What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 59 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mixed (67 of 99 positive).
Many find the turn-based combat tedious and slow, especially in later battles. [1][2][3] Some reviewers note the romance feels forced and lacks player agency. [4][5][6]

I feel harsh putting a thumbs down since it's really not the worst game I've ever played, but my disappointment in Nova Hearts is so immeasurable that I can’t help but not recommend it. For some positives, the art and character designs are great! The cast feels diverse and silly, I liked most of them on a surface level. The music, backgrounds, and combat animations are very stylized and fun. This game is nice to …

I really wanted to like this game. It's cute and it offers a bunch of cute romance options (Hello Basile, Donald, and May) but they are dead set and determined to make you be polyamorous. It's simply impossible to have a normal conversation with your friends Will and CJ without feeling cornered into romantic conversation. It gives you the option to turn them down but they keep asking and also there is no shift to …

I'll be real. This game isn't top tier. But you know what? It's cute. I like the art style, I like being able to flirt with everyone and date most people, it's fluffy queer trash, dyed hair and pronouns and all. And honestly, I like that. If you might like that too, and aren't too fussed about whether the game is technically proficient, give it a try! If not, give it a miss.

Exceptionally strong writing and characters. The romance is very hit or miss, but diverse enough that there's someone for everyone. Personally I like Julietta and May the most, unless Irene ends up being an option in Chapter 5 in which case that's where I'll be pivoting because her design is gorgeous. I enjoyed the presentation of the game, very stylish, and I enjoyed both the text conversations and the more classic …

Have just finished a 6 hours long first run. I would say that I mostly enjoyed the game but their were some very great moments and some pretty annoying, which make the whole experience kinda "meh". The Pros : - Great LBGTQIA+ representation (trans, gays, polyamourous, ace...) - The dating sim part was globally quite pleasant - The art is amazing. Being a magical girl myself, I can testimony of its girliness (does …

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like the story and the general vibe of this game. Big fan of dating sims and I also really like RPGs and turn-based combat so I thought this would be a slam dunk but oh my god I just found the combat so dang tedious. Every encounter took so long I felt sick of the combat system by the first boss. Too many animations, too much waiting, and I feel like you hit like a wet noodle while a shocking number of enemies get to 1-2 shot you. There are heals and taunts and interrupts but the way combat…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I have a lot I was going to say about what I liked and didn't like about this game, but honestly, forget it. The final battle of this game is so utterly, absolutely, gobsmackingly obnoxious, in a way that is just completely stupid and mean spirited, that I can't be bothered to care about the rest of the game. Avoid at all costs. Nothing in this game redeems the absolute teeth kicking crap they pull at the end. You know what? I'm gonna just tell you. To hell with spoilers, you deserve to…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Recommended with several caveats Story, Setting, and Characters If you like quirky visual novels, you'll enjoy this. Fun characters with good art, somewhat unique setting, with a pretty run-of-the-mill story told at a rapid pace. The cast is very diverse, which is nice, but three or four get the vast majority of screen time and I found myself wishing (ha) that I could spend time with others who I'd barely seen. Additionally, it'll make most of who I'm assuming the game's intended…

It's simply impossible to have a normal conversation with your friends Will and CJ without feeling cornered into romantic conversation. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →SPOILER REVIEW . . I’m so mixed about this game, I loved the concept and the art is so good. But the romance system and gameplay is so frustrating to play, I just can’t recommend it.. Player agency is like non existing, you think you can choose who to romance and the things you say have any weight or meaning to it? Apparently not?? Even if you go out of your way to not flirt with certain characters, the game don’t care and you still keep flirting with characters despite never shown any interest…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Review in short: "A game which although it has its moments, it has severe flaws in all its core components. The combat is tedious and repetitive, there are issues with both the narrative pacing and the dialogue choices, and the dating sim component is a bit shallow and quite forced on the player." Info on how I played: * Played on PC * Played with Controller Pro: + Good and intuitive feedback on whether a character approves or not your choice + Good combat mechanics + Good background arts +…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Quite boring. I did not care to finish as felt like a loss of time. I also feel like Will is supposed to be the main character (or did the dev selfisert?). She is EVERYWHERE. She dated EVERYBODY. She is constantly on your screen. The MC is just kinda in the background. Also, I find it a bit of a turn off that she constantly reminds the MC that she dated (or currently dates) people that MC might be interested in - CJ, the cool guy? Will is dating him. Sacha, the curt high school sweetheart who…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Recommended... but this game has some issues to be aware of. I really love this game. The diverse characters and magical girl concept stole my heart. The cut scenes are gorgeous! The turn-based combat was such a fun spin on the visual novel dating sim concept. As a lover of both turn-based/action RPGs, visual novels, and dating sims I found the combo unique and enjoyable. I loved the mystery of Luce's secret friend and the story as a whole, I loved the interactions between all the characters…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →So I hate this in Nova Hearts, I basically rejected this guy at every turn and then the game has my character say he is cute. It feels like this is some kind of "canon" ship the game wants me to follow cuz it has not done this with the other characters, she's not talked about how hot her friends are

You and your friends take on the task of kicking some alien butt when you're not partying or stirring up some romance. The Story & Gameplay At a party, hooking up with old friends in your hometown, you and your two besties are hit with a mysterious force that transforms you all into heroes that have to take on the evil but cute baddies invading your town from another dimension. And when you're not fighting your…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I got this game in a bundle with Boyfriend Dungeon, which i am a HUGE fan of. And the premise seemed very similar, and in a lot of ways, it is! I think the art is really pretty, though sometimes looks a bit AI generated but i'm probably wrong. The writing is fun and the characters feel interesting. But the combat is a SLOG. The combo attacks are fun but otherwise it just tales too long and isn't dynamic enough for me. I also wish you had a bit more control over where and what you do. I know it…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really love the vibe so far but I hate that you have to close the entire game just to load a save, unless there is a mechanic or button I'm not seeing it is the only viable way to load a save as I have tried pressing load while in the file options. It also doesn't save button changes after refreshing to load a save file making it an even longer task of redoing. A lot of minor things that dampen the overall experience. Also to be aware that if you are in the mindset to have specific exclusive…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Genuinely one of the worst dating games i've ever played. The game advertises itself as some kind of "you choose your romance!!" but in the end it doesn't even matter. All inclusivity aside, some of the people don't like sleeping around and romancing every single chara as if your life depends on it. I have nothing against polyamory but i'm not poly myself and this game literally forces it on you. Oh you picked a chara to romance? Jokes on you all this time it didn't even matter because the…

neutral · AI labelView post →The game is only good if you want to follow the non-committal relationship with Will route. Which is like fine but for a game that seems to base itself around being in a relationship that suits you it clearly feels like they didn't want you to do anything else. I entered a an exclusive relationship with May only for the final cutscene of the game to have Luce kissing will and then the game doesn't even give you a choice to follow through with the job offer that May gives you. Genuinely just…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Hmmmm this was quite a game to go through. Granted I only did one playthrough but think that's enough for me. Short answer the game had its quality but failed in 2 very big aspects. Blend of combat, visual novel which is the whole crux of this game. Rushed, no polish, meh. Short answer not really recommend but was still interesting to play. Long answer Combat It was a slog to get through. At first I was interested but over time the combat speed was the same, turns took too long, the combo…

Shame because I loved othercide and bought this to support the studio. My very first thumbs down on steam and a solid 2/5
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →First stream of the week, and it's Indie Games Day!!✨✨ I've been having such a blast with Nova Hearts (a super queer dating sim/turn based battler), so we're hopping back into that today. Stream's up at two(et)! Pewpew! #vtuber #playindie #novahearts
positive · AI labelView post →The diversity and representation is great, and the story is alright, but the combat is so luck based and slow that i couldn't get myself to finish the story.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Pretty girls!! I love them!! :D I can't wait to date all of them!! (and the NB <33333) This is a fun dating sim-visual novel-Persona like game with super powers? Hell yea lets go!! With LBGT+ repp too!!!! I would recc playing with controller instead of keyboard tho. Why must I mouse over and press Space instead of LMB LOL I'm sure that'll be fixed soon tho :)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a mixed experience. The story was engaging most of the time and I enjoyed the animations and art styles. The turn based combat was a huge detractor for me. It felt slow, upgrades were far too infrequent and expensive to get, and making sense of all the combos was confusing. You don't upgrade your stats at any point in the game so you stay with the same hp from start to end. Many enemies feel like sponges. You typically have 3-4 fights per chapter which grant you 250 xp a piece.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Honestly, almost 8 hours into this game an I am addicted. I love the characters, I love the play style, an I soooooooooooo love the dating mechanics. I love the trio an their dynamic. The list can go on
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wouldn't recommend this, but also - its really not THAT bad. If there was a sale and someone wanted to try it out for themselves, I think it'd be at least worth trying. However, I had too many issues with the game to recommend it fully. For positives, I'll say the art is FANTASTIC. I'm not a huge fan of the 3D models, but the transformation scenes are INCREDIBLE. The art is certainly the best part of the game. Using the cosmos/signs-look on the "app" on your phone to show the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Omg this is actually one of the best games I've played it a while. It's not for everyone, but I've been adoring it. SUPER queer and sex positive, visual novel style strategy game that I'm absolutely in love with! I'm obsessed and currently stuck on the 5th or 6th boss LMFAO #indiedev #novahearts
positive · AI labelView post →I was worried this would be a visual novel - but that's not the vibe I get. It's more of a narrative RPG than anything else, with "texting" and interpersonal relationships at the heart of it all. The combat is great, the art is adorable, and while I feel a little OLD for the content (I'm 41), it's still such a great game with a lot of heart behind it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I HIGHLY suggest this game. I beat it in about a week on my steam deck (maybe 9-10hours total) and loved it. Yes, the combat is a bit to get used to and is slow at times. You're queuing actions rather than taking them immediately. It's definitely an acquired taste and I found myself starting to enjoy fights once I understood the combat. The absolute MINUTE I got a hang of delaying enemy actions, I was flying through encounters. The story and characters were my favorite part of the game. The…

neutral · AI labelView post →“What on earth is going on here?” Those were my exact—well, almost—thoughts thirty minutes into the game. It’s a beautifully chaotic mess, packed with superhero franchise references and logic buried under layers of nonsense and self-irony. What worked for me in the end was turning off my brain and just going with the flow. This isn’t a game to be understood—it’s meant to be felt. There’s barely any lore or explanation from the start, so you just have to watch events unfold and accept things as…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Mahou Shojou meets Saturday Cartoons Nova Hearts really captures the narrative flow present in the best of eastern and western animations while keeping dialogue feeling real, even in awkward moments. Its does a great job of having an inclusive cast that feels natural and lets the player appreciate them for who they are. The art really pulls you in and the character designs pop with great fashion. The music is catchy and very fitting of the familiar but fresh vibe of Vermillion. The combat uses…

neutral · AI labelView post →Great game with a beautiful story and many enjoyable moments! It was heartwarming to see so many queer characters surrounded by love and support from their friends/family. I really liked the combat mechanics and how deceptively simple they are; it was fun to experiment with skills and combos in each fight, trying to understand the best tactic for each. Still, I'd love to see some QOL improvements. Most of all, I miss the ability to load a save mid-combat. Also, I feel that some…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I loved the game, the art is fantastic and the story is engaging through the whole game. I enjoyed the unique fighting system and it was pretty easy to learn (after I actually started reading the instructions; not very intuitive but easy to understand with the tutorial). The romance options are very straightforward and most options are easy to tell if it is a friendly/romantic/adverse option. Everyone was a bit too into everyone for my taste, but I enjoyed that the game explored different…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I liked this! It's a pretty breezy experience that I got done in a couple sittings, and it's paced in such a way that I found myself quite easily engrossed in the experience. The combat is quite unique and satisfying to figure out over time. The final encounter was genuinely really tough and required me to properly lock in and pay attention to what I was doing, or risk fumbling the whole thing. It gave the climax a certain tension that I enjoyed. The writing is strong too. At its best, it…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Good quirky cast of characters, everyone is thirsty to a preposterous degree, the humour is snappy, the text interface is nice and speedy to click through making it feel a lot more fast-paced than a typical VN. Unfortunately combat slows things down to a crawl... the animations look nice but it would be better if they were a bit faster or if there was less delay between actions. I would also have liked a more satisfying conclusion to the story but that's a minor quibble.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I think with the new balance changes and being able to skip the combat if you want enhances the story experience but kind of undercuts the point of the game. The ending is also kind of abrupt and very bittersweet. Definitely could have used another chapter or a longer final chapter. The diversity in the game is top tier though and these characters are very fun to interact with (you can also be absolute bastard in this game if you want to be, which can be pretty funny). If you don't vibe…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game was incredibly fun and it shocked me with both how emotional and how horny it got. By the end of it I actually teared up, which is about the highest praise I can give it.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is honestly great. I'd definitely give it around 8.5/10. There are some small "issues" and "improvements" that I would like to see in the game, but it's honestly really, really good. (Or at least, I really really liked it.) Let's start with the beginning, basically the game is a dating-sim with different characters you can romance/befriend/antagonize (which might change the ending of the game depending on how relations go?), and also includes turn-based RPG fights against…

positive · AI labelView post →Really enjoyable game! The dating sim portion is entertaining and lighthearted, and there's an interesting story in the background. The battle portions took a second to get the hang of, but really fun once I got there. And, can't say it enough, the artwork in the transformation scenes is *gorgeous*!

I occasionally get confused by the dialogue and the pacing is kind of strange...but the characters are all interesting and I like the art a lot, especially the cgs. Starts pretty slow and uninteresting (relatively) but I promise it gets better (and then keeps and keeps getting better). I don't think you need to be polyamorous to enjoy this game, or even queer for that matter. But if you are you need to get this. It felt like heaven.
