LOOM™
Developer LucasArts
Loom is a 1990 fantasy-themed graphic adventure game developed and published by Lucasfilm Games for MS-DOS. The project was led by Brian Moriarty, a former Infocom employee and author of classic text adventures Wishbringer (1985), Trinity (1986), and Beyond Zork (1987). It was the fourth game to use the SCUMM adventure game engine, and the first of those to avoid the verb–object interface introduced in Maniac… From Wikipedia (CC BY-SA 4.0)

What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 188 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (644 of 719 positive).
Players praise Loom for its unique music-based magic system and enchanting atmosphere. [1][2][3] Some note the Steam version lacks content compared to original releases. [4][5][6] Many recommend playing with a notepad to record musical spells. [7][2][8]

Loom is a great game. The interface of using musical notes to perform magic spells is unique and hasn't been replicated much since then (notable examples would be the Ocarina of time). The puzzles are decent and there's a mix of puzzles with different skill levels. The story is great and there are lots of engaging characters who you really want to talk to or help. It is the standard story of "bad guy taking over the …

Once more, a reminder that it takes a simple press of Alt+S to remove that ugly "modern" filter. Loom may have been the first title to make young me realize that, yes, video games can be art. A highly experimental "anomaly" in the Lucasfilm/LucasArts catalogue, it is concentrated on story and atmosphere rather than puzzles, and it also features a very original approach to the latter, based on musical magic spells …

A magical and enchanting game, unlike anything I’ve experienced before in the genre. Loom focuses on learning different drafts—short musical sequences—to solve its puzzles. This creates a fresh, memorable twist on the point-and-click formula, and it’s the kind of game where you’ll want a pen and paper nearby; remembering all the tunes on your own is nearly impossible. The story draws inspiration from "The Ugly …

Do I recommend Loom? Absolutely! It's a lighthearted adventure that wants nothing more than to give you a unique fairy tale with relatively easy puzzles and chill vibes. Do I recommend this Steam VGA version of Loom? Meh, it's good enough but pales in comparison to the EGA version. I played them both back-to-back before writing this. What's different? A lot. Most notably the EGA version has the most gorgeous art …

92% of the 188 Steam reviewers we collected recommend LOOM™. The complaint that keeps coming up: steam version has cut content. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
According to Rogue Leaders: The Story of LucasArts, Loom was a critical success, but "failed to sell in sufficient numbers to warrant sequels". Orson Scott Card praised Loom, writing in Compute! that it was "like nothing you've ever seen (or done) before ... a work of storytelling art," and cited the game's flexibility in adapting to playstyles, whether using action or puzzles. Dragon gave the game 5 out of 5 stars. Scorpia of Computer Gaming World approved of the game's graphics and gameplay, but said that "as an adventure game, it is just too lightweight." She stated that the game was impossible to fail, with very easy puzzles, but that the linear gameplay resulted in no freedom of…

positive · AI labelView post →In 1993, my mom shattered the disc of this game because my brother and I were arguing over who was allowed to play it and when. I wouldn't cry like that again for 15 more years.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I had the pleasure to help my partner with her #jacquard #loom, debug something that can rip your arm off! The better web dev! Hard to say what did it in the end: - Wiresharked traffic between PC and loom - it's telnet, no UDP, have to listen actively! - measured some traces, confirmed 5V signal from the hall sensor - wiggled some connectors, like the loom's network card - reprogrammed the motor controller to utilize+isolate the other two hall sensors #weaving #jacqpoint #reverseengineering

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well, the blatant advertisement for LOOM (tm) in The Secret of Monkey Island worked on me, although it took 30 years... A good short adventure game, engaging but very simple compared to some other LucasArts classics. Not very hard to stay on track. Nice to see a fully voice acted game, although I hear it led to them removing a lot of content which is too bad. The Swan Lake music really elevates this game to classic status in my eyes, though. Open up a text file while you play, or bring a…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are some games that entertain you, some that challenge you, and then there are the rare few that feel like they enchant you. Loom is one of those games. It doesn’t bombard you with combat or complex mechanics; instead, it invites you into a world woven with music, mystery, and quiet melancholy. You step into the role of Bobbin Threadbare, a reluctant hero and the last of the Weavers, armed only with a distaff and the ability to shape reality through song. Magic here isn’t about casting…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Never would have thought point & click meets music would match but it does! I am by no means a musician, I couldn't tell you what note is what sound, I can't read any sheet music, but this game actually works for me. It's a shame it never got an official sequel since it ends on a kind of cliff-hanger; however the journey is worth it. Unfortunately there is no "ultimate edition" for Loom because all the different variations (the DOS version, the TurboGrafx version, etc) all lack something…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I was a big fan of point and click games back in the day but somehow missed this game back then. I found it quite charming! It took me a little while to figure out how the game worked but after that it was quite straight forward. I found it rather slow paced - the dude walks quite slowly around the game world but as it's such a short game anyway it didn't really matter much. I've not played another game quite like it; it is quite original! The voice acting is good and some of it quite…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Absolutely loved this game! Underrated classic in the point-and-click genre. Effective worldbuilding, loved the lore (this would have been a fabulous classic fantasy movie, a la Neverending Story or Labyrinth.) Wish it was longer! I cannot recommend this game more!! I would recommend having a notepad or Sticky Notes application pulled up alongside it, to record the spell combinations and their effects.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loom was an unexpected treat. While the VGA PC CD-ROM version does not quite match the handcrafted beauty of the original EGA DOS release with its stunning 16-bit color, dithered backgrounds, and painterly aesthetic, it still preserves the game's most remarkable feature: its music-based interface. At a time when most adventure games relied on cumbersome text commands, Loom stood out as a seamless and elegant experience. It helped define the point-and-click adventure genre and set a new standard…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Runs perfectly well on steamdeck. The only thing you need to do is map the F5 keyboard key to an unused control so you can save an load games. Once done, the game plays flawlessly and was fun to revisit after several decades.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loom is one of the most beautiful pixel art games I've ever played. Although a very short point and click adventure style game that most players will be able to get through in an afternoon, it features an engaging story, unique mechanics, and a bizarre but engaging ending that makes me wish the other two planned games had gotten made. Worth your time if you enjoy vintage games and want to explore a story that is both weirder and more whimsical that what the modern game landscape offers.…

Used to play this all the time with my brother when it came out on floppy disk. We'd write all the spells inside of the Book of Spells as we uncovered with secrets of the Weavers. Can't recommend this game enough.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I read the top reviews for this game before buying and falsely convinced myself that I needed to play the EGA version that does not come from the Steam purchase. So, I tried to follow the directions to get the EGA version installed, but I had difficulty getting ScummVM installed and functional because I am playing on Steam Deck and I am Linux illiterate. I ultimately realized that I already had ScummVm built into my Steam copy of Curse of Monkey Island, so if you're curious, yes, you can…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loom is an odd adventure game. Developed by the same company which, just two years before, created a complex and very challenging adventure, it is a small experiment deliberately restraining itself to a single gameplay element. Whoever first thought of making an adventure game consisting entirely of playing four-note melodies (called "drafts" in the game) on a magician's staff masquerading as a spinning tool deserves an award for one of the most original ideas ever conceived for this genre.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loved it! 'Was genuinely surprised how fun and fresh a point&click from 1990 can be. The story is an adaptation of the Swan Lake, but very original nonetheless. The core mechanic is super interesting and fun, just beware - be an oldschool player, take a pen and paper and write it down, otherwise you might soft-lock yourself from continuing. Super surprising was the quality of voice acting in this time. It was fun, short, it's difficult at times and I had to look for a guide here and there,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this looks interesting but it plays awful. can't seem to adjust the tiny window, the audio clips in and out, and then the game just kinda stopped taking my inputs when I was 15 awkward minutes in and I had to restart the whole thing. I usually don't say this but it would probably be better to watch it than to try to play it. A long play of it is less than 2 hours long lol
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's definitely a good game, love the magic system, my only complaint is that the plot felt too short and ends on a cliffhanger. I understand that like Inherit the Earth, there was talk of sequels for this that never came, but this feels like it ends on a more "Give me more! How can you end the plot here?!" kind of point. Anyways thanks for listening to my rant, good game, definitely recommend.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm hurt after playing this game that I didn't find it sooner. I've never played a game with such a unique and fun way of using magic.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quite simply one of the best games of its genre ever made. The world, the story, the magic mechanics, all timeless classics. The only regret I have is that LucasArts never made a sequel.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a game that was probably better when you got it in physical form, as that apparently included an audio drama detailing the lore and an in-universe list of weavings, giving you a hint of what each one you pick up might be. And after playing through from start to finish, I feel like this is a game that lives and dies on its lore, little of which is sadly included in the game itself. With the lore, this game is an epic journey into a unique and fascinating world. Without the lore, this…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A short but enjoyable memory from my childhood. It's really too bad there wasn't more to this game, but it was the 90's. Great for kids to learn a smidge of music reading and note memorization for the spells while solving the puzzles in the game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun short game, but do yourself a HUGE favor and write down every spell combination as you find it. You'll thank yourself later
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I absolutely LOVED this game! It was clever, refreshing and unique. I also thought the voice acting was incredible! Reeeally left me in want of a second one.... ;) If you like this, chances are you will also like "escape from Lala (1 and 2)" and "Oknytt".

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Edit: It seems as though the CD-ROM version available on Steam has a lot of cut content such as character close-ups, dialogue, and puzzles. Because of this, I would advise you to view this as a review strictly based on my experiences with said version and would recommend looking into acquiring and playing the Amiga version instead. LOOM is an odd one and if I had to give it a rating it would probably be about 5/10 but I cannot bring myself to give it a negative review. What truly separates…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loom is a fun and charming game with an interesting world and unique way of interacting it. Unfortunately, while this version does have voiced characters, some dialogue and scenes have been cut. I'd recommend the FM-Towns version run through ScummVM, which one can find with a quick google search if one wants a fuller experience. The EGA version is also the creator's preferred version, which completely uncensored, so that version is recommended as well. Finally, listening to the audio drama,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Point and click classic. Be prepared to write down the music spells. This used to have a handy booklet that I heard rumors about. A cozy old fashioned LucasArts adventure. Give it try, but keep in mind mileage may vary as everything is very easy once you know what to do. Also - Beware the Audio Jumpscare! A few seconds after it loads you will be loudly instructed to Choose Your Skill Level! Do it or she comes back!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loom is a truly magical experience. The puzzles of Loom are the star of the show! Unlike most point & click adventures, the player doesn't collect items to influence the environment. Instead, it is the creative use of music that holds the key to progress. As you learn more 'drafts', you become more powerful. Since this is a game from 1990, you have to jot down your own notes. A wise spellweaver always writes in pencil. My other favourite thing about Loom is the worldbuilding. If you skip over…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loom one of the classics if you haven't played it yet what are you waiting for.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Loved the idea and execution. There's a certain, stoic charm to late 80s/early 90s voice acting and the accompanying soundtrack is lovely. Despite the technical limitations they managed to craft an enchanting game experience. It's a shame it couldn't be longer or the sequels never came to fruition.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think this game surprisingly aged well! The puzzles are simple and the game might be pretty short, but the distaff mechanic is so unique that it's so fun to play. The crazy fantastical story too is really enjoyable. Though after a google search I find out this version removed most of the background music and edited down cutscenes, I still pretty much enjoyed the whole experience. Really recommend this to point-and-click and puzzle fans out there!
