Players praise the unique blend of FPS and RTS gameplay. [1][2][3] Many note the game is dead or has a very small player base. [4][5][6] The community is widely described as toxic and unwelcoming to new players. [7][8][9]

game is super actully very dead(if its not prime hours u cant even find a server) and the people who remain are darn toxic. and the main server(BAD) has the most ego driven admins , they will ban and abuse people for no good reason just so they can appease & gatekeep those 10 active players. i've known alot of people who thier friends got banned and they left the game. this game actully got natural selected, it cant …

The best team-based shooter I have ever played. And, the worst. Incredible soaring highs and devastatingly brutal lows. A ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ toxic community that is NOT newbie friendly, and that's because a bad player can ruin a match. But because this dead game is dead, they will begrudgingly help you if you're earnest to learn; for the have no one else. Morale in this game is absolutely essential. I have seen defeat snatched …

Natural Selection 2 is the kind of game that makes you question why the industry keeps making the same shooter every year. One bloke plays Commander, desperately trying to hold the team together like an exhausted manager during a night shift, while everyone else either follows orders or wanders off to become alien food. It's StarCraft meets Counter-Strike, except everyone is stressed, resources are scarce and a …

The game is dead. When it was alive though, this game was a fantastic blend of FPS/RTS/Strategy. Every game was different. Every encounter mattered. Easily the best FPS/Strategy games to release - I'd go as far as to call it the only successful one.

If you like the Subnautica games and also like pvp games that mix FPS combat with some Top Down Commander Strategy, give this game a try. This game is what happens when the Kharaa from Subnautica gets out of control. No joke. This game is connected to Subnautica. Same universe.

60 of 191 · most liked firstThis game has no anti-cheat so the community just backdoors people's PCs using steam workshop mods that abuse LuaJIT FFI as a way to detect smurfs and cheaters. Game used to be great but has been overrun with lowly garbage people. They use the backdoor to livestream your desktop in some discord server so they can all watch you. If they find cheats or if they just don't like you they will dox you in their gay-ops discord and use your phone number to commit wire fraud and try to max out your…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Toxic game for beginners, see the comments for example. Had a hope for this game but i guess the playerbase talk for itself 40-50 per 24h peak and it's isn't at all near Tremulous gameplay. Playerbase is not beginners friendly at all, you can't even learn to play commander because you're instantly kicked out and if one side didn't had a good start, people instantly vote to restart the game, wtf is wrong with you guys ?

neutral · AI labelView post →This game has a tiny community, only a few active populated servers run by the same clan. when you join their server, you install workshop content. that workshop content is unverified by steam, only by the game devs, who couldn't give less of a care. the result? a certain group of toxic people who host servers on this game have backdoor access to anyone who connects, and most new players will when they find out they can't just steam-relay to host a game with their buddies. Game also has 0…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bought a 4 pack for me and my friends to queue a private lobby. Apparently we have to create a dedicated server which we couldn't be bothered doing. (Should be an in-game hosting feature). We joined a server stated new players only and had 2 toxic idiots joining and harassing us. Well done, you've got 10 less people joining you're toxic community now as we have refunded all of our games! :) Keep gate keeping your 100 player game xD
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Don't bother with this game. The people who play it are god awful. Look for the review by Opti from December 2025-ish. It's full of sick weirdo scumbags (and scammers) and is just not a good one to pick up. If you asked me 10 years ago, I'd still think this game is the ish. But now it's a waste of energy.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dead game, maybe the same 40 people over and over, "noob friendly" community servers dont let you play alien, the admins force you to play marine over and over until they let you join their discord, no wonder they abandoned this game, it had a lot of potential too sadly. Someone needs to make the next Alien Vs Predator, but this is not it, skip this game. Edit, I've disabled comments someone in the community did the "um ackuallly" fat guy meme tried to convince me i was playing the game…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has been slowly losing players over the years and it's because the players are extremely toxic. The super serious ranking system should be removed and so should conceding a game. I have seen time after time where this community pushes out new players with just straight slurs, they judge every little decision you make, they belittle anyone who doesn't do exactly what is being told, it is horrible. I am really surprised the devs didn't remove voice chat and probably text chat and…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →an amazing game that is plagued by people that refuse to teach other, its all a ego poop throwing event now
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was, in short, absolutely amazing. The elements of Commanders assisting and guiding their seperate teams in amazingly designed maps was just awesome. I was a fan of the original, which was little more than a Half-Life mod years and years ago. But now? Skip it. The playerbase is only big enough to support like 5 servers. And they are the most sweaty, insular, and toxic individuals ive ever encountered. You will get immediately flamed for poor performance. I lament that any who come across…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Been playing the game for a long time over the years. It was a fun game for a time, but that time has passed. I wouldn't recommend purchasing it now, it's pretty much dead. Wish Unknown Worlds would just make it free to play since they abandoned the franchise. Wish I could give it a neutral review since back then it was great. But from the perspective of a new buyer AVOID.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →got called by an admin from <BAD> servers a smurf and got perma banned. what a weird community and very dumb admins towards new players . no wonder this game is dead
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Dead game with ♥♥♥♥ community servers filled with man children that complain that new players join. save your money and keep this ♥♥♥♥ out of our library

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game. Just wish the player base was higher still. They should make a Natural Selection 3.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game started as a mod for half life 1 as Natural Selection 1, and grew into this very robust standalone that can be quite the engaging fusion of RTS and FPS in a very team oriented experience with a lot of diverse strategies and unique ways to play between the marines and the aliens. Despite the glowing endorsement however, I must also say that this game is an artifact now, not an active experience. If you ever want to actually play it as intended, you need to find a community…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Toxic community ruins the game. <BAD> servers are ran by a fascist man-baby whose name rhymes with Laithe. The entire community knows this, but the game is too dead to play on any other servers. Enjoy!
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →game is fun for $4.30 but the community is not very welcoming to new players . definitely a classic old-school asymmetrical pvp game with an RTS layer from two commanders but again, community is not welcoming and the meta is extremely old and stale if you care about that sorta thing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game concept is incredible and its a damn shame it didnt pick up when the devs still supported it. Writeing this as of 24.10.2025 i have to say that theres like 2 community servers left that still actively play populated by the most dedicated fans of the game imagineable. Unfortunately that means that 1. if youre trying to learn either playing or commanding youll face league of legends levels of abuse and 2. youll get crushed in game by people who have thousands of hours more experiance…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The player base are not friendly to new players. Nobody lets me play in their lobbies and when I join the few servers that say "Noob Friendly". I'm called a Smurf Account or they blast me in chat and coms for not knowing how to play the game. I JUST downloaded the game. If you're new to the game and think you have a chance, good luck, but for me, I'm OUT.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The concept of RTS games has always intrigued me — having to strategically make your moves and progress by building your army and settlements. But I’ve never liked the slow gameplay where you have to wait for your buildings to upgrade, and in the meantime juggle other tasks to compensate for the waiting. I wanted to give Natural Selection 2 a try since it’s an FPS game, and I love FPS games. Combine that with RTS elements and you get an interesting genre. But the game is a high-skill,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's been well over a decade since I last played this, so going into it I didn't remember anything about this game. I was surprised to see multiple servers with full capacity. Ended up joining a random lobby and played for the marines. For the other team (Aliens) they had this one guy bhopping around the map and killing everyone on my team. It was funny to watch and honestly I enjoyed this game. If you can get a group of friends together, This would be solid fun.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →most goated game of all time. but yea every game from this era has an insane asylum of gamers who never stopped playing the whole time and their lives got worse, and worse, and they haunt the servers like a spectre. what stops me from casually playing is the premium queue system where you have to manually refresh til that empties then you can join normal queue
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Simply cause of the fact every lobby is full of people with thousands of hours makes it unplayable for new players. And the tutorial is absolutely useless, doesn't teach you anything at all. Awesome concept but got abandoned and therefore fell off completely sadly.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →kicked for being afk for 10 seconds
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was great. But my experience with the player base was mostly toxic. At this point in time I'd probably not recommend it just because of that.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Really great game, I wish I played more when it was still active. There is bots so you can still get a taste of what it was like. Most the fun was had when your team was throwing though. Add me if you wanna play sometime.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a masterpiece. Mechanically it is almost perfect. But the 40 remaining players who stayed with this game all these years are the most socially inept bunch of tylenol babies on Earth. "Why would I care about not being a petty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in a dead game?" - ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ I don't know ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, but maybe if you weren't trying to drive every new player away from this game it could have been the big Esport the devs were hoping it be. You'd have more than the 10 players and bots you have left.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The limited players remaining in this game all have thousands of hours. It is unplayable for new players. Even the "noob friendly" servers are full of people bhopping like it's a CS surf lobby. Even ran into someone with an aimbot within 3 games.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The <BAD> (only alive servers without elo req) server mods will insta ban any new player who is not 40 year old, talentless, handless, garbage, alcoholic, brain numb dog). even if you have a liquipedia or similar profile. lmaoo

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved playing Natural Selection 2 for the longest time and occasionally played it as a decent RTS FPS I would have left a positive review for the game for years, but as of July 2025 I cannot support this game. As of July 2025 KRAFTON CAN GO SUCK A ♥♥♥♥. DO NOT SUPPORT THE PUBLISHER! Still listed as April 2026 still listed with KRAFTON do not buy this game.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was a great game, but the devs have officially announced that they would completely stop development on the game, and that they are abandoning it. Do not buy unless it becomes free-to-play.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Was good when it wasn't dead. Very fun gameplay loop and interesting mechanics but unfortunately barely anyone plays anymore and those who do are strict about using their servers.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Meh, it would be okay of there was a player base for it. But the only ones left are the whiny man manchildren that play the game a SPECIFIC way and constantly complain about when something isn't done exactly to their specifications. No room to grow and learn the PVP aspects. And these people know it too, first game I loaded up in, they were talking about the reviews and what people say. There's maybe two 20-people servers that are full at a time, and the subreddit is essentially just one dude…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Truly one of the best games I've ever played, ten years ago. There just isn't enough people playing these days to recommend.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a good game, assuming you can find a lobby with a decent amount of real people that don't treat this game like an actual war with military strategy. Wish I had played this during it's prime when more than 12 people played at a time.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →8/10 with 5 being passing its very fun im praying for ns3 since subnautica namedropped the kharaa. while some players are toxic, theyre mostly drunken idiots who are trying to relive the glorydays of this old game so they cant really ragebait me. most players are happy for the resurgence from subnautica 2. my only issue is that getting into the servers is a pain. theres only two types of servers, those that are completely empty and those that are full. theres only ~80 players left and theyre…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Now I get to tell the people clamoring for more violence in #Subnautica2 that there's already a game for them, Natural Selection 2, as niche a PvP game you can get with both FPS and RTS mixed together where you can play a space marines that fight Kharaa too. Also from Unknown Worlds.
