What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 160 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (219 of 267 positive).
Players praise the game's visuals, music, and nostalgic feel, but note its short length. [1][2] Many compare it to Final Fantasy VII, especially the Midgar section. [3][4][5] Some reviewers find the combat shallow and the price too high for the content. [6][7][8]

I've followed this game since it's failed kickstarter 2 years ago and as much as I'd like to recommend this game, it's just too lacking at present. It looks like classic FFVII, but seems to be imploying the FFVII Remake release strategy. It's like paying $30 for just the Midgar section. The combat is extremely barebones with only one magic equipped to each character (the same in fact) and you don't get any new …

I'm giving this a positive, but only just. The Good: I can tell a lot of love went into making every area in the game, and it looks and feels amazing. And the writing for the characters personalities makes you wish you would see more of them. Linux support is great to see, that's what put this game on the radar for me. The Bad: First off, this is incredibly short. I get that it's just part 1, but this is basically a …

First the negative: It's extremely short. I know it's just episode 1 but it's far too short. I finished it in just under 2 hours with about 80% completion overall. Some of that time was messing with menu settings too. Positives: Great characters, they are adorable together and I especially like Kuroko though they definitely compliment each other. Story seems like it is going to be good and like others have said, it …

First, let's get the bad parts out of the way: the episode is short (having finished the story in 2.6h, just missing some minor things), and combat is very simple (mostly similar attacks, one "orb", and your usual assortment of healing items). Music is alright, but somewhat unremarkable. Now, despite all that, I had a pretty good time. Characters are extremely likable and cute, with some fun dialog in between. The …

Solid but short. There are two paths, one for each of the characters Haru and Kuroko. Thus far, I've only done Haru's path, and that took roughly two hours. I imagine Kuroko's will take a similar amount of time, maybe less depending on how similar their paths are. The story is charming, but not extremely deep as of this episode. The graphics and gameplay are charming. The exploration is similar to that of the Final …

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has decent frame work to be something interesting but alot of flaws that prevents me from recommending the game. The early access is quite short, but it is visually appealing. The game lacks a proper battle tutorial and a tutorial on the orbs which does make the game a bit more annoying than it should be. My last complaint is the odd boss placement and level spikes in the game. I find it odd that that is minimal foreshadowing to prepare a player to get ready for a long fight. All of…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →TL;DR: This game has great potential, but 10 USD per ep is too much for too little content. Wait for a sale if you must. I'll be totally honest here: I really think this has a lot of potential. I liked the setting being built and I genuinely enjoyed playing this first episode. The reason this review is a down is because what I played and enjoyed here is not nearly enough for the price tag. I completed this entire episode in a single sitdown. For 10 USD, that's underwhelming. I got less than…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An homage to the "get the hell outta midgar" section of FF7. High quality, but a ripoff at $10 for what amounts to the tutorial section by JRPG standards If you can get it half-price, then it's good at being what it is--but even then, be warned: if you're not looking for FF7 nostalgia viewed through moe-colored glasses *specifically*, this isn't the game for you. This game BLEEDS ff7-Midgar visual aesthetic, and Kuroko and Haru are essentially Tifa and Cloud at age 15.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First things first, YOU may like the game. It's easy and cheap enough to give it a shot. However If time is valuable or you're not willing to part with a couple of bucks then you may want to avoid the game if you have the same philosophy of RPGs as me. I actually was warming up to the game up until the last boss. The boss was taking 0s from what seems to be the game's main damage-dealer. You can only attack it using its weakness to an extent, eventually you will run out of MP. Keep in mind…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is way to short for the price. First play through I was finished it in under 3 hours. I have gotten better play through from some demos. The game tries to trick you into a second play through with your partner as the lead but mostly it is just fluff to make you think you got more than a basic demo. Mini games are only difficult because of sloppy controls and power-ups are hard to get.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was admittedly disappointed with Light Fairytale Ep. 1. I liked its looks and adorable style, but the core of the gameplay and story fell short. The combat is very simple for anyone that has played a JRPG before. Being turn-based, you can select from simple melee attacks, a defensive posture, magic (with only one spell in the game!) and items. Beyond that, after taking a certain amount of damage, the two playable characters, Haru and Kuroko, can perform a group healing spell and massive…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The positive/negative system on Steam doesn't allow for a lot of nuance but I will try my best regardless. There is a lot to like here (sort of) in that the visuals and controls look and feel great for the most part. Perhaps I should say, look and feel acceptable. However, the attractive visuals make the flaws of the game all the more apparent. The tone incredibly juvenile, akin to a terrible anime translated by a team with no regard for subtlety; the pacing is all over the place moving far too…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's alright. Nothing too special. Full disclosure: I've been backing this developer on Patreon since 2016. With that out of the way, I think that this chapter is pretty alright considering that it's Chapter 1 of Early Access. The story beats are there. The mechanics are... flawed but alright. The characterizations get a little tropy (Kuroko being the tomboyish girl... even though she's both a monk and a better mage than Haru????). The 2 hours that I clocked in to beat it were good enough as…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As it is 'Episode 1' it is kinda short-ish, streched with a lot backtracking and there's a minigame you can't skip so you have to do it every time you need to cross that area... And that's anything negative I can say about this game. The Dev wanted "to bring back the immersion and emotion of 90's era JRPGs" and, oh boy, he succeded. This game feels more like the old Squenix-Games than they really were. Can't say much about the story since it is only the first chapter, but the few things that…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I hope that there is going to be some improvement in the upcoming episodes, since otherwise this attempt to make a FF VII style game is a huge letdown: There is just nothing that stands out about this game: the generic protagonist and story, relatively empty maps, a very basic combat system*, no skill/ attribute points to distribute and managing your gear is irelevant, since you need the little cash you have for healing items. I have no idea why you have to waste time searching for some…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Light Fairytale Episode 1 is not strictly a game. It's an advertisement/demo for a failed kickstarter (that they still want your money for). It's basically just a retro turn based JRPG with the usual visual novel style exposition that JRPGs rely on because they could never work out how to narrate their story through the medium of the game itself. Par for the low quality course when it comes to JRPGs. It's a common mistake when unfamiliar with Steam to launch demos/advertisements as full…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Definitely can’t recommend this game as a stand-alone, though that may change if/when he releases the complete story and bundles them together in some way. But as it stands, it is a very incomplete and barebones jrpg. But let’s start with some positives. Positives • Music: Definitely was the best part of this game. All the music sounds really good and enjoyable enough to listen to outside of the game. • Setting: While it really does come off being a pretty generic jrpg world, it is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a funny and shiny JRPG-like adventure, I say JRPG-like because JRPGs are suppose to be longer. That said, this game(like many others pointed out) is like FFVII but with somewhat more pixels. While I like the MC(Haru), I really think aside from hair color, Him and cloud from FFVII have nothing in common. -Haru has no niche in combat, he is worse than his teammate in everyway, less damage, speed, health, and no magical damage. -Haru has the dense male MC trope, and really doesn't really…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is stunning to look at and reminds me of the slums of FFVII. The description literally says "this project is to bring back the immersion and emotion of 90's era JRPGs" well, I felt some nostalgia and only want to play more of it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's pretty neat that they came up with this little bite sized JRPG, but even on sale for a couple of dollars, I can't actually recommend it. There might be hints of an interesting story, but the dialogue is rough, there's a lot of walking around and talking to people with confusing room transitions, and the combat doesn't bring anything unique to the table.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think I read that this was made by a single developer? It looks impressive, but it’s just a paid demo and nothing more. The game really borrows… I mean, “borrows”, a lot from Final Fantasy VII. The backgrounds are made in full 3D, but they look like the prerendered backgrounds of FF7, 8 and 9. The combat system is very simplistic, you equip materi- I mean, “orbs” and depending on the “orb” combo, you get different effects. Sadly in this demo, I only managed to find maybe 3 different “orb”…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Cinematic trailer looked very good but very different to actual gameplay. After about an hour I got borred. Some days later I returned back to the game and played it just to see where the story goes. It was quite shocking ending! Stuff I didn't enjoy in the game: Official tip: Go everywhere and speak to everyone - eh, really? Kind of repetitive and annoying music and sounds Very sudden ending and some pros: Nice story with a great potential for next episodes Graphics…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Now, in itself I am very impressed by the developer doing this as a single dev project. It also has certainly nice sides, like the character designs or the settings. As a game it is... kinda bad though. Half the game is just running around randomly trying to figure out what else the game wants from you. The combat is well, the less said about it the better. And while the Developer was very honest about it that doesn't change that the game is incredibly short.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Solid, very classic and simple JRPG. Great visuals, banging soundtrack, and well-written dialog. But it being very short (~2-3 hours single run) and a lacking combat system leaves desire for a lot more. Given this is an indie game, has native linux support and is quite cheap, its worth picking up if your into classic NES-era JRPGs and want to support an indie dev that put love into a product. However, it definitely feels early-access even if its being release in several parts. But the effort…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The problem with review a episodic game like this is that i'ts possible the next episodes get better, but EP.1 as It stands now is a huge disappointment. Story : the weakest part, pacing is all over the place dialogueis very generic and sometimes downright awkward . Characters: its about average, its not terrible but it super generic protagonist has a is a lazy kid with a childhood friend that he's clueless that likes him and the girl get pissed at how unaware he is. Music: This is actually…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is fun game in the Jrpg style but cannot recommend it as it is so short, far far too short. It's like paying for 1/10th of a game if you're lucky. Can be finished in less than 3 hours, not worth the purchase until there is a minimum of 10 times more content.

neutral · AI labelView post →Light FaryTale Episode 1 is a good start for turn-based game series. It has a cute style, a great soundtrack and pleasing mechanics. It's short, its duration is about 3 hours, but it will catch your interest to play future titles of this saga. If you like turn-based games, you have to give this game a try. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One can say many good things about this piece, but I just can't bring myself to give a positive. The visual part is great, characters are enjoyable, story is a bit simplistic and rough at the edges, but it has it's moments. No major complaints about game mechanics either: the minigames didn't tick with me, but to each his own. A bit upsetting is linearity, which is common for JPRGs, but here it's like absolutely zero choices or even side quests. But that is not the reason for the negative…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →CONS: - Too few fights(About 20 maybe for Haru story line which is 3h long) - Beginning hide and seek quest is boring, but I was lucky to get all 3 on first try. - Second character has 2 attacking weapons(gloves, boots) which seem to be the same, it would be nice if we got some variety from the start, perhaps 2 different elements, or 1 elemental and 1 physical. - Even on my high end PC, the game runs at 30 fps(instead of 60) at max settings. - Electic orb spell lvl 1 needs better effects/sfx,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Feels (almost) like final fantasy 7, with charming musics and graphics. How nostalgic. A great game with great "plot"tential. Can't wait for full version, and keep up the good work neko.works :) Pro tip: check every corner. Coz that's just how you play "classic retro" rpg games.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The graphics are really good and has a nice style to it but I can't say much for the story as I haven't played enough of that. The characters are likeable although it felt like they played tropes a lot. The reason I didn't want to continue with this game is the combat, the combat for turn based games is too important, your attacks have little to no feeling of impact. At best you were hitting them with light slaps and the audio for fighting wasn't engaging at all.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Light Fairytale Episode 1 is a role-playing game that embraces the spirit of classic Japanese RPG adventures while presenting its ideas through a cleaner and more modern structure. Developed and published by miyu.works, the game serves as the beginning chapter of a larger episodic journey, placing storytelling, character development, and exploration at the center of the experience. Rather than aiming for enormous worlds filled with endless side activities, it focuses on creating a tightly paced…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played through the "normal" story, probably will come back and play the alternate one. It's not that it's the best game ever, it's actually kind of a super-clunky DS game. It doesn't do -anything- interesting mechanically, there's no meaningful progression or exploration. It does have character, and a lot of love was clearly poured into it. It's just ... I don't know, charming I guess. I fired it up just to take a look, and wound up finishing the first play through in one sitting (which is VERY…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Recommended on sale for fans of turn-based RPGs and Final Fantasy who don't mind a much shorter and more limited episodic series. You may wish to wait until all the episodes are complete if you mind abrupt endings and major cliffhangers. I would recommend Final Fantasy VII and Septerra Core first as they are similar and much more fleshed out, and this game takes a lot of inspiration from FFVII in particular. +Artwork, cinematics, environments +Music, atmosphere +FF7 Midgar-like city +Story,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Adorable episodic jRPG which unabashedly wears its inspirations on its sleeves. Surprisingly gorgeous visuals, this one-man-team has released something special indeed, a genuinely enjoyable - albeit frightfully short - first episode in a planned series of four. Basic but fun combat, serviceable music, fabulous visuals, and a rose-tinted glasses view of the classic turn-based RPGs of old. I enjoyed it! Onto Episode 2 now :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →PROS -Fantastic art, including the chibi, anime, and the drawings. -Music is good, reminds me a lot of Final Fantasy 7. -Majority sound effects are excellent. -Interesting story/characters. -Side "quests" reveal details about characters, which is nice CONS -I thought JRPG + Episode 1 would be maybe at least 5-10 hours of content, but what I really got was 2 hours from 1 (out of 2) stories. -Thus only took me almost 5 hours to 100% achievement. -The two stories have their differences in…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has a very FFVII Midgar Vibe to it... And it's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ tease. Just when I was starting to get into it... It ends. I hope the next episode has a bit more effort put into the story length. If this is how the whole series is going to be, then I wont waste my money on the next one.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Too short. Controls are clunky and the characters' movements are actively annoying. You can feel how unresponsive it is. Characters are cliche, and they're just really exaggerated archetypes that you've seen before.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got this on sale. First, it's great. It's a JPRG in a classic FF7 mold. If that's what you want it scratches that itch very well. On the minus side it's only about 3 hours of content. That's it. So, catch it on sale. That said, I can't wait for the next installment and will definitely get it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is very chibi like. Its very interesting and new way to play a game, the only problem I've encouter so far is just their set controls are the controls, we can't change them but oh well, no big deal. The main thing about this is the story, its basically a tsundere flat chest girl with a dumb guy with a fetish with cute things and don't understand her feeling at all. Great game, i recommand giving it a try.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →IT'S SO ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ CUTE THIS GAME EVEN THE MONSTER/ENEMIES WERE CUTE.......... Well except one rat....... The music in this game............ is ever so good actually no not good BLOODY AMAZING AND SO CATCHY!!!! Also all the music you hear just fits with everthing you see in the game. The RPG combat works so well and not all that hard to understand on what to do. The game is funny, cute and overall AMAZING 10/10 Can't wait to see EPISODE 2.

neutral · AI labelView post →Ayy, I couldn't believe it when I saw the stereoscopic 3D! I hooked my Steam Deck up to my 55" 3D HDTV and sure enough, it worked! The 3D isn't exceptional by any means, and all it really seems to do is make the text windows pop out, but it was really cool seeing it as a feature! More games should do this!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →"Finished" Light Fairytale Episode 1. That was... way too short and way too slow overall. Battles, UI, everything. Definitely wants to be FF7. Which was kind of annoying. Less, "homage" and more "no, but I want to BE it".
