Many complain about aggressive monetization, including locked characters and paid DLC. [1][2][3] Some find the game a downgrade from previous entries in combat and customization. [4][5][6]

A miserable piece of code with paid fatalities, broken balance and a narrative with the dramatic depth of Baraka trying to eat soup with his arm blades. Why even bother keeping 150 GB on the hard drive if half of it is locked behind a paywall?

Who left the Instagram filter on? When I booted up MK1 for the first time, I had to rub my eyes a few times. Everything was undeniably pretty, but was that game still Mortal Kombat? I mean, it is, but it is so very busy pandering to the social-media generation: Everything is scrubbed clean of the grime and crusted blood that was kind of the quintessence of the franchise, every character looks like the beauty filter …

MK1 was a disaster on launch because of hair-brained WB and NRS executives trying to squeeze as much money out of loyal fans as possible. The second I saw that certain characters like Shang Tsung, a beloved icon of the series, be locked behind a pre-order, I knew this game was going to be incredibly expensive after the initial game purchase. Additional characters being $8 is one thing, but having kameos be $5 is …

Honestly, I don’t understand all the people saying MK1 “ruined the franchise” or that the game is completely boring. Yeah, MK1 has its problems. I’m not going to pretend it’s perfect. But the story is actually really good, the cinematics are amazing, the Kameo system is fun, and the overall combat feels fast, brutal and satisfying. At the end of the day, it’s a fighting game. Pick a character you like, learn the …

6/10 A Weak Mortal Kombat I'm going to be honest... I've played the original MK, plus 9, 10, and 11, and this one... This one left a lot to be desired. The story is ok, but not as good as the previous games, and gameplay-wise, I feel like it downgraded too. The roster is slightly smaller than in the last three games, and I'm only talking about the base game. A few of the designs feel uninspiring too. The Kameo …

Critics, per Wikipedia
Mortal Kombat 1 received "generally favorable reviews" from critics, according to review aggregator Metacritic. 87% of critics recommended the game on review aggregator OpenCritic. The Nintendo Switch version was critically panned upon release for its poor graphical quality, extensive load times, poor performance, and numerous bugs. Mitchell Saltzman of IGN, who had given the version on PlayStation 5 an 8 out of 10, gave the Switch port a 3, stating, "There's a hint of a great fighting game still peeking through the blurry backgrounds, but its horrendous load times, inconsistent framerate, muddy visuals, and plethora of bugs make the Switch version an altogether aggravating way to play what…

There's no option to download specific languages, like Witcher 3 did back in 2015, and since they're all bundled together you can't just go into the games files and delete the files for languages that you aren't using. Please explain to me how this game warrants an install size larger than titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Black Myth Wukong, Alan Wake 2, Doom The Dark Ages, Resident Evil 4…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Somehow 10x worse than MK11. And that's still probably and understatement. Maybe don't spend all your money on Megan Fox (Nitara sounds terrible in this "game") and all your time on poorly optimized graphics. Sometimes having a playable game within that is a good thing.

neutral · AI labelView post →I'll start by saying that I really wanted to like this game but just couldn't. MK1 has easily been the quickest to put down compared to MK11 and MKX. I was just not having fun anymore. I'll ignore the usual MK launch shenanigans which plagues all MK games. You can go read about them online, it was literally unplayable when released. Took ages to matchmake with someone, no crossplay, desyncing issues, audio desync, etc. Invasions sucks. Krypt should be a staple in all MK games. Kameo system is…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game's okay. The graphics are astounding I really liked cinematics in the campaign. But for me that's all I could enjoy since the servers in Russia are disabled and I can't join any online session so half of the main menu is blocked for me even though I paid for the game like everybody else. Don't know why almost any half assed company decided to play politics while themselves being soulless corporate money makers. It's sad to see regular folks suffering from it.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →gameplay felt mostly fine to me. not really a massive mortal kombat fan so i cant really compare this game to the others. wait for the definitive edition to go on sale if you really want the game. what i cant justify is the 150 gig storage size that ♥♥♥♥ is ludicrous man. this game does not have enough content for that to make sense; just completely lacking in any sort of file compression

neutral · AI labelView post →I'm an old-school MK fan, ever since Mk2 on Sega I've been playing every game in the series. With Mk1, looking at its release quality and the predatory monetization practices they implemented soon after, I decided to wait a while and only recently picked it up on sale. The game looks gorgeous, I kinda enjoyed the story mode (not the DLC part though, it's horrible beyond any words), I like the roster, I don't mind the grind and the customization system is fine by me. But no matter what I do I…

neutral · AI labelView post →A chance to reboot the franchise and fell flat. Not too fun compared to other fighting games, and the story felt uninspired. Great character designs and looks good. But horribly unoptimized. It's nearly 200gigs. Like wtf? Invasions mode an afterthought. Ultimately not it.

neutral · AI labelView post →most of the game is fine, better than 11, happy to see Khameleon back, though i wish i could play as her. its an instant no because the game BLATANTLY cheats, and its not subtle either, its stuff like giving an enemy 10k+ health and 99% damage reduction just randomly in any tower with no way of defeating them, just EXPLICITLY to force you to quit. oh, and as a nice turd in the punch bowl, if you choose any of the "easy" settings for story mode, they're actually scaled to hard mode. just as a…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I paid $20 for this game and all of the DLC, and it's worth it. Peacemaker is tight. Real talk though, the games controls feel super loose and flabby, so if I would have paid $70+ for this I would have refunded it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →worse than X or 11. Kameos were a terrible design decision. This game has quite possibly some of the worst single player content of any NRS game to date. You would think the customization would be improved from 11 but they made it much worse. If you want to play an MK game just buy 11. player base is about the same.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terrible pricing policy! During the 2025 December sale, the Elder God bundle (MK1 DE* + MK11 Ultimate + MK XL) appeared at a very low price. Later, it was claimed to be a pricing error and the price was increased. Currently, the price of this bundle in the sale is the same as the price that was claimed to be a pricing error. Regular Price: MK1: $49.99 MK1 DE: $69.99 MK1 EG: $79.78 Sale Price: MK1: $9.99 MK1 DE: $20.99 MK1 EG: $13.05
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →game combos don't sync correctly. Having to rely on kameos to continue combos strings is beyond dumb. MK11 Had more customization's and more variety and all the way around a better game overall. MKX had more fun gameplay elements that makes the game still memorable. Thank god i wasnt an unlucky soul who bought this middle child of a game at full price. Definitely not worth it if your looking for fun combos. Try MK X

But then I thought, maybe I'll give it another try on PC since its on sale and all the DLC is out. But nope, still terrible. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Well, for a Mortal Kombat fan, I have to say I am really disappointed: - No 2nd fatality - No Krypt - No memorable story line (the new story is awful) - Shaders and cache take so long - No interaction with the environment and the stages - No stage Fatality Honestly, past MK games such as Armageddon or Deception were full of new ideas and innovation but these recent games are only a downgrade!

And now here I am, about to refund it days after getting it. I could not for the life of me, successfully play the game. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The definition of insanity is repeating the same decision and expecting different results. That was my first thought after completing the base campaign. Even more so than its predecessor, this felt less like a complete story and more like setup for the “real” second half of the narrative with its expansion. While Mortal Kombat 11 also had this issue to an extent, it never felt quite as overt as it does here. That said, the final chapter is undeniably cinematic and delivers some genuinely…

Story writing so atrocious I had to re read tolkein literature, just to remind myself there's actually good, thoughtful fiction out there. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Actually a good game, but if you're an ancient device gamer like me, don't bother. You only have HDD? Too bad, you'll get f-ed on everything that needs a load time. You only have 16 gigs of RAM? Too bad. Somehow, Netherrealm Studios will summon the outworld armies to reduce your available RAM to 80mb. Now if you ask me, is it a fun game? Yes, do get it if you have a decent specs, but personally I'll pass this entry because my toaster cannot keep up with its dying time.

The story is good overall, but it starts to drag when you're constantly fighting duplicate characters from different timelines. It gets repetitive by the end. I got the Definitive Edition for ₹160 ($1.66) with MK bundle because i already owned Mk11 and MK10, and it’s worth it at that price. There are a lot of things wrong with this game. A fun PvP game that is supposed to always sit on your storage so that you can play it anytime with friends locally is freaking 140GB (200GB with 4K Pack) and always requires an internet connection. Graphics are the only improvement here…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game itself is okay but i think they hit peak with MK:X and never will reach that level of fun again character roster is alright and story mode was like a Armageddon 2.0 wish they waited to set up a better paced story.
