What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 219 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (4,520 of 7,498 positive).
Some reviewers consider it a downgrade from previous titles, citing missing features and poor AI. [1][2][3] A few players recommend it for its single-player content and editor, while others call it abandoned. [4][5][6]

I think people can sometimes be way too harsh on niche genres like RTS games, especially when a game doesn't perfectly match what they expected or isn't exactly like their favorite game in the genre. Yeah, this game has its bugs and flaws, but overall I find it pretty enjoyable. If you can pick it up on sale for a decent price, I'd say give it a chance. There are certain niche genres where reviews seem way more …

I skipped the campaign and jumped straight into 5v5 multiplayer on Men of War II with members of my gaming community. Six hours disappeared. At one point I held off a 12-tank push with a Panzer V A. I got battered. Constantly flanked. Under relentless pressure. But with support from my good friend John — supposedly our artillery guy, yet somehow pulling off infantry heroics — we held the line. Moments like that are …

I’m glad I paid only 3 euros for this game — in my opinion, it’s not worth even that. Men of War 2 feels like a drastic step backwards for a series that was once known for its depth, realism, and demanding tactical gameplay. The graphics have been noticeably simplified, to the point where it feels like the game was designed with consoles as the primary target rather than PC players who appreciated the original …

The game is a huge downgrade from Men of War Assault Squad 2. They removed the skirmish vs AI modes. You cannot fight to capture flags, or spawn units to fight with friends. They primarily focused on PVP combat amongst players which ruined the franchise.

I’ve been a huge fan of the original Men of War and Men of War: Assault Squad titles — they were exceptionally well-crafted RTS games. The ability to deploy squads complete with specialists like Squad Leaders, Medics, and BAR operators added a real sense of authenticity. Battles felt gritty and realistic, and reorganising your forces after a hard-fought push against enemy positions gave the gameplay real depth. Both …

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I play the Men of War titles almost exclusively to create scenarios for myself using the mission editor. I have been a long-time fan of previous titles in the series, and have contributed missions to the workshop for AS2. I absolutely adore the sandbox, create-any-scenario opportunities that this series' editor provides. Unfortunately, I stayed away from this release due to the subpar reviews. I really wish I had purchased the game earlier and made up my own mind . It seems like a lot of the…

No Is it better to wait for a sale? 70% sale and only after you purchase CTA: Gates of Hell I have never felt so sad to leave a negative review for a game that is clearly trying so hard to appeal to its remaining fans that the developers have openly asked players to upvote it in order to convince executives and publishers that the project…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I Bought Every Men Of War And This Is The First TIme I Hate One. +You can select more units at once now +Still has the editor (How almost everyone finds this game) -It's Worse then MOWAS2 in every way -Missing so many nations -Mods are dead as game is dead -Cant go in houses anymore -Cant place men in windows -Same assets nothing new, I Even found hint narrator from original MOW -The Ai clumps up and gets stuck all the time -The Unit faces look all the same and theres a massive lack of…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Short version: In my opinion its a steaming pile of ♥♥♥♥, DO NOT BUY IT! If you played the previous entries (MoW, MoWAS1 and 2) and you are looking for the same experience you will be greatly disappointed. Long version: I remember when a demo came out, I told myself that it just needs more time in the oven. The game released and it still felt like a beta. Then I waited because I have soft spot for this franchise, and recently bought the game because I deluded myself the devs might have fixed…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is honestly worse than Gate of Hell and Men of War: Assault Squad 2 It’s a disaster. The defense building mechanics are completely broken, the physics don’t work properly, and it’s far from realistic. Overall, it performs very poorly. Unit controls are neither smooth nor logical, which makes the gameplay frustrating. Gate of Hell is way better than this game. Wtf Men of War: Assault Squad 2 was far superior to this game. The only advantage this one has is slightly better graphics,…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A Veteran's Review. I have been playing this for 10 hours now. Let's start right off the bat, when you play this game, play the tutorial. Do not try to figure this out on your own or by jumping into a random mission. I have been with this series since 2004, and I can’t bloody figure out what I’m doing. Everything you have honed for two decades has been thrown in the trash. They completely changed the UI. They implemented a point system to unlock units, as well as certain unit rosters that are…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The whole "MEN OF WAR" franchise does find an end with this one. Especially with the fact that it has to be the "always online" mentality today. You will get thrown into the multplayer tab right from the start, even if you do not want to play multiplay in any way! Sound effects are just so dull and even the color scheme is bad cause oversaturation. Go and play GATES OF HELL instead. Might be a buggy mess but you'll see and hear the difference! Especially the FACT to read "CONNECTING TO THE…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't waste your money I bought it when it first came out and in 2026 it's still an awful game. go buy Call to Arms: Gates of Hell if you want a decent RTS experience.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This entry in the men of war franchise is a testament to the enshittification of gaming . If you want a good RTS play assault squad 2 , not this , not under any circumstances .
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was loking foward to the game. Bought it despite the bad reviews, most vere about people being dissapointed in the game rather than specifying what it was. The gmae crashed within the first 10 minutes of me opening it. The cover sistem so so bad, you cant take cover behind obstacles you should be able to such as a large rock. The unit ai is awfull. Troops dont start shooting even if there is enemy troops within a few meters form them. You can't order a vehicle to turn on the spot by holding…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Waited for over a year now for the game to go on a decent sale to try it, due to all the negative reviews, but figured how bad could it be? Even at $!5 i feel robbed and that i wasted my money on an incredibly sub-par game. Best to save your money and keep playing Call To Arms.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do yourself a favor and don't buy this game expecting an improvement over Men of War: Assault Squad 1 or 2. It isn't. If you're coming from the older Men of War games, especially Assault Squad 1 and 2, don't expect Men of War II to be a better or more modern version of the same experience. In many ways, it is actually a downgrade. I played the game shortly after release, and even back then, I struggled to understand what the point of this new entry was. There wasn't much that felt genuinely…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →RTS usually aren’t my thing, way too fast. But this one? Total gem. Been grinding Conquest non-stop… seriously addictive. I am approaching this game with an open mind, despite the criticizm I read. Suggest everyone to do the same.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Do not buy. Waste of money. Don't even know why this game exists, didn't add any features onto MOW AS2, the campaign sucks and is overly difficult, not in a fun way. Tanks wont shoot unless theyre 5 feet in front of an enemy, at which point the artillery 40 miles away in the back of the map will kill all of your units. Buggy, ai is brain dead, I don't know how you could take RTS perfection like MOW AS2, gut basic features, and release it. DO NOT BUY.

neutral · AI labelView post →This game is a huge disappointment. The controls somehow got worse, the graphics are downgraded, and nothing feels intuitive. Getting into cover is inconsistent and frustrating, and the squad AI behaves like it has no sense of awareness or logic. Every part of the gameplay feels like a step backward.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Broken AI and absurd unit behavior — unplayable in its current state I tested Men of War II and the experience was extremely frustrating due to the AI and unit behavior, especially infantry. A clear example: I ordered a mortar infantry unit to move to a specific point on the map. On the way, there were stone walls. Instead of finding a path, going around, or choosing a logical route, the unit moved in a straight line and started destroying the walls, as if it were an armored vehicle. This…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →There are lots of issues during the campaigns. Some orders are complicated to understand, specially during the German campaign, the mission (gain foothold in the coastal black) the enemy keep coming and destroyed all my forces then the same mission repeated again and I have only one soldier so really I get bored and left it because I repeated it more than seven times. For example, in the Russian campaign, I reached more than 60% but the saved games were removed due to an unknown error.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Title: What Happened to This Series? 0/10 I don't hand out 0/10 reviews lightly, but Men of War II earned it. As someone who loved Men of War: Assault Squad 2, I honestly don't know what happened here. Somewhere along the way, the developers completely lost sight of what made these games special. The gritty, tactical, rewarding gameplay that defined the series feels absent, replaced with something that feels watered down and far less engaging. To be fair, I only have just under an…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game made me depressed. I spent an hour just staring at the ceiling thinking about old times I’ll never get to experience again. I loved Men of War Assault Squad 2 (MOWAS2). This game gave me hope of something similar with an active player base so I can finally play the game I love with real players again. In reality it was a broken, way worse game mechanics and honestly worse graphics. It did not feel or look like the old game I love. And I couldn’t even continue the campaign after…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The graphics are beautiful but the gameplay is awful, I got this on sale and still feel cheated out of my money XD As a long time Men of War fan I thought I'd give this a go, the AI is awful, playing singleplayer on easy difficulty, a squad of 5 German Grenadiers behind cover could not kill a single US rifleman, later in the same game two grenadiers were firing at a US soldier, no one was in cover but the US solider killed both right away. The overall AI of the game ruins it completely, if…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish I could refund this game....games change over the years that's expected. However, this is like how Assassins Creed changed from a stealth action game like most old awesome Ubisoft games, to appeal to kids, rpg boring, the sword I have isn't good enough I need to go find one that's got a purple inventory icon even though they are graphically the same exact sword in every which way just the purple inventory icon on one so it does a lot more damage. Yeah that kind of level of change…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →still sh*t. can't turn off fog of war, and there is even an option in the settings called "fog of war: enabled/disabled" but all it does is remove the actual "fog" affect for performance... and it's not even under the video settings... what a joke haha.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty enjoyable. I think people are too harsh on this game, but from what I can gather those are largely people who played the previous titles in the franchise quite a bit. As a relatively fresh player to Men of War I think this is something of a nice half way point between Gates of Hell and Company of Heroes.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →unplayable crash fest, lazy cashgrab, open the game: crash make a lobby, crash start a game: crash a 12 year old game such as mowasII is 1000 times better than this insult to the playerbase
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I get all the bad reviews now. they could have done a better job their older games were fantastic
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bro I used to pray for times like this. For this game of all things to come back with updated graphics and even more fluid gameplay. I was so wishful and excited that I willingly chose to ignore the people saying it was horrid. Today, I waited till the final 2 hours of the sale because I was certain I would find no game more enjoyable and fun. Well ♥♥♥♥ me blue I was wrong, I was so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wrong, like; I looked at this ♥♥♥♥ and really though "Yea I could fix that" or "Yea I'd tap" and ended up…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After more than a decade since the last mainline entry, Men of War II finally arrives to carry the torch of one of the most tactical and immersive real-time strategy series ever made. Developed by Best Way and published by Fulqrum Publishing, this long-awaited sequel sets out to modernize the franchise while keeping the gritty realism, dynamic battlefields, and deep micromanagement that veterans cherish. The result is a game that captures the chaos and complexity of World War II combat with…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →overall the game is lackluster in gameplay and A.I. the AI which was once a great strong point of the game feels like its been taken back and made simply dumb. they will stand in the open when youve told them to move, the will drop grenades at their own feet or my fave part, will run right upto the target then throw the grenade. simply put the graphics are awesome but the game in general feels striped back and dumbed down from its previous games
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →bad optimization , and forcing online-play is highly unreasonable.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Im glad i gave this game a try. I seen all the negative reviews and thought this game was crap. I enjoyed MWAS2 and GOH ostfront, and i enjoy Men of War 2 as well. If you like these other games and know that this game is just different, you will probably enjoy this game as well, especially if you enjoy single player content. There is a ton of single player content. Does it do anything better than gates of hell? mmm not really.... i would say that gates of hell is a supior game for sure, but…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really enjoyed the first Men of War as well as Red Tide. This game looks better than the others graphically and plays almost identically. There are some new options in the GUI and it seems a bit more intuitive than previous games. If you enjoyed the others, you will also like this one. I never played the multiplayer though and really only do single player campaigns. It really is a lot of fun.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game is great if you are into the thrill of comanding your own soldiers and vhiecles. i also find it a great way to pass the time as 1 mission could take a hr or 2 to complete depending on the mini missions you have to complete
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I initially left a negative review, but after spending some more time in this game, I actually really like it. It's a nice balance between Company of Heroes and Call to Arms Gates of Hell Ostfront. I find that in some ways, I actually prefer this to CTA if my main concern isn't realism. Development unfortunately seems to have slowed down, but I believe there is great potential in this game. If you're looking for a direct sequel to MoW Assault Squad 2, this isn't it, but it is a fun game, and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So im here to post a positive review. Ive only played a few hrs but as a GOH Ostfront veteran and old school SHOWW2 player I feel the haters and GOH fanboys have unjustly beat this game and Bestway down for no valid reasons. If you had played the original SHOWW2 you would have a better understanding what Best Way were trying to achieve here. I held off for quite awhile to buy because of the review bombs and im glad i finally did buy it. I could talk about where it cr@ps all over Gates of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Update: been playing for a while, and even tried to give it a second chance. Honestly, the game is disappointing. While there are a few new features I enjoy, many of them feel unnecessary or frustrating. The gameplay is slower and harder to control compared to MOW AS2. Cutscenes drag on, with characters talking endlessly, and worst of all, you can’t skip them. Overall, the game feels clunky and less engaging. It really disappointed me, and I can only hope the next game will be better.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think the game did many things right in comparison to MoW: AS2. The scenario is definitely better (i.e. exists), the QoL things, like highlighting the content of the target before reaching it and marking the distance to the targets when aiming with large guns. The possibility to pick a "specialized" batallion for the missions is an amazing idea, too! Despite very clear improvements in one regard, what made me pissed and frustrated, is the command point limit. I.e. you cannot deploy more than…

neutral · AI labelView post →I loved MOW1 and MOW assault squad2 but this game, is worse the game is not the same quality that I was expected and the optimization is very pure my laptop barely run it, MOW assault squad is 32 bit and have better optimization and quality, I was not expecting to be like this worse. graphics could more better, the gameplay is worse than ever even MOW controls are better than this, the missions are very boring ! you are making a strategic game do not let me control with only 3 soldiers like…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am surprised by other reviers since I really enjoyed this game. I played similar games and previous titles of Man of War and I think this is one of the better one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I Played the game for some hours to make am Fair Judgement and here are the issues: 1. Idk why, but they key controls are WAYYYY different from what the Men of War Assault Squad always used, Call to Arms Gates of Hell stands more to what Men of War Was with the keys 2.I cant separate some units, idk if am that stupid or of thats an Games Feature 3. The tank UI feels more like World Of Tanks... 4. In the Campaign, every enemy is carring ANTI-TANK Grenades which onehits the tanks i guess that…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a load of rubbish! Complete 2 missions and it no longer saves so can no longer progress because it will not unlock the next mission. Reinstalled 3 times and repeated the mission several times. Save your money.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A far, FAR worse version of MOW AS2, and drastically inferior to GOH Ostfront. I see no reason for anyone to waste money or time on this if they can grab the other two titles.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Let’s start with the so-called “beta tester” review that has been floating around near the top of this page. The author claims to have tested the game, criticizes the division system, and accuses the developers of “begging players to upvote the game.” None of that holds up under even basic scrutiny. First, the top reviewer's “beta tester” claim. Both the private and public testing phases for Men of War II were run through Steam, and all participants’ playtime carried over to their main…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Very badly organized. Should never use storage in c:\users\username. This should be decided by the user. Same with mods.... storage location should not be in c:\users..... Modes are very hard to work with. Stucture of the game has change & it has become difficult to work with. As a result, I very seldom play it. Wish I had not purchased it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →People review bombing this very fun game just hate change. The multiplayer is very fun, I enjoy having to unlock new battalions or units because it gives you something to work towards. That being said, due to the review bombing, it has seemed to have lost some support. I guess people just want the same copy and paste RTS games with updated graphics. People said the same thing about Company of Heroes 3, and look how fun that one is. I would say this game is similar to Gates of Hell Ostfront…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like it. But it's a very dead game. you will end up with the same 20 people all the time... and the devs dont care for the multiplayer. needs major balancing, new units/factions and bug fixing.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not worth playing, play older games, Anti-aircraft guns will shred your heavy armour in 2 seconds flat, unbelievable. I have never played with a worser AI in my entire life, they will spin around in circles when you give simple orders like move forward, they will continue to shoot at an enemy even if that enemy is not capable of being hit E.G. they will continue to shoot at a hill if an enemy is behind said hill and wont stop unless you give them a different order, not like other RTS where they…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Seeing all the negative reviews is kind of shocking, its just a modern MoW with QoL and micro improvments as well as way better AI than the previous games and GoH. The dynamic campaings against AI are very cool.
