seeing the conclusion to the story, but many of the things that made the original Kona so nice are missing. The survival aspect is gone and you will rarely need to worry about the cold--while such worry was a highlight of the first game. Kona II also has one of the most bizarre pacing decisions that I've seen, locking you inside …

When I started Kona II: Brume, I hoped for a strong atmosphere and a good story. In many moments, those expectations were met. The game looks better, the narration feels smoother, and there is more attention to detail in the environment. There is less walking around and more real investigation, with a dark, cold atmosphere that works well. On the other hand, the game could be more dynamic. The pacing sometimes slows …

60 of 191 · most liked firstI really liked Kona, but Kona 2 is.. a big fetch quest (bring me 10 rocks oh good, now bring me 4 red rocks)? It was way too frustrating to navigate the zones (sometime you can go there, sometime you can't, and later an area you think you can't go , can now be reached by an interaction.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game deserves a negative review. Not for the game per se, except for some objectively bad gameplay hiccups, but for existing as a sequel of a fantastic game. People in other reviews talk, more or less, about the same problems I state in this review buy they mark the game as positive. I can’t really do that, there is too much bad and so few good to justify a positive attitude. I am not calling the other reviewers dumb, this is my take, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I had a…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kona 2 is a miserable slog through empty corridors and labyrinthine levels that completely guts everything that made the first game good. The Good - The dogsled, while a step down from the car in the original, is a fun way to move around the map and works well with the setting. - yeah thats all i've got lol The Bad - Empty, boring world. You walk/sled from point A to point B with nothing of interest at all in between. Exploration is, at best, rewarded with pick ups you will already have in…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is not really a detective game where you can be creative and solve puzzles and it's not really a walking simulator either, as your freedom of movement on the map is pretty restricted and there is nothing interesting to explore. It's more or less "walk a lot in the same places in other to gather all things / open all doors" then move on and do the same thing on a different map. Overall it's pretty boring and bland
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The first 5 minutes of the game was fun and then it became a boring dark maze in a building. Just endless circles of the building. I was ready to ditch the game then used a guide to get through the tedious building and so I could enjoy exploring and investigating outside of the world. Sure can't wait to meet the people of the town and hear about what's going on! Until I realised there's nothing to explore no investigation notes to pick up. Just an empty empty world between Point A and Point B.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I just finished the game for the first time, and as the credits rolled I actually felt like applauding. I wasn't sure if the sequel would be able to match Kona, but it succeeds in spades. The story, the art and the music... wow! Kona is fantastic, but Brume manages to top it. Well done!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Tired of running into situations where the obviously right thing to do is prevented by the game developer for "reasons". Specifically, found and retrieved a battery that takes two hands to hold, but cannot carry it through double door with giant-ass buttons on it. ALSO cannot set battery down to open apparently wildly complex door with giant-ass buttons. Have these developers never been to any commercial building, ever, while carrying something? Back on planet Earth, your hip will kick…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My main criticism of the first game was the supernatural far-fetched sub plot that was only loosely tied to the main story. In my opinion it should have been cut altogether as it weakens the already mediocre plot. Sadly Kona Brume pulls this story in the foreground and sprinkles in some "big corporation is evil" narrative. The game generally changed its style somewhat. It reminded me of the Resident Evil games a bit. Gameplay wise as well as in regards to the story. This isn't a bad decision,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I literally never write reviews for games, but I noticed how few people have really even played this game, I figured might as well write a quick review. First off, I love Kona! The first game literally became one of my favorite games in High School and I remember playing it to completion over the course of a month. Recently I discovered that they had made a Kona 2 and because I enjoyed the first one so much I bought this game without hesitation and let me tell you, this game is worth it! The…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not as good as the first part, but still okay. One of those games you wish there was a neutral recommendation option for, but can I recommend it? No. I'm not even sure why this sequel exists to begin with. You already solved the case in the first game, so they come up with the most generic "it was part of a bigger problem" story for the sequel that simply doesn't seem to have anything interesting to say. Frankly, it's run-of-the-mill videogame-plot-bs barely making sense complete with…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →3/5 The first game was AMAZING. This one felt a bit flat for me. There was no mystery anymore, a lot of unnecessary running back and forth
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Eff a game where you can't save. Lost over an hour of gameplay because of this. It's never clear what is saved or isn't. Too bad, seemed cool. FYI the first game had this issue too.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I played Kona II: Brume shortly after finishing Kona, but I prefer the first game. In Brume, you step into Carl Faubert's shoes again and uncover the source of the mysterious storm (the Brume). Brume does have similar elements to Kona where you have to worry about Carl's health and warmth, but you do not have to carry around wood and fire starters with you as wood is always near the fireplace. Also, Brume eliminated the stress bar, which I think is fine. In Kona, you have access to Carl's truck…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ok so I was really enjoying this game. Right up to the point two thirds through the game when it started freezing at the loading screen. I have tried to restart everything and still can no longer play. This game should not even be allowed for sale until this is fixed. especialy when the devs are well aware of the problem for laptop users. This is ridiculous. Ive been playing for 6 hours so I cant even get a refund. Dont buy.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A noticeable drop from the previous game. While the graphics have improved, it is less fun and engaging than the first Kona. In particular, the stripping of supernatural elements really left a sour taste in my mouth and robbed me of my investment in the story.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really liked the first game and was pumped when I heard a sequel was coming out. Well it seems like they removed what I enjoyed about the first one: a small town to explore at your leisure while being a detective and replaced it with being in a mansion the size of a museum and added batteries. This is not a bad game, but I just didn't get anything out of this one.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sadly enough... I cant' really recommend that. Altho the graphics are better, this is not better than the first one. Big spaces with no places to go... 3 branches ways, but with 2 obsivously closed, etc... cheap puzzles, cheap story writing... I don't know. Don't get the gist maybe. There are way better "walking simulators" out there.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →*Mild gameplay & story spoilers* Kona 2 Brume was a complete disappointment. Having loved the first game, the developers took everything that made the first game unique and neutered it. The maps became smaller and claustrophobic with invisible walls. The game made a *huge* point to advise players to choose their difficulty based on "their experience with first-person shooters", which set a huge bar for the kind of gameplay that was expected. That being the first mistake, the next was the game…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I just don't understand why the sequel is such a downgrade in comparison with the previous game. I wanted to explain at length what I didn't like and why, but it feels like a waste of time.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →KONA was a really appealing game, It had a mellowly paced tension about it. The narration was dryly humorous, the characters were interesting, combat was a little weak. KONA II lacks some of that appeal. There is a bit more ammo available, always a plus. But they eliminated the beer and cigarettes! The woke are rearranging history to suit modern mores. Again.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first seemed ok. Then I got a good ways into the game and had to rely on walk through pages to get where I needed to be. Then got further in the game only to find out I didn't have the laser gun. 4 hours into the game. Moving around is also clumsy especially with the dog sled
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The first game was fun, this one just isn't interesting enough to keep playing
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A worthy follow-up to Kona with an equally strong winter atmosphere and an interesting story. The map (or maps, rather; the world is divided into several chunks) is now considerably bigger than in the first part, and there are more NPCs around (I think the first part had just one). There's more variety in the game's locations and gunplay is better with realistic, "punchy" weapons. There's also some scope for exploration if you want to get all the achievements (although there's nothing…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pros: +Might be the only I've played that you can set to Canadian french, and is set in Quebec +Really nice winter/snow/cold visual and sound effects. +Fantastic story that got me hooked. Narrator sounds great, esp. in the original french. +Loved the journal. Taking pictures of things (highlights when it is relevant to the investigation) was very cool, though a bit underutilised and completely optional. The fact that ghosts don't appear in the pics is a nice touch (except the ghost dogs in the…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thank you to all involved in producing Kona 2. It provided a satisfactory conclusion to Kona 1 ending. Both Kona 1&2 give the full detailed story of the Kona world. I loved the story of the Kona world, and enjoyed the game play of both games immensely.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was a fan of the original Kona game. Unfortunately, Kona II Brume doesn't live up to its predecessor. At all. Starting with technicals, it just keeps on crashing at location changes or when loading saves. One has to reduce the display resolution to barely readable, load the save, and revert the resolution to the original. The user interface seems to be designed exclusively for consoles. Cannot proceed with a mouse click, only by pressing E key??? List/journal navigation and selection only…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →In my review of the first installment, I mentioned that the survival elements felt both lazy and unnecessary. Here we are again as I am dragging around three guns. Once again, it feels like the developers did not trust the player enough to simply take part in their interactive walking simulator. My backpack was filled with more than a hundred batteries and overflowing with ammunition, and for what exactly? In the first game, I never found myself in a situation where I genuinely had to embrace…

neutral · AI labelView post →Having enjoyed the first game I really wanted to like this game. Sadly, that's not been possible. The whole game is mostly an on-rails story with few choices available. Sometimes, however, you get the chance to wander around without any idea of where you should be going (like in the Mansion). I only managed to get as far as the Mansion because the character got stuck in a corner on one floor of the Mansion - between a radiator and a waste bin, it seems, I tried everything but couldn't move from…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quite a bit different from the pacing of the first game, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit! Recommend on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kona II is a pretty solid sequel to the first, it retains the similar atmosphere as the first yet makes it feel new. Gameplay was changed a bit yet didn't feel like it strayed too far to seem totally different, the story wrapped up fairly well. Graphics are very good and the performance is as well. The voice acting was great however I gotta say although I liked him and he felt right but I do miss the original narrator from the first game. Overall if you like the first Kona you'll probably like…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Went back to play Kona 1 in anticipation of playing this after it being on my wishlist for a few years. Kona II is a drastic improvement over the last game, and I have enjoyed both very much. In my opinion Kona II has a much deeper story, better gameplay, better visuals and was generally easier to keep engaged with. The other thing I really enjoyed was the overall environment and feeling of the world. Both Kona 1 & 2 feel distinctly different to me than other similar games. The narration and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →after 3 hours of playing already more than convinced and definitely recommend playing this if you like games like firewatch! very exciting game though
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Less detecting than the first game, but its far more polished. Better story, carrying on from KONA so play that first. 8/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is legitimately the reason why Steam needs a middle ground between the thumbs up and thumbs down more then any game i have ever played/ Let me start out by saying i am a huge fan of the original Kona- so much so that i bought it thrice; one on switch, one on Steam, and on PS. And i wholly believe the first game is overall better as it had its own identity. This one felt like the devs wanted to make a game that was more mainstream and more akin to something like RE7 with more…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Boring, repetitive and overall dull game. The idea of the game is great but execution is just terrible. Why there is the same quest through out entire game(find something and deliver it 100 times until game ends)? Why would NPC speak only french? I wish they made them speak English in first place so we dont have to focus on subtitles but actually listen the dialogue.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like this game after the first "failed" me kinda hard. TLDR I waited 9 years to complete it, only to find it a shallow 3-piece game that should have been a 20 minute experience rather than a game. Kona 2 is definitely more polished. Better voice acting, majorly better graphics and atmosphere, etc. I found the story more compelling, and overall this could ..... COULD ..... have been amazing, but it falls down on each of its pillars so hard that it faceplants. The main…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Kona Brume offers a bit more information for players curious about what happened after the first game, but sadly I can’t recommend it, as it’s not for everyone. Although the map is larger, the story feels strangely linear with very little to do outside the main objectives, and some plot points (like Hamilton’s affair) feel irrelevant and add nothing to the overall mystery, while major questions such as Carl’s long-term effects from the Mistanite or how the town’s events reach the outside…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a let down for me because I can't complete it. It crashes every single time I go to leach lake. I've tried fully minimum settings, the different 'fixes' that has been posted, nothing works. I can run much more graphically demanding games without a single issue and my pc is not that old. It's a shame because this game was fun so far but how that crash hasn't been fixed when it's affected a lot of people is annoying. What a shame.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great sequel, better than the first game and that was very good too. Good investigation and if you liked the first game you have to play this, recommended
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First of all, you really should play the first game and then this one. The graphics are good. Voice acting isn't too bad. It is fairly well paced but not too many jump scares so far. Overall, not a bad game but worth a look at so 8/10
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a huge step up from the first one, A lot of it is excellent. The story telling and the puzzles and the metriodvania elements are top notch. There's definitely a couple of things I'd like to see improved for their next game, mainly the inventory economics and a couple of moments where it gets into fetch quest territory, traversal is much improved from the first one with a really nice fast travel mechanic but there's still a bit too much backtracking in a couple of places. There's a…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are two modes in which this game can be played. I chose Detective (non combat). I absolutely loved this game. There are so many places to explore. In Henryville, the house displayed Halloween decorations, and there were so many rooms in the mansion. Exploring the wilderness in the snow was excellent. I have not finished the game at this point, but I will soon. I love, love, love this game!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This was recommended as a Survival game which it is really not. Maybe inappropriately, it was likened to "The Long Dark", which it was not. This really was not an open world game, you had to pretty much follow a designated path. It was a cute game and I did like the addition of the dogs and sled. I also appreciated some of the puzzle dynamics.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For context, I really enjoyed Kona, so much so that I have gone back to play through it multiple times. I found Kona Brume to fall short of its predecessor, so while I still enjoyed my play through and recommend you give it a shot, perhaps wait for a sale (like I did). For the good, story was really interesting, wasn't expecting it to go this route so that was a fun surprise. I liked the varied environments in the different chapters. As always there's lots of different collectibles to keep…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First impressions, will update review later The narration/writing is okay, nothing outstanding so far. The introduction of the game is kinda boring and confusing, but some of it makes sense when you read the journal. The DOF is atrocious. It blurs everything that is not in focus way too much to the point of being distracting. I wish there was a slider to adjust it. I killed a wolf, walked over its body and fell through the map...then had to load and start back at the shelter.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the reasons for wanting to play this game was to enjoy the depictions of Canadian scenery while kayaking, trekking but I could hardly see anything because of the constant mist. . I know 'brume' means mist and is the whole point of the game but still for me, was overdone. On a good note, I really enjoyed the puzzles in the mine and the final battle was also good. - well done and well constructed.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Play the first Kona, then this one. A very fun and chill adventure. The only thing I'd really change is the mine section. A bit too much of an annoying backtracking experience there for me.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TLDR; Love the game, hope there is a conclusion coming (kona 3 or a novels series, I'm in) The bad : - There were some section of the game that were a bit tedious later on. - The animal lover achievement is still bugged, the devs were made aware in 2023. - There is one place where uou need to use a specific tool and it didn't seem to work at first. Had to check online. the geiker counter in the grotto reset the distance every path, makin it seems like it's not working The really…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's an OK game. Better than the first one I think. It seemed a lot better fleshed out overall and there's an actual pacing to the end rather than it just being cut short like the first one was. There's more to do and more to find/see and it ends up being twice as long as the first one because of it. Still fairly short though. Get it on sale.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →the first game was an open-ended detective exploration game. this one feels like a series of cutscenes with minor walking between, and some skyrim-tier simplistic environmental puzzles. huge disappointment. it's pretty, but it's painfully boring.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great story! Well written. Really loved the narration. A ton of backtracking but the setting was great!
