Story - The narrative of the legion was what pulled me into the game. A lone train trying to make their way home through enemy territory is an enticing setting. - Unfortunately I find myself not really caring about the story or the characters. The writing was unfortunately quite mediocre, and even Langer isn't that memorable with barely a couple lines about his backstory. Also why did the story keep building towards …

A focused strategic game about a topic which hasn't been explored in games yet. It is a mix of tactical combat, resource management, and "base" building. Recommended - but it clearly runs out of balance by mid/late game. I like Last Train Home. The premise is strong, the road-trip pacing works, and the whole “keep the crew alive while dragging a train through chaos” vibe lands. So yes - more yes than no. Underexplored setting and narrative, I really enjoyed an honest story about Russia civil war. I got a lot of fun out of this game, but after 40 hours in I'm bored and I don't think I'll be coming back to it. Here's why. There are two main game modes. 89% of the 213 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Last Train Home. The complaint that keeps coming up: becomes repetitive in the later game. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

Critics, per Wikipedia

Last Train Home received "Generally Favorable Reviews" from critics on Metacritic receiving 80% from 29 reviews. The game also received 92% recommendation on review aggregator OpenCritic. The game was review bombed by Russian and Chinese nationals for perceived historical inaccuracy and for depicting the Bolsheviks as evil. After its release, the game ranked among the ten best-selling games worldwide on Steam, and in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the game was on the first place. At the 2023 Czech Game of the Year Awards, Last Train Home won the Czech game of the year award and Player's Choice award.

TDLR: Overall, Pretty good but too repetitive with flawed game design, get on sale (No more than $20) Combat - I wish the combat wasn't RTS but Turn based. It doesn't work well, as the fights divulge into a mess. Managing 8+ soldiers makes it too much of a chore. They really should have gone the 4-6 max soldier route and fleshed out attributes and the leveling up mechanics more. Combat trial and error - There are sections where units spawn in and appear out of nowhere when you trigger…

As a fan of base-building, pause-and-play tactical RTS games, history, and games with educational value, I can cautiously recommend this one to people with similar tastes. The game has its flaws—and quite a few of them. If you're not interested in the historical setting, you're probably better off looking elsewhere. Pros Pause-and-play RTS gameplay keeps the feel of turn-based tactics without slowing the game down. Covers a lesser-known historical conflict. Does a good job of showing the…

It's rare a game that criticize communism, or doesn't glazes over it at least. Even rarer a game that promotes nationalism, or shows it in a neutral-to-good light. This game does both in a not over-the-top way very well. Gameplay wise it's like Company of Heroes tactically (without the mp and not so good tho) + some rpg + base management. The stealth is somewaht crude tbh, stuff that should block enemy fov just doesn't. By act 4 I feel it started to get kinda repetitive. It also deserves…

I had high expectations for this game and what I got is not even close to what I expected. The game plays like early Baldur's Gate while leaning on some really bad stealth. So the combat has you move your pawns around between the vision of enemies, hoping to be able to stealth kill them before getting into a firefight. Your hope is to not ever engage in a firefight in the first place, just stealth killing everyone. Fights cost you health and ammo, stealth kills are free. This runs kinda…

This game is surprisingly good. I really respect the developers' decision to keep the dialogue in Czech, even though I don't understand a single word. Fortunately, the subtitles solve that problem perfectly. The lore is captivating, and I became interested enough in the story to do some research. I discovered that there really were trains full of Czechs crossing Russia during the October Revolution, which made the game even more fascinating. Overall, the game is solid. I encountered a few…

I pick this game up every winter, I don't play it much but it is the perfect winter game. In fact owning it for two years I am only 28 hours in, the story is amazing, you really sense the dread in every conflict and decision. Talk about an ax to grind! Last Train Home is mechanically excellent and, at its core, narratively solid. Yet there are a handful of distracting issues that, while the game remains fun to play, keep it from really glowing. Mechanically, the game is solid. The upgrade system is fun, and the resource and scavenging economy works reasonably well. There are times, however, when the balance feels strange. Some workshop upgrades are unreasonably expensive for improvements that barely matter,…

I enjoyed Last Train Home quite a bit. The Good - Very atmospheric; brings you into a part of history that not a whole lot of games do. - Graphics are good enough that sometimes you just want to look at your cool train for a while. - Combat is fun and dynamic. You can switch between stealthy and aggressive approaches, and they both work pretty well overall. There are fun chaotic moments, like when your scout turns a corner and finds a whole enemy patrol, then shoots one of them and runs…

This game is so good, but not perfect. As some people say it's very easy to exploit the AI once you have 5 snipers. But you can just not do that and play the game properly. I love the little stories and thd desperation. Really gives great immersion. If you are into tactics and strategy games with a great war story based on real life events to boot. You can't miss with this title.

If you're hoping for a Commandos-style game mixed with survival management, it's not exactly that. The mechanics are rather simple in both modes (train and action) but that's not a bad thing. The game is enjoyable and fun, the story keeps the title on track, and the tactics are rather easy but still require some thinking. Overall, it's a great title, and I hope we get another game in the style of Last “Something” Home. :)

For some reason, developers couldn't resist filling an otherwise decent survival RTS game with frankly confusing amounts of reactionary nationalist propaganda, whitewashing the Whites and the Legion and painting the Bolsheviks as some cartoonish villains that did nothing but plunder villages and murder innocents for lulz. The true history was far more nuanced and interesting.

A good game, decent RTS with some novel elements (more associated with the campaign story than game mechanics). There are a couple of things that really get under my skin though: 1.) Units do not feel well differentiated. While they get different skills, their behavior in combat does not feel different. For example; Scouts, equipped with sniper rifles, have the same functional engagement range (not sure if true in backend, but in reality this is what I have found) as all other units. They…

The tactical battles are excellent, but what I really liked is that the strategic side is just as good. Managing the train, your people, resources, where you go next etc all actually matters, and the two sides of the game work really well together. Its okay to good but nothing spectacular. On normal difficulty, you can easily exploit the economy system, and your only problem will be having insufficient storage space, seriously. I finished the game with 120k, enough Tier 3 weapons to equip a squad of ten men, 150 apple pies, 50 stimulants and over 3,000 rifle and machine gun rounds. Combat can be far more easily abused. Have 4 scouts, 1-2 machine guns, 1 grenadier and 1 medic in every squad. You only need the medic for some objectives,…

Ok, so i've played it through, never mind the hours, most of them in standby AFK. The game is fine, some nice mechanics, ok graphics, not many bugs, and of course- the story, ive picked it up because its not yet another generic story, so its good. But guys, you should've made the game twice shorter or you need extra game mechanics, cause after 50% of the game its just more of the same repetetive stuff, so i just honestly was playing automatically. Besides that its a good choice for 15$

Act 1 to 3 were quite good, first half of act 4 as well, but then the end of act 4 is immersion breaking to a point where I just dont feel like continuing. Combat wise its fine overall, especially grenades are nice bc of how limited yet strong they are. However the descriptions of skills are incorrect at times, such as critical shot, where it sometimes just doesnt work on exposed soldiers. Love the concept overall, love act 1 to 3 but man act 4 ruined it for me entirely.

This is a banger of a game that mixes management/survival and real time tactics. I was doubtful whether the genres would blend well together, but the game hooked me completely once I started playing. It has great storytelling and music, and the gameplay is quite multi-layered - exactly what you’d expect from a tactical management game. Prepare to sink a lot of hours into this one.

The Last Train Home is a pretty good game, but ultimately I decided I didn't want to put too much time into it. There's no particular reason why other than, I'd prefer a game like this to be played in rounds much like X-Com or Jagged Alliance not a RTS. This is a game where you can pause it (tactical mode) and plan your strategy but that only takes you so far before things play out in what ever way the game decides. When will Steam finally make a Mediocre button?! This game is exactly that, there's a lot of care for details and plenty stuff to work on and tweak in-game, but it only gets you for some time. Then it becomes somehow boring too quickly, I dunno why. But the worst for me is AI, it's just not too smart. You can easely cheese the whole scenario, and some of their movements are so brainless. A very interesting game. It's the scouting portion of Frostpunk, combined with CoH small squad combat and cover and a dash of Commandos infiltration. However, it has very little replayability and would play out in much the same way, assign the best people to the right jobs, get resources, infiltration instead of an all-out gunfight etc. Still worth getting as there are few interesting games at this time. Not regretting the purchase.

Classic RTS such as Empire Earth, Rise of Nations, Age of Empires, were bult on this idea of telling a story about a historical event, with a little fictionalization to make a narrative. From the outset it hits you with the crimes against humanity of the Red Army, and you don't stop seeing their atrocities and malfeasance the entire game. The White Army isn't portrayed as spotless heroes either, but they're not the unredeemed evil of their enemies. The…

Pretty good game, interesting story on a historical event of both Czechia and Russia, gameplay gets fun over time, resource management early on is super easy, but gets more challenging after chapter 3, combat feels like a puzzle and after understanding the mechanics and ranking up the squad its satisfying. Overall easy recommend for anyone who likes base management, RTS´s and History

Last Train Home is a great real time strategy game with some great concepts that make it feel quite unique, though it needs some compromises to be playable on the Steam Deck. A copy was provided by THQ Nordic for review! steamdeckhq.com/game-reviews...

GAMEPLAY: Last Train Home is a real time tactics game (as opposed to real time strategy or RTS). It allows you to control a squadron of up 10 soldiers (plus some additional reinforcements occasionally). You choose a squad composition of riflemen, grenadiers, machine gunners, scouts/snipers, and medics. You choose their passive perks, activatable abilities, equipment, and weapons prior to the mission. Once in the mission, you navigate the battlefield, fulfilling mission objectives and fighting.…

Really outstanding game in terms of atmosphere and decision making. Every random character on your train has its own story and personality and you grow increasingly attached to every one of them. Also, all of them can die horrible deaths, so keeping everyone alive became not just a strategic choice but also an emotional one. Real-time combat is also really fun, but can become very easy with a few tricks. Scouts and sneaking become absurdly broken throughout the game and can kind of kill the…

Extremely good game. My great grandpa was a legionnaire. I feel this does him justice.

One of the best games I have ever played. I am normally not into this genre but I have heavily enjoyed it. Best paried with the book:The March of the 70,000 which tells the real story. Must play for any fan of history or anyone who hates communist swine. The game is like a survival sim on the world map, almost like frostpunk but better. While the RTS style gameplay in missions is good. This game is very difficult if you play it how you will play. I will say the healing/management of some of…
