It's cool to see this project come to fruition, especially since I used to follow it relatively early in its development! I love the premise, and the art is absolutely gorgeous. Unfortunately, the game struggles to fully commit to exploring its premise, consequently making it harder for me to get invested. It's a game with so much love and heart put into it that it rips at the seams and spills out. I've been following the development of this game since the first demo and I feel so happy to finally see it completed. This is going to be a "thumbs up with a caveat" type of review - since this is a game that, while I found it enjoyable, it is very story driven and political - so that may be a turnoff for some people. The game, its premise, and the gameplay proper are well done, and will be straightforward to get into the groove of for anyone who enjoys the RPG genre. This game is about war, but more importantly, it's about the cost of war on civilians and those that get caught in the cross-hairs, in front and behind the gun. This game touched many human experiences, and I could tell that this game was a labor of love from its developers. 80% of the 181 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Long Gone Days. The complaint that keeps coming up: slow combat animations. Deal-breaker or nitpick?

Critics, per Wikipedia

On Metacritic, Long Gone Days received mixed reviews for Windows and positive reviews for the Switch. Although they praised the morale mechanic, Hardcore Gamer criticized what they felt were an "inconsistent tone and unconvincing meshing of visual styles". RPGamer praised the combat, visuals, and music, but they felt the pacing was too fast to cover the subject matter. RPGFan made it an editor's choice and called it "a gorgeously poignant game". RPG Site enjoyed the story and said the combat was "decently balanced". They recommended it to fans of narrative role-playing games set in the modern world.

TLDR review: Forgiving and recruiting a guy who murdered children and trafficked women is needed for the ‘good’ ending. What did they mean by this? Longer review: First, the good. The character design and overall art direction is great. The main cast is likeable. There's a foundation here that could have made a good story. That's more or less the only praise I have for this game. I'll summarize using their listed features on the Steam page. A Nuanced Look at War: Experience the clash of…

I really wanted to like this game, so before I ramble on about why I dropped it and don't recommend it I'm going to point out some of the stuff I really liked: - the artwork is clean, professional and well integrated - the large sprites are expressive and stylish - there is a wonderful attention to detail regarding the different cultures and locations - the RPG elements are present but not intrusive. No random battles or exp/money grinding. Mechanically the game is very simple. Occasional RPG…

TL;DR This is an unusually conflicted review for me, and the game did keep me interested for most of its duration (which is much shorter than my playtime would indicate, I left it AFK at one point), but I can't recommend it at full price. I got it very cheap on sale personally, and that's what I'd recommend. However, it's overrated in my opinion, and I'll go on to explain why. PRESENTATION - The store page is misleading. Technically sound and beautifully presented yet irreconcilably dull. It desperately wants to be a topical war drama and a feel-good cartoon at the same time, ending up doing neither convincingly. Characters seem to have a devil-may-care attitude even when their entire way of life unravels around them, which wouldn't be a problem if the game wasn't hellbent on reminding you this is a serious game, with serious themes like false flag operations, minority persecution and child killing. The…

Really tempted to jokingly label it as "Metal Gear Undertale". This is an indie JRPG that combined a pretty grounded for a JRPG scifi plot involving modern war... and also a story about friendship. Generally it sticks very closely to this older JRPG canon of having parties, equipment giving stat boosts, taking turns using abilities or attacks or items, travelling trough locales and engaging in dialogue, all that. It's faithful to older 2D JRPGs to a fault, despite more modern art style it can…

I wish there was a way to give Long Gone Days a "Meh" review. As there is not, I'm going to go ahead and give it a negative one just to try and temper the overwhelmingly positive score the game now has. The game promises a mature and political story about war and its consequences, set in a dystopian alternate universe which hits close to home given the current global situation. The setting is quite good, and the idea of a shadowy PMC calling the shots and destabilizing democratic countries in…

interesting concepts; wasted opportunities. I have very mixed feelings about Long Gone Days, especially as I continued to play which ultimately ended up with me having a negative conclusion rather than a positive one. Lone Gone Days has some very neat concepts story- and character-wise, some good and fun animations and cute possible character interactions. But. It never really commits to anything substantial. Sniping minigame? Happens three times. That's it. The language barriers? Barely…

But my goodness, the story is very profound disappointment. Spoilers to follow for obvious reasons. The story hooked me to start, with a pretty interesting cutscene. Private oblivious is introduced to us through this cutscene that adds the foundation for Rourke, but nothing more is added to his character other than the fact that…

This review contains slight spoilers about the first few hours of the game, read within your own discretion. Long Gone Days has good art, charismatic characters and plenty of polished animations and cutscenes. You can tell these parts were made with care and it has a good story premise, but it falls short immediately during the first hour of the game because of the characters’ highly unrealistic behaviors. The initial point of the plot revolves around Rourke, a member of a mercenary group…

Long Gone Days is a classic-style 2D RPG with turn-based battles. In terms of gameplay and mechanics it's very familiar and reminiscent of the 2D RPGs we're used to. However, it's not just another medieval fantasy story that we've seen many times already. The story here takes place in a modern day world (possibly very near future). We start as part of a top secret special force of young soldiers who have been trained since childhood and who undertake important missions around the globe.…

I was quite excited for this game, i felt it could be really good. But i don't think it lives up to its potential. First of all: the english translation isn't great: there are some typos. But more importantly: the characters don't speak very... naturally. Like mostly saying "We are" instead of "We're". That could make sense for some of the characters, as english isn't their first language, but even those who've seemingly spoken english their entire lives don't talk in a way that a native…

Language element is respectable Cons: 1. SLLLLOOOOOOOOOWW Text Speed, you will wait 20-30 seconds just for the text to roll out, even if you hold V to fast-forward it's still slow, especially in combat. 2. Summary Long Gone Days is a game where I mostly tolerated the gameplay in order to experience the story. Despite advertising itself as a modern JRPG, I would say the moment to moment gameplay was subpar compared to titles thirty years prior such as Final Fantasy I. While the story was intriguing enough to keep my playing, the short length made wanting a little more as not all the characters were as arc'd out as I would have liked. Overall, I would give Long Gone Days a 6/10. Given the length…

A very nice JRPG/VN. I would say it is a VN with some light RPG mechanics, so if you want a JRPG first, this might not be for you. The JRPG mechanics are all decent, nothing spectacular but good enough to stay interesting. The story and characters for the first 2 acts were great, I really enjoyed the party in this game. The third act regrettably feels very rushed, and even though I got the good ending, it felt over too quickly. Despite that, I really enjoyed the game! The language barriers…

Good game. The description calls it a JRPG, but I would argue it’s more of a visual novel with JRPG-like presentation exploring for items and NPCs with limited turn based combat. I like that it’s a tight story without being longer than maybe 10-12 hrs. It doesn’t waste your time with filler. I love that. It’s also a very prescient story in our current day. More enjoyable for the story and atmosphere than the battles. Battles are fine, but more of a stylish add-on (you don’t earn exp. so no…

I'm in the middle of 100%ing this, but I love this game. There's so much charm and heart and soul in the game. The art style is wonderful and gorgeous to look at, the characters are engaging and believable. The story is heart wrenching in all the right ways. I adore this game, and highly recommend.

I bought this as part of the Serenity forge humble bundle. Story was engaging. Felt connected to each of the characters. Some strong parallels between what is happening in the game vs real life. I thought the use of multiple languages was a nice touch. I ended up using a translator for some of the dialogue segments, it had a nice charm. My only gripe is that there's some achievements you can completely miss that require you to go back to a previous save or restart the game again to get. Wish…

A nice nuanced story and decent pixel art, but very little actual game play. Terrible interface, though. Every little thing takes half a second too long for comfort. And no way to change the keybinding. Recommended if you want a story about the horrors and uncertainties of war from the perspective of everyday people. And if you don't mind to read a lot and do very little else. And press the X key a lot. A lot!

What if [insert indie RPG developer] made Call of Duty? Long Gone Days tells a powerful story of a soldier by the name of Rourke who deserts from his private military company after realising he committed a war crime, in so, he roams around Europe, meeting new people, luckily befriending them instead of killing them. It's a JRPG where instead of fighting with swords and magic, you fight with guns and grenades while it touches on the themes of human connections to and during conflict. The game…

Has a unique combat system and gameplay that blends JRPGs and point and click adventure games. I played it in two sittings as it felt like reading a good book that I couldn't put down. Better writing than most $70 AAA games. Highly recommend !

A very good story about co-operation and a take down of the military industrial complex held together with some fantastic sprite work and character writing
