What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 192 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Very Positive (421 of 503 positive).
Players widely praise the game's charming art style and cozy atmosphere. [1][2][3] Many reviewers note the combat is too easy and lacks depth for experienced players. [4][5][6] Some players find the story simple and the game overall a short, pleasant experience. [7][8][9]

Overall a nice little game but for my preference too shallow in many aspects. What interested me in Terra Memoria were the artstyle/graphics and the genre. In the end i didn't finish the game because the fights were too easy, the story too simplistic and none of the gameplay-elements had much depth too them. While the game didn't demand anything of me i can imagine that for others it's going to be a cozy experience. …

this is a recommend from me, but cautionary this game in my opinion only has one major issue, but it really is gonna be a major one for some people. it is far, far too easy (for an adult player anyway) - eventually you figure out one strategy that works for literally any general mob encounter with any array of spells, and you can also ignore the timeline strategy stuff entirely once you've spent a little bit of time …

Going forward, when discussing games that are “mid”, Terra Memoria will live at the front of my mind. This game is exceedingly average in every way. The narrative is acceptable, the characters are fine, and the combat is there. That doesn’t mean the game does nothing interesting. I like the overworld exploration and how new skills for characters are hidden behind interesting puzzles, though at the same time I do …

Summary Beautiful graphics Simple, but fun battles You can build your own town A lot of content Overall I liked Terra Memoria a lot more than I thought I would. While the story might not be epic or as deep as in some other games, I mainly enjoyed it for the exploration, quests and building. I read that the developers were inspired by Dark Cloud 2 (Dark Chronicles) and I really felt that, not just because of the …

A decent but short turn-based JRPG-style game with a comfy art style. Likes: + Nice vibrant visual style with diverse character designs. + Not much grinding required for story. + Cooking and crafting is important for progression. + Some variation in battles due to group compositions. Dislikes: - Combat is not challenging and lacks depth. - All battle skills do not differ much from each other. - Plot conclusion and …

Players who liked Terra Memoria talk about beautiful art style and visuals; those who didn't talk about combat is too easy and repetitive. Which matters more to you?
Critics, per Wikipedia
Terra Memoria received generally positive reviews. On review aggregator Metacritic, the Nintendo Switch version holds a score of 74/100 based on five critic reviews, indicating "mixed or average". On OpenCritic, the game has a score of 80/100 based on 20 critic reviews, with 79% recommending it. Sam-James Gordon of RPGFan scored the game 85/100, calling it "a taste of something great" that wrapped up before losing momentum. He praised the pixel art sprites and 3D environments as a convincing tribute to 1990s RPGs and singled out Yponeko's soundtrack of over 80 tracks for its range. Gordon found the randomised combat pairings kept battles from growing stale, though he felt the town-building…

60 of 241 · most liked firstThis game is a mix of Suikoden, Paper Mario and the Leveling System of Final Fantasy XV. It tries to use a lot of gimmicks other games have to seemingly make up for the content it doesn't contain. It has a lot of issues, bugs and balancing problems that allow the game to feel like a chore rather than an actual game. Most notably, the enemies in the game feel like glorified HP Sponges. They constantly get you to try and exploit their weaknesses, and then after you have disabled their resistances…

There's no challenge, the incredible amount of popups (every time a monster dies I need a popup I have to confirm, really?). Even at 50% off, i can't recommend this one to anyone over the age of 10.

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I like the art work in the game. I wished more games would do it. What I don't like is the introduction and the "useless" combat system. I have only played 30 minutes and the intro is pure liquid backside! Nothing grinds my gears more than a game treating me like I am a stupid child and demanding I run all over town looking for crap. I it is infuriating! Tell me a story, don't fetch quest me to death or road block my progress "just because". Sick of games not being games anymore.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A bit too easy for my liking. I went and challenged an optional boss while a bit underleveled, only to beat it without even taking damage just by spamming the same two attacks.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game is a bit too simplistic, too easy, and caters to a young audience. Art style is neat, I would have enjoyed this when I was much younger but isn't quite the RPG I am looking for now. There were some comparisons to the grandia series which piqued my interest since I love those games but that comparison is a bit too generous here.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'm surprised this game didn't take off more. It isn't quite a Chained Echoes, Rise of the Third Power, or Sea of Stars imo, but certainly has some character and charm to it and surprised it didn't do better. Support this Indy darling!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've 100%ted this game after ~14 hours. Here is my 2 cents: + Gorgeous artstyle and level design + Takes obvious inspirations from Pokémon and older JRPGS like Chrono Trigger in terms of Encounter design and Character writing + Overall cozy vibes and chill gameplay experience, without grinding + The combat system is simple to understand but has enough depth to keep it interesting. + Bossfights are designed like puzzles that you need to solve (similar to Persona series), which I…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is a good introduction/tutorial in learning turn-based games to children or people who wants to play turn based games for the first time. The game will teach you the fundamentals of turn-based games and is easy, although it can be too easy for experienced player as you can steamroll the game easily. Combat is straightforward. Stat-building is simple because the equipment system is simple, and enemies have no complex patterns that will force you to think hard during a fight. As long…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beautiful sprite work and fun combat that could have used a little more complexity. Once you figure out the jig it doesn’t really ever change and the only enemies that have gimmicks that matter are one character’s sidequest bosses. The story is pretty weak, but charming and cute enough until the end. The game ends fairly abruptly and, quite frankly, is one of the dumbest story resolutions I’ve ever seen in a game. There was so much fun lore building up throughout the game yet the final boss…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is okay. Beautiful art, especially the sprite designs. Was a little disappointed half the party turned out to be boring humans rather than cool animal people like most of the NPCs are. Animations are not on the same level. Running and talking could be better, considering how often you do both, but what I'm really missing is body language or at least facial expressions during dialogue. The text effects are nice, but not really comparable. Gameplay didn't really require engaging my…

neutral · AI labelView post →Would I recommend this game? Maybe - it's made with a lot of love but for me it's also lacking in everything. So before getting it look a bit into what it offers. The universal good part is the graphics and style. It's pretty but the >game< itself is sadly extremly basic and I feel like they could have needed someone with more insight in actual gameplay and narrative design. From a technical point it plays smoothly but it's also very repetitive and bland. So get it if you are interested in…

I played it after a mammoth RPG and it was a nice palate-cleanser. I did find the combat a bit repetitive near the end. The building element in this game was totally pointless and I would have liked to see this built upon. However, I enjoyed it overall. Played perfectly on Steam Deck too. I did so enjoy completing the side missions, and learning a bit more about each character. I think the game has a good sense of humour and the world feels alive, reacting to your story and quest progression. The base building and recruitment mechanics were my favourite parts of the game, kind of reminds me of Dark Cloud 2. I'm also not a huge fan of puzzles, but these…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A solid RPG with an interesting twist to combat and some incredibly cozy cooking and crafting elements. The story, characters and artstyle made it stand out immediately for me and it was one of the underappreciated highlights of 2024 in my humble opinion. It certainly put Dear Villagers on my radar and for the rest of 2024 they did not disappoint! If you like challenging turn-based combat that keeps you on your toes, story-driven RPGs with a memorable cast and an engaging plot line filled…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terra Memoria is a relatively short story (18 hours for me) where you handle a group of anthropomorphized animals in a world suffering from a crisis. The story is simple and, I believe, suitable for children. There aren't really bad guys in the traditional sense. You spend your time exploring various place in the world, helping people around and fighting creatures and robots on the way. I feel the game has a French flair. That's at least the way I remember French stories for a younger audience…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Outstanding! Powerful! One of the most creative battle system I did seem in a while. The story is great, the character are likable. Great visuals and audio! There is a lot to love! Definitely will be the first "JRPG" I will recommend to newcomers to the genre. Did cook every dish, actually invest some time on Caumanse/Beeghin/Initio, did every achievement, walkaround to look see the post game. I would totally put more hours if there was more to do. You can see the developers put a lot…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A simple and casual RPG with some extremely convenient quality of life features but also missing some smaller ones. Overall it is a net positive to me. The biggest thing that stands out to me is the art style, really gives me a dose of nostalgia. The fights are super simple with a battle turn bar where you and the enemy appears and you can use elemental attacks to postpone their turn and break their guard. They cannot do the same to your characters, just inflict some statuses. There are no…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Wish the game had more direction you often got missions like find these items or defeat these enemies with no direction or where to go. There is no mini map in the game only the overworld map so nothing really you can quickly glance at to figure out you are going the right way. About 10 hours into the game the screen went dark blue and wouldn't let me go back to the game i had to quit the game and go back into again.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is short, uncomplicated, and easy. It is a pretty good introduction to JRPG. The art looks nice. The music and sounds are fine. The style is incredibly nostalgic for those of us who used to play many games like this. I would love to see the difficulty tuned up though, the combat near the end was more of a chore, and not something that required thinking. Overall, it was a pleasant experience that demanded very little of you. The game world is not big, and while I'm sure I missed…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terra Memoria is an excellent 50% of a video game. Things I liked: the artwork, the soundtrack, the found-family queer themes. None of that was worth it. This video game ultimately is extremely shallow. The characters are shallow, the gameplay is shallow, the plot is shallow...it honestly feels more like a prototype of a thing more than a thing in itself. I know this sounds harsh but it is my earnest and thoughtful belief, and I speak as someone who played this game to the credits. The most…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I bought this game after seeing a video in my Youtube feed declaring it one of the best RPGs the video creator had ever played. The game was cheap enough and on sale, so I bought a copy knowing there was a near-100% chance that person on Youtube was paid for that review, and sure enough they were. Terra Memoria has one of the absolutely dullest combat systems I have ever seen in a game, and I've done a Let's Play of Shadow Hearts 3. There is virtually no customization: each character can…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish I can recommend this. I grew up on the PS1 and get huge breath of fire vibes from this. But while the art direction is great the rest of the game fails to live up to the potential. A very weak story with ok world building. A forgettable cast. And dull combat system that moves far too slowly. Just overall a speed up button is very much needed. But even then it wouldn't save it from just being....boring. I don't like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on developers. Especially on indie ones. I wish them all the…

Pros: - Engaging Storyline: The narrative follows Syl and five other characters as they uncover the mystery of Syl’s lost parents and confront invading enemies, providing a compelling and heartfelt journey. - Dynamic Combat System: The game features a turn-based combat system with unique duo mechanics, allowing for strategic depth and variety in…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Art style and aesthetics are very nice. Combat has some neat ideas but after about 5 hours it's still really easy and simplistic. Story and characters are weak.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terra Memoria is a pixelated turn-based RPG developed by French developers La Moutard and obviously inspired by classic Japanese role-playing games (Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger). Set in a magical world where humans and anthropomorphic animals co-exist, you play as six different characters who embark on a journey to investigate a shortage of magic crystals that is destabilizing the planet and waking up some ancient robots; this journey will also be the occasion for your party to dive through…

Bear in mind, combat complexity, build variety or any sort of combat diversification you might be used to in JRPG games are no the focus here. Combat is very simple and repetitive throughout the whole game. The key aspects on this game the incredible visual and captivating and cozy story. Character development and depth are amazing and the game is very confortable to play in a casual and relaxed way. Puzzles and missions are sometimes hard to figure out at first, so if…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →After 15 hours in and playing throught the storyline I found this game to creative, but not enough to be fun. The game plays well without having the best instructions, the parties makeup is very dynamic, but overall the fighting moves I found to be too repetitve and could of used more variety. Throughout the game I used the same moves I essentially started with, made it stagnant, but also with the enemy variety was very repetitive. I love party based jrpg, rpg, 2D pixellated whatnot, but…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terra Memoria is overall a short and cozy JRPG that is a good amount of charm and looks great. It isn't incredibly challenging nor is it very long, so pass if those are deal breakers for you. There is a decent amount of Octopath styled ideas incorporated, but with their own spin. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, which is okay. Visually the game is great with very well drawn art and well crafted areas. The game generally respects your time and isn't very grindy. The plot itself…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is turn-based comfort food with some unique and fun features that stand it apart, but it also has some major balance issues that detract from my enjoyment and lower my confidence in my recommendation: Pros: 1. I like the way the dialogue boxes animate to infer character mood and tone. 2. I really like how dialogue text is paced as if it is being spoken. You can easily read dialogue in its spoken tempo; this also helps infer tone. 3. The funny menu sound effects add some fun to an…

neutral · AI labelView post →This is a thumbs-up review, so using the range of meh. to Awesome!, this game is on the upper end of Good, and lower end of Great. The devs guesstimate 20hrs to complete the game proper, plus a little more to do all the side quests, but the time you see above is all I needed to 100% the achieves, and all quests. For the RPGs I prefer playing, that's on the short side, but the length felt natural, not like it ended abruptly or something. The game shakes up a few of the time-tested and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terra Memoria is a game that puts fun and accessibility over challenge which is a rarity these days in the gaming market. With engaging characters, gameplay mechanics, and lack of typical RPG BS, this is one of the most fun games I've played in a while. While not perfect the charm and ease of gameplay made this game a huge standout even among indie RPGs. The lack of MP and instead using a system where the characters and enemies move down the line of attack order is not only a unique and fun…

positive · AI labelView post →I *mostly* liked what I played in the first hour, but its clear the game could have used a different director from the beginning. 1. Pokemon combat is bad. Emulating it in a party-based RPG environment just seems like a bad idea - and it proves to be here. Attacks that don't hit all enemies are considerably less useful unless they are VERY powerful, obviously (this is how math works), and enemies have a certain number of attacks they can take from any source before they are "shattered" and…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall, a solid indie JRPG experience. The obvious out of the way, the game has absolutely gorgeous pixel art with some fantastic character models and motion. Additionally, the environments and towns are all fairly varied and well designed. The combat, though seemingly run of the mill turn-based combat, has some fairly unique twists up its sleeve. The story was pretty decent overall; not earthshattering but also not overly nuanced and complex which makes this a nice, cozy, bite-sized…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall, pretty solid game. It delivered exactly what I was looking for: a casual, RPG experience with turn based combat and a simple story. Nothing was overly complex, the puzzles were fairly easy, but clever, combat had fun elements and the character designs were unique. There is also a city you can build up yourself with your own themes and custom placements. If you're looking for a AAA experience or a super deep story, this may not be for you. If you just want a nice casual game to 100% in…

neutral · AI labelView post →This is a standard turn-base JRPG, with beautiful art style and a cozy, relaxing atmosphere. To help the relaxing/cozy factor, the game is also quite easy and simplistic. But this is also a double edge sword. While the gameplay is easy to understand and master, the fact that is so simple it also leads into too much repetitiveness and eventually gets stale. So, how the combat works. It is the standard turn-base style, with up to 3vs3 fights. It has an effective system to the it but instead of…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game has charming artwork, characters, and overall it was a fun time! The story and the combat weren't anything too special, but for someone who's just looking to have a fun time I would say this game delivers. Very cozy and I think this game would be a good introduction to the genre for casual or young players. Overall I'd give it a 7/10, I don't think I'll replay the whole game again but I'm glad I got to experience it!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →When I saw who the developers were, I really didn't hesitate for a second to buy the game! As a big JRPG fan, I truly felt the love the devs have for the genre. The game isn't really complicated, but the mechanics are interesting, the story is nice, the music is great, and you'll find a ton of easter eggs! I didn't experience a single bug throughout my entire playthrough, which really needs to be highlighted when talking about an indie studio :) I sincerely recommend this little indie…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Strongly recommend this hidden gem. Terra Memoria has the party dynamics and comfortable charm Octopath Traveler was aiming for but didn't quite reach. This game doesn't overstay its welcome, or put you through grind, it keeps up a good paced adventure with depth to its world and reasons behind the conflicts, right up until the end. (Game finished on Switch previously to explain the short gametime attached, realistically I took 10 or so hours all up)
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I enjoyed Terra Memoria. The story isn't too long and overall the game is pretty cute and cozy. Nothing too difficult. I guessed the ending correctly, but still enjoyed that end fight. I did feel like it can get pretty tedious at times. I tried to run away from enemy fights when it got too easy because of my level. It would be nice to have an auto battle button when you out level the enemies or something to make the fights a little less redundant because oh boy it got kind of boring at some…

It's not very challenging but it was chill and enjoyable and a solid game from a small French indie studio.
positive · AI labelView post →Terra Memoria is a truly exceptional JRPG that left me with absolutely no complaints. I loved the beautiful art style, the combat, and the exploration. You can really tell how much love the developers put into this one.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a turn-based RPG with engaging characters, a cool story with many tendrils and branches, and interesting synergy based on how you organize party! I guess there are many games that match that description, but this one in particular is a true standout. Also, I need to draw attention to the absolute banger of a soundtrack. The battle music is GREAT, and it gets reorchestrated for different characters, which is so cool! It's about 15 hours for a main story playthrough, and quite a bit more to…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Terra Memoria has very solid graphics, reasonable world building, and a fun elemental break system similar to Octopath Traveler or Bravely Default. Most notably, it has a unique party structure wherein your three active party members are randomly paired with a support character who gives them the option to modify their abilities in different ways. There's too much walking around, combat gets grindy (though there is a fast forward button), and there isn't much else that stands out, but I'm glad…
