The game has a lot of qualities and many people will find enjoyment playing it, but I cannot recommend it due to a huge (at least for me) con: Its horrible controls. Odallus has very good level design, bosses, cutscenes, atmosphere and music. But everything would be much more enjoyable if the controls were more responsive. I played it with a controller and had a very miserable time when I had to perform platforming. …

A really fun throwback type game that merges elements of Classicvania and Metroidvania; levels are largely linear, but all have hidden secrets off the beaten path, many of which are crucial upgrades that fundamentally change how your character plays. You wind up revisiting levels later on after you get some movement options, and the power curve was pretty much perfect; my character was noticeably more resilient by …

Odallus: The Dark Call is a pretty great dark fantasy 2D action platforming Metroidvania. The graphics, controls, music, sound effects and cutscenes are exactly like what you'd see in an NES game from the early 90's, JoyMasher have nailed the execution perfectly. It's Ghouls 'n' Ghosts crossed with Castlevania and the art design and monsters are clearly inspired by Berserk. The gameplay is fun, addictive and …

A very Fun well done Old School Castlevania style game that is reminiscent of the NES era. With 8 areas to explore, tons of bosses to fight and a good story to wrap everything up. The pixel art was very nice and the enemy designs were pretty good too. You start off super weak, having to pay attention to enemies and your health but the more you play and explore the more of a power house you become to the point where …

60 of 196 · most liked firstStill checking this one... For a retro game seems ok. Gameplay is like Castlevania. There's some variety going on which is good. Music and sounds are well made. Progress throughout the stage is partially saved so you don't have to collect same keys all the time. Level design is soild but some enemies might feel a bit annoying... Game have issues with some controllers not working at all. I think this one might be interesting for retro gamers.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Another great gem from my favorite Brazilian developers. If you like Berserker, you will enjoy this one even more! Give it a chance now!!!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Thinking about aspect ratios and faux-retro games I appreciate the compromise they made in Odallus but I don't think I could do that. Like surely someone has to have done like... Fake Retro Re-Release of Fake Retro Game or something?
neutral · AI labelView post →Much more clunky and aggravating to play than actually hard. Yes, you can learn to use the less than stellar controls and come to terms with your character's huge hitbox. But I can't see any reason why you shouldn't play some better game instead.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Finished Odallus: the Dark Call, the last game I'll beat this year. Pretty cool metroidvania-ish action platformer! It has some retro sensibilities (it starts not that hard but the end bits kept kicking my butt), and it nails REALLY well that 90's gameplay vibe #blutoid

neutral · AI labelView post →I wouldn't completely advise against it, it is an interesting game despite its problems it's not one of the worst games, but I'd only recommend it if it's something that you're really curious about. My overall impression of the game is more mixed and tinging towards negative and in short, this game wants to bring back much of the bad sides of old games. This ould've been a fun little game but instead of doing something fun, it opted to be frustrating by implementing most of the worst aspects…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Odallus: The Dark Call I am a bit ambiguous here. They achieved what they wanted i guess and that's a nostalgic experience from the good old Metroidvania days. With all the good, but also with all the flaws. I really can't understand all the praise here. It's okey, but not fantastic, and I only recommend it for nostalgic reasons. Because today there are so many great games in this genre that you really don't have to go back. Like Salt and Sanctuary, Vigil, Bloodstained, Blasphemous and many…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Odallus: The Dark Call is a perfect game that pays homage to the NES games in the right way: by discarding what made them tedious and tiresome, and embracing what made them memorable and unique. It’s not often that I see a flawless execution of an attempt to recreate the NES formula; thus, I can wholeheartedly say that JoyMasher is a master of their craft. The game is not simple enough to breeze through, but it’s not complicated or difficult enough to bore you, either. At first glance, the…

It brings elements of classics such as Ghosts’n Goblins, Demon’s Crest and Castlevania while subverting some modern twists. Game Preview. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADLD4QwdPEE
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Maybe it's my download of the game, but I'd say it's heavily glitched. It's an old school type game. I loved the Castlevania-esque world. I expected the controls to be a bit stiff. However, I often can't get the game to do what I need. Even so, I was still giving it the time it deserved. It was when it sent my character into some sort of slow motion on land that I had to hang up the towel. My playtime is more than it shows. In my achievements, I see zero orbs, zero heart pieces and some other…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →🧿 A solid retro-like platformer in a dark fantasy setting, inspired by 8-bit titles. Explore maze locations, farm currency, and discover secrets. It looks great, sounds nice, and controls surprisingly well (though for some reason, people say otherwise). There are small upgrades, useful secondary weapons, and interesting bosses. Indie games in this genre are often unbalanced and lackluster (just look at the gameplay-awful «Oniken» from the same dev), but this one isn't all that bad and is a…

neutral · AI labelView post →Odallus is a half decent game, and I wanted to give it a thumbs up, but at the end of the day (and once I fought the last boss) I realised that this game is basically a copy paste of older games, without really thinking what make these games good, and what made them bad. There was never a time in this game where i felt things were spot on. Nothing was really all that much fun, because there was always some mechanic, design, gameplay element or just general feeling that ruined the mood.…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →What a fantastic game. Controls immediately make sense, secrets, the game's biggest highlight, can slip by you a few times unless you're being extremely careful. Bosses have patterns and there's consistent strategies for taking out enemies at tough points so it's not ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. The game's hard mode even moves all the major upgrades around and includes new enemies exclusive to that mode. The only downside of that is enemy spam during boss battles, that's like the game's only con, in my opinion.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's better than their previous game, Oniken, the levels are better thought out, but the boss of the first level was just such a blatant bad game design... One of the worst bosses you'll ever have displeasure to fight against in a platform game. The mobs are honestly crap. Like, below the average for a NES era platformer crap. I like some of the ideas (it's not that any of them are original, you've seen it all done ages ago, and better...), but too often they are cancelled by stupid design…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Whuff. Well, I made it. Just about. Barely. I'm no hardcore gamer, but I definitely enjoy dabbling in well-made spectacle brawlers (eg. all the DMCs, bar the second), and that interest has begun to slowly draw me into the grittier 2D hack-and-slashers and their Metroidvanian cousins. I haven't really got into Hollow Knight or Ori or the other modern classics, but it can only be a matter of time. I have a vague idea for a 2D sword-and-sandals Metroidvania, and so with the hype surrounding…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall just kind of dull. Movement and combat is extremely simplistic and stiff. Level design and exploration is very bland, and without any kind of in-game map, very tedious to explore. If you just love "retro" games, then go for it. But if you want to play a great 2d platformer/metroidvania type game, there are numerous and significantly better choices. Here is a quick list of games In a similiar style I would recommend instead "Metroidvanias" Blasphemous Dad Quest Dandara Enviromental…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →An action platformer that sits neatly between the arcade action of old-school Castlevania and the Metroidvanias that came later. The visuals and music are excellently crafted, but the world-building is hampered by an incredibly obtuse plot and terrible dialogue. The level design is also solid, with a good variety of environments to explore and enemies to fight, with a store of consumable weapons adding enough flexibility to keep the otherwise simple combat from becoming too dull. On the…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Excellent example of a good Metroidvania game. First level doesn't promise much but as soon as you start unlocking at least some paths and items the game starts to shine. Difficulty is hard and in the spirit of La-Mulana i really doubt i will ever be able to complete the game but i sure will try my best. Graphics is retro without any of the retro bs so often is associated with games like this. Worth even full price.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Odallus is a side-scroller with RPG elements created by JoyMasher in a retro style. The protagonist goes through many stages inspired by old Castlevania games, collecting resources and a few upgrades while searching for secrets and fighting some difficult and unfair bosses. The simple and smooth gameplay is undoubtedly fun, but one can notice that the software engine is very, very crude. The result is a game with unnecessary limitations and several technical problems that will follow your tough…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is the kind of retro action game your dad swears games used to be like, except this one actually is good. Great level variety, crunchy combat and a soundtrack that sounds like a haunted Famicom trying its best. Some backtracking feels a bit “mandatory cardio” and the hitboxes occasionally cosplay as suggestions, but the vibe carries it. [8/10]
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game brought about so many Nes era memories. Where back in the 90s you'd go to Toys R Us and pick out the game with the coolest box art, not knowing if it was going to be absolutely terrible or amazing. This ended up being one of the amazing ones.

In some ways this is good. - The gfx are large and have a lot of colour and personality. - It's obvious what things…

Game is a buggy half assed mess Half the time i walk into a level i need to "reset" the game because my Life bar doesn't load right, 4 empty hearts instead of my actual hearts and even healing doesn't fix it. Try to buy something in a store ? Sometimes it goes well , sometimes it just "freezes" overlapping the game and the only way out is pausing and back to the map with you ! Controls aren't Sharp either, The Dash-Jumps / Double Jumps / Floating end up being a mess to pull off…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Yeah no, nice concept but the snow level is straight up made to make u lose ur mind. There's a point when there's no balance between "difficulty" and straight up annoyance (the wind/platforming at the end of the snow level was pure suffering for no reason) Also if there's something I really truly hate with this "retro/modern" game is the intentional invisible/extended hitboxes of enemies that hit u even further then the actual sprite of the enemy even tho u suppose to be at safe distance. The exploration is sometimes tricky but very rewarding, and the last boss is one of my favorite last bosses in video games. positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Fun little platformer/metroidvania. I liked the graphics and especially the sounds. gave me Mega Drive/Genesis vibes quite a bit. The exploration was fun and getting upgrades challenging enough. One of the hidden gems among the other metroidvanias. Highly Recommended!
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A retro game that genuinely looks, sounds and plays like a game from the era it's emulating. Only in the best possible way, like one of the few gems that never feel truly dated.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A great retro platformer. Well designed levels that are fun to explore and lots of secrets to find. The artwork is a wonderful dark fantasy style and the music is also very solid. A challenging game, with some tough achievements for those who are interested. Overall, a very positive recommend.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It was alright, but the difficulty spike at the tail end was pretty ridiculous. Probably why only 8% of players have the "beat the game" achievement. Also, this isn't really metroidvania. Like, it has some elements of backtracking, but that's about it. It's far more 'vania' than 'metroid'.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Classic-vania and metroidvania elements. Nice average difficulty. Movem4ent progression is really really fun and end game the movement tech is really thrilling! Underrated gem for sure! Atmosphere and storytelling with a nice dark theme also deserve mention.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's a great game if you like/stand the super retro graphics. The gameplay is fun and the boss fights are amazing. There are also plenty of secrets to find. CONS There's a bit too much backtracking.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Basically makes me think of Castlevania III but as a metroidvania. It's not a perfect description, but it gets you pretty close. The difficulty curve is a bit odd, starting off damned hard, getting better as you collect power ups, getting really hard again at various points, before evening out towards the end again. There are some other things I could probably nitpick, but overall it's a solid game.
