What players are saying
Counted from the reviewers’ own thumbs up/down on the 189 English Steam reviews we collected, not by the AI. Valve’s all-language rating: Mostly Positive (547 of 708 positive).
Players praise Aggelos for its nostalgic Wonder Boy-inspired gameplay and challenging but rewarding combat. [1][2][3] Many reviewers criticize the game for poor controller support, especially the lack of D-pad functionality. [4][5][6] Some players find the difficulty spikes and grinding frustrating, despite enjoying the overall experience. [7][8][9]

Two words: TRASH CONTROLS. Trash controller support. D-PAD DOES NOT WORK, on a 2D platforming game!?!? Trash keyboard customization (or lack thereof). This is the by the book way to ruin an otherwise decent game. Sure it starts playable enough even though I'm forced to use analog stick. Then eventually you will reach frustrating rooms designed to make you waste time with floaty controls on tight platforming …

Aggelos is such a great Wonder Boy and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link clone that I have no idea how it flew under my radar for so long. It is such a simple and beautiful game that does what it’s supposed to do almost perfectly. You fight monsters and bosses, find secrets, and gradually obtain new equipment on your journey along with combat scrolls and elemental magic rings that give you new abilities. Your armor …

Aggelos is a 16-bit metroidvania powerhouse of game that is heavily inspired by the oldest entries in its genre. It's unique design mixes nostalgic level design and gameplay with legitimately complex and unique combat. The game, while very flawed, is an easy recommend for people who want to be challenged. Overall Rating: 7.6/10 Pros: - Top tier, nostalgic audio and visual design - Very unique combat flow that allows …

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The dev team said they were working on D-pad support 4 years ago. Still, there is none. It doesn't matter at all if the content of the game is good, and I couldn't tell you if it is. Playing retro run and jump platformers without D-pad support is a garbage experience. There are too many incredibly good games in the genre you could play instead.

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The game has zero respect for your time. Long walks between save points and boss fights, losing experience on death, and a complete lack of any sort of useful map completely ruin the game. Some hitboxes feel really off. The down stab attack only chooses to work around half the time, causing tons of unfair damage. If you are looking for a retro style metroidvania, consider Alwa's Awakening or Cathedral instead.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This game is actually good, sort of, but it has some massive issues that just make you hate it by the end. First off, controllers didn't work for me. The only thing I could do was use a community layout to remap my controller to kb/mouse, and that worked. However, once I got the element ability that stopped working and I had to swap layouts AGAIN to keep going. Basically, if you aren't willing to remap the controller you probably won't be getting a controller to actually work. Second…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Beat Aggelos 100% I really liked it even with its bullshit difficulty on its back half of bosses and that one challenge. Perfect length as well It’s a cute Wonder Boy kinda game and a few catchy tunes
positive · AI labelView post →I made it to the air temple, and after a few tries, I uninstalled it. I hate not finishing a game, but I wasn't having fun anymore. I love retro platformers, I don't shy away from difficult games, but this is a weird one. It has some crazy difficulty spikes, annoying platforming sections that demand precision the controls don't provide. I liked the first 5 hours of the game, the other 6 hours just felt like a chore. If you really really like retro platformers, and find this one on a deep sale,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Aggelos 2 must be held together by hopes and dreams The boss death noise never finished 😭 Had to go save and exit the game ASAP to make it stop
negative · AI labelView post →The game looks cool and I’ve been wanting to play it for a long time, but after opening the input settings menu, I felt like giving up just four minutes in; I refuse to play with any of those input presets—they are bizarre and intimidating, truly one of the worst atrocities I’ve ever seen in an input settings menu. There is absolutely no regard for ergonomics. Just look at the available presets and imagine how you’d position your fingers for them: PRESET 1 ↑ — W ↓ — S ← — A → — D ATTACK — J…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →For those who love Retro Games, especially if they are a fan of Wonder Boy. Simple game that keeps the player engaged every minute, with a good soundtrack, simple, direct text and many worlds to travel in 8Bits. The game is a platformer with metroidvania elements, but not traditional metroidvanias, Aggelos is more restrained in this aspect and with less backtracking. Exploration is enjoyable, and naturally acquired skills help you explore new areas. An interesting thing is that some paths can…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I really wanted to like this game but unfortunately there are just so many other games in this genre that are better and more worth your money. The graphics are cute and it has most of the standard metroidvania bells and whistles. I like the design of the world and the enemies and the bosses are good. They have patterns but they dont repeat exactly and that makes for more challenging boss fights than in some other new metroidvanias. The game is rather short for a modern metroidvania but i…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I wish I could play it but without controller support I can't. I agree with other reviews, don't say it has controller support if it needs another software to make it work.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Although I like the style of game I cannot give it a good review since the style of game is an action platformer with horrible controls due to keyboard controls not being configuable and controller controls being absolute ass when it comes to the movement due to the fact it is bound to a analog stick rather then a D-Pad which this game should be default to. If it weren't for those facts I could have fully recommended this game because the game has a decent story and good music, yet controls…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Store page lists "partial controller support" but even the developer admits you need a 3rd party program to make a controller work. This game is keyboard and mouse only. Do not be tricked like I was.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun throwback Zelda-like/Metroidvania, with a lot of heart, that unfortunately gets held back by some agonizing difficulty spikes and gamepad woes. The bosses and temples towards the end, call on you to either grind to build experience, or figure out some way to survive without tearing your hair out. Basically the balance feels off in this game. I'm at the last boss with the best armor and most of the heart containers and fighting him feels like a chore. That, in and of itself, isn't SO…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Controller support is pathetically garbage. It doesn't matter if the presentation and gameplay are good. When you aren't allowed to play the game comfortably then there's no reason to spend money on it. Neither my dpad or analog sticks work for inputs, and the keyboard controls don't even work somehow. Plus when i go to screen options it doesn't let me exit while keeping the desired screen size- I'm forced to close the game and play at the default size. I'm not saying the game didn't have…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →No cloud save. Goodbye, 11 hours of play, I guess.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Aggelos was fun. But man, I wasn't expecting this game to be this hard! Maybe because I haven't played any of the Wonderboy games (except Adventure Island for NES, a game I never completed as a child) which is what this game is inspired by. When I saw it's gameplay on YouTube, I expected a short, breezy Metroidvania. Boy, was I wrong. The game starts pretty simple, but gets much harder after each boss. After the third boss, even regular enemies became difficult to handle. The final boss is…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This is a game I will come back to every 5-10 years to satisfy that nostalgic itch of retro gaming of the days long past, where I was a young kid playing playing video games for the first time. That's a special feeling for me now as an grown up, and this game reproduces that sensation exceptionally well! This game is a time capsule that embodies the essence of 2D action platforming of those days but without the frustrations of hardcore difficulty, lack of save, and poor quality of life. The…

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Got to the air temple and got drained of wanting to finish the game. I really don't know how to explain the fall off this game puts you through but it just slams you into the dirt at somepoint and you don't want to try and get back up.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Retro game with no real map and garbage combat. Was working on the final boss before a save issue caused me to lose several hours of time. Wasn't fun enough to redo all that so I dropped it. Play Astalon instead lol.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Horrible controls and no way to change them. Anything that uses JILK is sh¡t, it's not that hard to go arrow keys + z x c.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →This took so much longer than it should have 😭 Sometimes the downwards attack just wouldn’t register (which you can see towards the end) Besides this shitty little trial, Aggelos has been a fun little Wonder Boy kinda game so far. Even if each boss is a big jump in difficulty

positive · AI labelView post →Controls are bonkers. That one woodpecker challenge area, I can get past all of the prior ones with ease but the physics and QOL is ♥♥♥♥ for this one room. You'll know which room. If only there was no damage so I can keep trying endlessly, and a way to reset the room without that tedious walk back to the previous room. I like the game overall, except that one room. Dealbreaker. Edit: I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate the difficulty spikes. You'd think you'd be comfortable with your current strength after a boss,…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I just finished the game, and I love it. Reminiscent of games like Zelda 2 and Wonder Boy, it's very fun. I understand why it's not rated higher. It tries to deliver so many styles of play that you'll find something to hate, and it won't be optional. Pros: Doesn't overstay its welcome, pretty short to finish. Challenging boss mechanics and platforming, every choice in how you play the game matters. Overall, 8/10 overall fun. Cons: Grinding is a bit of a slog, either for money or exp.…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →The Air Temple is the most poorly designed area in the game. Even with the best armor and weapons, you are asking too much from me for that boss fight. Can't see the rest of the game because of it. The first 3 hours were fun, but beyond that, it turned into a chore, and I felt miserable continuing.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A fun enough Metroidvania that's on the smaller side. The maps are, for the most part, harder than the actual bosses. Except a certain secret boss, at least. The Woodpecker Trial can bite my pimply, fleshy ass though.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I'll be grabbing some of these games because: 🕹 Vambrace: Cold Soul is a simpler version of Darkest Dungeon. 🕹 Gordian Quest is a simpler version of a D&D game. 🕹 Aggelos is like combining Monster Boy and Zelda II, but a much shorter version. 🕹 Book of Demons is like a simpler Diablo game.
neutral · AI labelView post →Thoroughly enjoying Aggelos 2 quite a lot! Cool game, well-thought-out.

neutral · AI labelView post →Great game. Horrific gamepad implementation. Would've rated it a negative if it wasn't for the fun gameplay.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Bugged out and locked me out of a vital quest item. Overall, not a great PC port.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It's not bad, it's just very mediocre and doesn't have basic qol like rebinding keys, window size multiplication or decent frame pacing. No matter what you do, the framerate jumps around a lot, even entirely skipping frames. Not just "oh it was only there for a moment", but outright "that frame just didn't appear at any time". the enemy patterns are all very rough and break game design fundamentals, like random movements that exceed your attack radius/safe distance control, and you aren't…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →One of the best Metroidvania games i ever play! i love it! Sadly, the steam version does sucks. it have long loading times between levels. It's not a high demand game by any sense but it buggy and not well implement for PC. Get the switch version if you have the chance. i do recommend this game a lot but not for PC.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Great game right up until the end boss, which smote me senseless. Can't complain about anything else though. Solid experience, but if you get to the end and can't take it, just pop out, Youtube the ending and call it a night.
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I am more hyped for this than I am for any upcoming AAA game. I freaking LOVE Aggelos and the announcement of a sequel - with Gargoyles Quest style mechanics! - caught me by complete surprise.
positive · AI labelView post →My controller did not work by default and if you don't like any of the three keyboard layouts, you are out of luck because you can't change keybinds. Fun game otherwise but not being able to change my buttons is really frustrating.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A while ago I asked my game friends what are the best gated exploration games and this list was the result: - Ori series - Ufouria - Blasphemous - Aggelos - Axiom Verge - Strider 2014 - Bloodstained - Ender lilies - Bunny must die! - Demons Crest - Blaster Master Zero - Carrion #metroidvania

positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Audio did not work whatsoever. Didn't even show up on my pc's volume mixer. negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Overall: 31 / 60 While the sound and visuals are a masterful recreation of a bygone era in gaming, the entire experience is undermined by some less-than-generous placements of critical structures and brutally difficult boss fights. Perhaps the intent was to qualify as "Nintendo hard" but the effect was, largely, to undo most of the goodwill that the familiar environs and early gameplay engendered. At a significant discount and with expectations in check, it can be a brief retro romp. Sound…
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →Enjoyed the first half or so of the game. Then got to where you have to do a ridiculously overcomplicated jumping puzzle, smashed my head against it for a bit, then uninstalled the game.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →It is not bad to play but it really would be better with a metroidvania style ingame map.
negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →A tribute or copy, whatever you think fits better, to wonder boy in monster world. It's a much harder game since there's no logic in the save points and you always need to backtrack to use these. Hearts are rare drops unlike in monster world, and are bugged in most cases going through the floor instead of standing there. Another horrible design idea was coins and other items disappearing 3 seconds after dropping. The controls cannot be changed, so either use a controller, or you're stuck…

neutral · AI labelView post →It's been years since I played this, but I hold a good memory of it - and I just found out a sequel was announced in August 2025! Right from the name of the developer, you can see this game was made with clear love for the action-adventure episodes of the Wonderboy franchise, especially Dragon's Trap. It gives an overall distinct feeling of a game from a powered-up SEGA Master System, with pleasant music and very clean, very colorful graphics with some beautiful sprites, as can clearly be seen…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I've had fun with it so far. What sparked my interest in the first place was how it reminded me of one of my favourite SNES games of all time; Super Adventure Island II. It looks and play similarly, only Aggelos being much larger and tougher overall, but I feel like there's some similarities in there. The character controls pretty well, maybe a tad tighter would've been nice but it doesn't make the platforming or combat frustrating. It's challenging, there's a bit of backtracking for special…

negative · reviewer's own thumbsView post →We're playing more Aggelos 1! Come have a look it's a pretty cool game!
positive · AI labelView post →I loved the second game, but this one is completely broken for me. It won't even launch properly on steamdeck, and on PC, when I use my gamepad, the d-pad won't work. I tried using a community layout, but that didn't work either. Maybe there is a workaround, but this is unacceptable for a game this old, espeically since the dev has been aware of the d-pad issue since release.

neutral · AI labelView post →Aggelos is an absolutely excellent evolution of the Wonder Boy formula. For some reason, modern gamers seem to ignore the Wonder Boy games, in particular, Wonder Boy 3 The Dragon's Trap, which is so much more fluid and interesting than Super Metroid to me. But anyway, Aggelos takes that excellent formula and ramps it all up to another level. It is really a fantastic Metroidvania in its own right with a superb blend of action and puzzles, great enemy patterns, including the bosses, great…
positive · reviewer's own thumbsView post →I didn't really like this game much, but I'm giving it a recommendation to retro metroidvania fans as the game is competently made and has a decent amount of content. The music is mostly sub-par, with a few decent sounding tracks in there. The visuals are crisp and clean, very reminiscent of the Master System. The progression is linear as is the case with most action-adventure games, you mostly won't be getting lost as there is a fortune teller that will give you hints on what to do next.…
