Players praise the chaotic co-op fun, especially with friendly fire. [1][2][3] Some find the game repetitive and linear, with limited replay value. [4][5][6] Many recommend it as a great couch co-op game, especially on sale. [7][8][9]

Enjoyable enough if you like Magicka & want a knock off. However seems to be yet another victim of FrozenByte's 'don't give a sheet' attitude that's made them a poor developer in recent years. Levels are completely linear, if pretty, there's no replay level ability even if you miss something; you have to start a new game. Connection to the trine universe is tenuous at best with only a couple of nods making it …

Nine Parchments is a co-op action RPG where you and up to three friends play as wizard students chasing runaway spells. The magic system are fun, especially in multiplayer, where chaotic spell combos (and friendly fire!) add to the hilarity. However, the game feels too linear and quickly becomes repetitive especially after boss fights, which tend to follow a predictable pattern. While the visuals are charming and …

You can kill your friends and heal your enemies. Not that anyone would do that on purpose.... 10/10.

There's something thrilling about the idea that a half-forgotten cartoon or bootleg VHS might still be out there, waiting to be found. The internet eats that stuff up—forum deep dives, YouTube essays, decades-long hunts for proof. But here’s what gets me: the flip side. The stuff that was everywhere. Huge hits. Critically adored. Easy to find. And yet... somehow, no one remembers. Not lost media. Lost…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I can't recommend this game. It isn't really fun, even with friends as it just drags on. Fighting the same enemies over and over again, and if you don't fight them, you will be fighting the camera. Runs take 4-5 hours + the rougelight element can make it feel like a slog. If you only get bad spells to pick, you are stuck with them for hours. This means that if you play with friends, they might have fun while you just tread along. Which would be fine if the runs were not so long. The three…

neutral · AI labelView post →I'm a writer for hire in games! I'm in Finland. Here are some player observations about our work for Nine Parchments in the writing team, which I was big kahuna, boss of. These comments are from 2025, while the game was released in 2017. One of the particular things I did for Nine Parchments was to try and not make our characters cookie-cutter, because I thought it would make the game a rather lackluster experience. The core of critique during and after development for the characters was the…
neutral · AI labelView post →I mostly play co-op games and I am tired of the "everything is dark, ugly, and evil, and chaos is rampant" with a souls-copy aesthetic. I crave colorful games and fun co-op mechanics. Nine Parchments is casual, fun, and beautiful. The point IS that there is friendly fire because the challenge is to get the enemies without getting your friends. Played also by up to 4 people on a single screen. Coridden is very home-made but has cool mechanics of turning into beasts or riding your friends when…
positive · AI labelView post →I have MANY hours played on this game for Nintendo Switch. This game deserves a spot in everyone's library. It is the perfect couch co-op and party game. It is super fast to drop in and drop out of a game in progress and you're literally playing a bad wizard so the fact that there's friendly fire shenanigans is appropriate. BY THE WAY you CAN turn off friendly fire if you want. You can also switch to reverse friendly fire, where if you hit a teammate you take the damage instead. The art…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is truly fun to suffer through. I’ve owned this piece since 2019 and I’m currently still playing it online with friends, so I keep seeing all these negative issues people bring up in reviews. Personally, I’ve never experienced any save-related issues, and my Steam Cloud is still storing saves from over 6 years ago. I’ve played this game solo and with multiple people. There’s literally an option for hosting a private friends-only game — you just have to read the settings. You can also…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of my favorite games, with 2000+ hours on Switch and however many I have here. Does a great job of having dual-stick run and gun gameplay, while having a wide range of enemies, attacks, and elemental weaknesses and resistances that are challenging but approachable for a new player while rewarding a lot of practice. By far, it's the best as a co-op game. Unfortunately, there is no cross-play between systems. Currently (2025), PC has the most active players, followed by Switch.…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game but the arenas are too small and it's hard in co-op not to kill each other or yourself, it gets boring too quickly and I still haven't managed to collect all nine parchments.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a really fun, approachable couch co-op twin-stick shooter. It has a fun theme and lots of collectable items, upgradable skills, and unlockable characters, that encourages replaying earlier levels. It has rock-paper-scissor game mechanics that encourages the team to work together when fighting monsters, and it is fairly forgiving when players screw up. We have had a lot of laughs with this one, and it feels like we accomplished something, even when we only managed to unlock a hat of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game starts off good. But the maps ends up making you feel like you are missing something and there is nothing hiding in those random caves. And then they eventually put something in those random caves that you miss and can't use to unlock another area. Makes me feel like the map makers didn't work too well with the combat makers. Also this game is terrible about friendly fire. Played with two other people and eventually turned off friendly fire only for us to have that damage…

With spells that heal, stun, freeze, and explode—enhanced even further through coordination—you’ve got an exciting set of abilities that would make any RPG fan happy. Friendly fire is enabled, which means you can choose to PvP if you’d like, but it can also backfire if you’re grouped up or carelessly throwing out AoE spells. For under £4 at the time of…

neutral · AI labelView post →Well, glad to know that Trine's universe is expanding but Nine Parchments simply underdeliver completely. It plays somewhat same as Magicka or any other similar kind of game. The problem is not even balancing - game is just flat and repetitive: you start level, you kill same enemies without much variety. The end. Next level will be same. But yes, levels look nice just like Trine.

The way life sometimes hands you these perfectly flawed gems that you can't help but love, like that weird uncle who tells inappropriate jokes at Christmas but makes the best pudding you've ever tasted. That's Nine Parchments for you. Let me tell you a story. Last week, I'm sitting there with my kid, right, playing this gorgeously crafted magical romp that looks like Disney had a baby with a fireworks factory. neutral · AI labelView post →Nine Parchments is an amazing game and very fun to play co-op with friends. There are plenty characters and spells and combos to try out, which reminds a lot Magicka but in Trine universe. If any of these games brings you some joy, you should definetly give it a try.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a fun game, but it gets repetitive as you progress through the levels.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The worst part about this game is the friendly fire. Should be an option to turn it off. Overall fun game to play with family.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For some reason you have to host public and can't set a password either and this has been like this for quite some time and they didn't do anything about it. So either buy for single or don't because playing game with random people not exactly as you imagine. Since game relies on the more you play the more powerful your character becomes so while you're sitting at level 1 skills for example, others might even have death star in their hand. Gameplay is too similar to their other games and the…

The replay value is a bit mixed, but having run though the complete campaign a few times here and on the Switch, it is still one of my go to games. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →From the makers of the Trine Universe - Comes Nine Parchments! Sadly, other than music, the lore, graphics, and narration (all fantastic by the way) - what falls flat is the game play. Control is good that's also well done. This game encourages you to replay this game several times including unlocking characters (you only start with two). The a lot of the unlockable characters are just skins. The story for Trine Universe game is pretty weak as well vs the actual Trine games. When you get…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent Multiplayer Game, finished Story once. You can tell the Devs were going for a rougelike experience, then added levels and skills for depth, this feels odd; newly unlocked characters start at lvl 0, others keep their levels even though campaign is fresh start, so there are scenarios in multiplayer where some are leveling, others are "full" lvl, because there will be a point your character will be max lvl and the only way to continue leveling will be higher difficulty with instant game…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Will clutter up your steam inventory with pages and pages of worthless hats. Can't sell them (noone wants them), can't Gem them. Can't delete them. Other than that, its a pretty average action RPG that really wishes there was still a player population to coop/multiplayer with.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It pains me to see how underrated this coop gem is! It feels great how the players interact with each other and the elements are implemented.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is just 10x inferior Magicka. There is 0 story. The gameplay is okey, but compared to Magicka2 (Which itself is considered weaker than Magicka) its meh. The leveldesign is dreadfully boring - there are so many nooks and cranies and there is nothing in them. There are like 6 types of enemies that are just colored differently. It might be okay to just chill with your friends, but playing this after Magicka makes me want to play Magicka instead.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A spin-off of the Trine universe (and every bit as beautiful and engrossing), this is a co-op "dungeon" crawler for up to four people. Each "run" of the game comprises about 32 maps total, and I really don't recommend barreling them all in a single session, because - like Magicka before it - friendly fire is ON. And before you rush to find a mod that turns it off, I do kind of recommend leaving it turned on, because it's more or less baked into the experience, and finding ways to communicate…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →On it's own, it's a decent game. But if you are playing this as a Trine fan, you may not enjoy it. It's closer to a rogue-lite than a sidescroller like Trine. I had fun with it. Levels are well designed, artstyle and atmosphere follow the trine formula. Enemy variety as well as power variety is great and lets you follow different approaches. The major thing I didn't like was that there was no level select which forces you to start all over if you want to play a specific mission or…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →My brothers and I were having fun for the few hours that we played it until our private game suddenly turned public randomly. All of a sudden we had randos joining our game with no idea why it was happening. Some quick Google-fu revealed that this is indeed a known issue that the developers have no intention of fixing while also being pretty dismissive about it in various responses. Save your money.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is an absolutely garbage, waste of time game. If you want a good local co-op rogue like, get EMBER KNIGHTS instead. There is absolutely NO variety to the gameplay loop. It's just an endless array of going into a stage, fight a bunch of monsters with various elements in a locked area, repeat. It's boring as hell, and it gets absolutely asinine when you get to hardcore difficulty, which the game DOES not tell you is impossible to beat without being level 35 or so at the earliest. You'll…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I love this game. Masking friendly fire as magic spells you have no control over and broom fights is a lot of fun.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game needs to be marked more clearly that it is an controller game. It is so frustrating without, makes it really difficult to enjoy. Tutorial level doesn't have the clearest of directions, Once you get the hang of it, it does seem to be quite repetitive but that makes it difficult for new players to pick it up. Not for single-players. I was drawn in by the art style and marketing, and find myself a little disappointed.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Played this years ago on the switch but now that I'm playing on PC, I'm seeing for the first time how beautiful the world of Nine Parchments can be. Gameplay is really solid too - you can go spells blazing or be patient and blast enemies from afar.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After my first hour of playing this game it was extremely frusturating to deal with how easily it was to fall off the edge accidentaily and how poorly the automatic targeting was. I don't even know why lobbing some of my magic skills wouldn't auto target. I felt discouraged in the first hour of this game that I've contemplated just deleting it. Whoever put friendly fire on by default needs to get their brain scanned. 10/10 saved my marriage and tought me communication without anger and prepared me for fatherhood. Taught my wife to not ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ move on the tiles in that dragon boss with the disappearing platforms. I still have nightmares of her making us fall in the holes with boss at 1hp.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Steamdeck review: PASS. The game is clearly built for mouse and keyboard and its basically impossible to hit anything except your teammate when playing on controller. Otherwise, there are many design issues that ruin what seems to be an otherwise charming magic game. I paid 1.25$. It was still too much because the game is too frustrating and I will not play it again.
