What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 202 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (278 of 303 positive).
Players praise the unique cartography puzzle mechanic and cozy atmosphere. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the game can feel buggy or imprecise, and the tools need improvement. [4][5][6] A few players find the game not for everyone, requiring patience and a sense of geometry. [7][8][9]

Fun idea, unfun execution. I love the idea of mapping out an island bit by bit, connecting landmarks and using various tools to create reference points and slowly puzzling out an accurate map. Sadly the game disagrees this is fun and provides ample oppertunity to get in the way with vague objectives and game mechanics that slow down the game and distract from this core premise. Ontop of this, the tools provided are …

Even though I generally don't play a lot of cozy games, this is a real gem. If you loved the treasure hunting from Sea Of Thieves, but could live without the annoying griefers and wished for a bit more complexity in the puzzles, you definetly should give MapMap a try! Along with the soundtrack, adorable characters and picturesque islands, it is just pure cozy FunFun ;)

I finished this game in about 8 hours. There is still optional content for me to go back to and explore. While I would recommend the game in its current state, I should add that it does feel buggy at times and some features feel lacking. The concept is really cute, you try to find specific points on islands, following a story along the way, discovering the history of an ancient race. The art is lovely, and the music …

Recommend is such a funny thing here. Map Map is a good game, as does what it does well, but I don't think this is for everybody, I think you need a strong sense of geometry and some amount of stubborness to enjoy this game. It does not hold your hand, and it can be hard to figure out what you are supposed to really be doing. Certainly try the demo before you buy this one.

Map Map finally got released and it’s exactly what I expected, a beautiful, cozy game about cartography and exploration. The art style is lovely, the pacing is really nice, and there's something weirdly addictive about slowly filling in those blank patches on the map It’s a nice and relaxing game, perfect to unwind. Highly recommend if you like low-stakes, charming indie games!

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a solid game if you're into this kind of thing. It turns out I'm not. No shade on the game whatsoever, it's just not for me. It reminds of an earlier, experimental time in my life when my friend Niko and I mapped out the lines of each others souls beneath the midsummer night sky. I genuinely cannot fault this game, the faults lie only with my appetites.

neutral · AI labelView post →How often do you really get to do something genuinely different in a game? Fight here, grind levels there, manage an economy on the left, build something on the right... But surveying islands, triangulating locations, and creating your own map from scratch? That’s not something you see every day. It’s wonderfully engaging in this laid-back kind of way — you catch yourself muttering things like: “Ah damn, those 0.2 meters! ... Yeah, I probably could’ve done that better.” Map Map is a…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A "game about maps" that quickly turns into cheap platforming Pretty typical case of good idea, botched execution. Unfocused and uninspired level design cobbled together using 2 dozen or so assets. The core gameplay loop is landing a small island, and using landmarks and the shoreline as reference points, you mark the desired spot GeoGuessr-style. Finish marking them, and hop onto the next level/island. You don't actually chart a map or fill it in (you have the tools, but have zero incentive…

I tried it at NextFest and really enjoyed it, it almost feels like it was made for me because I love surveying and the process of surveying - studied a field adjancent to it and surveying and map making were my favourite bits. Felt like it was a great attempt at gameifying the process, turning it into a fun and engaging game loop. And really loved the world building and characters, definite neurodivergent feel to a lot of them and feels like nice…

neutral · AI labelView post →I would seriously pay AAA price for this game at 4-5x size. The mechanics and tools are amazing, I only wish that you could erase pencil and pen separately and maybe have some color options. I love how you can jump into a map and solve it in minutes, or "waste" hours drawing in every detail of the map just for the fun of it. I've played this game for 9 hours, and 8 of that was just adding every little detail to a the maps. If Map Map released an expansion or made a Map map 2 I am…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Starts out really strong, and it feels really good to fill out the map. However, you spend too little time in each map, and quickly move to having virtually no map at all and relying heavily on trial and error. And the story is so saccharine as to be grating. Grade: D

positive · AI labelView post →Wonderful little game that I thorougly enjoyed. If you want to fully enjoy this game, you need to take a deep breath and relax. Trying to "grind" this game is tedious, as you need to explore the islands thoroughly to find all optional treasures. If you can rid yourself of that impatient completionist urge and engage with the game as a cozy, relaxing activity that just lets you wonder, then you are in for a treat, and every discovered clue and treasure will reward you greatly for figuring it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Sadly later maps are a real disappointment. I was hoping that the game would eventually have tools to precisely measure where a landmark is, but there is no way to get exact compass directions or angles on most late maps. Since half the map is missing and direct walking lines are often blocked, this results in a lot of guesswork. To pad the runtime, the developers added platforming challenges where e.g. you need to precisely land with a glider in a specific spot.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Map Map is a very cute game, with a core premise I don't think I've seen before elsewhere, and it's done well. I just wish it had avoided a couple of issues that made the game feel like more of a chore and less like the childlike whimsical adventure that its ham-fisted writing tries to frame itself as. My first, most egregious complaint is that the last tool you unlock in the game, the sextant, allows you to tell the distance of an object, as well as the change in altitude between your…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →npcs in the game repeatedly mention/laugh at you when you're wrong to an annoying degree lol. i don't support the AI usage for translations either (if they're willing to use it there... some of the sprites looked kinda weird too but i might be completely wrong on that part) but my biggest reason for the refund is i was just not having fun with it. which is a shame because i really wanted to. the game did not deserve to be copied by hoyoverse either so i was willing to try it in the spirit of…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish there was a more middle ground option, but I think it just was a bit strict in the markings and that was really just getting in the way of the fun for me.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game! I already loved the demo, so I'm excited to play more islands. Love the cartography puzzles, the hidden treasures and how you can customize your maps! Very cozy <3

positive · AI labelView post →Map Map is a game I have had on my wishlist for about as long as it has been available for wishlisting, and a game I had really looked forward to. A game about mapping out stuff, stepping out distances, inspecting landmarks, circling the compass on map, I had really big expectations for this game, it seemed to feature a game mechanic that I had never seen before in my long gaming career. First few maps started of great, you got a landmark, stepped out distances, great fun was had. And…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I somehow thought this would be something more. you can play every map by just spamming the marker down and it tells you how close you are of the right location. if you're real lazy you don't need to move at all. there is treasures if you're into that. so run around finding the clues and then spam the shovel to the ground. I thought drawing on the map would've been an actual mechanic here but it just for you. no need to do that at all unless you like role playing. really wasn't for me and i…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is great. It's very very picky about placing your marker, which is 10/10 for me especially since it's a game about precise mapping. I admit though, I don't play the game as intended. I like to use all the markers and stickers to graph the island before working on the missions. I assume they expected some people to play this way, otherwise their wouldn't be so many customization options, but keep in mind, unless you want to map everything, the actual missions take about 10min per…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game started quite nice but when I reached the swamp in the second half I got so annoyed. You get a divider from the beginning but no ruler. That's fine for the first few maps but it makes things unnecessarily complicated later on. Same for a magnetic compass. I see that a compass would've made the game much easier but I would appreciate more difficult tasks with the right set of tools rather than making simple tasks artificially difficult by removing the basic tools. When I got the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Map Map: A Game About Maps (!) was a very fun cartographic experience. It was so nice to interact with a map that didn't place a marker for my character, forcing me to interact with counting steps, landmarks, compasses for triangulation, and eventually sextants was a puzzley delight. Very satisfying. One thing I loved: seeing photos of the dev team across the years as they worked on the game helped underscore this as a very human project. One thing I was less enthusiastic for: the cutesy…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really like the idea of the game but it does not give you the tools you need to be as accutate as it demands. only so many times you can figure out a location palce a pin and get told you only get 2 stars because you are 0.1 steps away without the games starting to feel more frustrating than satisfying. especially when the game does not give you tools to be that accurate.

neutral · AI labelView post →Great concept, but fails to deliver. The pacing is too slow, where most tools are only unlocked after mid game, this includes tools that make your life easier like the magnetic compass and range finder, or the ability to plant flags, so you spend 99% of the game just measuring distances with steps and drawing circles, and it gets repetitive. I wish there would be more triangulation tools, to measure azimuths or horizontal angel between points, to make the game strategy more varied. Instead,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A cute game about surveying and navigating with simple tools. The writing and art style are evocative of a childrens book, but the problem-solving required to complete some of the challenges is such that you don't feel like you're playing a game made for kids. You're given objects or features in the game world to plot on a map that's usually just the coastline of whatever island you're on (and sometimes not even that- later maps frequently have large blank spots for you to fill in), and a very…

positive · AI labelView post →Dang. I want more of this kind of puzzle. The game itself is a little too “cute” for my taste, but this is truly a novel puzzle mechanic. Could be called Surveyor Sim and I’d play the heck out of it. One complaint: The divider usability needs work and it should always show its size. Measurement is tedious.

While it is easy enough to breeze through the first dozen levels, once verticality and incomplete maps and difficult terrain come into play, the task of marking even a prominent landmark can be quite the puzzle, often with multiple solutions that allow for creative problem solving. While the story is nothing to write home about, the characters are charming and their childish banter…
