I want to really like this game, but the user interface is just to clunky, making it frustrating to use, harder than it need be to learn, and difficult to understand the consequences of what you are doing as you play. https://youtu.be/cvzRX3-DoEE

Promising digital adaptation of the fantastic board wargame of the same name from 2011. - No Retreat! The Russian Front is a superb board game, and this digital version looks to take that gameplay experience and wrap it with all the benefits of streamlining that a PC adaptation can add. There are many functions here that handles the tedious parts of a board game experience (like calculating supply, combat odds, and …

Greetings! At the beginning, I want to point out that this review was written just a few days after the early access release, so that in the future, when reading it, there is no misunderstanding. If I don’t forget and it makes sense, I will update it later. The very fact that someone took on the task of bringing this excellent tabletop wargame into a digital format deserves respect and gratitude. However, yes — this …

I love seeing tabletop games brought to digital form with solid bot opponents so I can play anytime. Even better when they stay true to the original instead of piling on unnecessary 3D effects. This is a pure, faithful digital version of a classic—and that’s exactly what I wanted. I never had the chance to play the physical game, and this finally made it possible. Absolutely thrilled. Thank you!

Extremely faithful reproduction of the board game. Very, very good introductory wargame for someone teaching someone else how to play. This is THE Eastern Front gateway drug, LOL! I own the board game. Love it, and this makes it easy to play in one sit down.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →As much as I'd like to, I cannot recommend this game at present. While it's based on a classic boardgame with some innovative features, the PC version is simply unfinished. The developers continue to play whack-a-mole with what are often fatal bugs, meaning every time I open this game it's like Russian roulette as to whether the game shoots itself and falls over.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game IS in early access and has some bugs to be worked out. However I believe Cyril Jarnot is just the designer to accomplish this task. I am beyond delighted to see a GMT boardgame, translated to a PC version!!! I had so much fun playing GMT games and own about 40 that sit on a shelf. PC versions of these games with A.I. bring new hope to play these classics again! So if you by this early access. Bee sure to report bugs by hitting F10 and Cyril will fix it!

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Having no familiarity with GMT 'No Retreat' wargames, because my background, when it comes to wargame board gaming has been exclusively with Avalon Hill board games (yes I am that old...😜), I was intrigued to try it when I first saw it. Being a tremendous fan of CB4G also led me to wanting to try the game, so I gladly volunteered to be a Beta tester. I can honestly say that this is quite a gem of a game. For a high level strategy game based on the historical invasion of Russia by Germany in…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Still some tweaking needed but huge potential for grand strategy games. Hopefully North Africa is in future plans, If you like board wargames of the Russian Front, this is it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Ok my fellow wargamers, show me one of your go to games. I’ll start; “No Retreat, The Russian Front”
positive · AI labelView post →I played a fair amount of this game using the GMT title (and the one before GMT made it pretty) My son and I have had some memorable games when he was still a kid. (He 23 now) This seems to work quite well. A few things with the interface I needed to figure out, and I missed the turn record chart and some of the other odds and ends that appear on the game board of the paper copy. All that said, the game plays well and I found no glitches. I beat the AI on turn 9, but did not handicap it so I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Too little of value in the game right now (6.2025) to recommend. The AI can't succeed in single-player mode, and the multi-player mode doesn't make any sense and matchmaking seems impossible (or perhaps pointless). Wait till it's on deep discount or has many years and many more happy reviews. The game right now is lame-oh
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good fun game, played the board version and the Steam version is good.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The tabletop version of this game has been around for a few years and it is universally acclaimed for its elegant simplicity which nevertheless gives the players plenty of historical accuracy and, most importantly, it's fun! This digital version plays well and takes care of the not-so-enjoyable bookkeeping. It's clearly an early access game in that it's a bit rough in places (please proofread the rule book!) and the UI could use some polish. Be that as it may, I'm loving the game!

neutral · AI labelView post →Very good wargame about the Russian Front. The game seems simple with a low number of armies and the lightweight map. However, the rules are not that simple. I wisely started by going through tutorials before starting a serious game. AI is perfect to learn. I hope to become strong enough to challenge other players online.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →If all problems are ironed out, this is an amazing achievement. I wish they could do a similar game for the awesome a world at war by GMT.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A good user interface (UI) should be intuitive in the sense that ideally one can start playing without any special instruction. The interface itself will lead you to the next decision point, so that game play just flows along. Yeah ... that ain't this game. You'll hit your first combat phase and be clueless what to do next, And good luck finding out what to do next. Even when you think you have it figured out, the game just undermines that and leaves you clueless again. The whole UI…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The developers need to be commended for bringing this great boardgame to the PC and making it available for early release. You should anticipate bugs in an early release (and there are) but it is through the feedback process that the game can improve. Overall, as it stands now, while not perfect, it is an excellent beginning and shows much promise for when the final release comes out. Anyone interested in the old boardgame should give it a chance and help to make the final product that much…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good game and the closest to my favorite board game "Rise and Decline of the Third Reich" so far. Until someone makes a PC version of the "Rise and Decline of the Third Reich" game, I recommend playing this one.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The gameplay is basically good. A bit regimented in the game turn process with limited variability. Several glitches noted, mostly in the tutorials. I think this style play may work a little better at a lower operational level and not so much the strategic level, which it does do a good job of anyways. All in all once you get the mechanics, a fun game. Not sure of the the long term replay-ability - to be seen.

Well done Cyril (I own Carrier Battles and Napoleon's Eagles, both also excellent adaptations) Thanks to continue providing us with those great games.

positive · AI labelView post →No Retreat the Russian Front is very good, and the rest of the series. GMT Games covers the C&C series for Ancients, Napoleonics, Medieval and Samurai. positive · AI labelView post →Old Man attempts what should be a simple game. No. Actually used a deck of cards here so they did not have to do the appropriate programming. Card decks went out in the 50s. Disgusting. Instructions inadequate-you just do not know which buttons to push when. Detailed instructions to get through 2 turns would help greatly. Game not ready, and after watching a online video I'm still in the dark. I will wait to try this one again when they have come into the 2020s. BTW, to make the game more…

neutral · AI labelView post →A breath of fresh air. Nothing else like it in PC wargaming. This is a game dedicated to the entire War in the East that is easily accessible, playable, and fun.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent boardgame conversion as always by Cyril. It's still early access, so the game has a few bugs (can't say "No" when asked about advancing after combat for instance), but they are minor things that he has always worked out in the past. This game fills a huge void in modern computer wargaming: An easily playable and yet accurate strategic-level Eastern Front wargame that doesn't require days to complete a single scenario ( I love WITE and WITE2, but it's a HUGE time commitment). I look…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is already one of the best computer wargames of eastern front strategy out there, giving a great sense of the strategic problems posed by geography, weather, and supply. This is due to the excellent design of the original board game, with units representing armies and fronts to avoid micromanagement (following the 'two levels down' principle), and cards to add historical flavour. The game is deceptively complex despite the low unit count. It rewards careful planning, strategic thinking…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →interesting game, still in beta, careful with click/move don't be casual.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is not the type of games that I usually play, but I must say I was pleasantly surprised and I'm hooked! Really engaging & fun gameplay loop. I've played a few hours and I can't wait to play more.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This great WWII strategy boardgame has been brillantly ported to computer by Cyril Jarnot. You could feel the thrill of the dark times of Barbarossa operation back to the Red Army rolling back to Berlin. The mechanics of the game are simple but true to the spirit of the original game and thus efficient for players. It seems easy to complete but it requires lots of strategy and ahead thinking if you want to prevail. That's exactly what we expect, isn't it ?
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am not familiar with the board game and haven't played physical card and hex wargames for a good number of years. My initial impression was the that the map was quite small, but the game plays very well, with encirclaments possible and woe betide you, if you overstretch your supply lines. The AI is more than capable of taking advantage of this and cutting you off. I would say that the earlier negative criticisms about the UI being a mess were justified. However, in my opinion this has…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent hex and counter Eastern front strategic level game.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Needs more refinement
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Exactly the kind of game that's fun to play against AI. Needs more time to cook, but that's why it's early access.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Game is great not as big or bold as Russian Front from Avalon Hill. But can see what is trying to be done!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A very enjoyable game of grand strategy on the WW2 Eastern front faithfully recreated from a boardgame of the same name with some changes here and there. Plenty for both sides to do as the battles can flow and ebb. Short scenarios and sudden death (optional) rules make for quick and exciting games. I learnt the game in two parts.. 1/ The rules 2/ UI and how the game inplements those rules and lets you play. The biggest challenge is the second part. Once you understand the games little quirks…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The rules are not clear & the AI is very in favor of Russia.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Can feel janky at times but is really fun
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am enjoying this game much more than expected. It has just enough wargame crunchiness to make you think but not so much that it costs you hours of time to do a turn. PBEM is smoothly implemented.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The interface is a bit wonky, but basically fine once you figure it out. The game itself is amazing.
