Overview I just finished (or rather, was forced to stop) playing Moonscars. At its core, the game is an absolute blast—a stylish, aggressive 2D action-platformer with satisfying combat and a dark, atmospheric world. I made it through roughly 70% of the content and thoroughly enjoyed what I played. Unfortunately, a well-known game-breaking glitch abruptly ended my run. Despite developer responses and multiple …

This project was created out of love for the soulslike genre. Short 2D game immediately captivated me with its dark and atmospheric style. Moonscars utilizes a minimal color palette. A muted range of dark grays accented by red, creating a unique charm. The game's artist drew inspiration from the oil paintings of Old Dutch Masters like Rembrandt. Each frame of animation was hand-drawn, resulting in highly detailed …

A hauntingly beautiful 2D souls-like that feels carved from oil and sorrow. Combat is sharp and weighty once you learn its rhythm. The parries sting, dodges matter, and every victory feels earned. The world bleeds atmosphere, painted in shades of ash and regret, and while the story is more cryptic than cohesive, it fits the tone perfectly. It has flaws, but the art, combat and maybe the music make up for it. A …

What a special game. I feel lucky to have found Moonscars. It seems not to resonate with everyone, but something about it really sings to me. To put everything I love about this game into one idea, Moonscars has vision. To be more thorough... the art style and animation are like nothing else I've seen: liquid pixels, like living paint on an ancient screen. The combat is fun, fast, and variable. If you like parrying, …

This was a fantastic metroidvania. It was not perfect, it had very little forced backtracking and "exploration only" upgrades, you really only get one. It does wear its inspiration on its sleeve, maybe a little to obviously and it is a bit short. But the combat is legendary, the story is great, and it is worth replaying. I beat this one 3 times to 100% it so that should tell you something. Is it the next Hollow …

83% of the 180 Steam reviewers we collected recommend Moonscars. The complaint that keeps coming up: game-breaking bugs reported by some players. Deal-breaker or nitpick?
Critics, per Wikipedia
According to review aggregator website Metacritic, the PC version of Moonscars has received "generally favorable reviews", while the PlayStation 5 and Switch versions have received "Mixed or average reviews". Nintendo World Report rated the game a 5/10, praising the game's art style and options in combat, but criticizing the high level of difficulty and the rarity of the Gland items. Rock Paper Shotgun similarly praised the artsyle and compared the game to Castlevania, but considered the Blood Moon mechanic of increased difficulty to be a punishing addition. Nintendo Life said that the game was reminiscent of Dead Cells and liked how it deviated from other Soulslike games with its combat,…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If you love Blasphemous - you will love this! I loved the game. This is a classic Metroidvania - like a lovebaby of Blasphemous, Bloodborne and - somehow - Hollow knight, in the best way. I only wish there were multiple endings. Bosses could have been more difficult for sure (maybe not the last one). Music, art, story - all great. Combat is smooth and flowy. I love the difficulty system (pale/blood moon system). I enjoyed my 16.5 hours spent in game and can heartly recommend it!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Moonscars reminded me very much of Blasphemous, which I absolutely loved. But. PROS: - Amazing ambiance, pixel art and animations. Great job - Controls are good CONS: - Hard as hell, I don't get people's attraction to very hard games. Enemies are everywhere, extremely aggressive, relentless, fast, have a long range, and will remove half of your health bar with one hit. Sometimes I can't even manage to survive 30 seconds just dodging enemies and running away because you WILL get hit or…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Moonscars is visually stunning, with breathtaking pixel art and an intriguing concept, but unfortunately, its visuals alone weren’t enough to carry me through the game. 1. While the art style is gorgeous, the color palette feels monotonous and lacking in variety. I understand it's set in a post-apocalyptic world of mud sculptures, but the limited tones left the environment feeling a bit bland to me. 2. The upgrade system is underwhelming and lacks excitement. Most perks are centered around…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Holy crap-on-a-stick... people weren't kidding about mid-game. It's absolutely A$$. Early game is fine. It's even more than fine. It's fun! Then you get to the castle, and fun just jumps out of a 57 story window, while on fire, and being shot at with the sniper rifles from Halo. Parry window is completely fine. But then you get these enemies with a jumping/lunging attack, and the parry window wishes you good luck and peaces the f**k out. As if that's not bad enough, you're constantly getting…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →please ignore the negative reviews, this game is a stunning piece of indie art. While the story remains largely abstract in the beginning, the game does an excellent job with providing tid bits of lore as you progress. Theres a levelling system that resets with each death, rewarding you for staying alive for longer periods of time. The parrying does take some getting used to but like with every game the trick is to not panic and to learn the enemy movesets, they arent as complicated as it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →🎮 Gameplay 🔲 Excellent 🔲 Good ✅ Average 🔲 Poor 🔲 Staring at Walls is better Moonscars delivers a tight, deliberate combat loop rooted in precision and punishment. As Grey Irma, every encounter demands patience, stamina management, and mastery of parries. Combat feels fight, blades clash with satisfying impact, and perfectly timed counters create moments of razor-sharp intensity. That said, upgrades are lackluster and so are charms. Additionally, the Bloodmoon system complicates…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, it’s quite a mediocre game. To begin with, it’s not a metroidvania — it’s a very linear game, and the map even tells you exactly where to use the upgrades you obtain. The art style is good and the animations are solid. The combat is fun at first, but it quickly stagnates and becomes tedious; it doesn’t really evolve as the game progresses. The story is rather obtuse, and the dialog boxes make it feel like an old mobile game.

neutral · AI labelView post →There are no saves. If you do a quest wrong (which there is barely or no any explanation for) you are locked out permanently and have to complete the ENTIRE game over again. The game is mostly linear and I was trying my best to do see the whole story, now I cant. Would not reccomend
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It didn’t blow my mind but I enjoyed it enough to do as much as I could in one playthrough. I would barely call it a metroidvania, it’s more simple and straightforward action, a 2D soulslike. Less difficult but adjustable with equips and world mechanics rather than a setting. I liked the lore and the somber, otherworldly feel. Combat felt good for the most part. Beautiful opening cutscene that draws you in, but it doesn’t really manage to maintain that initial awe.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As there's no option for NEUTRAL vote, It saddens me that I have to give this a thumbs-down. the game seemed very promising, I liked the dark vibes, the art style, the mechanics*, the OST. but, the game falls short on few aspect and It ends up feeling very bland (at least to me) the premise of the story starts off nice. but, throughout the game things start to get very confusing. as a few players pointed this out in terms of graphics, I'm inclined to agree with them. even though the pixel…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An age-old question is whether we have free will. And if we do, to what extent? Are our actions our own? Is the eye reading this conscious of its actions? And what about the hand that jotted it? Do things just happen, or is it Mea culpa? Really great, if short, Soulslike Metroidvania. Where hope is snuffed out but never completely gone, and it's as confusing and bleak as expected from this marriage of genres. The game is simple and straightforward compared to other bigger-budget MVs,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Randomizing and clearing my backlog 60/343 I played for about 6 more hours offline out of town. This is one of the best soulslike metroidvanias I have ever played. Absolutely incredible.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →At first, the pixel art catches the eye and the combat is quite fun, but after 3–4 hours you realize that’s pretty much all the game has to offer. It makes a good first impression, but quickly becomes repetitive and monotonous, with uninteresting environments that feel copy-pasted together to form a so-called “cohesive” map.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Not for everyone I suppose. Assuming the launch experience was very different, coming off a play through of the game patched it was definitely enjoyable. In some aspects it comes off like something poorly translated, which can be confusing but adds to the weirdness imo. Secrets only amount to bonus currency the large majority of the time. The game world isnt gigantic (10 or so hours for a full run) nor too hard to navigate. The combat is forgiving if youre good with timing dodges and parries,…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's alright but as others have said it is basically a worse Poundland version of Blasphemous. The combat is very basic and outside of the final zone the game is oddly really easy, I'm not particularly good at 2D Souls-like games but in the whole playthough I died a total 5 times. Only 2 of these deaths were in combat and none were to bosses. The game has a very basic roguelite system where you get up to 5 random buffs which persist until you die, no idea why this is even in the game, it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →From the beginning I felt it could be a rough one as it was missing audio from a few subtitles in the intro. But then I started appreciating the art style. It doesn't feel like pixel art, but more like a painting. Music and sounds are fitting the world. Combat is pretty good. And there was a giant cat.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Legitimately surprised this is not more popular within the genre. Gameplay is very fun, very fluid and satisfying. The art is beautiful and the color scheme they used is very unique and fits the themes of the game so well. The writing and music could be a bit better but overall its a phenomenal MV. Very good game.

positive · AI labelView post →stumbled upon this game by coincidence, knew nothing, watched no videos and decided to give it a try. what a lovely gamble that was. such an original story and a unique universe. gameplay is beautiful, like an illegitimate child of dead cells and salt and sanctuary. mechanics are simple and intuitive. the difficulty curve is easy to grasp but not a pushover by any means. soundtrack is beautiful and very atmospheric. level designs are great but boss fights might be considered easy compared to…

I wish I could replay it again for the first time, its story and atmosphere had me entranced and fascinated, with gameplay and mechanics to match, not to mention the beautiful soundtrack. I felt only the lack of Voice Acting through dialogues. The map system is the best I've seen, extremely practical and useful. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I reccomend the game good boss design, great combat system great visualy but i have some qritiques 1. the price of the game for the ammount of content is too much 2. the bosses are too easy i'cve beaten zoran first try 3. too many keys a like ability based metroidvania progression more 4.the flying guys that you can only attack woth spells (selfexplanatory)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love short indie metroidvanias in general, but I cannot recommend Moonscars. In spite of its impressive visuals and surface polish, beneath that it's made quite carelessly and guarantees as much frustration as enjoyment. The gameplay is heavily focused on combat, but the enemies are too spongy, do too much damage and are difficult to stagger, meaning that enemy encounters are always threatening to spill out of control toward a sudden and unexpected death. This would be frustrating enough…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really enjoyed this game. The combat feels good, the story is well written and the art is beautiful. I would definitely recommend it if you like souls likes.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Monotonous visuals, contrived story convoluted just for the sake of being "mysterious", sloppy and floaty combat that ends up in life-shortening hit trades as well as spams from flying enemies, since your attacks don't even stun foes. It feels like the parry doesn't even work half the time with the short timing window and issues fighting enemies occupying the exact same space as you. Just frustrating.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ultimately, I rate my experience with this game as positive. I enjoyed the atmosphere and narrative, which made it enjoyable to play, but unfortunately, the gameplay itself is mediocre (combat, exploration, abilities, progression are all mediocre) and is further dragged down by the absolutely abysmal death system. In this game, not only do you lose all your currency upon death (which I have no problem with), but death also resets all bonuses you've earned through leveling (which is completely…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Moonscars is a brooding and uncompromising 2D action-platformer that wears its gothic identity boldly on its sleeve. Developed by Black Mermaid and published by Humble Games, it stands apart with its painterly pixel-art aesthetic and its unrelenting devotion to punishing, Soulslike combat. From the moment Grey Irma steps into the moonlit ruins that form the backbone of the game’s world, Moonscars establishes itself not as a power fantasy, but as a harsh pilgrimage through decay, despair, and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I would give a neutral rating. The game works as a soulslite, yes u can dodge, yes u can parry but no stamina. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Solid metroidvania, 8/10. Very nice to play next to the mechanically more demanding Silksong. + Dark and gloomy world building. + Great pacing of narrative, good writing. Story about sentience, in a way. + Gorgeous pixelart style. neutral · AI labelView post →Yeah. Good little metroidvania. Just REALLY annoying that you can't plat in 1 playthrough and the devs went above and beyond the stop save scumming. It kind of becomes just a chore really. Makes it look replayable on the numbers and increases the hours but thruth is - this is very non-replayable (nothing changes, so no point, unless you wanna do it again or plat) and short.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →this game is amazing, i think the art is some of the best ive seen done, and the gameplay feels really smooth along with how boss fights work.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Extremely short (6-8 hours), poor combat mechanics, where parrying some times works (some enemies show an indicator on each attack they do, some don't, and even if they do the timing if there is any just feels really bad. It feels like a really rushed game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game really tries to look like Blasphemous and to have the same level of gameplay. Yet it fails in interesting platforming; it introduces rogue-lite elements for no particular reasons as it doesn't provide any benefits and doesn't play much of a role in battles; the bleak color palette lacks contrast, and you will often stumble on traps and small enemies because they blend with backgrounds. Sadly wasted 6 hours waiting for the game to get better. Don't waste your time on it.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly a bit bland and not really a metroidvania, its a 2D sidescroller where you only 'need' to go forward. Gives me more of a "beat 'em up" vibe with some platforming, especially when they constantly block off exits for fights. Stopped trying to look around as I would only find either this games "souls" that you obtain considerably more by just leaving the "moon hunger" mechanic going or glowing orbs on the ground that give you a minimal permanent buff. Unfortunately the story never drew me…

neutral · AI labelView post →Moonscars is a great, challenging game if you're into dark, gritty action. The combat feels really tight and satisfying once you get the hang of it. You have to time your parries and dodges well. The art style is fantastic. It's got this creepy, painted look that makes the world really stand out. The story is interesting and full of mystery, pushing you to explore further. Definitely recommend it.

Pros: - Interesting boss fights - Great combat/movement system - lots of different systems (though they aren't delved that deep into) - exploration is fun Cons: - Characters kinda just appear and you don't really care for them - Confusing story as things just kinda happen and they don't explain why until later - Magic system is interesting, but some options are just far and…
