What people are saying

Mixed reception: praised for story and atmosphere, but criticized for save system and gameplay.

Players are split on Those Who Remain. Some praise its story and atmosphere, calling it a "nice little gem with a very deep story" and noting very good graphics and an amazing story line. Others find the narrative clichéd and the moral choices arbitrary. [7][10][8][35]

The save system and checkpoint placement are widely criticized as frustrating, with one player calling it "a disgrace" and another saying it makes it unplayable. Gameplay issues like cheap deaths, confusing puzzles, and janky mechanics also draw complaints. [22][29][8][36]

Not too shabby for a simple horror game. The game is fairly generic with somewhat of a decent story that has multiple endings. Nothing else positive really stick out to me. However, there is one thing I absolutely hated and it's the save points. They are a few and far between that it ruins the experience. Why do I need to do the same puzzles over and over again if I mess up, not only it's annoying but I also don't see any point of making such a decision, all it does is take precious time away…

Brain is required to solve some parts of the game, unfortunately I don't have enough brains. And the game's save system is a disgrace. When you die, it starts you from your own childhood loool. Buy chips with the money you give to this game and watch movies, you will get more efficiency.

Cannot recommend, even for fans of this style. The visuals are fine but the environments lack atmosphere. This is largely due to a bland soundscape, but also the lighting and post processing. The game focus on the contrast between areas of light and darkness, but what the game considers 'lit' and 'unlit' often has no relation to what you are actually seeing. A rooftop with no light at all is safe, but one meter away from a lamp is not? It's not always inconsistent, but often enough for it to…

Awful. Gameplay is going through a series of set pieces (levels) looking for items. Lots of opening of cabinet drawers. Sounds exciting, right? Then you get to judge people to death or forgiveness according to ludicrously superficial stakes. This guy did something really bad ... but he was going through some tough stuff himself. Wow, really makes you think, right? So deep. I'm not sure which is worse, the writing or the voice acting, but both excelled at draining me of all delight. Also, I…

What a joke. In my one hour gameplay, all I did was searching key objects without any lead. Those essentials can be hidden at any corner: a key hidden in a unimpressive drawer that you need to fully open a already half-opened gate; a fuse fully covered underneath a random box; a hotel key under the doormat in near darkness and player was given 0 hint, 0 lead at all. The graphic is not effective, a weird place like a huge glass window at a Motel. Many large spaces are unfilled, and the light…

4/10, only get if on sale/free and you have the patience to deal with annoying gameplay mechanics. I really tried to like this game. The visuals of the game are fine, definitely not top quality but maybe a lower end version of Bioshock 1. The mechanics and the story are the annoying aspects, however. First, while the idea of having to stay in the light is... fine? It's not the newest thing out there and applying it to the game itself brings instances of being just barely outside the range of…

In my opinion, you can only do one of two things. You either have a horror game based on darkness where you can hardly see anything, or you have a horror game about looking for and through a ton of stuff. If you've ever had to look for something in real life, like, say, your keys or your wallet, in the dark, in a cluttered room, and you have no idea where they could be, that is what this game feel like. It's not that it's impossible, or even hard; it's that I can just think to myself, do I want…

Gave up few hours in. Game is very tedious. Got really frustrated with running around from enemies trying not to be spotted there is no crouch so easily caught and if caught have to do the whole segment again. I cannot recommend even to people who enjoy these types of games.

Issues: - Too dark. Raising gamma doesn't really fix this. Obtuse puzzle filled horror games should have better lit areas than the average horror by default. - You will likely be insta-killed over and over on accident during exploration. The game's really unforgiving and vague on what constitutes a safe zone. (Everything within the area resets if you do, completely detracting from the suspense.) - Monster is a literal spotlight, again. This could be a pro or a con depending on your monster…

I don't like reviewing games without finishing them, but this one deserves it. From my playtime, I can tell you that this game has: - inconsistent game design. Early on, there are street lights that are clearly on but do not protect you from the monsters - Terrible checkpoint system. If you die, you're going back to the beginning of the level to redo your puzzles. - Ugly environments - Bad voice acting Those reasons aren't why I'm reviewing this. I wanted to like this game, but it's mediocre during it's best moments and obnoxious during its worst moments. Unfortunately, the bad moments are far more frequent than the former. The game is very janky. I frequently encountered issues with event triggers, enemy AI, and clipping through walls. Even if you can look past that, you are left with a low quality puzzle game with very, very light horror elements. Don't expect this game to provide any scares. If the plot were good, maybe the game…

Extremely cliche, heavy handed, and morally arbitrary. Makes an awful lot of excuses for bullying and corruption. Presents a false dichotomy between unearned, unconditional forgiveness and eternal damnation. It plays smoothly and is somewhat visually interesting, but the gameplay and visuals are not good enough to save it. I think this studio could make a good game, this just isn't it.

I wish I could have enjoyed the game. The atmosphere is really cool, the creature designs are pretty unique and..... that's all positives I can give. The story is mildly interesting, the "moral" choices are bland and the ending changes on whether you make good or bad choices, whose goodness and badness is very arbitrary. Letting a serial killer with a fully loaded gun, who has no intention of stopping serial killing, leave unharmed is apparently a morally good choice. The "puzzles" are…

I really wanted to like this game. Some of the "puzzle" interactions were creative. I like switching between worlds. The story was semi-interesting. What I couldn't take, like other reviewers, was after spending 10-15 minutes exploring & discovering, you get a cheap one shot kill for practically no reason then have to do the same thing all over again! Just another one of countless horror walking games you can play. At first it seemed promising, weird blue-eyed shadows, walking only in the light... than it evolved into walking into building, looking through all drawers, passing judgement and into new building doing the same. The controls are really clunky, due to weird physics in the game, you cant even properly move the chair out of the way. Only for those who like to scream into camera while streaming.

This was probably the most beautiful indie game I've ever played, and I hope to see more of this style. In regards to the story, I found it very thought provoking to be the one to pass judgement, and I do wish there was an option not to. I personally forgave Mark, as he's a child and has an entire life ahead of him. Condemned the police chief, and the firefighter. They were adults who could have chosen to do the right thing. A horror game about darkness, both figurative and literal, where the player needs to use light to stay safe. There are armed ghouls in the shadows that will kill you if you get to close, so most of the time you need to stay away and find ways to make them disappear. Sometimes it's not exactly perceivable where you can step in or not, and you might die a couple of times because you didn't get the distance right. Story is good, tragic of course, but horror needs tragedies.

I rarely leave a negative review on games but... This game is Masterclass on how to NOT tell a very good narrative story. It's filled with unneeded chase sequencies and overfilled with pointless puzzles that about 20% of them have to offer something on the whole story.
