What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 276 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (8,789 of 10,015 positive).
Many players find the game fun and enjoyable, praising its fresh pirate theme and Majima's character. [1][2][3] Some reviewers criticize the game for feeling shallow, lacking depth, and having technical issues like crashes. [4][5][6] A few players note the game reuses assets and feels like a spin-off rather than a full entry. [7][8][9]

Shameless money grab, avoid. The whole premise of this game is that you get to play as Majima, and that there is naval combat atop a pirate ship. Both of these are present in the game, but only technically; you could have easily removed both and the game would be mostly the same. Probably the biggest complaint I have is that the story is impressively terrible: Majima gets amnesia from the get-go, and lets some …

Has to be the most over-hated game in the franchise. It's genuinely shaping up to be in my top three. It feels fresh for a franchise that has had the same storytelling style and same tropes for 20 years, and people hate on it! Meanwhile, the combat is fun as hell, the environments are some of the most breath-taking ones in the franchise, the new cast of characters is well written... People made me think this would …

It's alright. The game feels a bit all over the place honestly. Combat is fun but the naval gameplay is super shallow. Story is just okay, but makes you go back and forth all the time for everything. On a big sale, it's worth it (if you like Yakuza), but I wouldn’t recommend it at full price.

For any die hard Yakuza fans, this side installment might scratch an itch for more Majima/Yakuza content you might desire. For any casual players, this is probably the one game that adds almost zero things to the overarching lore lol. No one will be mad if you skip it. That being said, the game is fun. I liked Honolulu in Y8 so much I jumped back in with way too much enthusiasm. The pirate system they've introduced …

Good fun, fun localisation, glad that Majima finally got his own story and as bananas and technically optional as it is, it ties directly into the main story of LAD and Infinite Wealth and I really recommend everyone play Mad Dog: Black Flag - Child Endangerment Edition Disclosure: My wife worked on it, I'm so proud of her.

positive · AI labelView post →I'm having really hard time whether to give this game a positive or negative. Treat this as neutral. It's an okay Yakuza game. Fun combat (except ship battles), good music. Graphics are getting worse each release and the game is crashing a lot. I was really trying to find positive arguments for this release, of course there's a lot of positive about this game but some stuff really needs to be said and finally changed. RGG yearly releases are slowly getting out of hand, quality wise. Repeating…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the most "mid" phoned in game in series. It feels like a fan mod made using bits of Infinite wealth. The dialogue is stupid, the setting and levels look rushed compared to the other recent games. Crashes to desktop with no warning randomly. ANNOYING ASS CHILD CHARACTER IN EVERY DIALOGUE, I don't mind haruka in the older games but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ I just started skipping all the parts with Noah (so basically all of it), why bother playing a yakuza game at that point. This just feels like they…

What you're looking at is a Yakuza game at its core, but with polish missing. Polish that we are used to because, well, RGG once were the kings at reuse. The resources saved by reusing existing assets used to go towards making sure everything else was up to snuff. Now... it's being used to pump something out in a quick timeline, forgetting entirely about the…

positive · AI labelView post →All style, no substance Pirate Yakuza is more of the same but without the charm previous entries had. Yakuza 0 was the peak of the series with Yakuza: LaD being a close second. The only thing that might be interesting in the game is that you can play as Majima but that's it. The Naval Combat and the Pirate stuff in general are either clunky or things you have seen before but with the Pirate caption. The ship is slow while exploring and the fights either take too long or are way to short to…

I whole heartedly recommend playing this game. It helps to play other yakuza games, but you definitely don't have to in order to enjoy this. Only issue I have with this game is it has issues with crashing that I hope RGG fixes at some point. Otherwise an absolute amazing game.
